Examination of genitalia should be an essential part of newborn assessment. Early detection of congenital disorders is essential to begin appropriate medical or surgical therapy and to prevent complications that could profoundly affect a child’s life. The present review aims to describe the main genital anomalies in infants and provide images in order to help the physician in current clinical practice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by heterogeneous cognitive, behavioral and communication impairments. Disruption of the gut–brain axis (GBA) has been implicated in ASD although with limited reproducibility across studies. In this study, we developed a Bayesian differential ranking algorithm to identify ASD-associated molecular and taxa profiles across 10 cross-sectional microbiome datasets and 15 other datasets, including dietary patterns, metabolomics, cytokine profiles and human brain gene expression profiles. We found a functional architecture along the GBA that correlates with heterogeneity of ASD phenotypes, and it is characterized by ASD-associated amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid profiles predominantly encoded by microbial species in the genera Prevotella, Bifidobacterium, Desulfovibrioand Bacteroidesand correlates with brain gene expression changes, restrictive dietary patterns and pro-inflammatory cytokine profiles. The functional architecture revealed in age-matched and sex-matched cohorts is not present in sibling-matched cohorts. We also show a strong association between temporal changes in microbiome composition and ASD phenotypes. In summary, we propose a framework to leverage multi-omic datasets from well-defined cohorts and investigate how the GBA influences ASD.

This paper examines the potential link between COVID-19 and the presence of comorbidities and assesses the role of inflammation in this correlation. In COVID-19 patients, the most frequently associated diseases share a pathogenic inflammatory basis and apparently act as a risk factor in the onset of a more severe form of the disease, particularly in adulthood. However, in children, the understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanisms is often complicated by the milder symptoms presented. A series of theories have, therefore, been put forward with a view of providing a better understanding of the role played by inflammation in this dramatic setting. All evidence available to date on this topic is discussed in this review.

Introduction: Breast Milk (BM), containing nutrients and bioactive components, represents the best source for neonatal nutrition and determines short- and long- term benefits. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) play an active role in these pathophysiological mechanisms. In fact, they influence the shaping of breastfed infant’s gut microbiota, promote intestinal development, confer protection against intestinal or systemic infections modulating immune system; moreover, HMOs determine extra-intestinal effects on several target organs, i.e reducing necrotizing enterocolitis rate or improving brain development. Aims: In this review, we analyze the great inter- and intra-individual variability of BM HMOs, investigating maternal, genetic and environmental factors modulating their composition. Moreover, we provide an update regarding HMOs’ unique properties, underlining their complex interaction with intestinal microbiota and host-derived metabolites. The possible HMOs’ influence on extraintestinal bacterial communities, potentially influencing newborns’ and even lactating mothers’ health, have been hypothesized. Finally, recognized HMOs’ crucial role, we underline the promising opportunities showed by their addition in formula milk, to make it more similar to maternal milk itself.

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) is a clinical condition characterized by a sudden and dramatic obsessive-compulsive disorder with a suggested post-infectious immune-mediated etiology. This condition is accompanied by an extensive series of relatively serious neuropsychiatric symptoms. The diagnosis of PANS is made by "exclusion", as the individual PANS symptoms overlap with a multiplicity of psychiatric disorders with the onset in childhood. A number of researchers accumulated evidence to support the hypothesis that PANS was closely associated with a number of infections. In the last decade, metabolomics played an essential role in improving the knowledge of complex biological systems and identifying potential new biomarkers as indicators of pathological progressions or pharmacologic responses to therapy. The metabolome is considered the most predictive phenotype, capable of recognizing epigenetic differences, reflecting more closely the clinical reality at any given moment and thus providing extremely dynamic data. In the present work, the most recent hypothesis and suggested mechanisms of this condition are reviewed and the case of a 10 - year-old girl with PANS is described, before and after clarithromycin treatment. The main results of this case report are discussed from a metabolomics point of view. The alteration of several metabolic pathways concerning the microbial activity highlights the possible role of the microbiome in the development of PANS. Furthermore, different metabolic perturbations at the level of protein biosynthesis, energy and amino acid metabolisms are observed and discussed. Based on our observations, it is believed that metabolomics is a promising technology to unravel the mysteries of PANS in the near future.

The evolving field of multi‐omics combines data and provides methods for simultaneous analysis across several omics levels. Here, we integrated genomics (transmitted and non‐transmitted polygenic scores [PGSs]), epigenomics, and metabolomics data in a multi‐omics framework to identify biomarkers for Attention‐Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and investigated the connections among the three omics levels. We first trained single‐ and next multi‐omics models to differentiate between cases and controls in 596 twins (cases = 14.8%) from the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) demonstrating reasonable in‐sample prediction through cross‐validation. The multi‐omics model selected 30 PGSs, 143 CpGs, and 90 metabolites. We confirmed previous associations of ADHD with glucocorticoid exposure and the transmembrane protein family TMEM, show that the DNA methylation of the MAD1L1gene associated with ADHD has a relation with parental smoking behavior, and present novel findings including associations between indirect genetic effects and CpGs of the STAP2gene. However, out‐of‐sample prediction in NTR participants (N= 258, cases = 14.3%) and in a clinical sample (N= 145, cases = 51%) did not perform well (range misclassification was [0.40, 0.57]). The results highlighted connections between omics levels, with the strongest connections between non‐transmitted PGSs, CpGs, and amino acid levels and show that multi‐omics designs considering interrelated omics levels can help unravel the complex biology underlying ADHD.

Breast Milk (BM) is the best source of nutrition for newborns, especially if premature. In fact, its beneficial impact on short- and the long-term neonatal outcome has was deeply described. Unfortunately, BM could not be always so safe, especially due to the possible presence of maternal viruses that can be shed and transferred to the breastfed neonate. Among these, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can potentially lead to a serious and acute illness, mostly in case of low gestational age. Some studies also report the association of CMV-acquired infection to an increased risk of structural and functional brain modifications and neurological impairment. Due to these reasons, a strategy to remove CMV from BM with a minimal or absent impact on its beneficial components would be desirable. Up to now, pasteurization, freezing, ultraviolet- C or microwave irradiation are the available techniques; they show different levels of efficacy and variable effects on BM composition, even if many studies are still needed to fully clarify these implications. In this review, we provide an update of the current evidence about these topics. We focus on the factors promoting CMV shedding through BM; moreover, the possible occurrence of a severe disease in preterm neonates is also described. Finally, we investigate the potential effects showed on BM properties by the strategies that prevent or reduce viral transmission, therefore influencing newborns’ health, and the new techniques which could show a relevant role in the next future, such as metabolomics.

Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), also referred with the expression “Ondine’s Curse”, is a rare genetic life-long disease resulting from the mutation of PHOX2B gene on chromosome 4p12.3. CCHS represents an autonomic nervous system disorder; its more fearsome manifestation is central hypoventilation, due to a deficient response of chemoreceptors to hypercapnia and hypoxia. Several associated symptoms can occur, such as pupillary anomalies, arrhythmias, reduced heart rate variability, esophageal dysmotility, and structural comorbidities (Hirschsprung’s Disease or neural crest tumours). CCHS typical onset is during the neonatal period, but cases of delayed diagnosis have been reported; moreover, both sporadic or familial cases can occur. In preterm newborns, asphyxia and typical prematurity-related findings may overlap CCHS clinical manifestations and make it harder to formulate a correct diagnosis. The early recognition of CCHS allows appropriate management, useful to reduce immediate and long- term consequences.

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) persistence is associated, in prematures, to several complications. The optimal PDA management is still under debate, especially regarding the best therapeutic approach and the time to treat. The available drugs are not exempt from contraindications and side effects; ibuprofen itself, although representing the first-choice therapy, can show nephrotoxicity and other complications. Paracetamol seems a valid alternative to classic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs, with a lower toxicity.Areas covered: Through an analysis of the published literature on ibuprofen and paracetamol effects in preterm neonates, this review compares the available treatments for PDA, analyzing the mechanisms underlining ibuprofen-associated nephrotoxicity and the eventual paracetamol-induced hepatic damage, also providing an update of what has been yet demonstrated and a clear description of the still open issues.Expert Opinion: Paracetamol is an acceptable alternative in case of contraindication to ibuprofen; its toxicity, in this setting, is very low. Lower doses may be effective, with even fewer risks. In the future, paracetamol could represent an efficacious first-line therapy, although its safety, optimal dosage, and global impact have to be fully clarified through long-term trials, also in the perspective of an individualized and person-based therapy taking into account the extraordinary individual variability.

NMR-based metabolomics was used to compare the metabolic urinary profiles of exclusively breast-fed term infants (n= 11) with those of a double-blinded controlled trial with 49 formula-fed term newborns randomized to receive either an infant formula enriched by functional ingredients (n= 24) or a standard formula (n= 25). Anthropometric measurements and urine samples were taken at enrollment (within the first month of life), at around 60 days of life, and at the end of study period (average age of 130 days). The metabolic profiles were examined in relation to time and diet strategy. A common age-dependent modification of the urine metabolome was observed for the three types of nutrition, mainly characterized by similar temporal trends of choline, betaine, myoinositol, taurine, and citrate. Contrariwise, differences in the metabolic profiles were identified according to the type of diet (human versus formula milk), while no significant difference was observed between the two formulas. These modifications are discussed mainly in terms of the different milk compositions. Despite the low number of enrolled infants (n= 60), these findings pointed out the potential of the metabolomics approach for neonatal nutritional science, in particular to provide important contributions to the optimization of formula milk.

Human aggression encompasses a wide range of behaviors and is related to many psychiatric disorders. We introduce the different classification systems of aggression and related disorders as a basis for discussing biochemical biomarkers and then present an overview of studies in humans (published between 1990 and 2015) that reported statistically significant associations of biochemical biomarkers with aggression, DSM‐IV disorders involving aggression, and their subtypes. The markers are of different types, including inflammation markers, neurotransmitters, lipoproteins, and hormones from various classes. Most studies focused on only a limited portfolio of biomarkers, frequently a specific class only. When integrating the data, it is clear that compounds from several biological pathways have been found to be associated with aggressive behavior, indicating complexity and the need for a broad approach. In the second part of the paper, using examples from the aggression literature and psychiatric metabolomics studies, we argue that a better understanding of aggression would benefit from a more holistic approach such as provided by metabolomics. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

An important contribution to the variability of any proteome is given by the time dimension that should be carefully considered to define physiological modifications. To this purpose, whole saliva proteome was investigated in a wide age range. Whole saliva was collected from 17 preterm newborns with a postconceptional age at birth of 178–217 days. In these subjects sample collection was performed serially starting immediately after birth and within about 1 year follow-up, gathering a total of 111 specimens. Furthermore, whole saliva was collected from 182 subjects aged between 0 and 17 years and from 23 adults aged between 27 and 57 years. The naturally occurring intact salivary proteome of the 316 samples was analyzed by low- and high-resolution HPLC–ESI–MS platforms. Proteins peculiar of the adults appeared in saliva with different time courses during human development. Acidic proline-rich proteins encoded by PRH2locus and glycosylated basic proline-rich proteins encoded by PRB3locus appeared following 180 days of postconceptional age, followed at 7 months (±2 weeks) by histatin 1, statherin, and P–B peptide. The other histatins and acidic proline-rich proteins encoded by PRH1locus appeared in whole saliva of babies from 1 to 3 weeks after the normal term of delivery, S-type cystatins appeared at 1 year (±3 months), and basic proline-rich proteins appeared at 4 years (±1 year) of age. All of the proteinases involved in the maturation of salivary proteins were more active in preterm than in at-term newborns, on the basis of the truncated forms detected. The activity of the Fam20C kinase, involved in the phosphorylation of various proteins, started around 180 days of postconceptional age, slowly increased reaching values comparable to adults at about 2 years (±6 months) of age. Instead, MAPK14 involved in the phosphorylation of S100A9 was fully active since birth also in preterm newborns.

For centuries, clinicians have used palpation to evaluate abdominal organs. After exploring almost all the different methods of interaction between x-rays, ultrasound, and magnetic fields on tissues, recent interest has focused on the evaluation of their mechanical properties.Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) is a recent, established ultrasound-based diagnostic technique that allows physicians to obtain a measure of the elastic properties of an organ. Shear wave velocity, obtained by the ARFI technique, depends on the elasticity of tissues.To date, there are studies on the ARFI technique applied to normal kidneys, chronic kidney diseases, and kidney transplants. Mechanical properties of the kidney, such as stiffness and deformity, depend on various conditions that alter its histology, in particular the amount of fibrosis in the renal parenchyma; urinary pressure and renal blood perfusion may be other important contributing factors. Unfortunately, the ARFI technique applied to native renal pathologies is still limited, and not all studies are comparable because they used different methods. Therefore, the results reported in recent literature encourage further improvement of this method and the drawing up of standardized guidelines of investigation.

Gestational diabetes mellitus, intrauterine growth restriction, and preeclamptic toxemia are common pregnancy complications that can have detrimental effects on morbidity and mortality of the mother and fetus as well as long-term health outcomes. Although they are distinct conditions, they may occur together and are often considered together as they share a common etiology of inadequate placental perfusion. The discovery and study of preventative treatments is hampered by a lack of effective screening tools to accurately identify women at the highest risk of disease. Metabolomics, an omic science, is the global quantitative assessment of endogenous metabolites within a biological system. It has proven to be a rapid approach in the identification of biomarkers predictive of the outcome of a pathological condition and the individual's response to a pharmacological treatment. We review the current and potential applications of metabolomics in maternal–fetal medicine, focusing on its use as a biomarker for great obstetrical syndromes diagnosis.

Cigarette smoking is an important modifiable cardiovascular risk factor associated with increased stiffness of the large arteries in adulthood. This study aimed to 1) evaluate arterial distensibility and echocardiographic measures in adolescent smokers before and after participation in a successful smoking cessation program and to 2) compare the findings obtained with data from a control population of healthy non-smokers.

The aim of this review is to update readers on the most recent publications concerning clinical metabolomics in developing infants.

Although the survival rate for preterm subjects has improved considerably, due to the progress in the field of perinatal medicine, preterm birth is frequently the cause underlying a series of notorious complications: morphological, neurological, ophthalmological, and renal alterations. In addition, it has recently been demonstrated how low gestational age and reduced foetal growth contribute towards an increased cardiovascular risk in preterm neonates. In fact, cardiovascular mortality is higher among former preterm adults than those born at term. This condition is referred to as cardiovascular perinatal programming. In the light of the above, an early, constant, and prolonged cardiological follow-up programme should be implemented in former preterm individuals. The aim of this paper was to perform a comprehensive literature review about two new emerging conditions predisposing to an increased cardiovascular risk: prematurity and low weight at birth.

Neonates can perceive pain, therefore an adequate analgesic therapy is a major issue not only from an ethical perspective but also to improve short- and long-term outcome. Fever during the neonatal period requires hospitalization and needs a treatment with an antipyretic agent because of the high risk of severe complications. Paracetamol (acetaminophen), the most commonly prescribed drug in paediatric patients for its analgesic and antipyretic effects, is the only agent recommended for use as an antipyretic in the newborn and has been recently proposed as a supplement therapy to opioids for postoperative analgesia. This article aims to give an updated overview on the use of paracetamol in newborns by presenting its pharmacological profile (mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics), recommendations for dosing regimens (oral or rectal administration: 25-30 mg/kg/day in preterm neonates of 30 weeks gestation, 45 mg/kg/day in preterm neonates of 34 weeks gestation, 60 mg/kg/day in term neonates; i.v. administration: indicatively 20-40 mg/kg/day depending on gestational age, with some differences among various guidelines) and clinical uses (more commonly as analgesic/antipyretic by oral or rectal route, but also i.v. in anaesthesia for postoperative analgesia and painful procedures in Neonatal Intensive Care Units). Moreover, drug tolerability is discussed in the light of its potential hepatotoxicity and the unique characteristics of the newborn patient. By analyzing the available literature and the dosing guidelines, a mismatch exists between the current clinical use of paracetamol and the recommendations, suggesting a cautious approach particularly in extremely preterm neonates.

Antiplatelet agents are administered in the treatment of a large number of adult diseases: coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, peripheral arterial disease, arrhythmias with their thromboembolic complications, primary and secondary prevention. In childhood however, the situation is substantially different. The lack of large interventional trials on the use of antiplatelet drugs in children, has led to greater uncertainty, and a less extensive use of these drugs, limited to fewer indications. The purpose of this article was to review the studies conducted to date on the use of antiplatelet agents in children. A concerted effort has been made to identify which are the shared therapeutic indications of this class of compounds, the recommended dose, the contraindications and the possible side effects. In brief, an attempt has been made to ascertain the interesting potential of these drugs which are so often neglected in children.

Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is a serious and potentially fatal condition, characterized by hypoxemia due to increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) with resultant shunting of pulmonary blood to the systemic circulation. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has been considered a revolutionary treatment of PPHN. Data show that the use of iNO has reduced the need of ECMO in neonates with severe PPHN, while in moderate PPHN, iNO administration has been associated with a significant decrease in ventilatory support and prevented progression to severe PPHN. Not all neonates respond to iNO therapy though, and phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors with their potent vasodilator properties have evolved as an alternative therapy or as an adjunct to the treatment of PPHN with iNO. There are ten families of PDE isoenzymes. PDE 5 is particularly prevalent in vascular smooth muscle (VSM) and PDE 5 inhibitors, such as sildenafil, have been used in clinical practice. This review provides a comprehensive account of existing data in the literature, from animal and clinical studies, on the use of sildenafil for the treatment of PPHN. Sildenafil may also have a role as a single mode of therapy, since in resource-limited settings the cost of iNO is a serious concern.

The ‘omics’ technologies represent analytical approaches that have a holistic view on molecules such as genes, transcripts, proteins and metabolites constituting a cell, tissue or organism. The profiling of genes, transcripts and proteins has been referred to as genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. Finally, there is the youngest and most rapidly increasing of the “omics” disciplines: metabolomics. Metabolomics appears to be a new, very useful tool in neonatology, especially in the fields of pharma-metabolomics and nutri- metabolomics. Since it appears to be predictive and preventive, it can be considered the ‘new clinical chemistry’ for personalized neonatal medicine. At present, the use of metabolomics in neonatology is still in the pioneering phase. In clinical practice, only a limited number of metabolites are routinely measured in the biofluids of newborns by conventional analytical methods to study the metabolic status of the organism. However, the management of sick or preterm newborns might be improved if more information on perinatal/neonatal maturational processes and their metabolic background were available. The aim of this review, after a general introduction on pharma-metabolomics, is to present the potential of NMR-based metabolomic analysis of newbom urine in neonatology in the field of pharmacology.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed in pregnancy to treat fever, pain and inflammation. Indications for chronic use of these agents during pregnancy are inflammatory bowel or chronic rheumatic diseases. Since the seventies, NSAIDs have been used as effective tocolytic agents: indomethacin has been the reference drug, delaying delivery for at least 48 hours and up to 7-10 days. Additionally, self-medication with NSAIDs is practiced by pregnant women. NSAIDs given to pregnant women cross the placenta and may cause embryo-fetal and neonatal adverse effects, depending on the type of agent, the dose and duration of therapy, the period of gestation, and the time elapsed between maternal NSAID administration and delivery. These effects derive from the action mechanisms of NSAIDs (mainly inhibition of prostanoid activity) and from the physiological changes in drug pharmacokinetics occurring during pregnancy. Increased risks of miscarriage and malformations are associated with NSAID use in early pregnancy. Conversely, exposure to NSAIDs after 30 weeks gestation is associated with an increased risk of premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus and oligohydramnios. Fetal and neonatal adverse effects affecting the brain, kidney, lung, skeleton, gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system have also been reported after prenatal exposure to NSAIDs. NSAIDs should be given in pregnancy only if the maternal benefits outweigh the potential fetal risks, at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration possible.

Evaluation of myocardial histological changes in an experimental animal model of neonatal hypoxia-reoxygenation.

Although the prophylactic administration of indomethacin in extremely low-birth weight infants reduces the frequency of patent ductus arteriosus and severe intraventricular hemorrhage, it does not appear to provide any long-term benefit in terms of survival without neurosensory and cognitive outcomes. Considering the increased drug-induced reduction in renal, intestinal, and cerebral blood flow, the use of prophylaxis cannot be routinely recommended in preterm neonates. However, a better understanding of the genetic background of each infant may allow for individualized prophylaxis using NSAIDs and metabolomics.

ABSTRACTBackground: even after successful surgical cure, Cushing's Syndrome (CS) may induce cardiovascular (CV) diseases including hypertension, or elicit onset of CV risk factors, such as obesity.Objectives: to evaluate some early markers of CV dysfunction in adolescent girls before and after successful surgical cure of CS; to compare after surgery data with those of a control group (C) of healthy young girlsMethods: 23 girls affected by CS were enrolled (range: 11-17 years; mean: 14.3 ± 1.7 years). Epicardial fat thickness (EFT), intima-media thickness (IMT), N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) were assessed; transthoracic echocardiogram coupled with Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) was performed.Results(CS before surgery vs. CS after surgery): EFT (p<0.05).(CS after surgery vs. C): EFT (p=0.0001); IMT (p=0.0001); NT-proBNP (p=0.0001). TDI: isovolumetric relaxation time (p=0.001); isovolumetric contraction time (p=0.001); myocardial performance index (p=0.001). Significant correlations: NT-proBNP with IRT ( r = 0.45, p = 0.026 ), ICT (r = 0.47, p = 0.028), and myocardial performance index (r = 0.51, p = 0.0032).Conclusions: important structural and functional modifications of heart and vessels are present in young female CS despite successful surgical cure, even in paediatric age. It underlines their significantly higher cardiovascular risk. Our findings confirm that EFT, IMT, NT-proBNP and TDI diastolic parameters, not previously tested in paediatric CS, are early markers of cardiovascular dysfunction. Because of its relationship with TDI, the assessment of NT-proBNP proves to be the best marker in detecting a cardiovascular dysfunction in this specific population.

This review aims to give an updated overview of the worldwide situation of off-label and unlicensed drug use in the paediatric field, also taking into account the safety of this kind of treatment. A Medline and Embase search was performed between 1990 and 2006 and a total of 52 studies were identified and included in the systematic review. From the authors’ analysis of the literature, the extent of paediatric unlicensed/off label use is higher in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units and oncology wards, compared with primary care. Moreover, among the nine studies reporting the contribution of an off-label/unlicensed drug use to the occurrence of adverse events, the percentage of unlicensed and/or off-label prescriptions involved in an adverse drug reaction ranged between 23 and 60%. To ensure that children are not exposed to unnecessary risks, controlled clinical trials are required. In addition, future research should be directed towards the identification of individual drugs that cause serious adverse drug reactions and lack product information.

In the last few years, there has been increasing pressure to use fluoroquinolones in paediatric patients, since these antibiotics offer the advantage of an oral treatment regimen on an out-patient basis. However, even although this class of antibiotics generally remains well-tolerated, the restriction of fluoroquinolone use in children on a compassionate basis, which derives from their potential to cause cartilage toxicity, limits the safety data in this population and suggests a cautious use. This review reports the data of the literature on the safety of fluoroquinolones in different districts, focusing on the side effects in children and drug interactions. Moreover, data available in the literature with regards to side effects in children are reported, with particular attention to their potential in arthropathy.

Intravascular catheters carry a significant risk of becoming colonized with bacteria and fungi and are important risk factors of septicemia in premature neonates. The study was undertaken to evaluate whether scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination of removed catheters can be useful in early diagnosis of plastic infection by Candida, providing information useful for initiation of an eventual therapy. The evolution of in the 28 catheters (umbilical or central) implanted in 24 newborns for prematurity was studied by SEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In 4 of 24 patients, SEM examination revealed the presence of Candidain form of yeast or hyphae. In one of these patients, TEM confirmed the presence of organisms. In each case, hemoculture and culture of the catheter itself confirmed the diagnosis. The study demonstrates that SEM can identify fungi in the biomaterials covering the catheter surface in a few hours, allowing an early diagnosis of plastic infection.
