The recovery of top predators is thought to have cascading effects on vegetated ecosystems and their geomorphology1,2, but the evidence for this remains correlational and intensely debated3,4. Here we combine observational and experimental data to reveal that recolonization of sea otters in a US estuary generates a trophic cascade that facilitates coastal wetland plant biomass and suppresses the erosion of marsh edges—a process that otherwise leads to the severe loss of habitats and ecosystem services5,6. Monitoring of the Elkhorn Slough estuary over several decades suggested top-down control in the system, because the erosion of salt marsh edges has generally slowed with increasing sea otter abundance, despite the consistently increasing physical stress in the system (that is, nutrient loading, sea-level rise and tidal scour7–9). Predator-exclusion experiments in five marsh creeks revealed that sea otters suppress the abundance of burrowing crabs, a top-down effect that cascades to both increase marsh edge strength and reduce marsh erosion. Multi-creek surveys comparing marsh creeks pre- and post-sea otter colonization confirmed the presence of an interaction between the keystone sea otter, burrowing crabs and marsh creeks, demonstrating the spatial generality of predator control of ecosystem edge processes: densities of burrowing crabs and edge erosion have declined markedly in creeks that have high levels of sea otter recolonization. These results show that trophic downgrading could be a strong but underappreciated contributor to the loss of coastal wetlands, and suggest that restoring top predators can help to re-establish geomorphic stability.

Disturbances are one of the most important processes affecting natural systems, but there is a gap between simple conceptual models of disturbance and complex empirical studies. We studied the perturbation caused by headward‐eroding creeks in southeastern USA salt marshes. We measured disturbance responses (magnitude and recovery trajectory) of 19 variables. Some variables (shoot density, root biomass, snail density, soil pH, soil strength, soil temperature, elevation) declined sharply, while other variables (crab burrow density, soil organic matter, soil redox) increased sharply, in response to the burrowed and grazed conditions at the creek head. These variables recovered over subsequent years or decades. Other variables (shoot height, aboveground biomass, rhizome biomass, light interception) declined sharply in the creek head, then overshot control values before recovering. Some variables (benthic algae, soil salinity) did not appear to be disturbed by the creek head. As hypothesized, plants recovered before soils and snails. Disturbance magnitude and time to recovery were often greater directly adjacent to the new creekbank than for the same variables in a parallel transect further away from the creekbank, and in some cases variables never converged with control values, indicating a persistent state change. Reducing the dimensionality of the data set into principal component axes obscured the diverse ways in which different aspects of the system responded to and recovered from the perturbation. Our study illustrates the challenges in moving from simple conceptual models of disturbance to empirical studies in which multiple variables are likely to be affected differently and follow different recovery trajectories.

Studies evaluating the mechanisms underpinning the biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a globally prevalent group of regulated persistent organic pollutants, commonly couple chemical and stable isotope analyses to identify bioaccumulation pathways. Due to analytical costs constraining the scope, sample size, and range of congeners analyzed, and variation in methodologies preventing cross-study syntheses, how PCBs biomagnify at food web, regional, and global scales remains uncertain. To overcome these constraints, we compiled diet (stable isotopes) data and lipid-normalized concentrations of sum total PCB (PCBST), seven indicator PCB congeners, and their sum (PCB∑7). Our analyses revealed that the number of congeners analyzed, region, and class most strongly predicted PCBST, while similarly, region, class, and feeding location best predicted PCB∑7and all seven congeners. We also discovered that PCBST, PCB∑7, and the seven indicator congeners all occur in higher concentrations in freshwater than marine ecosystems but are more likely to biomagnify in the latter. Moreover, although the seven congeners vary in their propensity to biomagnify, their trophic magnification factors are all generally greater in the Atlantic than the Pacific. Thus, novel insights regarding PCB biomagnification across taxonomic, food webs, regional, and global scales can be gleaned by leveraging existing data to overcome analytical constraints.

Interest in leveraging suspension feeders, such as marine bivalves, to exert top‐down control on organic matter (OM) loading in estuaries is gaining momentum. Not only can these faunal engineers alleviate the consequences of nutrient pollution, but they may also bolster the critical blue carbon services provided by coastal ecosystems—a potential dual, mitigating effect on cultural eutrophication and climate change. Ribbed mussels, Geukensia demissa, offer a useful model for assessing faunally driven carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) processes in these systems and their relationships with faunal density. Combining bulk geochemical analyses with Bayesian stable isotope mixing model frameworks (MixSIAR), we quantified the effect of mussels on the source and amount of organic C and N deposited to the benthic floor (i.e., sedimentation), accumulated in surface sediments, and stored in aboveground Spartina alterniflorain Georgia salt marshes. Relative to areas without mussels, mussel presence shifted the source of deposited and accumulated OM to a more allochthonous makeup; amplified the amount of deposited, but not accumulated, allochthonous and autochthonous OM; and enhanced aboveground storage of C and N. Both sources of OM accumulated in sediments as well as standing stocks of C and N were highly and positively correlated with local mussel density (ind. m−2) but unrelated to neighboring mussel density (ind. ∼25 m−2) in adjacent, non‐mussel areas. This work provides new evidence that suspension feeders, through their faunal engineering activities, can interact powerfully and synergistically with primary producers to enhance the blue carbon services of marshes and counteract coastal eutrophication. Coastal ecosystems regulate carbon and nitrogen generated both inside and outside of their physical extents—important ecosystem services that can help combat the consequences of pollution and climate change. Suspension‐feeding animals living in these ecosystems, like mussels, may enhance this regulation by feeding on algae suspended in the overlying tidewater and depositing their waste to the habitat bottom. There, these deposits can accumulate in sediments or be taken up by plants. We studied how ribbed mussel presence and density influence carbon and nitrogen regulation processes in Georgia, USA salt marshes. By comparing deposits in marsh areas with and without mussel aggregations with elemental and stable isotope analyses, we found that mussels amplify the reclamation and import of marsh‐derived and marine‐derived carbon and nitrogen, respectively. We took a similar approach to sediment and found that concentrations of both sources of carbon and nitrogen increase as mussel density increases within their aggregations. Finally, we found that mussel presence and density boosted cordgrass biomass and, in turn, carbon and nitrogen storage. Mussel populations are disproportionately augmenting the role of salt marshes in regulating carbon and nitrogen pollution and should be incorporated into coastal management decisions related to these challenges. Intertidal creeks (channel width <5 m) weave through salt marshes, delivering water, nutrients, and sediments into the marsh interior and affecting spatial heterogeneity in plant and animal distributions. Despite their global prevalence, creek connectivity, and the mechanisms controlling cross‐marsh hydrodynamics, remain poorly resolved. In this study, we measured flow and total suspended solids transport in three intertidal creeks within a confined drainage basin in a Georgia, USA salt marsh. We discovered that the effective drag is 3–12 times greater than bed drag, reaching levels similar to those observed in coral reefs. Furthermore, the drag between tidal flood and ebb phases differs, indicating an asymmetric drag. Analyses of along‐channel momentum reveal that pressure gradient O(10−3−10−2)m/s2and friction O(10−3−10−2)m/s2dominate creek momentum balance. Divergence in tidal and suspended solids transport between adjacent creeks revealed contrasting tidal transport asymmetries (i.e., flood or ebb dominated) within this confined basin. We discuss how these differences may alter the eco‐geospatial evolution of salt marshes and their response to sea‐level rise. Salt marshes generate a valuable suite of ecological and economic services. Key to understanding their fate in relation to rising sea levels is understanding the eco‐physical dynamics of the creeks that weave through these marshes, as these features serve as major conduits of water, sediments, and biological material exchange. Models have been developed to explain how flow moves through creeks over one tidal cycle. However, there are limited field measurements resolving the dominant forms of drag controlling tidal fluxes through creeks, divergences in water flow and sediment transport between creeks, or creek‐creek circulations. This study applies field measurements from a Georgia salt marsh to address these knowledge gaps. We discover that adjacent creeks in a confined drainage basin are governed by form drag produced by flow interactions with the landscape and vegetation and exhibit profound heterogeneity in tidal flows and sediment transport. We highlight that this local‐scale heterogeneity likely plays a major role in altering the pattern and mechanisms by which salt marshes are responding to sea‐level rise. Quantifying and forecasting the impact of boat traffic on the health of coastal ecosystems must account for the multiscale nature of the process: from minutes (individual wakes), to days (tidal phase), weeks, and longer (tide modulation, seasonal traffic). Direct numerical simulations covering all these scales are difficult, not in the least because specifying the vessel type and navigation characteristics for every wake is practically impossible. To overcome this problem, we propose a statistical‐mechanics description of the wake field that focuses on classes of wakes, defined by a set of characteristic parameters, and their joint probability density in the characteristic‐parameter space. Here, we demonstrate the first steps of the approach using existing numerical tools and parametrizations. Because vessel type and navigation characteristics are not available, an investigation of wake parameter space is not possible at this time. Instead, we use the leading‐order Froude‐number parametrization defined by a linear model to classify the wake population observed during the field experiment. Numerical tests applying the FUNWAVE‐TVD model across all wake‐classes identified show excellent skills for weakly dispersive wakes. The model is challenged by the short waves generated by small, slow boats. However, simulations suggest that the problem is confined to the deeper water domain and linear evolution. Nonlinear wake shoaling, essential for modeling wake‐induced sediment transport and wake impact on the environment, is described well. A significant challenge to developing methodologies for modeling and mitigating the threat posed by boat traffic to coastal ecosystems health is its multiple‐scale character. The characteristic time of individual boat wake is in the order of minutes; sediment transport effects are modulated in tide time scales (days) and accumulated over seasons and years (traffic is seasonal). This process cannot be described boat by boat, no matter how accurately; beside the considerable effort required, in practice, it is impossible to specify the exact types and navigation characteristics for every boat comprising the traffic at any given time. Here, we propose an alternative statistical‐mechanics approach: the boat traffic is described by the distributions of the boat population in some characteristic parameter space (e.g., length, draft, width, speed, etc). In this study, we begin to assemble the elements of such a statistical description. We study the distribution of the boat‐wake population in the field using observations collected on the Florida Intracoastal Waterway. We test the applicability of a Boussinesq model (FUNWAVE‐TVD). The model performs well across most of the population range; it is challenged by wakes generated by small, slow boats, but reproduces well processes essential for erosion and sediment transport.
