Abstract

This essay investigates the careers of prelingually deaf painters active in Italy in the period 1590-1720. By looking at early modern biographical accounts, archival documents, works of art, and Renaissance poetry, this contribution challenges the stereotype that presents people with deafness as outcasts and emphasises that the consideration of intersectional factors was essential to how early modern people responded to impairment. The present study retraces the evolution of the historical debate on the educability of deaf people and analyses interconnections between deafness and art practice. Through the careers of five artists, Ercole Sarti from Ferrara, Giuseppe Badaracco from Genoa, Filippo Ceppaluni from Naples, Aurelio Martelli from Siena, and Giovanni Lo Coco from Acireale, their artworks, and documents pertaining to their lives, the study explores how each of them asserted their own profession, identity, and social position via art practice. Abstract

Building from past work in oral theory that has productively nuanced notions of literacy and orality as multi-faceted and deeply interconnected concepts, this essay calls for an equally complex model for our understanding of the hearing experience itself, focusing in particular on Anglo-Saxon England. To this end, relevant approaches emerging from medieval studies, studies in oral tradition, and — most importantly — Deaf studies are triangulated with the goal of more fully understanding the scant and often cryptic clues that survive to us in such places as law codes, medical texts, literature, and archeological records. Scholars in Deaf studies have long applied interpretive models from oral theory to analyze the cultural expressivity of signed storytelling; the influence of Deaf studies, however, has yet to be fully felt in the fields of oral theory or Anglo-Saxon studies. Opening a dialogue across disciplines can help counteract the potential for audism inherent in “oral” tradition studies, and focusing more sharply on a specific region and period effectively complicates the history of deafness in pre-modern eras. Most importantly, close attention to Deaf studies opens awareness to categories of “hearing” and “deafness” as they were socially constructed in the early medieval world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this response to Rosen's article, "An unintended consequence of IDEA," I expand his argument to consider the multiple possible ways that everyday people interpret the law as practice. The dominance of the law arises in an interdependent relationship between the intent of the law-writers as expressed in text and the public discourses in which disability and education gain meaning. I present the 1982 case of the Board of Education v. Rowley as a backdrop to examine discourses in disability and education that may have informed the Supreme Court's ruling on "Free Appropriate Public Education," and further offer understanding into the school context that led to litigation at the outset. Finally, I propose the central roles of teachers, whose changes in classroom discourses are at the heart of the increasing prominence of Deaf culture and ASL in schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
