Preserving our planet's delicate balance is not merely a choice but a responsibility we owe to future generations, ensuring equitable, and sustainable world. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations (UN) member states in 2015, offers a collective vision for global peace and prosperity. Central to this agenda are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which call for unified action from all nations, irrespective of their developmental status, under a global partnership. This paper examines the SDGs' framework and its applicability to clinical nutrition (CN). We provide a comprehensive narrative review relating to the integration of SDGs in CN practices. Whilst recognising the importance of the SDG framework we elected to focus specifically upon the environmental aspects of CN care. The analysis revealed that the SDGs provide a robust framework for promoting sustainability in clinical nutrition. Key findings highlight the interconnection between health improvement and other SDGs, such as poverty reduction and climate action. Effective CN practices contribute to broader sustainable development by ensuring better health outcomes, which in turn support economic growth and reduce inequalities. Additionally, strategies in CN that focus on reducing waste and improving resource efficiency align with environmental sustainability goals. The 17 SDGs offer a comprehensive guide for advancing sustainability across various fields, including clinical nutrition. By adopting these goals, healthcare providers can implement holistic strategies that not only improve health outcomes but also support broader efforts to achieve global sustainability. An electrochemical approach was used to synthesise nickel iron sulphide (NiFeS) materials in this work. The prepared NiFeS underwent a thorough investigation, which included analyses of its optical, electrical, structural, morphological, elemental, and functional group properties. Cubic crystal formations with prominent peaks were visible from the structural pattern. Nanoflakes and pebbles were visible, and their elements were determined through elemental dispersive X-ray diffractometer (EDX) spectrum. The film's crystallinity increased after incorporating carbon ions and its optical properties improved, with energy band gap values ranging from 1.50 eV to 1.15 eV as the peaks became more distinct. The materials produced could be utilised in the production of solar cells and optoelectronic devices. The electrical conductivity diminishes with increasing thickness. Carbon ion radiation increases carrier concentration, which increases electrical conductivity. NiFeS was irradiated using 500 keV carbon C++ ions beam irradiation NiFeS without irradiation has a bandgap of 1.50 eV, while the irradiated material had bandgaps between 1.35-1.15 eV. • Anomalous tensile twinning and subsequent complete detwinning were observed, for the first time, using in-situ EBSD during tensile loading in a friction stir processed model carbon fiber-reinforced Mg composite. • This twinning-detwinning phenomenon is shown to result from the dynamic changing of local stress/strain state during tensile, which in turn accommodates strain incompatibility between the reinforced phase and matrix at different stages. This paper discusses the temperature dependence of the mechanical properties of multicomponent alloys Co20Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20 (Cantor alloy), Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1, and Co17Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С3 under uniaxial static tension in the temperature range from 77 to 473 K. It is shown that all the alloys acquire an fcc crystal structure after thermomechanical treatment, but the alloy with 3 at % carbon exhibits large incoherent chromium carbides unlike single-phase Co20Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20 and Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1 alloys. Doping with carbon causes solid solution strengthening of the austenitic phase as well as dispersion hardening and moreover promotes grain refinement in the Cantor alloy. Solid solution strengthening contributes to an increase in the athermal and thermal stress components of σ0.2, leading to higher yield stress values and stronger temperature dependences σ0.2(T) in Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1 and Co17Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С3 alloys than in the Cantor alloy. The results of X-ray diffraction and microscopic analysis indicate that, despite the difference in the total concentrations of interstitial atoms in Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1 and Co17Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С3 alloys, the concentrations of carbon dissolved in the crystal lattice of the austenitic phase are close. However, the higher strength properties of Co17Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С3 compared to Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1 are determined primarily by grain boundary strengthening and, to a lesser extent, by dispersion hardening. Both factors such as lowering the deformation temperature and doping with carbon contribute to an increase in the deforming stresses of the Cantor alloy. It is shown that carbon doping affects the staged plastic flow of the Cantor alloy: the tensile curves of Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1 carbon alloy exhibit a well-defined stage of microplastic deformation, and the flow curves of Co17Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С3 alloy have a parabolic shape at the initial stages of plastic flow, which is typical of the deformation of alloys with large incoherent particles. The elongation to failure of Co20Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20 and Co19Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С1 alloys increases linearly with decreasing deformation temperature, i.e. the mechanical properties of single-phase alloys are improved in the region of low test temperatures. For Co17Cr20Fe20Mn20Ni20С3 alloy, an increase in strength properties during low-temperature deformation is accompanied by a decrease in elongation, and the alloy becomes brittle from the macromechanical viewpoint. Gene delivery is a complex process with several challenges when attempting to incorporate genetic material efficiently and safely into target cells. Some of the key challenges include not only efficient cellular uptake and endosomal escape to ensure that the genetic material can exert its effect but also minimizing the toxicity of the delivery system, which is vital for safe gene delivery. Of importance, if gene delivery systems are intended for biomedical applications or clinical use, they must be scalable and easy and affordable to manufacture to meet the demand. Here, we show an efficient gene delivery method using a combination of carbon dots coated by PEI through electrostatic binding to easily generate cationic carbon dots. We show a biofunctional approach to generate optimal cationic carbon dots (CCDs) that can be scaled up to meet specific transfection demands. CCDs improve cell viability and increase transfection efficiency four times over the standard of PEI polyplexes. Generated CCDs enabled the challenging transfection protocol to produce retroviral vectors via cell cotransfection of three different plasmids into packing cells, showing not only high efficiency but also functionality of the gene delivery, tested as the capacity to produce infective retroviral particles. Fire suppression and past selective logging of large trees have fundamentally changed frequent-fire-adapted forests in California. The culmination of these changes produced forests that are vulnerable to catastrophic change by wildfire, drought, and bark beetles, with climate change exacerbating this vulnerability. Management options available to address this problem include mechanical treatments (Mech), prescribed fire (Fire), or combinations of these treatments (Mech + Fire). We quantify changes in forest structure and composition, fuel accumulation, modeled fire behavior, intertree competition, and economics from a 20-year forest restoration study in the northern Sierra Nevada. All three active treatments (Fire, Mech, Mech + Fire) produced forest conditions that were much more resistant to wildfire than the untreated control. The treatments that included prescribed fire (Fire, Mech + Fire) produced the lowest surface and duff fuel loads and the lowest modeled wildfire hazards. Mech produced low fire hazards beginning 7 years after the initial treatment and Mech + Fire had lower tree growth than controls. The only treatment that produced intertree competition somewhat similar to historical California mixed-conifer forests was Mech + Fire, indicating that stands under this treatment would likely be more resilient to enhanced forest stressors. While Fire reduced modeled wildfire hazard and reintroduced a fundamental ecosystem process, it was done at a net cost to the landowner. Using Mech that included mastication and restoration thinning resulted in positive revenues and was also relatively strong as an investment in reducing modeled wildfire hazard. The Mech + Fire treatment represents a compromise between the desire to sustain financial feasibility and the desire to reintroduce fire. One key component to long-term forest conservation will be continued treatments to maintain or improve the conditions from forest restoration. Many Indigenous people speak of "active stewardship" as one of the key principles in land management and this aligns well with the need for increased restoration in western US forests. If we do not use the knowledge from 20+ years of forest research and the much longer tradition of Indigenous cultural practices and knowledge, frequent-fire forests will continue to be degraded and lost. Carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has unique radiobiological properties that cause increased radiobiological effect and tumour control, especially with hypoxic tissues. This critical review aimed to evaluate clinical response to CIRT across all published tumour sites to establish if there is a clinical need for a CIRT centre in the UK. A critical review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Literature searching was undertaken in November 2022 within the PubMed, Science Direct, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases using the term 'carbon ion radiotherapy' in the title, abstract or author keywords. After critical appraisal, data was extracted from 78 primary study papers. Strong evidence supported use of CIRT for chondrosarcoma, chordoma, nasopharyngeal, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), oral cavity, prostate, rectal and salivary gland tumours. Further research is needed to strengthen the evidence base for some other tumour types. The UK's incidence and mortality rates suggest a clinical need for CIRT for chondrosarcoma, chordoma, NSCLC, oral cavity, prostate, and rectal tumours. There is a need to improve survivorship amongst pancreatic, liver, and oesophageal cancer patients. Data published relating to CIRT for these tumours is promising but of lower quality and more research is needed in these areas. The clinical response to CIRT for certain tumours suggests the need for a carbon-ion centre in the UK. Demand for further research [phase III trials] has been identified, giving the UK opportunity to establish a research centre, with opportunity to treat, contributing to world-renowned research whilst improving patient outcomes. Tropical peatlands in Indonesia have attracted international and domestic attention and concern in recent decades. Indonesian peatlands provide globally significant climate regulation and biodiversity provisioning ecosystem services and are central to the lives of local communities, yet they have undergone significant degradation via drainage and fire. There is a growing call for scientific knowledge of the social, environmental and practice dimensions of peatland restoration in Indonesia. This Special Volume of Mires and Peat is a collaborative effort by an Indonesian and Australian team of biophysical and social scientists to showcase primary research and systematic reviews that engage with the complexity of tropical peatland fire, conservation and restoration in Indonesia. We explore lives above ground (people and plants) and below ground (microbes, plants and the dynamic peat itself) and identify the following four themes that cut across the individual articles: 1) Livelihoods and land use; 2) Community engagement; 3) Bringing together multiple knowledges; and 4) Carbon; and draw out globally applicable lessons. We suggest that these themes highlight future directions for research which engage with the complexity of tropical peatland restoration in Indonesia, while centring the voices of local communities to support equity and sustainability in the transition to rewet peatlands. The detection of carbon deposit degree is of great significance to the maintenance of automobile engine. Due to issues with poor feature aggregation, inter-class similarity, and intra-class variance in carbon deposit data with a small number of samples, model-based discriminative approaches cannot be widely implemented in the market. In order to overcome this technical barrier, the article examines the impact of DCNNs (Deep Convolutional Neural Networks) level on the recognition effect of the degree of carbon deposit, introduces a dropout structure and data enhancement strategy to lower the risk of overfitting brought on by the small dataset, and suggests a recognition method based on the kernel of dual-dimensional multiscale-multifrequency information features to enhance the differentiation characteristic. After experimental testing, the accuracy of this method is 86.9 %, the F1-score is 87.2 %, and the inference speed is 190 FPS, which can meet the practical requirements and provide basic support for the large-scale promotion of the model discrimination. The yeast strain Yarrowia lipolytica IPS 21 was tested for its ability to produce the protease enzyme on analytically pure carbon sources as well as on waste carbon sources. It was confirmed that the yeast Y. lipolytica IPS21 can have a higher proteolytic activity in the presence of waste carbon sources in chrome-tanned leather shavings (CTLS) than on yeast extract alone. This is confirmed by the high concentration of amino acids in samples with CTLS, suggesting increased degradation of CTLS by Y. lipolytica or secretion of proteases into the medium. It was also confirmed that metals accumulate mainly in the biomass and not in the supernatant. The biomass was also found to contain high levels of Ca, K and P, which are essential for plant growth. These results show that Y. lipolytica strain IPS21 can be used for the production of extracellular alkaline proteases and for the degradation of protein waste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forests are the potential source for managing carbon sequestration and balancing universal carbon equilibrium between sources and sinks. In view of the importance of biomass, this study makes an attempt to estimate temporal and spatial carbon stock of Godebie National Park, Ethiopia, using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro radiometer (MODIS), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and the field inventory data through geospatial techniques. A model was developed for establishing the relationship between forest carbon, EVI, and NDVI in the selected study site. The correlation value between estimated carbon stock with EVI were found as 0.69, while with NDVI, the values were obtained as 0.87 respectively. The regression model of measured biomass with NDVI and EVI was developed for the data obtained during the period 2020-2021. The R² values obtained were 0.81 for the regression model between estimated carbon stock and EVI, and 0.77 for the regression model between NDVI and estimated carbon stock. The results indicate that the methodology adopted in this study can help in selecting best fit model for analyzing relationship between carbon stock and NDVI/EVI and for estimating biomass and carbon stock using allometric equation at various spatial scales. The produced output map and allometric equation revealed carbon stock distribution of 5.88 t/ha up to 900 t/ha, with an average value of 406.67. Generally, the approaches used on this study can be used by the forest planners, policy makers, and government officials for conservation and protection of the forest ecosystem. Trichoderma reesei is the most well-known cellulase producer in the biorefinery industry. Its cellulase biosynthesis is repressed by glucose via carbon catabolite repression (CCR), making CCR-releasing strains with cellulase hyperproduction desirable. Here, we employed a microfluidic droplet platform to culture and screen T. reesei mutants capable of CCR release and cellulase overproduction from extensive mutagenesis libraries. With 3 mutagenesis rounds, about 6.20 × 10 3 droplets were sorted from a population of 1.51 × 10 6 droplets in a period of 4.4 h; 76 recovery mutants were screened on flask fermentation, and 2 glucose uptake retarded mutants, MG-9-3 and MG-9-3-30, were eventually isolated. We also generated a hypercellulase producer, M-5, with CCR release via a single mutagenesis round. The hyphal morphology and molecular mechanisms in the mutants were analyzed. This versatile approach combined with a comprehensive understanding of CCR release mechanisms will provide innovative and effective strategies for low-cost cellulase production. Tolvaptan (TOL), a vasopressin V2 receptor antagonists drug, is used to treat hyponatremia in people with heart failure. Herein, we report for the first time the electrochemical behavior of TOL and its oxidation metabolite TOL-oxo on glassy carbon and borondoped diamond electrodes (GCE, BDDE) by cyclic voltammetry (CV). For both molecules, two-electron irreversible oxidation was observed in 0.5 M H2SO4, while single-electron irreversible oxidation occurred at pH 7.0. A sensitive and rapid electroanalytical technique for the detection of TOL has been developed, based on differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Linearity was obtained with GCE within a concentration range between 1-1000 μM, using anodic currents appearing around 1397 mV. Hollow nitrogen-doped carbons, a class of metal free electrocatalysts, offer a wide range of modifications due to their tunable diameter and carbon wall thickness. Herein, hollow nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (HNCS-1000) with numerous structural defects, thin carbon wall of about 8 nm, high (sp²-sp³)/sp³ bond ratio of 3.11 and graphitic-N proportion of 71.4% are prepared using a double pyrolysis strategy. When employed as ORR catalyst in O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution, HNCS-1000 retains high onset and halfwave potentials of 1.03 V and 0.88 V, respectively. In addition, it also demonstrates excellent stability/durability with 90.25% current density retention after 84000 s continuous chronoamperometric operation and only 33 mV loss in halfwave potential after 7000 CV cycles. Overall, the ORR performance of HNCS-1000 surpasses most of the previously reported nitrogendoped carbon catalysts, and it is among the best catalysts for ORR in alkaline environment. This study aimed to compare 9 perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSA) with carbon chain lengths (C4-C12) to inhibit human placental 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (3β-HSD1), aromatase, and rat 3β-HSD4 activities. Human and rat placental 3β-HSDs activities were determined by converting pregnenolone to progesterone and progesterone secretion in JEG-3 cells was determined using HPLC/MS–MS, and human aromatase activity was determined by radioimmunoassay. PFSA inhibited human 3β-HSD1 structure-dependently in the order: perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, half-maximum inhibitory concentration, IC 50 : 9.03 ± 4.83 µmol/L) > perfluorodecanesulfonic acid (PFDS, 42.52 ± 8.99 µmol/L) > perfluoroheptanesulfonic acid (PFHpS, 112.6 ± 29.39 µmol/L) > perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) = perfluoropentanesulfonic acid (PFPS) = perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) = perfluorododecanesulfonic acid (PFDoS) (ineffective at 100 µmol/L). 6:2FTS (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) and 8:2FTS (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecanesulfonic acid) did not inhibit human 3β-HSD1. PFOS and PFHpS are mixed inhibitors, whereas PFDS is a competitive inhibitor. Moreover, 1–10 µmol/L PFOS and PFDS significantly reduced progesterone biosynthesis in JEG-3 cells. Docking analysis revealed that PFSA binds to the steroid-binding site of human 3β-HSD1 in a carbon chain length-dependent manner. All 100 µmol/L PFSA solutions did not affect rat 3β-HSD4 and human placental aromatase activity. Carbon chain length determines inhibitory potency of PFSA on human placental 3β-HSD1 in a V-shaped transition at PFOS (C8), with inhibitory potency of PFOS > PFDS > PFHpS > PFBS = PFPS = PFHxS = PFDoS = 6:2FTS = 8:2FTS. Background Since effective antiviral drugs for COVID-19 are still limited in number, the exploration of compounds that have antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 is in high demand. Porphyrin is potentially developed as a COVID-19 antiviral drug. However, its low solubility in water restricts its clinical application. Reconstruction of porphyrin into carbon dots is expected to possess better solubility and bioavailability as well as lower biotoxicity. Methods and results In this study, we investigated the antiviral activity of porphyrin and porphyrin-derived carbon dots against SARS-CoV-2. Through the in silico analysis and assessment using a novel drug screening platform, namely dimer-based screening system, we demonstrated the capability of the antivirus candidates in inhibiting the dimerization of the C-terminal domain of SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid. It was shown that porphyrin-derived carbon dots possessed lower cytotoxicity on Vero E6 cells than porphyrin. Furthermore, we also assessed their antiviral activity on the SARS-CoV-2-infected Vero E6 cells. The transformation of porphyrin into carbon dots substantially augmented its performance in disrupting SARS-CoV-2 propagation in vitro. Conclusions Therefore, this study comprehensively demonstrated the potential of porphyrin-derived carbon dots to be developed further as a promisingly safe and effective COVID-19 antiviral drug. Carbon emissions are a global issue, especially among manufacturers, and China is facing many problems to lower such pollutants due to its goal of attaining carbon neutrality. This research applies a mathematical model to achieve the desired goal of decreasing CO 2 with the innovation of carbon neutrality tools and by moving towards high quality under the load capacity factor (LCF). We adopt a simulation-based optimization approach at different carbon peaks and manipulate various scenarios in order to find the best decisions for carbon neutrality tools. The results indicate that the green innovation fund, CO 2 emission tax, and CO 2 emission cap have significant roles in maximizing LCF. First, the green innovation fund plays a crucial part in reducing carbon emissions. Second, a CO 2 emission tax allows manufacturers to produce less than the green innovation fund and CO 2 emission cap. Third, the CO 2 emission cap strategy conversely allows manufacturers to produce more than the CO 2 emission tax strategy. This study provides reference for policymakers to achieve carbon neutrality and for the government to determine the best carbon-neutral tools under carbon peak. In the light of China's synergistic need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 10 and 13, it is necessary to consider the potential nexus between common prosperity and carbon reduction. Therefore, this work proposes a new comprehensive measure to assess the degree of common prosperity in 30 Chinese provinces from 2006 to 2019. Furthermore, we examine the impact of common prosperity on carbon emissions applying the system-generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) approach. All major conclusions are as follows: (1) the level of common prosperity has continued to increase between 2006 and 2019; (2) common prosperity and carbon reduction are compatible with each other, i.e., common prosperity significantly reduces carbon emissions; (3) common prosperity reduces carbon emissions indirectly by improving labor productivity and upgrading industrial structure; (4) carbon emissions are indirectly increased by common prosperity through the expansion of gross fixed capital formation and higher levels of urbanization, and (5) in provinces with higher levels of common prosperity and lower levels of carbon emissions, common prosperity has a considerably greater influence on carbon emissions. Yoshi is a very skilled experimentalist and modeler, and he has greatly influenced my thinking about fundamental aspects of organic micropollutant adsorption in the presence of dissolved organic matter, including the mathematical description of adsorption data. Detlef's research efforts have advanced our fundamental understanding of activated carbon adsorption, resulting in improved best practices for carbon selection for the removal of specific organic contaminants from drinking water. Since 1994, the community around the mangrove forest in Kupang District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, has rehabilitated the mangrove forest. Unfortunately, almost three decades of the success story of mangrove rehabilitation has not followed appropriate documentation on biodiversity and potential carbon stock. This research aimed to describe the species composition and estimate the carbon stock of rehabilitated mangrove forests. Forty-five sampling plots were distributed using purposive sampling based on mangrove zonation (distal, middle, proximal) and year of rehabilitation (2004, 2006, 2008). The findings revealed that there are ten mangrove species. Two species, namely Avicennia marina and Sonneratia alba, showed a high importance value index. The average aboveground carbon stock was 454.712 t/ha, distributed in seedlings, saplings, poles, and trees at 0.04%, 2.41%, 51.61%, and 45.94%, respectively.
