1. Early Malt Kilns in England.

Abstract

This paper summarises the results of the author's study of malt kilns in England from the 18th century to the second half of the 19th century. The paper will look at twenty-three examples across fourteen counties, from Yorkshire in the north to Devon in the south, andfrom Shropshire in the west to Norfolk in the east. The findings will then be used to assess whether there are any similarities in design, and if so, whether they are specific to a geographical area. The reasons for the better survival of early kilns in some areas than others will be considered. Finally the issue of whether there is any chronological development of these early malt kilns will be discussed. A catalogue of all the sites recorded follows at the end of the paper. Abstract

The drift of much post-war scholarship has been away from the Romantic belief that the medieval faithful, whether laity, monks, or clergy, spurred on by the example of the early Christians of Rome in their hewn out caves, built churches and monasteries with their own devoted labour. Long-standing AMS trustee John H. Harvey spent much of his professional life establishing the concept of the medieval architect, demonstrating that the greatest churches and cathedrals were as much the result of individual human genius as the coming together in the corporate, even divine, inspiration of God's People and Clergy. And yet, as James Bettley shows in this seminal paper, the concept of the Anglican priest-architect in the heyday of the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival has, if anything, been underplayed. Ernest Geldart was just one among many clergymen who not only built or embellished their own churches but on occasion offered their services to other congregations. Although this paper is confined to the work of Anglican clergy, the story is just as convincing beyond the Established Church. Men like Father Benedict Williamson were the Roman Catholic equivalent of Geldart, and what at face value seems like a Puginian myth, that the Franciscan Brothers shared the scaffolding with professional builders to construct the magnificent monastery at Gorton in Manchester, designed by E. W. Pugin in 1866-72, turns out to have been true. And in Wales few have hitherto taken seriously the Revd William Jones, who designed over 200 chapels, and the Revd Thomas Thomas, responsible for scores more. The Revd Thomas Morris seems by comparison to have been positively meagre in his output, given his friendly nickname of 'Ten Chapel Tom'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3. The Anatomy and Demise of Decorative Brickwork on Artisans' Housing in Birmingham.

Abstract

Birmingham has possibly the best examples in the UK of decorative artisans' terraced housing, in particular the variety and detail of brickwork. The latter part of the nineteenth century and first decade of the twentieth century saw a rapid expansion of artisans' housing in the suburbs as the city grew in prosperity. Within this era, artisans' housing was transformed from insanitary squalor within the city to buildings of beauty in the suburbs. This paper focuses on Handsworth where there is a rich variety of ornamentation. The story starts during the early stages of the industrial revolution and develops during the 1870s as social awareness grew and became reflected in both public architecture and the common artisan's house. The streets became an exhibition of flamboyant ornamentation with an unprecedented variety of decorative elements in their façades, in particular brick patterns and motifs. Having survived the bombs of the 1940s and the bulldozers of the 1960s, the decorative brickwork now faces a major threat from paint and render. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper examines the image of London as recorded by tourists from continental Europe in the latter half of the nineteenth century. London is represented as a synecdoche for British industrial modernity, which is intimately connected with the haphazard nature of the metropolis. British modernism is thus presented as inherently unstable and individualistic, lacking many of the familiar markers common to cities on the Continent. The judgement of these visitors suggests a differentiation between types of modernity, which is influenced by the differences between Continental and British urban systems. It reveals instead that the public expression of anti-Catholic opinion was a regular feature of the city's political scene in this period. An anti-Catholic 'crusade', directed against such local targets as Prior Park and Downside colleges, and 'Popery' in general, was sustained by a variety of local organizations and national organizations that had branches in Bath, as well as prominent Tory activists resident in the city. Many Irish-born evangelical clergymen played a prominent role in this crusade. It is not surprising, given the prominence of Irish clergymen in Bath's anti-Catholic movement, that protests against the state endowment of Maynooth College were popular with the city's anti-Popery activists; furthermore, several proselytizing organizations whose principal aim was the conversion of Ireland's Catholics to the Protestant faith had a permanent base in Bath. The perceived iniquitous effects of 'Popery' in Ireland formed part of the anti-Catholic crusade's propaganda message. While the anti-Popery cause appealed particularly to the city's Church of England community, with many of its clergymen and prominent lay Anglicans to the fore of the anti-Catholic agitation, it attracted support from all sections of Protestant society. It supplies critical realist concepts that are only implicit in the analysis, for example 'the pulse of freedom', and suggests a provisional critical realist typology of utopian epochs on the basis of the one that Beaumont implicitly deploys, thereby demonstrating that critical realism can sharpen, deepen and add a more adequate philosophical rationale to substantive Marxist analysis even when, like Beaumont's, it is an outstanding example of its kind. By the same token, it shows that analyses such as Beaumont's can make important contributions to critical realism.
