The article discusses the isolation and structural elucidation of the novel cyclic peptide, epichlicin, from a culture broth of Epichloe typhina, and its biological activity as a spore germination inhibitor. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies and mass spectrometry were used to determine the structure of epichlicin. Epichlicin demonstrated inhibitory activity toward the spore germination of Cladosporium phlei, a pathogenic fungus of the timothy plant.
