The radiation shielding effect of introducing BaO to a B2O3-Na2O-PbO-SiO2-BaO glass system was tested at a spectrum of energies. Several parameters including the mass and linear attenuation coefficients (MAC, LAC), half value layer (HVL) and radiation protection efficiency (RPE) were calculated using Phy-X software to gain a comprehensive understanding of how the shields behave when faced with different photon energies. The investigation determined that introducing more BaO while decreasing the SiO2content overall improved the attenuation capabilities of the glasses. The LAC ratio between the S4 sample and the S1 sample remained above one at all energies, demonstrating that the S4 shield had greater attenuation capabilities, as measured by the definition of LAC. The mean free path (MFP) values of the four tested samples were also compared at 0.344 MeV, and the MFP values are equal to 2.527, 2.327, 2.155, and 2.006 cm for S1, S2, S3, and S4, respectively, an inverse relationship between MFP and BaO content in the glasses. The tenth value layer (TVL) values showed a similar trend, with the S4 sample having the smallest TVL, and the S1 glass having the greatest at both 0.122 and 0.7789 MeV. The highest RPE value occurred at the lowest tested energy, 0.122 MeV, and decreased to between 1% and 2.5% at higher energies.
