- Abstract
What is accepted as scientific theory for one generation sometimes appears as ideology to another. Much 19th century writing on race, and the material on the assimilation of immigrants provide examples. But the ideological implications of current and fashionable theories are frequently resisted, as academic enterprise rises on their foundations. Yet in this respect we should take care. As purveyors of knowledge about social life we help mould socially acceptable definitions. Some of these concern non- British immigrants to Australia, and it is my argument that much of the literature on ethnicity and ethnic groups, which is becoming the currently acceptable idiom for discussing the non-British and their customs, has ideological implications that bear comparison with some of the earlier writings on race.
