Municipal wastewaters contain diverse pharmaceutical products that may present long-term risks to receiving water bodies and ecosystems. We present an electrochemical advanced oxidation process called the Advanced Oxidation System (AOS) to decontaminate municipal wastewater. Results from a pilot-scale reactor at the Vaudreuil-Dorion municipal wastewater treatment facility revealed that the AOS technology, operating in continuous operation mode at a flowrate of 18.9 L min−1, eliminated 79% to 98% of 9 prevalent pharmaceutical products (PPs) and promoted a mineralization rate of 49 ± 2%. We conducted a cost analysis to demonstrate this technology is an effective and low-cost tertiary treatment to remove PPs from municipal wastewater. Using analogous AOS reactors at a laboratory scale, we investigated a probable mechanism, whereby both anodic and cathodic reactions simultaneously produce reactive oxygen species such as OH and H2O2in the reactor to oxidize pharmaceutical products in wastewater.

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited disease that results from a defect in the phagocytic cells of the immune system. It is caused by defects in one of the major subunits of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase complex. The clinical presentations of CGD patients are heterogeneous.

When introduced as pairs into irradiated, sterile soils, aPseudomonas fluorescens strain prevented optimal colonization by aP. putida strain. The addition ofP. putida to sterile soil already populated byP. fluorescens impeded growth ofP. putida in that soil. However, addingP. fluorescens to soil populated withR. putida did not prevent growth ofP. fluorescens and caused a decrease in the titer ofP. putida. This “preemptive colonization/exclusion” phenomenon was also observed between two isogenic strains. The degree of exclusion depended on the amount of time between the inoculation of the two strains and which organism was introduced first. These results suggest competition for similar “niches” in soils and a hierarchy of fitness among pseudomonads sharing a soil environment. Autoclaving of the soil removed the competitive colonization betweenPseudomonas spp. observed in irradiated soils. The competitive colonization of irradiated soils by these twoPseudomonas sp. was reflected in their relative survival when introduced into nonsterile soil.

Abstract: A new generation technique is elaborated in the case of static spherically symmetric distribution of charged fluid. The above technique deals only with a charged perfect fluid verifying a barytropic equation of state, i.e.,P=(γ−1)ρ. Many new exact solutions have then been generated from those of Pant and Sah, Banerjee and Santos, Humi and Mansour. Their physical properties are then studied in some detail.

L’interrogatoire aidé par des questionnaires spécifique (QV-Dyspnée) permet de distinguer assez facilement les patients BPCO excessivement inactifs (EI) de ceux qui maintiennent une activité physique suffisante. Entre ces deux situations le doute subsiste ou n’est pas évoqué, alors que les études s’accordent pour détecter, grâce aux mesures d’accéléromètrie, plus de 40 % de patients inactifs dans cette sous population indépendamment de la sévérité de l’obstruction bronchique. Partant de l’hypothèse que l’EI pouvait impacter, comme cause ou conséquence, de multiples variables recueillies en consultation de routine, nous avons vérifié si le comportement EI pouvait être prédit individuellement à partir de ces variables excluant de fait toutes les mesures d’exercice réalisées au-delà du temps de la consultation.
