Purpose: This study examines the moderating role of information sharing on the effect of lead-time management on the performance of firms in the Zimbabwean motor industry. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected using Likert-based structured questionnaires from a sample of 105 employees in Zimbabwe. In addition, Pearson Correlation, Linear Regression and Moderation Regression analysis were employed to test the relationship between study variables. Findings: The study found that fixed lead time, preprocessing lead time, processing lead time and postprocessing lead time significantly influence the performance of firms in the motor industry. The results also demonstrate that information sharing moderates the effect of lead-time management on firm performance in the motor industry. Practical implications: Firms in the motor industry should establish long-term relationships with their suppliers and implement effective communication channels for timely and frequent information exchange regarding production schedules, inventory levels, quality standards and potential disruptions. Originality/value: The current study aims to contribute to the scientific discourse on lead-time management, information sharing and performance in the motor industry. Furthermore, it extends knowledge on the performance of the motor industry in the African region.

Mitochondria have crucial roles in cellular energetics, metabolism, signalling and quality control1–4. They contain around 1,000 different proteins that often assemble into complexes and supercomplexes such as respiratory complexes and preprotein translocases1,3–7. The composition of the mitochondrial proteome has been characterized1,3,5,6; however, the organization of mitochondrial proteins into stable and dynamic assemblies is poorly understood for major parts of the proteome1,4,7. Here we report quantitative mapping of mitochondrial protein assemblies using high-resolution complexome profiling of more than 90% of the yeast mitochondrial proteome, termed MitCOM. An analysis of the MitCOM dataset resolves >5,200 protein peaks with an average of six peaks per protein and demonstrates a notable complexity of mitochondrial protein assemblies with distinct appearance for respiration, metabolism, biogenesis, dynamics, regulation and redox processes. We detect interactors of the mitochondrial receptor for cytosolic ribosomes, of prohibitin scaffolds and of respiratory complexes. The identification of quality-control factors operating at the mitochondrial protein entry gate reveals pathways for preprotein ubiquitylation, deubiquitylation and degradation. Interactions between the peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase Pth2 and the entry gate led to the elucidation of a constitutive pathway for the removal of preproteins. The MitCOM dataset—which is accessible through an interactive profile viewer—is a comprehensive resource for the identification, organization and interaction of mitochondrial machineries and pathways.

The majority of mitochondrial precursor proteins are imported through the Tom40 β-barrel channel of the translocase of the outer membrane (TOM). The sorting and assembly machinery (SAM) is essential for β-barrel membrane protein insertion into the outer membrane and thus required for the assembly of the TOM complex. Here, we demonstrate that the α-helical outer membrane protein Mco6 co-assembles with the mitochondrial distribution and morphology protein Mdm10 as part of the SAM machinery. MCO6and MDM10display a negative genetic interaction, and a mco6-mdm10yeast double mutant displays reduced levels of the TOM complex. Cells lacking Mco6 affect the levels of Mdm10 and show assembly defects of the TOM complex. Thus, this work uncovers a role of the SAMMco6complex for the biogenesis of the mitochondrial outer membrane.

Manipulative-based instructional sequences have proven to be successful with students with disabilities. However, instruction must not only support the acquisition of conceptual and procedural knowledge but also build on students’ strengths. This article describes how teachers can use manipulative-based instructional sequences to support the fractional understanding of students who are diagnosed with mathematical learning disabilities. We begin by describing common misconceptions that may affect students’ abilities to reason with and calculate fractions. We then explain how teachers can use a concrete-semi-concrete representational-abstract (CRA) model to plan and implement lessons that maximize learning and minimize frustration. Readers are also provided with detailed descriptions of how teachers can assess fraction knowledge, reinforce conceptual understanding, and promote procedural fluency.

Measuring the indirect effects on team performance from teammate interactions, or team synergy, has proven to be an elusive concept in sports analytics. In order to shed further light on this topic, we apply advanced statistical techniques designed to capture player complementarities, or “network” relationships, between teammates on Major League Baseball teams. Using wins-above-replacement metrics (WAR) over the 1998-2016 seasons and spatial factor models embodying the strength of teammates’ on-the-field interactions, we show that roughly 40 percent of the unexplained variation in team performance by WARcan be explained by team synergy. By building a set of novel individual player metrics which control for a player’s effect on his teammates, we are then able to develop some “rules-of-thumb” for team synergy that can be used to guide roster construction.

Long-term sustainability of successful improvement initiatives remains a pragmatic challenge with limited literature guidance. A chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) care bundle was developed and implemented to mitigate care-delivery failures and unmet patient needs at University of Cincinnati Medical Center that led to a 35% reduction in 30-day all-cause readmissions. Here, two-year outcomes and the method of achieving sustainability are presented.

Abstract:In response to the widespread loss of Lakota language and culture on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Red Cloud Indian School developed the first comprehensive K-12 curriculum for learning Lakota as a second language. Created in collaboration with the American Indian Studies Research Institute (AISRI) at Indiana University, the Lakota Language Project (LLP) was first implemented during the 2008–2009 academic year and completed in 2014–2015. A new grant allowed the school to develop literary materials in Lakota and extend the use of Lakota throughout the school community. An evaluation of the LLP, utilizing a mixed methods design, began in the fall of 2010 and ended in summer of 2018. Key findings from the evaluation are that the LLP enhanced students’ interest in learning about Lakota history, culture, and spiritual practices; facilitated an increase in students’ proficiency in learning the language; and positively impacted both academic engagement and good behavior.

Abnormal or aggregated proteins have a strong cytotoxic potential and are causative for human disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. If not restored by molecular chaperones, abnormal proteins are typically degraded by proteasomes or eliminated by selective autophagy. The discovery that both pathways are initiated by substrate ubiquitylation but utilize different ubiquitin receptors incited a debate over how pathway choice is achieved. Here, we demonstrate in yeast that pathway choice is made after substrate ubiquitylation by competing ubiquitin receptors harbouring either proteasome- or autophagy-related protein 8 (Atg8/LC3)-binding modules. Proteasome pathway receptors bind ubiquitin moieties more efficiently, but autophagy receptors gain the upper hand following substrate aggregation and receptor bundling. Indeed, by using sets of modular artificial receptors harbouring identical ubiquitin-binding modules we found that proteasome/autophagy pathway choice is independent of the ubiquitin-binding properties of the receptors but largely determined by their oligomerization potentials. Our work thus suggests that proteasomal degradation and selective autophagy are two branches of an adaptive protein quality control pathway, which uses substrate ubiquitylation as a shared degradation signal.

Tensioactive agents may alter dentinal wettability allowingincreased sealer penetration into dentinal tubules. This may improve the apical seal and better entomb remaining bacteria.The purpose of this study was to determine if a final rinse of alcohol or sodium hypochlorite increased sealer coverage of root canal. The samplcs were randomly divided into four groups according to the method of sealer placement and final irrigant used. Group 1 file and 95% ethanol, group 2 file and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, group 3 lentulospiral and 95% ethanol, group 4 lentulospiral and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. The samples were obturated with AH26 as sealer mixed with carbon black powder and gutta percha All samplcs were decalcitied with 5% nitric acid and dehydrated in alcohol, followed by clearing in methyl salicylate. The cleared samples were measured under dissecting microscopefor sealer penetration with the help of millimeter scale. Although a final rinse of alcohol did not increase sealer coverage, a high variability was found in the middle and apical third portions ofthe root canals.

We describe the new command margte, which computes marginal and average treatment effects for a model with a binary treatment and a continuous outcome given selection on unobservables and returns. Marginal treatment effects differ from average treatment effects in instances where the impact of treatment varies within a population in correlation with unobserved characteristics. Both parametric and semiparametric estimation methods can be used with margte, and we provide evidence from a Monte Carlo simulation for when each is preferable.

Phenotypic screening seeks to identify substances that modulate phenotypes in a desired manner with the aim of progressing first-in-class agents. Successful campaigns require physiological relevance, robust screening, and an ability to deconvolute perturbed pathways. High-content analysis (HCA) is increasingly used in cell biology and offers one approach to prosecution of phenotypic screens, but challenges exist in exploitation where data generated are high volume and complex. We combine development of an organotypic model with novel HCA tools to map phenotypic responses to pharmacological perturbations. We describe implementation for angiogenesis, a process that has long been a focus for therapeutic intervention but has lacked robust models that recapitulate more completely mechanisms involved. The study used human primary endothelial cells in co-culture with stromal fibroblasts to model multiple aspects of angiogenic signaling: cell interactions, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Multiple quantitative descriptors were derived from automated microscopy using custom-designed algorithms. Data were extracted using a bespoke informatics platform that integrates processing, statistics, and feature display into a streamlined workflow for building and interrogating fingerprints. Ninety compounds were characterized, defining mode of action by phenotype. Our approach for assessing phenotypic outcomes in complex assay models is robust and capable of supporting a range of phenotypic screens at scale.

Unicystic ameloblastoma, a variant of solid or multicystic ameloblastoma is commonly reported to occur in third decade and encountered in the posterior mandible with a biologically low-grade course and with limited récurrence potential. Clinically, it frequently manifests as a painless swelling, which can be accompanied by facial deformity, malocclusion and paresthesia of the affected area.Histologically, the minimum criterion for diagnosing a lesion as unicystic ameloblastoma is the demonstration of a single cystic sac lined by odontogenic(ameloblastomatous) epithelium often seen only in focal areas whereas radiographically they represent a unilocular radiolucency. This report presents a case of 28 year old male patient with bilateral occurrence of unicystic ameloblastoma.

Human Plants, Human Harvest: The Hidden History of California Eugenics is the first-ever exhibition on the history of eugenics in California. The disappearance of this history for half a century, and the consequent absence of a “collective memory,” were the primary factors determining the exhibit's structure and content. Responses to the exhibit confirmed that most visitors “never knew” about this history. The exhibit is described in some detail, with selected imagery from the exhibit reproduced. After the initial exhibition, responses of other museums and foundation officials revealed a continuing resistance to this history being publicly displayed, though the sources of resistance varied.
