The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), to be built over the next five years, will be the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. This large science and technology project will cost ~RIOOm and is jointly funded by the South African Government and an international consortium. This paper describes the telescope and the instrument used to position fibre optics at the focus. The latter is used as an example of the technologies required to accomplish this project and includes fibre optics, positioning and tilting mechanisms which involve precision motion to l0µm accuracy.
