This paper summarises the results of the author's study of malt kilns in England from the 18th century to the second half of the 19th century. The paper will look at twenty-three examples across fourteen counties, from Yorkshire in the north to Devon in the south, andfrom Shropshire in the west to Norfolk in the east. The findings will then be used to assess whether there are any similarities in design, and if so, whether they are specific to a geographical area. The reasons for the better survival of early kilns in some areas than others will be considered. Finally the issue of whether there is any chronological development of these early malt kilns will be discussed. A catalogue of all the sites recorded follows at the end of the paper.
