Objective: To compare the length of stay (LOS) against the expected date of delivery (EDD) and to describe mortality and LOS outcomes by gestational age (GA) categories over the years. Study design: Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Kids’ Inpatient database discharge records for years 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, and 2016 were analyzed. For premature infants after inclusion–exclusion, actual, and calculated LOS were compared. Mortality and LOS outcomes were analyzed by GA and years. Results: The majority (99%) of infants >28 weeks were discharged by EDD while, for neonate ≤28 weeks, about three-quarters (75%) of infants were discharged by calculated EDD. LOS is increasing while mortality is decreasing by GA categories in recent years. Conclusions: This is the largest study of mortality and LOS in the United States. Our study provides evidence-based numbers comparing actual LOS against EDD, which can be used in perinatal settings to counsel parents.

Background The clinical implementation of laparoscopic tools with haptic feedback is far from becoming a reality, partly because current tools with force feedback are not configured like conventional surgical instruments. Hence, our goal was to incorporate force sensing into existing laparoscopic tools for use in robot-assisted surgery. Methods We developed a laparoscopic grasper with force-feedback capability that would help surgeons to differentiate tissue stiffness based on the measured tissue deformation. Results Surgeons and nonsurgeons alike were able to qualitatively characterize different tissue samples with a high degree of accuracy. The observed force vs deformation characteristic for various tissue samples confirmed the ability of our apparatus to characterize tissues of varying stiffness. Conclusion This innovative laparoscopic grasper with force-feedback capability enables accurate characterization of tissue deformation and is a promising tool for minimally invasive surgery.

The paper presents the hysteresis behavior of axially loaded reinforced concrete bracing members. The object was to study the reduction in stiffness in relation to the number of cycles and the energy dissipation capacity. An existing ´compressiononly loading system´was modified to provide tensioncompression cyclic loading. Eight specimens were tested, each having an effective length to the least lateral dimension ratio of 20 or 30. The effects of longitudinal steel, slenderness ratio, and confinement of concrete are analyzed in this paper. It is concluded that reinforced concrete bracing specimens possess considerably more strength and stiffness in compression than in tension. The initial stiffness in tension varied between 28–36% of the secant stiffness, based on the transformed concrete area. The stiffness in tension cycles varied between 13–140% and in compression cycles between 30–400% of the initial tension stiffness. A simple triangular hysteresis model is proposed that accounts for different elastic stiffnesses in tension and compression, stiffness degradation, and pinchingin effects.

Background:Large animal models that accurately mimic human hemophilia A (HA) are in great demand for developing and testing novel therapies to treat HA. Objectives:To re‐establish a line of sheep exhibiting a spontaneous bleeding disorder closely mimicking severe human HA, fully characterize their clinical presentation, and define the molecular basis for disease. Patients/methods:Sequential reproductive manipulations were performed with cryopreserved semen from a deceased affected ram. The resultant animals were examined for hematologic parameters, clinical symptoms, and responsiveness to human FVIII (hFVIII). The full coding region of sheep FVIII mRNA was sequenced to identify the genetic lesion. Results and conclusions:The combined reproductive technologies yielded 36 carriers and 8 affected animals. The latter had almost non‐existent levels of FVIII:C and extremely prolonged aPTT, with otherwise normal hematologic parameters. These animals exhibited bleeding from the umbilical cord, prolonged tail and nail cuticle bleeding time, and multiple episodes of severe spontaneous bleeding, including hemarthroses, muscle hematomas and hematuria, all of which responded to hFVIII. Inhibitors of hFVIII were detected in four treated animals, further establishing the preclinical value of this model. Sequencing identified a premature stop codon and frame‐shift in exon 14, providing a molecular explanation for HA. Given the decades of experience using sheep to study both normal physiology and a wide array of diseases and the high homology between human and sheep FVIII, this new model will enable a better understanding of HA and facilitate the development and testing of novel treatments that can directly translate to HA patients.

Abstract: 2-Amino-4-(coumarin-3-yl)-thiazole (1) reacted with acetyl chloride gives compound (2) which on further refluxed with various aromatic aldehydes gives compound (3a-j). Thus obtained (3a-j) on further condensed with NH4OH.HCl using NaOH as a catalyst afforded isoxazoles (4a-j). All the synthesized compounds characterized on the basis of the IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and elemental analysis. All the compounds have been screened for antibacterial activity against bacteria (Gram + ve) & (Gram − ve) and antifungal activity.

Background: No effective therapeutic options for patients with unresectable imatinib-resistant gastrointestinal stromal tumour are available. We did a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, international trial to assess tolerability and anticancer efficacy of sunitinib, a multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in patients with advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumour who were resistant to or intolerant of previous treatment with imatinib. Methods: Blinded sunitinib or placebo was given orally once daily at a 50-mg starting dose in 6-week cycles with 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off treatment. The primary endpoint was time to tumour progression. Intention-to-treat, modified intention-to-treat, and per-protocol analyses were done. This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00075218. Findings: 312 patients were randomised in a 2:1 ratio to receive sunitinib (n=207) or placebo (n=105); the trial was unblinded early when a planned interim analysis showed significantly longer time to tumour progression with sunitinib. Median time to tumour progression was 27.3 weeks (95% CI 16.0-32.1) in patients receiving sunitinib and 6.4 weeks (4.4-10.0) in those on placebo (hazard ratio 0.33; p<0.0001). Therapy was reasonably well tolerated; the most common treatment-related adverse events were fatigue, diarrhoea, skin discolouration, and nausea. Interpretation: We noted significant clinical benefit, including disease control and superior survival, with sunitinib compared with placebo in patients with advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumour after failure and discontinuation of imatinab. Tolerability was acceptable.

Coronary artery bypass grafting with hypothermic cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with myocardial injury. Our study investigated whether an infusion of glucose, insulin and potassium (GIK) during elective coronary artery bypass surgery decreases myocardial cell death.

Yeast alcohol dehydrogenase (YADH), which catalyzes oxidoreductions of a broad spectrum of substrates, was immobilized by entrapping it into a network of a poly(acrylamide-co-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) copolymer and was also covalently bound onto porous chitosan beads activated through glutaraldehyde. Maximum retention of YADH activity achieved was 90 and 24% for entrapment and covalent binding, respectively. The results obtained for thermal, storage, and operational stability of entrapped and covalently bound YADH were compared with free YADH. The immobilized enzyme showed improved thermal and storage stability. The immobilized enzymes also retained 50% activity after six and eight cycles. Enzyme-catalyzed oxidation of ethanol was observed to be diffusion-controlled through Lineweaver–Burk plots. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 82: 1299–1305, 2001

A mild and reproducible method has been developed for the entrapment of α-chymotrypsin into a crosslinked copolymer. A porous copolymer was synthesized at 293 K by solution copolymerization of acrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. α-Chymotrypsin was entrapped during copolymerization at different polymerization stages. The effect of crosslinking on enzyme loading and retention of its activity was examined. Copolymer with 2% crosslinking could entrap >90% of the enzyme. The activity of free and immobilized α-chymotrypsin was determined by using N-benzoyl-L-tyrosine ethyl ester and casein as low and high molecular weight substrates respectively. Storage as well as thermal stability of the immobilized enzyme was superior to that of the free one. Effect of calcium and heavy metal ions was studied on immobilized enzyme activity. The immobilized enzyme showed little variation in activity with pH and retained 50% activity after nine cycles. The Michaelis constant Km of the free and immobilized enzyme was estimated to be 2.7 and 4.2 × 10⁻³ mM, respectively, indicating no conformational changes during entrapment. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. It has long been established that the ratio of total to selective extinction is anomalously large (>- 5) in certain regions of the interstellar medium. In these regions of anomalous extinction the dust grains are likely to be irregular in shape and fluffy in structure. Using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) we calculate the extinction for porous and fluffy grains. We apply DDA first to solid spheroidal particles assumed to be made of a certain (large) number of dipoles. Then we systematically reduce the number of dipoles to model the porous grains. The aggregates of these particles are suggested to form the fluffy grains. We study the extinction for these particles as a function of grain size, porosity and wavelength. We apply these calculations to interpret the observed extincttion data in the regions of star formation (e.g. the Orion complex).

Gujarat is one of the western states of India. The workable sand deposits are available in shoals along number of rivers in the state. Since 1980 to 1982, 150 sand samples from 100 different rivers in the state have been collected and petrographically examined. The paper described the classification of the sand deposits into four different groups viz., (i) Kachchh Group (ii) Saurashtra Group (iii) North Gujarat Group (iv) South Gujarat Group. This classification is based upon the variation in percentage of various contituents and their physical as well as chemical properties. The authors have established the relationship of the sand deposits with provenance and the geomorphology of the area through which the rivers flow. They have recommanded the suitability of sand deposits of the above four groups based on physical and chemical properties of the constituents. Gujarat est un des états occidentaux de l'Inde. Les dépots de sable sont abondants le long des nombreuses rivières de l'état. Depuis 1980, 150 échantillons de sable de différentes rivières ont été pris et examinés pétrographiquement. Abstract: NighttimeF-region temperatures have been obtained over Mount Abu (24·6°N, 72·7°E geographic, 15·0° geomagnetic latitude) by monitoring OI 6300 Å line widths, using Fabry-Perot spectrometer. Enhancement in neutral temperatures associated with spread-F activity over Thumba (8·5°N, 76·8°E geographic, 0·6°S geomagnetic), which is on the magnetic equator were reported earlier. Additional data over Mt Abu for seven days bring out the following major features. (i) In theF-region over Mt Abu, the neutral temperature enhancements upto 200°K are observed on most of the nights when there is spread-F activity over the magnetic equator. (ii) There are no occasions which show temperature enhancements over Mt Abu without spread-F activity over the equator. On such occasions the observed atmospheric temperatures agree very well with those calculated on the basis of the Jachhia atmospheric model, both for magnetically quiet as well as disturbed days. (iii) There is a good indication that the increase inF-region temperature over Mt Abu is delayed with respect to the onset of spread-F over Thumba by approximately 15–30 min.

Gravitational settling of dust grains in dark clouds has been considered. It has been shown that such a process gives rise to a modification of the grain size distribution. Starting with a simple model of uniform spherical cloud and normal interstellar grain size distribution for the dust we derive expressions for the modified grain size distribution function, average grain size and extinction as functions of distance from the cloud's center and the age of the cloud. The mean grain size increases towards the center of the cloud as does the extinction. Results of the numerical evaluation of these quantities have been discussed with their implications for the observations of anomalous reddening and polarization within dark clouds and Bok globules.

We describe here a scanning piezo-electric Fabry-Pérot spectrometer operating in the photoncounting mode whose plate spacing and parallelism are maintained by a servo-controlled system, ensuring high accuracy, for the study of emission lines from extended astronomical objects in the spectral range 4500–7000 Å. Details of the optical set-up and the Data Acquisition System (DAS) are described. Its performance at the Cassegrain focus of the 1 m telescope at Kavalur is discussed. Some line profiles on planetary nebulae studied with the above spectrometer are also presented.

We describe the concept and the performance of a high-pass digital filter to enhance the faint Fabry-Pérot interferograms. The filter was used to analyse the comet Halley-Ha interferogram. The results are briefly discussed.

We have obtained Ha emission line profiles from R Aquarii, a Mira variable surrounded by a complex nebulosity, using a very high-resolution Fabry-Pérot spectrometer. A new feature that was seen in our observations is the fact that the line profile shows a splitting which we interpret as due to two expanding shells surrounding the star with velocities of ~5 km s-1 and ~15 km s-1. The expansion velocities show an acceleration outwards due perhaps to the radiation pressure caused momentum transfer. Possible periodic variation of radial velocity derived from observations is discussed.

Abstract: Fabry-Perot interferometric observations on the green coronal line (λ 5303 �) carried out during the total solar eclipse of 1980 February 16 have yielded relative Doppler shift velocities with an accuracy of � 7 km s-1. The values show a peak in the 30–50 km s-1 range indicating largescale macroscopic mass motion in the solar maximum corona.

Abstract: During the recent apparition of Comet Halley in 1985-86 a transient ionic event in the form of a blob of H2 O+ emission was recorded in thecoma at ∼ 0h UT on 1986 March 13. Observations were carried out using a special IHW filter for H2 O+ emission at 7000 �/175 �, a 35 cm telescope, a Fabry-Perot interferometer and an image intensifier camera from Gurushikhar, Mt Abu. (24‡39’N,72‡ 47’E). A Fabry-Perot inter-ferogram in Ha taken a few minutes later at the same location reveals strong hydrogen emission (Hα) associated with the blob. The velocity field in the blob is structured with relative velocities upto ∼ 35km s−1. The event is interpreted as arising due to the sector boundary crossing of the interplanetary magnetic field by the comet

The paper discusses the low contrast of the Fabry-Perot (FP) fringes observed in the interferograms of the solar corona. The various factors which affect the interfringe intensity of Fabry-Pérot line profiles are considered. The effect of continuum radiation on the interfringe intensity of Fabry-Pérot line profiles is calculated by assuming a coronal model. For the given FP, it was found that unless the ratio of line to continuum intensity (integrated line intensity to continuum per angström) is less than 10, continuum contribution has no significant effect on the fringe contrast. The analysis may be pertinent in the design aspects of a FP interferometer for astronomical observations. The excess interfringe intensity found in the coronal line profiles is interpreted as due to the presence of fast moving plasma components in corona along the line of sight. A detailed analysis qualitatively shows that the line excitation conditions existing in ambient corona and coronal loops are different in active regions while they are more similar in polar regions.

Fabry-Perot Interferometric observations were made on Orion Nebula in the forbidden emission line [S II] 6731 Å line. The observed field is about 6' × 6' on the face of the nebula and it covers the Orion Trapezium stars and the nearby regions. The relative line of sight velocities which denote the average deviations from the systematic velocities were derived at a large number of points in the nebula. Velocities were found to show a gradient towards the north of Trapezium stars. Large blue shifted velocities were found at the nebular boundaries, probably associated with the ionization fronts. The observed velocities, in general, show agreement with the flow model of Balick, Gull and Smith (1980).

Using the recently available exact computations of the scattering efficiencies of spheroidal particles numerical calculations of the extinction and polarization curves have been made for a distribution of particle sizes, shapes and orientations. The results are presented and compared with the observed interstellar extinction and polarization. Possible models for interstellar dust with nonspherical grains have been discussed.

During the total solar eclipse of 11 June, 1983, an imaging dual-channel Fabry-Pérot interferometer was used to obtain line profiles simultaneously in the green λ5303 Å [Fe xiv] and the red λ6374 Å [Fe x] coronal lines at various positions in the corona. Extensive microdensitometry followed by multi-Gaussian curve-fitting analysis has resulted in the determination of coronal temperatures and velocity separations between different pockets of coronal gas in the line of sight over a large extent of the corona. Fewer high temperature zones are to be found in the corona of 1983 compared with our similar green-line measurements of the solar maximum corona of 1980. The data are consistent with a temperature maximum occurring at 1.2 R⊙, as found at the 1980 eclipse, but our new data are insufficient to observe farther out than this radius and so determine the position of a maximum. The velocity field in the corona at the 1983 eclipse is less structured compared with that at the 1980 eclipse and is mainly confined to the zone 20–30km s−1.

Abstract: Addition of 1,8-diaminonaphthalene1 to dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (DMAD) leads to the perimidine4a and the naphthodiazepine3a. A similar reaction with the diethyl ester (DEAD) gave rise to3b and4b. The latter product has been incorrectly formulated as naphthodiazepine2b in the literature. 1,8-Dihydroxynaphthalene8 and DMAD gives rise to the naphthodioxane9, which is hydrolysed to the diacid11. 8-Hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (14) and acetylenic esters form pyridobenzoxazines15, which exist as equilibrium mixture of15 and16 in solution. The ethyl ester is hydrogenated to the dihydroderivative18b.1H and more particularly13C NMR spectra are used to assign structures to various products.

Slop oil, i.e. waste oil from a petrochemical complex, contains at least 240 hydrocarbon components, of which 54% are from C5 to C11 and the rest from C12 to C23. Of 22 isolated bacterial cultures that were able to degrade slop oil, seven could each degrade about 40% of the slop oil, and a mixture of all seven could degrade =50% in liquid medium. Bioaugmentation of soil contaminated with slop oil with the mixed bacterial culture gave up to 70% degradation of slop oil after 30 days. This compares with 40% degradation without bioaugmentation. Bioaugmentation led to a significant increase in counts of bacteria able to degrade slop oil. Wheat sown on bioaugmented soil germinated and grew better than on non-augmented soil and led to increased degradation of slop oil (up to 80%). This indicates the potential of mixed culture for bioremediation.

The films of poly(4,4'-cyclohexylidene diphenylene-m-benzene disulfonate) (PSBB, 0.610 mm thick) and poly(4,4'-cyclohexylidene diphenylene-toluene-2,4-disulfonate) (PSBT, 0.537 mm thick) showed 8.23 ± 0.25 and 9.6 ± 0.245 kV, respectively, as the dielectric breakdown voltage (ac) in air at room temperature. The same films have 8.8 × 1011 and 7.2 × 1014 ω°Cm volume resistivity. PSBB (40 μm thick) and PSBT (50 μm thick) films have tensile strengths of 1971 and 1677 kg/cm2 and percent elongations of 1.3 and 1.2, respectively. The static hardnesses of PSBB (0.178 mm thick) and PSBT (0.190 mm thick) at three different loads (15-60 g) are 12.8-15.5 and 14.5-16.5 kg/mm2, respectively. PSBB and PSBT are thermally stable up to about 355°C in an N2 atmosphere and involve two-step degradation. DSC and DTA showed Tg at about 125-127 and 138-142°C, respectively, for PSBB and PSBT in N2. PSBB and PSBT have comparable breakdown voltages and volume resistivity with some useful plastics whereas they have superior Tg and thermal stability with retention of excellent solubility in common solvents over polysulfonates without a cardo group. Thus, the cardo (cyclo-hexyl) group has enhanced thermal and mechanical properties with excellent solubility and easy processing.

Cardo polysulfonates (PSBCB and PSBCT) of 1,1'-bis(4-hydroxy phenyl)cyclohexane with benzene-1,3 and toluene-2,4-disulfonyl chlorides have been synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of 1,1'-bis(4-hydroxy phenyl)cyclohexane (0.005 mol) with benzene-1,3/toluene-2,4-disulfonyl chlorides (0.005 mol) using water-chloroform (4:1, v/v) as interphase, alkali (0.015 mol) as acid acceptor, and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (0.125 g) as emulsifier at 0°C for 3 hours. The structures of the polymers were supported by IR and NMR spectral data. The PSBCT was fractionated into several fractions by using 1,2-dichloroethane as solvent and n-butanol as precipitant. The fractions were characterized by GPC and viscometry in different solvents at four different temperatures. Viscosity studies showed that the PSBCT is flexible in solutions and has a specific solvent effect. PSBCB and PSBCT have good biological activity against E. coli and S. citrus organisms, and they possess excellent hydrolytic stability toward acids and alkalis.

The activity of cobalt induced acrylonitrile hydratase was found to be 130% higher than the iron induced acrylonitrile hydratase in Arthrobaetersp. IPCB-3. The activity of cobalt induced hydratase was not affected up to 6% (w/v) acrylonitrile and 25% (w/v) acrylamide. However, iron induced hydratase activity was significantly inhibited even at half the concentration of the above components. Such a higher tolerance for the substrate and the product makes the Arthrobactersp. IPCB-3 a potential candidate for the commercial production of acrylamide.

ACN-hydratase inArthrobacter sp. IPCB-3 has been found to be induced by acetonitrile and urea and repressed by glucose. When acetonitrile was used as an inducer the synthesis of enzyme increased to about 2 folds and 4.5 folds on addition of iron and cobalt to the medium, respectively. However, when urea was used as an inducer only cobalt stimulated the enzyme synthesis and gave maximum activity (70 units/mg dry cells). In contrast to the stimulation of iron containing ACN-hydratase, yeast extract failed to stimulate further the synthesis of cobalt containing enzyme irrespective of the inducer present in the medium.

Ethyl cellulose pseudolatices were prepared by an emulsion-solvent evaporation technique, which consisted of dissolving the polymer in a blend of benzene and ethyl alcohol, followed by the addition of adjuvants. The organic, solvents were removed from the emulsion using vacuum distillation. Physical evaluation of the dispersions and the cast films was carried out.On the basis of characteristics of cast films selected formulations were fused as granulating agents for preparing chlorpheniramine maleate tablets. Good correlation was observed between total solid in the granulating dispersion and the drug release. The possible mechanisms for the drug release from the tablets are suggested.

Clinical revaluation and genetic analysis of six Indian pedigrees, segregating autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia, slow saccades and peripheral neuropathy, has been undertaken, and expansion at the spinocerebellar ataxia 2 (SCA2) locus was confirmed in 14 affected family members. These families became available from 31 phenotypically similar families seen over the years. In common with other neurodegenerative disorders resulting from expansion of a CAG trinucleotide repeat motif, an inverse correlation between repeat size and age at onset and severity is observed, although the size range (36-45 repeat units) for the expanded alleles is comparatively limited. Saccadic velocity was reduced in all our patients, even in the early stages of the disease. The observation of slow saccades in affected individuals has been proposed previously as an important diagnostic criterion serving to distinguish the SCA2 phenotype. This is now confirmed in a retrospective study of the clinical literature, facilitated by the cloning of the SCA2 gene and the subsequent genetic analysis of families segregating this phenotype. We therefore argue that the clinical appraisal of 'ophthalmoplegia' be subject to more precise definition, as differentiation between the various types of ocular dysfunction can be an important adjunct to diagnosis.Keywords:ataxia; slow saccades; SCA2; CAG trinucleotide repeat; ophthalmoplegia

We have previously shown that appropriate modification of the benzocycloheptapyridine tricyclic ring system can provide potent farnesyl protein transferase (FPT) inhibitors with good cellular activity. Our laboratories have also established that incorporation of either pyridinylacetyl N-oxide or 4-N-carboxamidopiperidinylacetyl moieties results in pharmacokinetically stable inhibitors that are orally efficacious in nude mice. We now demonstrate that further elaboration of the tricyclic ring system by introducing a bromine atom at the 7- or the 10-position of the 3-bromo-8-chlorotricyclic ring system provides compounds that have superior potency and selectivity in FPT inhibition. These compounds have good serum levels and half-lives when given orally to rodents and primates. In vitro and in vivo evaluation of a panel of these inhibitors has led to identification of 15 (SCH 66336) as a highly potent (IC50 = 1.9 nM) antitumor agent that is currently undergoing human clinical trials.

We have studied the effects of whole body cooling on phrenic nerve and diaphragmatic function in 26 patients using magnetic stimulation of the phrenic nerves with a pair of Magstim 200 HP stimulator coils during cardiopulmonary bypass. The diaphragmatic electromyogram in response to magnetic pulses was recorded with needle electrodes at two temperatures, approximately 31 degrees C (cold) and approximately 36 degrees C (warm) during the cooling or rewarming phase of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. This 5 degrees C temperature change was associated with clear changes in the evoked electromyographical response of the diaphragm. Median latency between stimulus and electromyographic response was 10.1 (range 8.0-11.8) ms during cold and 8.3 (5.9-10.2) ms during warm stimulation (P < 0.001). Median duration of the muscle compound action potential was prolonged and its amplitude reduced in cold compared with warm stimulations (P < 0.01). These effects were enhanced by application of ice slush to the heart. We conclude that diaphragmatic function may be affected by mild hypothermia after cardiac surgery.

During the total solar eclipse of 11 June 1983 over Java, Indonesia, a dual-channel Fabry-Perot interferometric system was used to study simultaneously the coronal emission lines at 5303 Å (Fe xiv) and at 6374 Å (Fe x). The two coronal lines were spatially separated by a multilayer interference beam splitter; the beams then entered two separate optically contacted Fabry-Perot systems operating off-axis. The resulting interference fringes were imaged on fine-grain film. Initial results indicate an emission corona confined largely within 1.2 R_⊙. Doppler temperatures derived from the width of the 5303-Å line appear to be appreciably lower than similar temperatures determined during the solar-maximum eclipse of 1980.

The forbidden O I line and NH2 (0-8-0) emissions of Comet Halley at about 6300 A were observed during April 1986 using a Fabry-Perot spectrometer with a resolution of about 0.14 A. The forbidden O I line and NH2 rotational lines were spectrally well separated by the interferometer and a NH2/O I ratio of about 0.5 was found. The profile analysis shows the profiles of forbidden O I line and NH2 to be symmetric with linewidths of about 3.5-3 km/s. The cometary Balmer emission of hydrogen at 6563 A was barely detectable. An upper limit for Halphabased on the instrumental sensitivity yields a value of 30 Rayleighs.
