Chloroquine has been adopted in some countries such as Brazil as a Covid-19 prevention protocol; consequently, chloroquine has contaminated water resources in large quantities. In response to this menace, an adsorbent material from animal bone was used to remove chloroquine from contaminated water. Notably, no drug adsorption studies have been conducted in the past. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and zeta potential measurements that exhibited favorable characteristics for the adsorbent. In this study, it was determined that the optimal mass of the adsorbent was 0.02 g at pH 7. The kinetic study demonstrated that 300 min was sufficient to reach equilibrium, and the best fit was pseudo-second-order. The adsorption isotherms were fitted in the Langmuir model, obtaining a maximum adsorption capacity of 77.60 mg–1at a temperature of 298 K. The thermodynamic parameters demonstrated a spontaneous, exothermic, and reversible process. Briefly, the adsorbent used had the potential to remove emerging pollutants from the environment.

The development of probiotic formulations has attracted great attention of researchers and industrial community. Their beneficial effects have been demonstrated in human health, and in buccal cavity including prevention of gingivitis, periodontitis, dental caries, oral candidiasis, and immunomodulation. The development of mucoadhesive wafers as buccal systems is important to promote intimate contact between the probiotics and oral mucosa, as well as maintain the viability of anaerobic bacteria like Bifidobacterium bifidumBB12. The aim of this study was to develop wafers systems containing poloxamer 407, Carbopol 974 P®, probiotic microorganisms Bifidobacterium bifidumBB12 for oral cavity administration. Two concentrations of microorganisms were incorporated to the polymer blends and freeze-dried. The morphological, enumeration of bacteria and mechanical properties of the wafers with and without probiotic bacteria were examined. The most concentrated formulation demonstrated more difficulties in freeze-drying process and lower enumeration of B. bacteriumBB12. The wafers containing probiotic microorganisms (1:10) could be stored during 14 days with probiotic benefits. Their mechanical properties were suitable, because of improved cohesiveness, adhesion properties and firmness in comparison to formulations without probiotics. The wafers were suitable to carry probiotic microorganisms for 14 days and suitable mechanical properties for buccal application.

Chichá-do-cerrado (Sterculia StriataSt. Hil. et Naud) is a Brazilian native plant whose nuts have interesting nutritional value. However, the fruit shells (CH) have never been evaluated for potential uses. This study aimed to characterize the biochar (BC–CH) and the activated carbons synthesized by chemical (K–CH) and physical (C–CH) processes. The activated carbons were evaluated on metformin adsorption and treatment of a synthetic mixture. Pyrolysis increased the carbon content and the H/C ratio indicated higher aromatization for C–CH. BC–CH presented low surface area, which was increased mainly with KOH activation (1273.6 m2g−1). FTIR demonstrated the degradation of lignocellulosic compounds and zeta potential inferred a higher number of oxygenated groups for C–CH. Regarding the adsorption studies, the kinetics demonstrated an equilibrium time of 60 min and the isotherm resulted in a maximum experimental adsorption capacity of 33.75 and 45.50 mg L−1for C–CH and K–CH, respectively. Interestingly, C–CH presented the highest removal percentage of the synthetic mixture, indicating the role of Cu (II) interactions and synergistic effects. In summary, it was verified the potential of the adsorbents in wastewater treatment, and the importance of evaluating the composition of the aqueous matrix, which can alter the adsorption mechanisms.

Dyes are widely used industrially to make various products more attractive to consumers. However, this class of compounds is usually not removed by common effluent treatments, generating a pollutant load. In this context, this work aimed at the application of two samples of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPsFeO) obtained through a green synthesis method using two agroindustry residues: Cucurbita moschataleaves (NPsFeOA) and Beta vulgarisstalks (NPsFeOB), which were applied as adsorbent materials for the removal of tartrazine and bordeaux red dyes. The adsorbents were characterized using Uv–vis spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Synthesis of mixed NPsFeO containing goethite and maghemite with estimated diameter of 2 nm and 20 nm, respectively, were observed by diffraction peaks obtained in XRD. In the adsorption kinetics tests, equilibrium was reached after 1200 min for tartrazine and 240 min for bordeaux red when NPsFeOA was used as adsorbent; and after 180 min for tartrazine and 120 min for bordeaux red when using NPsFeOB. Moreover, NPsFeOB had the higher adsorption capacities, at 59.79 mg g–1for tartrazine and 59.98 mg g–1for bordeaux red. The kinetic model that best represented the adsorption data was pseudo-second order, in both cases. The Langmuir isotherm was the one that better applied to both adsorbents and adsorbates, and the thermodynamic parameters indicated a favorable and endothermic adsorption process.
