Purpose: In places without adequate health facilities, community health workers (CHWs) are employed by local governments to help families with health promotion activities. However, amidst the difficulties, mobile health applications (mHealth) are being increasingly developed in order to facilitate the work of the CHW. This work is a systematic review (SR) of the use of mHealth and the impact it has had so far in improving the health system and service delivery by the CHWs. Method: This SR was based on the 27 PRISMA recommendations. We used the PICOS tool to specify the components of this review (eligibility criteria, keywords, etc.) and the StArt software to organize and control the articles exported from digital databases (PubMed, SciELO, etc.) from 2009 to 2019. The studies accepted for reading in their entirety underwent an analysis of their risk of bias, through the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: The studies showed that mobile health intervention has a strong link with health care, mainly in the provision of community care services, maternal and child health care, sexual diseases, and infectious diseases, among others. This happens especially in rural or other areas of difficult access, such as countries in Africa, which occupies 61% of selected articles. However, it is believed that these applications have great potential and could help CHWs provide better disease prevention care. Conclusion: The use of mHealth by CHWs has become typical in many regions of the world and is believed to have the potential to improve health service delivery in hard-to-reach or resource-limited settings.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) synthesize magnetite and greigite crystals under low oxygen conditions in the water column or uppermost sediment (greigite‐producing bacteria are found below the oxic‐anoxic transition). Dissolved iron and oxygen contents in local environments are known to be limiting factors for the production and preservation of biogenic magnetite. Understanding the processes that link MTB to their living environments is fundamental to reconstructing past chemical variations in the water column and sediment, and for using the magnetic properties of biogenic magnetite as environmental proxy indicators. Previous studies have suggested that the frequently identified biogenic soft (BS) and biogenic hard (BH) magnetite types are associated with equant and more elongated morphologies, respectively, and that their abundance varies in accordance with sedimentary oxygen content, where MTB that produce the BH component live in less oxygenated environments. We test this hypothesis in a high‐resolution integrated environmental magnetic and geochemical study of surface sediments from Mamanguá Ría, SE Brazil. Based on magnetic and pore water profiles, we demonstrate that both the BS and BH components occur within microaerobic environments and that as sediment oxygen content decreases with depth, the BS component disappears before the BH component. With continued burial into the sulfidic diagenetic zone, both components undergo progressive dissolution, but the BH component is more resistant to dissolution than the BS component. Our observations confirm previous inferences about the relative stability of these phases and provide a firmer basis for use of these two types of biogenic magnetite as paleoenvironmental proxies. In prepubertal bulls, FSH facilitates testis maturation and a transient proliferation of Sertoli cells. Two experiments examined the effects of exogenous FSH on hormone secretion and testis development in Angus bulls. Exogenous FSH treatment consisted of an intramuscular injection (i.m.) of 30 mg FSH (Folltropin-V) in a 2% hyaluronic acid solution (FSH-HA). In Exp. 1, bulls (50 ± 6.5 d of age) received either FSH-HA (n= 5) or saline (control; n= 5) on d 50 and 53.5. Blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture to assess FSH concentrations every 6 h for 24 h after treatment and every 12 h until 84 h. After each treatment, peripheral FSH concentrations were greater (P< 0.05) in the FSH-HA–treated bulls than in the control bulls 6 h after treatment and tended to be greater (P≤ 0.08) 12 h after treatment. The FSH concentration from 18 to 84 h after treatment did not differ between treatments. In Exp. 2, bulls were treated with FSH-HA (n= 11) or saline (control; n= 11) every 3.5 d from 35 to 91 ± 2 d of age. Blood samples were collected before each treatment to quantify FSH, testosterone, and activin A concentrations. Scrotal circumference (SC) and BW were measured weekly. Bulls were castrated at 93 ± 2 d of age. Seminiferous tubule diameter, testis composition, and the number of Sertoli cells per tubule cross section (GATA-4 positive staining) were determined from fixed and stained histological sections. Follicle-stimulating hormone concentrations within the FSH-HA–treated bulls increased (P< 0.05) on d 70 from prior sampling and remained elevated. The FSH concentration did not differ between treatments from 35 to 66.5 d of age but were greater (P< 0.05) in the FSH-HA–treated bulls than in the control bulls from 70 to 91 d of age. Serum concentration of activin A on d 35, 70, and 91 did not differ between treatments. The FSH-HA and control bulls did not differ (P> 0.1) in BW, SC, testis weight, testis volume, percent of parenchyma composed of tubules, tubule diameter, and concentration of testosterone. The number of Sertoli cells per tubule cross section was greater in the FSH-HA–treated bulls than in the control bulls (33.35 ± 0.9 vs. 28.27 ± 0.9 cells; P˂ 0.05). In summary, the FSH-HA treatment from 35 to 91 d of age resulted in increased endogenous FSH from 70 to 91 d and increased numbers of Sertoli cells at 93 d of age. Exogenous FSH altered endocrine mechanisms regulating endogenous FSH secretion and augmented Sertoli cell proliferation in young bulls, but this effect was apparently not caused by increased activin A concentration in the FSH-HA–treated bulls.

The objective of this study was to determine if the omission of GnRH at controlled internal drug release device (CIDR) insertion would impact pregnancy rates to timed AI (TAI) in beef heifers enrolled in a 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol that used 1 PGF2αdose given at CIDR removal. Yearling beef heifers in Ohio in 2 consecutive breeding seasons (2011, n= 151, and 2012, n= 143; Angus × Simmental), Utah (2012, n= 265; Angus × Hereford), Idaho (2012, n= 127; Charolais), and Wyoming (2012, n= 137; Angus) were enrolled in the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol. At CIDR insertion (d -5), heifers were randomly assigned either to receive 100 μg GnRH (GnRH+; n= 408) or not to receive GnRH (GnRH–; n= 415). At CIDR removal (d 0 of the experiment), 25 mg PGF2αwas administered to all heifers. All heifers were inseminated by TAI and given 100 μg GnRH 72 h after PGF2α(d 3). In heifers at the Ohio locations (n= 294), presence of a corpus luteum (CL) at CIDR insertion (d –5) was determined via assessment of progesterone concentrations (2011) and ovarian ultrasonography (2012). Subsequently, in both years, ovarian ultrasound was conducted on d 0 to determine the presence of a new CL. In this same subgroup of heifers, blood samples for progesterone analysis were collected on d 3 to assess luteal regression. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed between 32 and 38 d after TAI. At CIDR withdrawal, presence of a new CL was greater (P< 0.05) in the GnRH+ (55.8%, 82/147) than GnRH– (26.5%, 39/147) treatment. Incidence of failed luteal regression did not differ between the GnRH+ (3.4%) and GnRH– (0.7%) treatments. Pregnancy rate to TAI did not differ between the GnRH+ (50.5%) and GnRH– (54.9%) treatments. In conclusion, although the incidence of a new CL at CIDR removal was increased in the GnRH+ treatment, omission of the initial GnRH treatment in the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol did not influence TAI pregnancy rate in yearling beef heifers. In addition, a single dose of PGF2αat CIDR removal was effective at inducing luteolysis in yearling beef heifers enrolled in the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol, regardless of whether or not the initial GnRH treatment was given.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of age of the ovulatory follicle on fertility in beef heifers. Ovulation was synchronized with the 5 d CO-Synch + controlled intravaginal drug release (CIDR) program in heifers in Montana (MT; n= 162, Hereford and Angus Crossbred) and Ohio (OH; n= 170, Angus Crossbred). All heifers received estradiol benzoate (EB; 1 mg/500 kg BW, [i.m.]) 6 d after the final GnRH of the synchronization program to induce follicular atresia and emergence of a new follicular wave (NFW) followed by prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α; 25 mg, i.m.) administration either 5 d (“young” follicle [YF]; n= 158) or 9 d (“mature” follicle [MF]; n= 174) after EB. Estrous detection was performed for 5 d after PGF2αwith AI approximately 12 h after onset of estrus. Ovarian ultrasonography (MT location only) was performed in YF and MF at EB, 5 d after EB, PGF2α, and AI. Heifers in MT (n= 20) and OH (n= 18) that were not presynchronized or did not initiate a NFW were excluded from further analyses, resulting in 142 and 152 heifers in MT and OH, respectively. Heifers from the MF treatment in MT that initiated a second NFW after EB but before PGF2α(MF2; n= 14) were excluded from the primary analysis. In the secondary analysis, the MF2 group was compared to MF and YF treatments in MT. Estrous response was similar (90%; 252/280) between treatments and locations. Proestrus interval (from PGF2αto estrus) and age of the ovulatory follicle at AI were similar for MF heifers between locations (54.6 ± 1.7 h and 8.3 ± 0.07 h) but were greater (P< 0.01) for YF heifers in OH (78.5 ± 1.4 h and 5.3 ± 0.06 h) than MT (67.4 ± 1.6 h and 4.8 ± 0.06 h; treatment × location, P< 0.01). However, conception rate did not differ for MF (63.8%; 74/116) and YF (67.0%; 91/136) treatments. In the MT heifers, follicle size and follicle age at AI in the YF treatment (10.4 ± 0.15 mm and 4.8 ± 0.06 d, respectively) was less (P< 0.01) than in the MF treatment (11.0 ± 0.18 mm and 8.3 ± 0.11 d, respectively), but conception rate to AI did not differ between treatments in MT. In the MF2 group proestrus interval was greater (P< 0.01); hence, diameter of the ovulatory follicle and age were similar to that for the YF treatment. Conception rate to AI did not differ between MF2, MF, and YF (61.5, 63.3, and 64.7%, respectively) in MT. In conclusion, manipulation of age of the nonpersistent ovulatory follicle at spontaneous ovulation did not influence conception rate.

The effect of the age of the ovulatory follicle on fertility in beef cows was investigated. Multiparous (n = 171) and primiparous (n = 129) postpartum beef cows in 2 groups (G1 and G2) received estradiol benzoate (EB; 1 mg/500 kg BW, intramuscular [i.m.]) 5.5 d (G1; n = 162) and 6.5 d (G2; n = 138) after the final GnRH of a synchronization program (5d CO-Synch + CIDR) to induce emergence of a new follicular wave (NFW), followed by prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α; 25 mg, i.m.) administration either 5.5 d (“young” follicle, YF; n = 155) or 9.5 d (“mature” follicle, MF; n = 145) after EB. Estrous detection coupled with AI 12 h later (estrus-AI) was performed for 60 h (MF) and 84 h (YF) after PGF2α; cows not detected in estrus within this period received timed AI (TAI) coupled with GnRH at 72 and 96 h, respectively. Within the first 72 h after PGF2α, more (P < 0.01) cows in the MF (76.3%) than YF treatment (47.7%) exhibited estrus, but through 96 h, the proportion detected in estrus (P < 0.05) and interval from PGF2αto estrus (P < 0.01) were greater in the YF than MF treatment (88.6% vs. 76.3%, 78.9 ± 0.8 vs. 57.5 ± 1.6 h, respectively). Age of the ovulatory follicle at AI was greater (P < 0.01) in the MF (9.32 ± 0.04 d) than YF (6.26 ± 0.02 d) treatment, but follicle diameter at AI and pregnancy rates did not differ between MF (13.1 ± 0.2 mm; 72.0%) and YF (12.9 ± 0.1 mm; 67.1%) treatments. Regardless of treatment, the diameter of the ovulatory follicle at AI and pregnancy rate were greater (P < 0.01) with estrus-AI (13.1 ± 0.1 mm; 75.0%) than TAI (12.6 ± 0.2 mm; 55.4%). Cows in the MF treatment that initiated a second NFW after EB but before PGF2α(MF2; n= 47) were induced to ovulate with GnRH and TAI at 72h, when ovulatory follicles were 4 d old and 10.2 ± 0.2 mm in diameter. Pregnancy rate for TAI (51.1%) in MF2 did not differ from TAI pregnancy rate (55.4%) across the MF and YF treatments. In summary, the age of the ovulatory follicle affected interval to estrus and AI but did not influence pregnancy rate in suckled beef cows.

Reproductive failure in livestock can result from failure to fertilize the oocyte or embryonic loss during gestation. Although fertilization failure occurs, embryonic mortality represents a greater contribution to reproductive failure. Reproductive success varies among species and production goals but is measured as a binomial trait (i.e., pregnancy), derived by the success or failure of multiple biological steps. This review focuses primarily on follicular characteristics affecting oocyte quality, fertilization, and embryonic health that lead to pregnancy establishment in beef cattle. When estrous cycles are manipulated with assisted reproductive technologies and ovulation is induced, duration of proestrus (i.e., interval from induced luteolysis to induced ovulation), ovulatory follicle growth rate, and ovulatory follicle size are factors that affect the maturation of the follicle and oocyte at induced ovulation. The most critical maturational component of the ovulatory follicle is the production of sufficient estradiol to prepare follicular cells for luteinization and progesterone synthesis and prepare the uterus for pregnancy. The exact roles of estradiol in oocyte maturation remain unclear, but cows that have lesser serum concentrations of estradiol have decreased fertilization rates and decreased embryo survival on d 7 after induced ovulation. When length of proestrus is held constant, perhaps the most practical follicular measure of fertility is ovulatory follicle size because it is an easily measured attribute of the follicle that is highly associated with its ability to produce estradiol.

A single ovulation, reciprocal embryo transfer study was used to investigate effects of oocyte competence and maternal environment on pregnancy establishment and maintenance in beef cows. Estrous cycles were synchronized in suckled beef cows and embryo donors were inseminated on d 0 (n = 810). Cows were classified on d 0 as having a small (<12.5 mm) or large (≥12.5 mm) ovulatory follicle and randomly chosen as donors or recipients to remove confounding effects of ovulatory follicle size on fertility. Embryos (n = 393) or oocytes (n = 44) were recovered on d 7, and all viable embryos were transferred into recipients (n = 354). All statistical analyses were conducted using the GLM procedure of SAS. Path analysis (with significance set at P < 0.10) was used to examine potential cause-effect relationships among the measured variables. Greater donor cow BW, circulating estradiol concentration at insemination, postpartum interval, and ovulatory follicle size directly increased (P < 0.10) fertilization success. Greater donor cow age was the only factor that directly decreased (P < 0.10) fertilization success. Viability of d-7 embryos was directly inhibited (P < 0.10) by rapid follicular growth rate from d -2 to 0 and heavier BW. Direct beneficial effects to embryo viability were increased serum progesterone concentration on d -2 and ovulatory follicle size. Pregnancy maintenance from d 7 to 27 was enhanced (P < 0.10) by increased serum estradiol concentration on d 0 and progesterone concentration on d 7 in the recipient cow. Increased follicular diameter in the recipient cow on d 0 was detrimental to pregnancy maintenance from d 7 to 27. This manuscript defines the complex interplay and relative contributions of endocrine and physical factors both prior and subsequent to fertilization that influence both oocyte competence and maternal environment and their roles in establishment and maintenance of pregnancy.

At the initiation of most controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device protocols, GnRH has been used to induce ovulation and reset follicular waves; however, its ability to initiate a new follicular wave is variable and dependent on stage of the estrous cycle. The objectives of the current studies were to determine 1) if inducing luteal regression before the injection of GnRH at time of insertion of a CIDR resulted in increased control of follicular development, and 2) if removing endogenous progesterone by inducing luteal regression before insertion of the CIDR decreased variation in LH pulse frequency. In Exp. 1 and 2, Angus-cross cycling beef heifers (n = 22 and 38, respectively) were allotted to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) heifers received an injection of PGF2αon d −3, an injection of GnRH and insertion of a CIDR on d 0, and a PGF2αinjection and CIDR removal on d 6 (PG-CIDR) or 2) an injection of GnRH and insertion of a CIDR on d 0 and on d 7 an injection of PGF2αand removal of CIDR (Select Synch + CIDR). In Exp. 3, Angus-cross beef heifers (n = 15) were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) PG-CIDR; 2) PGF2αon d −3, GnRH on d 0, and PGF2αon d 6 (PG-No CIDR); or 3) Select Synch + CIDR. Follicular development and ovulatory response were determined by transrectal ultrasonography. Across all experiments, more (P= 0.02) heifers treated with PG before GnRH initiated a new follicular wave after the injection of GnRH compared with Select Synch + CIDR-treated heifers. In Exp. 1, after CIDR removal, interval to estrus did not differ (P= 0.18) between treatments; however, the variance for the interval to estrus was reduced (P< 0.01) in PG-CIDR heifers compared with Select Synch + CIDR heifers. In Exp. 3, there was a tendency (P= 0.09) for LH pulse frequency to be greater among PG-CIDR and PG-No CIDR compared with the Select Synch + CIDR, but area under the curve, mean LH concentrations, and mean amplitude did not differ (P> 0.76). In summary, induction of luteal regression before an injection of GnRH increased the percentage of heifers initiating a new follicular wave. Removal of endogenous progesterone tended to increase LH pulse frequency, and the modified treatment increased the synchrony of estrus after CIDR removal.

A fundamental problem in immunology is that of understanding how the immune system selects promptly which cells to kill without harming the body. This problem poses an apparent paradox. Strong reactivity against pathogens seems incompatible with perfect tolerance towards self. We propose a different view on cellular reactivity to overcome this paradox: effector functions should be seen as the outcome of cellular decisions which can be in conflict with other cells' decisions. We argue that if cellular systems are frustrated, then extensive cross-reactivity among the elements in the system can decrease the reactivity of the system as a whole and induce perfect tolerance. Using numerical and mathematical analyses, we discuss two simple models that perform optimal pathogenic detection with no autoimmunity if cells are maximally frustrated. This study strongly suggests that a principle of maximal frustration could be used to build artificial immune systems. It would be interesting to test this principle in the real adaptive immune system.

Blends of polypropylene (PP) and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), namely SBS (styrene‐butadiene‐styrene) and SEBS (styrene‐ethylene/1‐butene‐styrene) block copolymers, were prepared to evaluate the effectiveness of the TPE type as an impact modifier for PP and influence of the concentration of elastomer on the polymer properties. Polypropylene homopolymer (PP‐H) and ethylene–propylene random copolymer (PP‐R) were evaluated as the PP matrix. Results showed that TPEs had a nucleating effect that caused the PP crystallization temperature to increase, with SBS being more effective than SEBS. Microstructure characterization tests showed that in most cases PP/SEBS blends showed the smallest rubber droplets regardless of the matrix used. It was seen that SEBS is a more effective toughening agent for PP than SBS. At 0°C the Izod impact strength of the PP‐H/SEBS 30% b/w blend was twofold higher than the SBS strength, with the PP‐R/SEBS 30% b/w blend showing no break. A similar behavior on tensile properties and flexural modulus were observed in both PP/TPE blends. Yield stress and tensile strength decreased and elongation at break increased by expanding the dispersed elastomeric phase in the PP matrix. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The electrochemical reduction of α‐lapachone, β‐lapachone, β‐lapachone‐sulfonic acid and 3‐bromo‐β‐lapachone was studied by cyclic voltammetry, square‐wave and differential pulse voltammetry in mixed ethanolic (20%) aqueous buffered media (pH 4.5) using a glassy carbon electrode. The reduction showed, for the ortho‐quinones, well‐defined pH‐dependent reversible peaks corresponding to a mechanism involving the same number of electrons and protons, typical of quinones. For the para‐quinone, at pH 4.5, an irreversible pair of peaks is evident, corresponding probably to an EC system. Disproportionation of the radical together with a coupled chemical reaction after the first electron transfer seems to occur. The chemical reaction is probably a dihydropyran ring cleavage, leading to intermediates, that are oxidized in its more stable forms, one of them very similar to the one presented by β‐lapachone. The hydrogen‐bonding‐aided stabilization of the radicals generated during β‐lapachone and derivatives reduction, after electron and proton capture confers more stability to the reduced ortho‐lapachones in comparison to their reduced para‐isomers. At pH 7.0, the reduction of α‐lapachone is quasi‐reversible. In all cases, the ortho‐quinones are reduced easier than the para‐isomers. The electrochemical method enables the study of the stability of these quinones after reduction, and allows their detection and quantification which confers to this methodology an extra advantage. For the soluble sulfonic acid the detection limit is 1.7×10−6M.

Ammonia is a very important air pollutant, playing an widespread role in acid pollution chemistry. The knowledge of the deposition processes (wet and dry) is of extreme importance for both long-range transport modelling and evaluation of critical loads for specific ecosystems.
