Abstract

Obtaining a burning plasma is a critical step towards self-sustaining fusion energy1. A burning plasma is one in which the fusion reactions themselves are the primary source of heating in the plasma, which is necessary to sustain and propagate the burn, enabling high energy gain. After decades of fusion research, here we achieve a burning-plasma state in the laboratory. These experiments were conducted at the US National Ignition Facility, a laser facility delivering up to 1.9 megajoules of energy in pulses with peak powers up to 500 terawatts. We use the lasers to generate X-rays in a radiation cavity to indirectly drive a fuel-containing capsule via the X-ray ablation pressure, which results in the implosion process compressing and heating the fuel via mechanical work. The burning-plasma state was created using a strategy to increase the spatial scale of the capsule2,3through two different implosion concepts4–7. These experiments show fusion self-heating in excess of the mechanical work injected into the implosions, satisfying several burning-plasma metrics3,8. Additionally, we describe a subset of experiments that appear to have crossed the static self-heating boundary, where fusion heating surpasses the energy losses from radiation and conduction. These results provide an opportunity to study α-particle-dominated plasmas and burning-plasma physics in the laboratory.

Abstract

Physically realized electron gas systems usually reside in either the quantum non-degenerate or fully degenerate limit, where the average de Broglie wavelength of the thermal electrons becomes comparable with the interparticle distance between electrons. A few systems, such as young brown dwarfs and the cold dense fuels created in imploded cryogenic capsules at the National Ignition Facility, lie between these two limits and are partially degenerate. The National Ignition Facility has the unique capability of varying the electron quantum degeneracy by adjusting the laser drive used to implode the capsules. This allows experimental studies of the effects of the degeneracy level on plasma transport properties. By measuring rare nuclear reactions in these cold dense fuels, we show that the electron stopping power, which is the rate of energy loss per unit distance travelled by a charged particle, changes with increasing electron density. We observe a quantum-induced shift in the peak of the stopping power using diagnostics that measure above and below this peak. The observed changes in the stopping power are shown to be unique to the transition region between non-degenerate and degenerate plasmas. Our results support the screening models applied to partially degenerate astrophysical systems such as young brown dwarfs.

Abstract

AbstractExperiments and analysis in the 2 years since the 2015 Target Fabrication Meeting have resulted in further evolution of the requirements for high-performance layered implosions. This paper is a status update on the experimental program and supporting modeling, with emphasis on the implications for fabrication requirements. Previous work on the capsule support has continued, with various other support options being explored in experiments and modeling. Work also continues on ablator composition nonuniformities, with important new results from CH experiments on Omega, and the first three-dimensional X-ray transmission measurements of Be capsules on the National Ignition Facility. Work on hohlraums continues to include near-vacuum hohlraums and U hohlraums without a gold lining. Overall, the understanding that has been achieved, along with the progress in fabrication technology, represents good continuing progress toward the goal of fusion in the laboratory.

Abstract

A thin-glass-shell, D 3 He-filled exploding-pusher inertial confinement fusion implosion at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been demonstrated as a proton source that serves as a promising first step toward development of a monoenergetic proton, alpha, and triton backlighting platform at the NIF. Among the key measurements, the D 3 He-proton emission on this experiment (shot N121128) has been well-characterized spectrally, temporally, and in terms of emission isotropy, revealing a highly monoenergetic ( Δ E / E ∼ 4 % ) and isotropic source (~3% proton fluence variation and ~0.5% proton energy variation). On a similar shot (N130129, with D 2 fill), the DD-proton spectrum has been obtained as well, illustrating that monoenergetic protons of multiple energies may be utilized in a single experiment. These results, and experiments on OMEGA, point toward future steps in the development of a precision, monoenergetic proton, alpha, and triton source that can readily be implemented at the NIF for backlighting a broad range of high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments in which fields and flows are manifest, and also utilized for studies of stopping power in warm dense matter and in classical plasmas. Abstract

Alpha-particle self-heating, the process of deuterium–tritium fusion reaction products depositing their kinetic energy locally within a fusion reaction region and thus increasing the temperature in the reacting region, is essential for achieving ignition in a fusion system. Here, we report new inertial confinement fusion experiments where the alpha-particle heating of the plasma is dominant with the fusion yield produced exceeding the fusion yield from the work done on the fuel (pressure times volume change) by a factor of two or more. These experiments have achieved the highest yield (26 ± 0.5 kJ) and stagnation pressures (≍220 ± 40 Gbar) of any facility-based inertial confinement fusion experiments, although they are still short of the pressures required for ignition on the National Ignition Facility (∼300–400 Gbar). These experiments put us in a new part of parameter space that has not been extensively studied so far because it lies between the no-alpha-particle-deposition regime and ignition.

Abstract

This paper presents an exploration of potential mitigation methods for the gas fuel fill tube in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) implosions at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), and the impact of hydrodynamic growth seeded from other target imperfections using a specialized low convergence implosion experiment. Enhanced x-ray self- emission of this experiment design allows the impact of hydrodynamic growth through the deceleration phase of the implosion to be examined. Experiments are presented comparing the perturbation visible during the implosion deceleration that are seeded by the fill tube, through varying the initial geometry in otherwise similar implosions. We further extend the experiment to explore the impact of isolated high atomic number 'dots' of 5 and 20 µm diameter. These isolated dots are compared in two different 'High Density Carbon' ablator designs in a gold hohlraum. The experiment series finds a correlation to number of high frequency self-emission features observed in deceleration and degradation in total Deuterium-Deuterium neutron yield. 8. Direct observation of density gradients in ICF capsule implosions via streaked Refraction Enhanced Radiography (RER).

Abstract

We have performed refraction enhanced radiography (RER) measurements of indirect drive layered high density carbon capsule implosions relevant for inertial confinement fusion. Streaked RER data using a 5 µm wide imaging slit, backlit by a 7.8 keV Ni He-α laser driven x-ray source, shows features due to inflight density gradients in the ablator and fuel ice that are not visible in absorption only radiographs. To avoid motional blurring at smaller in-flight radii, we concentrate our probe to the main compression and N+1 shock phases. During the main compression phase, both simulations and data show fringes consistent with steep density gradients. During the later N+1 shock phase we see loss of fringes and hence infer less fuel compression than simulated, that may be caused by ice-ablator mix. Quantitative analysis shows that at the ablation front during the main compression phase, the simulated density differential agrees with the data, but the inferred scale length is 50% longer than simulated. During the N+1 shock phase, the data shows 2x higher ablation front density than simulated for similar scale lengths that may be affected by data cross talk with the reduced fuel compression at the ice-ablator interface.
