Background: Adolescents affected by childhood cancer experience various degrees of psychosocial distress, social isolation, and social support throughout the treatment process. Objective: To create and implement an evidence-based practice project consisting of a pilot half-day camp program to improve social support and connectedness for adolescents affected by childhood cancer. Methods: A pilot half-day camp program was implemented. Twenty adolescent patients, survivors, and siblings (ages 13–18 years) participated in the program. Participants provided basic demographic information and completed pretest, immediate posttest, and 4-week posttest surveys to assess their levels of social support and camp connectedness. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and two-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: All measures of social support in adolescent participants affected by childhood cancer trended upward following the conclusion of the program, then trended downward over time, with overall social support and family social support significantly decreasing over time postintervention. Camp connectedness was not significantly impacted by the program. Conclusions: Social support decreases as participants are further out from attending a half-day camp program. This pilot program demonstrated the feasibility of a short-term, local, cost-effective camp program that is scalable to larger groups. Implications for Nursing: Providers should refer adolescents affected by childhood cancer to camp programs for social support. Camping – a growing niche in the tourism industry – allows participants to have a liminal experience. Using qualitative methods, we examine camp participants' perspective through the lens of liminal theory. The data were obtained through participant observation and interviews with 27 campers. Camp participants' liminal experiences are grouped into three dimensions: (1) learning in liminal spaces; (2) increased tolerance in liminal spaces and, (3) the effects of liminal spaces on eudaimonic happiness. Learning and tolerance in the camping experience has the potential to foster happiness, even after the participants return home. These findings from the Turkish experience contribute to a growing literature on liminality in camps and tourism more broadly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impacts of wildfire are widely felt across the United States and expected to increase in coming years. However, little is known about the long-term impacts of wildfire on recreation. We evaluate the impact of wildfire on reservations to US Forest Service (USFS) campgrounds and find that wildfires decrease camping reservations up to 6 years after a fire occurs. The impacts vary across USFS regions, and our analysis reveals the important role of forest cover in determining the magnitude and duration of impacts. Our results imply that wildfires reduce benefits to campers, which can translate into less spending in nearby communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An update is provided on Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), such as the levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) and contraceptive implants, offer benefits beyond pregnancy prevention, including reducing or stopping menstrual bleeding, cramping, and pain, with the LNG-IUD being particularly effective and providing additional advantages such as reducing cancer risks and treating endometriosis.

Camps provide a substantial opportunity for youth to develop important life skills. Identifying and training staff on critical competencies are essential to achieving the desired outcomes for camp participants. The purpose of this study was to determine the most critical competencies of the 4-H residential camp staff for achieving high staff performance. The modified Delphi technique was used to achieve study objectives. The Delphi panel of this study consisted of 23 4-H camping experts from across the United States. This three-round Delphi study led to identify 15 critical competencies that will be useful in standardizing 4-H camp staff training programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through better recruitment of Children's representatives working in mini-clubs, outdoor hospitality businesses have a further opportunity to both enhance the well-being of children while also addressing a major societal issue such as sustainability. The findings of the research suggest that the content of job advert for children's representatives should be recalibrating with a focus on philosophy of the organisation (responsible management education), which will then inform the type of knowledge wished to be conveyed (sustainability), how (case method), and the profile (qualifications, experience, personality, etc) of the staff needed. The findings of the research also highlight the fact that job crafting, which used to be solely a coping strategy used by staff, is also a coping strategy used by managers in their recruitment strategy. Background: It is known that the circadian rhythm phase in adults can be advanced in a natural light-dark cycle without electrical lighting. However, the effect of advanced sleep-wake timing according to the natural light-dark cycle on children's circadian phase is unclear. We investigated the effects of approximately 2 weeks of camping life with little access to artificial lighting on children's circadian phases. We also conducted an exploratory examination on the effects of wake time according to natural sunrise time on the manner of the advance of their circadian phases. Methods: Twenty-one healthy children (mean ± SD age, 10.6 ± 1.4 years) participated in a camping program with wake time (4:00) being earlier than sunrise time (EW condition), and 21 healthy children (10.4 ± 1.1 years) participated in a camping program with wake time (5:00) being almost matched to sunrise time (SW condition). Salivary dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) before the camping program and that after approximately 2 weeks of camping were compared. Results: DLMO was advanced by approximately 2 h after the camping program compared with the circadian phase in daily life in both conditions. In addition, the advances in DLMO were significantly correlated with mid-sleep points before the camp in both conditions (EW: r = 0.72, p < 0.01, SW: r = 0.70, p < 0.01). These correlations mean that the phase advance was greater for the children with delayed sleep habits in daily life. Furthermore, in the EW condition, mean DLMO after the camp (18:09 ± 0:33 h) was earlier than natural sunset time and there was no significant decrease in interindividual variability in DLMO. On the other hand, in the SW condition, mean DLMO after the camp (18:43 ± 0:20 h) matched natural sunset time and interindividual variability in DLMO was significantly lower than that before the camp. Conclusions: Camping with advanced sleep and wake timing under natural sunlight advances children's circadian phases. However, DLMO earlier than sunset in an early waking condition may lead to large interindividual variability in the circadian rhythm phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Campgrounds are an essential part of the camping experience due to the attractions and facilities they offer to campers. The factors that motivate campers to travel have increasingly become more complex making it vital to take camper expectations into account for effective planning of campgrounds. The present study aimed to determine the trailer park amenities based on expert opinion. The paper systematically applied the Fuzzy Pivot Pairwise RElative Criteria Importance Assessment (Fuzzy PIPRECIA) Method in the selection of the trailer park criteria. Four main criteria and 20 sub-criteria were considered. In the findings the amenities were structured as follows: primarily, 'location,' followed by 'necessities' and 'campground attributes' and finally 'facilities and camping tools.' The purpose of this study is to lay the foundations for measuring customer performance in the outdoor hospitality sector and encourage relevant internal benchmarking through an adapted balanced scorecard. The literature on balanced scorecard and customer performance is classified by identifying their antecedents in the context of outdoor hospitality management. Using an inductive approach, the study employs a lexicometric analysis to identify the main categories of customer satisfaction in a well-known European camping chain. In addition, this research proposes a methodological building block adapted for camping business that integrates multiple classes and attributes into the customer perspective of the BSC model addressing the current over-simplification of this element of the model. This paper examines the genealogy of Vietnamese refugees based at a transit camp in Singapore between 1975 and 1996. Created by UNHCR with permission of the Singapore government, Hawkins Road Camp hosted Vietnamese refugees with confirmed destinations in their transit. The transit camp was found to be heterotopian, oscillating between the state's economic pragmatism and humanitarianism. Its heterotopian traits can be traced to its varying (in)visibility throughout its operation from physical demolition to eventual cyber-presence. The heterotopian space of the camp is found to be constructed by two epistemes or politics of truth – the first functioning when the transit camp was in operation and the second operating when the camp was decommissioned and demolished. The first episteme created discursive practices which directed measures at reluctant acceptance and discreet (unpublicised) care of refugees. This is evident from the low media presence, obscure camp location and invisibility not being marked on key landuse maps at the time. The second episteme enacts discursive practices which shape the textual and tangible marginalisations and erasures of refugee presence and history. It is matched and resisted by online commemoration of the transit camp by a stakeholder community concerned with the histories of the transit camp. In doing so, we illuminate the omission of humanitarian ideals for discourses focused on extreme resource vulnerability and economic pragmatism by the Singapore state and provide a geographical critique of such refugee governance. We add to the current literature on the politics and landscapes of remembering and forgetting by examining the subject positions of peoples entwined in these power-relations and highlight the need to attend to the shifts in these subject positions. How can a jungle be domestic, and a camp servant be a domestic servant? This article argues for a reconceptualisation of historical forests and jungles of India: spaces usually conceived of as wild and hostile in the popular imagination were also a domestic realm. Pushing the boundaries of traditional conceptualisations of both domestic and wild, I examine the lives of late nineteenth to early twentieth-century camp servants and colonial officers living and working in the central Indian hinterland. Building on my work on populations I have referred to as 'subaltern shikaris', typically 'tribal' employees in British big game hunting expeditions, and drawing from a vast literature left behind by European forest officers and big game hunters in central India, this article shows how servants and servitude were vital to establishing that jungle camps could indeed be quite domestic.
