Background: Internet psychology services are rapidly increasing and that implies online assessment. To guarantee the results of these new online evaluation procedures, it is necessary to have reliable and valid assessment tools. Objective: In this work we analyzed the online versions of two popular psychopathology screening questionnaires: the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) and the Symptoms Check-List-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Methods: A total of 185 psychology students were recruited from two universities in Madrid, Spain. All of them had Internet access at home. A test-retest situation and factorial analysis were used to generate reliability and validity data. Both paper-and-pencil questionnaires (test) and their online versions (retest) were completed by 100 participants (median gap = 17 days). Results: Results suggest that both online questionnaires were fairly equivalent to their paper-and-pencil versions, with higher reliability values for the SCL-90-R. Factorial analysis tended to reproduce the structure shown in former investigations of both questionnaires, replicating the four-factor structure of the GHQ-28 but failing to do so with the nine-factor structure of the SCL-90-R. Instead, a large unrotated factor appeared. Conclusions: Further research should be carried out to confirm these data, but our work supports the online use of both assessment tools. The psychometric properties of the online version of GHQ-28 is similar to the paper-and-pencil and we can recommend its utilization in a Web environment. In contrast, SCL-90-R can only be recommended as a global index for psychological distress, using the Global Severity Index (GSI), not necessarily its subscales; and it should be considered that the online scores were lower than the ones with the paper-and-pencil version. • Socio-demographic attributes and daily habits influence the COVID-19 infection. • Madrid's measures make public transport a relatively safe option during the pandemic. • High crowding increases the risk of COVID-19 on certain public transport services. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed people's mobility patterns, increasing the preference for private modes and reducing the public transportation demand. Most scientific contributions have studied the role of mobility levels in the spread of the virus and the influence of public transport on COVID-19 infections, but ignoring the importance of individual-level variables potentially affecting COVID-19 infection, such as daily habits. This paper analyses the relationship between the probability of being infected by COVID-19 and using public transport through a survey data analysis, taking Madrid (Spain) as the case study. This research uses a survey campaign with more than 15,000 responses, capturing socio-demographic aspects, COVID-19 infections, daily habits, and mobility patterns with high risk of COVID-19 infection. Through a multilevel probit model, this paper explores the extent to which a higher use of public transport is related to a greater likelihood of COVID-19 infection. The results suggest a relationship, although not very strong, between the probability of infection and the conjunction of higher frequency of use of metro services and level of crowding during the trip, whereas the use of bus services and travel time within the vehicle do not appear to affect. This paper explores the hypothesis that devoicing and deletion of /-d/ can index Madrilenian localness in part because of how these variants are experienced when they happen in the city's name. Drawing on the notions of enregisterment and metapragmatic stereotypes, this study examines how sociolinguistic variation and linguistic ideology contribute to this indexicality. The data set consists of readings, sociolinguistic interviews, and metalinguistic talk produced by 35 participants from multiple neighborhoods in Madrid. Quantitative analyses examine how /-d/ allophony in the word Madrid patterns with speakers' characteristics and speech style. A qualitative analysis explores the explicit form-meaning links that emerge in participants' evaluative comments about various ways of saying Madrid, as well as the underlying ideologies these associations reveal. Results show correlations in usage and recurrent discursive patterns that support the study's hypothesis. When the word Madrid is used and talked about, the social deixis of /-d/ allophony interacts with the place deictic function of the word to conjure up certain indexicalities that can be exploited to construct locally meaningful personae. By exploring the interaction between phonetic variation and the pragmatic practice of place naming, this study expands our understanding of the development of social meaning, specifically localness. This paper describes the principles, analysis and capacities of the axial-deck method developed in research on the optimization of the curved bridges directrices takin place at the UPM university in Madrid. The axial-deck method focuses on the two main structural challenges of curved cable-stayed bridges: the horizontal component of the load introduced by the stay cables on the deck; and the big torsion forces in the deck due to the unbalanced cable-stayed system. Hitherto, these problems have been addressed, either by optimizing the position of the tower and its geometric characteristics, or by modifying the morphology of the stay-cable system. Very little has been written about the possibilities of linking the structural behaviour to the deck directrix. This paper starts by describing the ideal solution equations, without considering the structure as statically indeterminate. Then, based on these equations, it follows the evolution of the method to a nonlinear iterative system. This evolution allows designs to be developed that consider the flexibility relation of all the structural systems involved in the problems. Finally, the method is validated with the redesign of two existing curved pedestrian bridges from prestigious engineering firms and the paper concludes with a structural behaviour analysis of all designs. ATTITUDES toward language ,GENDER ,ATTITUDE (Psychology) - Abstract
This paper explores the identities that Madrileños ascribe to speakers using velarized coda /s/. The language attitudes of 59 participants from Madrid were assessed by means of a matched guise survey in which they heard native Madrileños using either sibilant coda /s/ or velarized coda /s/. Results show that while Madrileños do perceive the velarized variant as a marker of a Madrid origin, this effect is mainly observed for female voices. In addition, speakers that used velarized /s/ were associated with more negative qualities and viewed as less desirable as friends and storytellers, although for certain traits, the strength of this effect depended on the gender of the listener. Furthermore, velarized /s/ is associated with low-prestige occupations while more prestigious professions are assigned to guises with sibilant /s/. The results presented in this paper suggest that, although the characteristic ejque is associated with Madrid, the velarized variant is in fact quite stigmatized in the Spanish capital. The optical telegraphic system was introduced in Spain in 1844. In fact, more than a hundred towers were built to connect Madrid to Irún, Valencia and the Andalusia. Decommissioned at the end of the nineteenth century, despite their historical value, the towers are today abandoned with a high level of material and functional obsolescence, waiting for a new utilization. In light of the above-mentioned aspects, the research aims at the identification, cataloguing and qualification of the telegraphic towers located on the pathway from Madrid to Valencia in order to propose a large-scale territorial project for their preservation and enhancement. In particular, the paper is going to describe, first, a historical and morphological evolution of the telegraphic towers. Second, a methodology for qualification of the architectural, material, constructive and functional characteristics of the towers is reported, with a specific reference to the given case study of the telegraphic paths between Madrid and Valencia. Finally, a redevelopment scenario is proposed for the restoration of the towers as well as for their integration in a cycling and pedestrian naturalistic pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The feminisation of energy poverty in the city of Madrid is currently impossible to measure through statistics for those women who are not the main breadwinners. However, a crescent body of knowledge about qualitative research applied to the study of energy poverty has disclosed several aspects related to vulnerability to energy poverty and its impacts. The paper shows the results of a qualitative characterisation of 16 women from Madrid based on interviews conducted during the winters of 2019 and 2020, before and after the COVID-19 lockdown. Four different ways in which gender roles shape experiences of energy poverty are revealed. First, the assumption of responsibility for the home well-being is intrinsically linked to women's identity. Second, how patterns and habits of energy consumption are influenced because of gender. In the third place, how emotions are not only a consequence of suffering from energy poverty but can also help to hide it. Lastly, segregation of capabilities by gender roles from the early age contributes to condition knowledge of household energy management. The importance of reformulating gender inequality dynamics by focusing on personal experience and being able to extract conclusions joining quantitative studies shall be included in future studies. • Qualitative research applied to the study of energy poverty has disclosed several aspects related to its impacts. • The assumption of responsibility for the home well-being is intrinsically linked to women's identity • Patterns and habits of energy consumption are influenced because of gender. • Emotions are not only a consequence of suffering from energy poverty but can also help to hide it. • Segregation of capabilities by gender roles since the early ages has an impact on knowledge of household energy management. JOURNALISM ,LITERATURE reviews - Abstract
Newsgames has constructed narratives based on real-world issues containing journalistic principles. Since the first experiment of Kabool Kaboom in 2001, game developers have released a number of newsgames based on current events. The main purpose of newsgames is to represent current important issues with a different approach in terms of designs and language. A question has arisen regarding the aim and the effectiveness: Do newsgames can convey the mainstream journalistic approach? Through reviewing Bogost, Bogost, Ferrari, and Schweizer's (2010) concept on newsgames, this paper presents a theoretical concept of analyzing the game contents compared to mainstream journalism. The main objective of this essay is to determine if it is feasible to use these newsgames to tell a narrative while idealizing the fundamentals of journalism and doing so in a meaningful manner, such as by increasing public awareness of a significant event or subj ect. Six different newsgames were analyzed in relation to empathy, representation, and the most important of all objectivity- Kabool Kaboom (produced by Gonzalo Frasca, 2001), Madrid (newsgaming.com, 2004), September 12th (Powerful Robot Games, 2003), The Refugee Challenge (The Guardian, 2014), Against All Odds (United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, 2005) and The Migrant Trail (Software Studio Gigantic Mechanic and filmmaker Macro Williams, 2013). This study adds new findings to the literature review of previous articles adjoining the effectiveness of the newsgames compared to the conventional journalistic approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the negative reviews that some users of social services in New York and Madrid posted on Google. The aim is to relate the impoliteness strategies that the users of these centres reported to have received or that they issued themselves with the cultural values of the groups they belong to. To achieve this, twenty American and Spanish centres were analysed, obtaining more than two hundred negative comments that, qualitatively and quantitatively analysed, were related to impoliteness strategies. These impoliteness strategies were linked to the four social characteristics already presented in a previous study. Also, the chi-square formula was applied to the data. Thus, this study has shown that the use that speakers make of impoliteness strategies is related to the cultural values of the group they belong to. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Much critical scholarship on highways focuses on negative impacts, but there is growing attention to removal as an opportunity to undo their harms. • The "de-infrastructuring" of urban highways—whether by repurposing or removal— involves contests over both mobility and urban development. • Infrastructural obduracy is shaped by political, economic, and social factors. • Reconfiguring transport infrastructure invokes distributional questions over flow and place that render highways potent sites of urban contestation. • Broadening the scale of highway removal is essential for thinking about post-car urban futures. One of the most visible infrastructural legacies of the 20th century is the urban highway, which underpinned the massive transformations of cities and regions in the postwar period. As concerns grow about the climate impacts of car travel and urban sprawl, however, cities across the world have begun to remove or repurpose sections of urban highways to try and heal the social, economic, and ecological scars of their construction and promote sustainable urban development. These processes speak to key scholarly debates in geography and cognate fields on the relationship between transport infrastructure and processes of urban change. In this paper we explore two cases of what we call the "de-infrastructuring" of automobility: the piecemeal pedestrian appropriation of the Minhocão elevated highway in São Paulo and the ongoing political conflicts over the burial of the A-5 highway in Madrid. In each case, the peopling of highway infrastructure—whether by temporary occupation or permanent removal—is both a popular demand and a potential component of urban redevelopment strategies designed to channel investment back into the spaces that these infrastructures devalued. At the same time, these projects are ongoing, contested, and uncertain, and constitute broadly piecemeal and somewhat ephemeral attempts at repair, rather than more systemic approaches to undoing automobility and its socioecological impacts. Highway restructuring in São Paulo and Madrid therefore raises crucial questions about urban socioecological restructuring and the prospects for a just post-automobile city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing use of online hospitality platforms provides firsthand information about clients preferences, which are essential to improve hotel services and increase the quality of service perception. Customer reviews can be used to automatically extract the most relevant aspects of the quality of service for hospitality clientele. This paper proposes a framework for the assessment of the quality of service in the hospitality sector based on the exploitation of customer reviews through natural language processing and machine learning methods. The proposed framework automatically discovers the quality of service aspects relevant to hotel customers. Hotel reviews from Bogotá and Madrid are automatically scrapped from Booking.com. Semantic information is inferred through Latent Dirichlet Allocation and FastText, which allow representing text reviews as vectors. A dimensionality reduction technique is applied to visualise and interpret large amounts of customer reviews. Visualisations of the most important quality of service aspects are generated, allowing to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the quality of service. Results show that it is possible to automatically extract the main quality of service aspects perceived by customers from large customer review datasets. These findings could be used by hospitality managers to understand clients better and to improve the quality of service. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While scenario-building has proven useful in situations marked by considerable uncertainty in the context of land use and transport policymaking, additional research is needed to develop adaptive and dynamic scenario-building schemes. To address this gap, the present paper conceptualises an adaptive scenario-building approach that would facilitate adaptive policy responses by using exploratory scenarios as intermediate tipping points. An empirical research design is also conducted following a participatory approach, with a case study of the Henares Corridor in the Metropolitan Area of Madrid, Spain. Three exploratory scenarios are assessed as experimental tipping points for the basic policy pathways initially adopted by regional and local governments. The use of such tipping points suggested different adaptive policy responses: (i) preserving policy responses when exploratory scenarios are strongly aligned with the basic pathways; and (ii) transforming policy responses when significant deviations are perceived between the exploratory scenarios and the basic pathways. The paper also discusses the real-life application potential of this adaptive scenario-building approach, further research steps, and future horizons for scenario-building. • It is proposed a conceptual framework for an adaptive scenario-building approach. • Exploratory scenarios are used as intermediate tipping points. • A proof-of-concepts is conducted in the Henares corridor (Spain). • Different adaptive policy responses are defined and discussed for the case study. TERRORISTS ,TERRORISM ,MADRID Train Bombings, Madrid, Spain, 2004 - Abstract
There is a growing recognition that not only individual but also collective action is socially embedded. For a long time, research on social movements has highlighted that networks play a fundamental role in structuring their strategies and activities, but less is known so far about other collective actors, such as terrorist and insurgents groups. The terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 and March 11th 2004 provide a clear illustration of the importance of network relational systems in shaping collective action. One of the greatest difficulties for understanding the character of these new collective actors is precisely to grasp their configuration and dynamics as networks. Dominant theoretical and methodological approaches in Sociology (focusing on individual actors and categorical groupings) are usually not well suited for this task. This paper aims at deepening our understanding of terrorist activities by taking advantage of the opportunities that network analysis opens for studying and visualizing the composition and dynamics of the terrorist networks responsible for the March 11th bombing of several trains in Madrid. The tools of network analysis enable us to highlight "relational qualities" of the main actors involved in the plot (such as their centrality, capacity to serve as a bridge between different groups, channel information, etc) and the broader characteristics of the network that facilitated the commission of the action (internal cohesion, stability, flexibility). The main finding of this paper is that loose ties are the key feature of this network. Loose connections enable terrorist cells to maintain operative ties with a broader network from which they can draw material support and receive ideological instigation. In addition, they present three additional advantages over strong ties for clandestine terrorist groups: 1) they give them stability in the face of arrests or mission failures, 2) they confer flexibility, so that last minute adaptations can be made, 3) and security, in that they remain largely invisible to police forces [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CORMA is a corpus of peninsular Spanish including spontaneous conversations recorded in Madrid between 2016 and 2019. The corpus was compiled in order to remedy the scarce documentation of 21st century colloquial Spanish. Indeed, a short overview of the corpora of conversational Spanish shows that there is a sharp contrast between the increasing interest in linguistic phenomena representative of this variety and the availability of suitable empirical data. This paper discusses the different steps that were taken to build the dataset, and presents the main characteristics of the final CORMA corpus. It also includes an illustration of how the data can be successfully exploited through a pilot study of the rise and spread of the intensification marker mazo (de) in young speak since the beginning of the 21st century. The Basque Y High Speed Rail connection between Madrid and the Basque Autonomous Community is, quite exceptionally, a mixed freight and passengers HSR line, that has been presented as a fundamental step towards a more sustainable mobility. In this paper, a life-cycle assessment (LCA) is conducted to assess the environmental performance of the line throughout its lifetime, based on the latest data available, including both construction and maintenance burdens. Results show that this new corridor is not justified in terms of reducing emissions and energy consumption, mainly due to its low transport density. It also has a negligible impact on Spanish current low rail freight traffic. We conclude, therefore, that Spain needs to reconsider its AVE network expansion if aiming at increasing rail's modal share and meeting the emissions targets set by the EU. From a policy perspective, many information inconsistencies have been found regarding the demand projections of freight transport, which cast serious doubt about the decision-making process behind Trans-European transport projects. [Display omitted] • Life-cycle assessment (LCA) of the Basque Y high-speed rail line under construction in 2023. • It verifies whether this project is justified in terms of environmental impacts reductions. • Net balance of the Basque Y high-speed rail is very modest, when not detrimental. • This project would not be justified in terms of environmental impacts reductions. • Alternatives to high-speed rail in the transport hierarchy provide better environmental balance. After decades of sprawl and car-dependent urban developments, especially on the peripheries of metropolitan areas, new policies are being oriented towards more efficient and sustainable mobility. In the process of change towards more sustainable mobility patterns in peripheral areas, commuter railways must play a predominant role because of their capacity and speed. The main aim of this paper is to analyse commuter rail stations' catchment areas (SCAs) to identify typologies of these nodes in large metropolitan areas as a key step in proposing strategies for making mobility much more sustainable, both in the medium and proximity scales, by promoting soft mobility towards stations, a strategy that will facilitate commuters' use of daily rail transport. The method proposed is based on a twofold clustering analysis. The first is to consider urban-planning variables to detect consolidated stations; the second is to use both public space and land-use variables to characterise the quality of the urban environment for walking/cycling. These methods are applied in the metropolitan area of Madrid and offer some key insights. The results show that different typologies are found – from consolidated, dense and mixed-use SCAs, with large residential developments, to low-density SCAs in sprawl areas or low consolidated mixed-use SCAs with large parking spaces, following the park-and-ride model, among others. This identification of SCAs' typologies is key for policy makers to propose different strategies, which could be small projects oriented towards improving public spaces promoting soft mobility, or deeper changes that require a re-densification process in the stations' surroundings, breaking with the rigid definition of transit-oriented developments and adapting the decisions taken to each context. • We identify typologies of commuter rail stations' catchment areas (SCAs) in the metropolitan area of Madrid. • This is a key step in proposing strategies for sustainable mobility. • A twofold clustering analysis is proposed, considering first, urban planning and then, public space and land-use variables. • We found typologies such as dense and mixed-use SCAs or low consolidated SCAs following the park-and-ride model. • The identification of SCAs' typologies is key for policy makers, breaking with the rigid definition of TODs. While air transport brings very significant economic and social benefits to the cities and regions served by airports, aircraft noise is the single major cause of community opposition to airport operations, becoming a critical issue that affects the sustainability of future traffic growth. However, planning operations exclusively focusing on noise impact may result in an increase of fuel consumption or delays. This paper develops a suitable bi-objective model for landing aircraft, which finds a schedule that minimises noise impact, total fuel consumption and delays, under wake vortex separation and Constrained Position Shifting restrictions. The results of this model are compared with real operations in a major European airport to assess the potential level of improvements. By comparing with real data from Madrid-Barajas airport, the research shows potential improvements of up to 4.5% reduction of total fuel consumption (without increasing noise levels) only by modifying the sequence of arrivals, and up to 43% (without extra fuel consumption) of reduction in noise impact over the populations under study. • Reduce fuel consumption and delays considering CPS restrictions is possible. • Current schedule can be improved in terms of noise and fuel without changing STAR routes. • A whole Pareto frontier of better solutions in terms of noise and fuel can be easily found. • Experiments using Madrid airport showed significant improvements vs. current operation. • Congestion has a big influence in the possibilities of scheduling improvement. The issues of immigrant reception and integration have attracted ample migration scholarship. However, less attention has been paid to the significance of culture in both welcome and incorporation outcomes for immigrants in Western Europe. This paper explores how culture and identity politics influence both the inclusion-exclusion and political integration of foreign populations in the new migration spaces of Dublin and Madrid. Through the examination of four case studies, namely Poles and Nigerians in Dublin and Bulgarians and Ecuadorians in Madrid, the paper surveys how the identity characteristics, both those of the newcomers and their host societies, affect the discourses of inclusion and exclusion of ethnic communities in the receiving cities. Next, the article turns to the role of cultural identity in the formation of immigrants' own perceptions of belonging or isolation in the host society. Finally, the paper studies how the granting and exercise of political rights connects with both the reception discourses and immigrants' notions of belonging in the host cities. AIR pollution ,AIR quality ,POLITICAL doctrines - Abstract
• The main goal is to identify key factors determining modal shift caused by a LEZ. • "Madrid Central" LEZ triggered a notable modal shift towards sustainable modes. • The highest modal shift rates are observed among car users. • Modal shift is mainly explained by mobility habits and socio-demographic variables. • Environmental awareness and political ideology do not play a key role. Although Low Emission Zones (LEZs) have been adopted to address the environmental challenge of improving air quality in urban contexts worldwide, limited attention has been paid to studying their effects on promoting a shift to greener modes. This paper aims to gain insight into that issue by studying the case of "Madrid Central", a LEZ recently implemented in Spain. A survey campaign was conducted to explore changes in modal shift declared by respondents due to the LEZ implementation. Based on that, a discrete choice analysis was conducted to identify key factors determining changes in the modal share after implementing the LEZ. The results show the high impact of the LEZ on decreasing car use and promoting cleaner modes thereby contributing to reduce air pollution. The paper concludes that modal shift is mainly associated with socio-demographic variables, individual perceptions towards LEZs and mobility habits. By contrast, attitudinal variables were not found relevant for explaining modal shift. The effectiveness of "Madrid Central" in reducing car use provides policy-makers with lessons and a guidelines for implementing LEZs. Given the scarcity of research about that specific topic, the results are scalable to other experiences in the international context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
