• Transition toward quality wine production in the Midi region of southern France reflects wider norms in French quality agro-food production and regulation but also departs from it. • Diverse practices and policies comprising a move toward more sustainable wine production in the Midi are highly relevant to the shift to quality wine making but are not synonymous with it. • The Midi shift to quality wine production involves a dynamic re-articulation of independent and cooperative modes of vinification and includes important changes to cooperative practices and governance. • Cooperative growers have been slower than independent growers in the uptake of more sustainable agronomic practices, owing in large measure to economic and logistical challenges. • In-depth profile of three ethnographic subjects highlights ways that individuals negotiate and give shape to broad changes in the Midi winescape but also the ways these individuals make choices constrained by broader social, institutional and environmental context. The purpose of this research study was to assess the development of wine tourism in Burgundy, France. As a famous wine region, Burgundy has traditionally focused on the export of their product and has not been as proactive as other wine regions in the promotion of tourism. However, this is slowly changing as the industry begins to transform itself and create more welcoming experiences for tourists. The methodology involved both quantitative and qualitative approaches. An analysis of 133 winery websites was conducted to assess readiness for wine tourism. In addition, a series of 18 in-depth interviews with various sized wineries was completed to analyze existing marketing practices, including direct to consumer sales derived from wine tourism. Finally, an online content analysis of existing Burgundian wine tourism organizations was conducted. Results show that some Burgundy wineries are serving as trailblazers in opening cellar doors and offering more tours and experiences to wine tourists. However, the website analysis suggests that Burgundian wineries should upgrade their digital marketing strategies to attract more tourists and create more positive brand perception. From a regional branding viewpoint, Burgundy seems to be excelling at differentiating themselves from other wine regions and creating a compelling brand proposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to empirically investigate the effect of music and visual congruency with a type of liquor in a bar. Specifically, it examines the effect of atmospheric elements’ congruency with wine on patrons’ liquor-ordering behavior and their expenditures. As most Koreans associate wine with French culture, French auditory and visual cues were used to investigate the effect of congruency. A total of 650 receipts from two different branches of a bar were collected for four weeks. The study found that in the visual congruence condition, the ratio of wine expenditure to the total expenditure of a table and the ratio of liquor expenditure to the total expenditure of a table increased. When the auditory congruence condition was implemented, the probability of ordering wine increased. There was no interaction effect. This article focuses on the 1905 crisis of French and Algerian viticulture that came to be known as the "Leakey Affair." It explains why metropolitan French observers reacted so strongly to Leakey's contract and subsequent advertising of Algerian wine on the British market, first from a socio-economic perspective, and second by reference to the importance of wine in French culture and identity. The final section of the article explains the response of Algeria's colonists to their metropolitan critics. Throughout, wine is used is a prism through which to explore the nature of identity in modern France and the complex colonial relationship in which the wine industry played such a major role. The Leakey Affair revealed the fragility of colonial cultural formations and the importance of wine as a conduit of ideas, and a symbol for fierce wrangling over identity, belonging, and the nature of empire. What was at stake was no less than the intellectual ownership of a mainstay of France's cultural mythology - wine - and the relationship between an imperial power and its colonial world.
