The magnetostatic field of a finite solenoid with infinitely thin walls carrying a dc current oriented in the azimuthal direction is calculated everywhere in space in terms of complete elliptic integrals by direct integration of the Biot–Savart law. The solution is particularized near the solenoid axis and in the midplane perpendicular to the axis obtaining expressions that agree with some typical approximations that are made in introductory courses of electromagnetism or in the technical literature. The range of validity of these approximations has been studied comparing them with the obtained general expression.

The objective of this work is the evaluation of the risk of suffering a multipactor discharge within an RF electron gun photoinjector. Photoinjectors are a type of source for intense electron beams, which are the main electron source for synchrotron light sources, such as free-electron lasers. The analyzed device consists of 1.6 cells and it has been designed to operate at the ${S}$ -band. Besides, around the RF gun there is an emittance compensation solenoid, whose magnetic field prevents the growth of the electron beam emittance, and thus the degradation of the properties of the beam. The multipactor analysis is based on a set of numerical simulations by tracking the trajectories of the electron cloud in the cells of the device. To reach this aim, an in-house multipactor code was developed. Specifically, two different cases were explored: with the emittance compensation solenoid assumed to be off and with the emittance compensation solenoid in operation. For both the cases, multipactor simulations were carried out exploring different RF electric field amplitudes. Moreover, for a better understanding of the multipactor phenomenon, the resonant trajectories of the electrons and the growth rate of the electrons population are investigated.

High-Gradient accelerating cavities are one of the main research lines in the development of compact linear accelerators. However, the operation of such accelerating cavities is currently limited by non-linear electromagnetic effects that are intensified at high electric fields, such as RF breakdowns, dark currents and radiation. A novel normal-conducting High Gradient S-band Backward Travelling Wave accelerating cavity for medical application (v = 0.38c) has been designed and constructed at CERN with a design gradient of 50 MV/m. In this paper, the high-power performance studies of this novel design carried out at the IFIC high-power laboratory are presented, as well as the analysis of the conditioning parameters in combination with numerical simulations.

Although they have not yet been detected, axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) continue to maintain the interest (even increasingly so) of the rare-event searches community as viable candidates for the Dark Matter of the Universe but also as a solution for several other puzzles of astrophysics. Their property of coupling to photons has inspired different experimental methods for their detection, one of which is the helioscope technique. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is the most sensitive helioscope built up to date and has recently published part of the latest data taken with the magnet bores gradually filled with 3He, probing the mass range up to 1.17 eV. The International AXion Observatory (IAXO) is being proposed as a facility where different axion studies can be performed, with the primary goal to study axions coming from the Sun. Designed to maximize sensitivity, it will improve the levels reached by CAST by almost 5 orders of magnitude in signal detection, that is more than one order of magnitude in terms of gaγ. Here we will summarize the most important aspects of the helioscopes, and focus mainly on IAXO, based on the recent papers [1, 2].

In the paper an efficient and accurate method, based on the multimode-admittance-matrix representation and the theory of cavities, is proposed for the analysis of a six-port ‘cubic’ junction composed of the orthogonal intersection of three rectangular waveguides. Very simple closed-form analytical expressions are explicitly detailed for all matrix elements of this basic key building block. More general waveguide multiport junctions, composed of a central cubic junction with arbitrarily shaped waveguide access ports, are also studied using a segmentation procedure. To validate the theory, numerical results are first discussed for a standard rectangular waveguide six-port cross junction. Finally, the analysis method proposed is also successfully applied to H- and E-plane T-junctions whose side arms are waveguides with rounded corners.

An efficient method for analysing confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides is presented. Using elliptical coordinates, the differential Helmholtz equation is transformed into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem by means of the method of moments. The expressions of the vector mode functions for the full spectrum of these guides are constructed, including the TEM, TM and TE modes. The convergence of the method is very good, giving an efficient and accurate code. Comparisons with numerical results found in the technical literature validate the presented theory.

A numerical algorithm to analyze the plane-wave three-dimensional oblique incidence on a strip grating is presented. Electromagnetic field is decomposed into vector Floquet harmonics of the E-type and H-type modes. To impose boundary conditions on the incident, reflected and transmitted waves, two integral equations of Fredholm of first kind are obtained. These equations are solved numerically with the standard Galerkin procedure, and the convergence of the algorithm is examined numerically. Since the superficial current near the edges of a conducting strip have been taken into account, the computational algorithm shows a fast convergence. Results are compared with other numerical results available in the literature to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. Some numerical results are shown at normal and oblique incidence, to make clear the behaviour of the grids at different azimuth incidence angles.

The plane-wave-spectrum technique is applied to study the transmission of a three-dimensional beam through a dielectric slab. The electromagnetic beam radiated from an aperture antenna is represented by an angular spectrum of plane waves. The use of three different co-ordinate systems using rectangular co-ordinates allows a rigorous formulation to be obtained. The near field transmitted through a dielectric slab is obtained and compared with measurements.

Symmetrical Y-junctions in rectangular waveguides are commonly used components in microwave subsystems. The authors describe an alternative multimode equivalent network representation for this junction in terms of multimode admittance coupling matrices. The elements of the admittance coupling matrix are obtained as a summation of geometrical coefficients which are independent from either the frequency or the specific waveguide dimensions so that they need to be evaluated only once. The general formulations are described together with the detailed derivation for the E- and H-plane cases. Finally, comparisons between the authors' simulations and both measured and theoretical data are presented, fully validating the networks derived.

A brief discussion about absorbing boundary conditions is presented which focuses on the FDTD modelling of waveguide discontinuities. An accurate first-order ABC is developed and tested, and also second-order ABCs are designed and discussed, which are used with a nonmonochromatic excitation. Finally, these ABCs are used in the study of some common H-plane waveguide discontinuities: a waveguide-type dielectric filter and an open-ended flanged parallel plate waveguide.

El artículo se centra en la la cefalea súbita tras una punción lumbar. Se presenta el caso de una mujer de 33 años, diagnosticada de feto muerto por causa no determinada. La introducción de aire en la cavidad craneal provoca una distensión y aumenta la presión intracraneal. En este caso, la introducción de una anestesia por punción lumbar reaccionó como irritante.

A variable delay line for phased-array antennas based on a chirped fibre Bragg grating is demonstrated. The time delay of a microwave modulating signal is modified by scanning in wavelength a chirped grating. In this initial experiment, time delay variations up to 556 ps have been achieved using a grating of 0.4 nm bandwidth and 6 cm length and modulating in the frequency range 390 MHz–5.20 GHz.
