The nature of inter-group relations among prehistoric hunter-gatherers remains disputed, with arguments in favour and against the existence of warfare before the development of sedentary societies. Here we report on a case of inter-group violence towards a group of hunter-gatherers from Nataruk, west of Lake Turkana, which during the late Pleistocene/early Holocene period extended about 30 km beyond its present-day shore. Ten of the twelve articulated skeletons found at Nataruk show evidence of having died violently at the edge of a lagoon, into which some of the bodies fell. The remains from Nataruk are unique, preserved by the particular conditions of the lagoon with no evidence of deliberate burial. They offer a rare glimpse into the life and death of past foraging people, and evidence that warfare was part of the repertoire of inter-group relations among prehistoric hunter-gatherers.

Summary Basal thyroid hormone levels were measured in 68 women with liver cirrhosis (LC) of different etiology (alcoholicn=34, posthepatitic Bn=9, PBCn=5, cryptogeneticn=18, M. Wilsonn=2). In addition the rise of TSH after 400 µg TRH was measured in 23 women with LC and compared with the data obtained from 17 women of a control group. There was no difference of the median T4-concentrations (LC 8.0 µg/dl versus 7.2 µg/dl) but a significant correlation of T4 to the grade of decompensation of LC. In contrast of T4 there was a marked decrease of T3 in LC-patients (109 ng/dl versus 143 ng/dl) and a rise of reverse T3 (0.21 ng/ml versus 0.13 ng/ml). The decrease of T3 and rise of reverse T3 equally correlated to the severeness of LC. TBG concentrations fell according to the grade of decompensation of LC and T4/TBG-quotient exhibited no difference to the control data (0.51 both). Though basal thyroid hormones and TSH show euthyroidism the significant augmented TSH release after TRH (?-TSH 7.0 versus 3.2 µU/ml) indicate a status of latent hypothyroidism. In alcoholic cirrhosis the degree of TSH release was much higher than in non alcoholic cirrhosis. Estradiol and estrone levels correlated significantly negatively to T4, T3, estrone negatively to TBG and positively to reverse T3 but not to TSH and TSH release. Otherwise TSH release correlated positively to estradiol. The thyroid status in women with liver cirrhosis does not differ from the thyroid hormone profile found in men with cirrhosis.

Laboratory experiments and detailed investigations of natural fault gouge indicate that it is, in principle, possible to date the last movement of a fault by ESR. This paper gives a brief introduction to ESR dating and outlines the specific problems that have to be addressed before ESR can be established as a reliable technique for the dating of fault movements.

Abstract: It should, in principle, be possible to date a sample without determination of annual dose rate, when two ESR centers of different stability are present. The method assumes that the centers are independent and decay according to a first order process and that their concentration is far from saturation. The model is presented with emphasis on its inherent difficulties.

Abstract: Envestigations on the behaviour of the defect centres in calcites by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy /ESR/ have shown the occurrence of important interferences, which may have an impact on age determinations. These effects are produced by humic acids, sunlight exposure, grinding, instability of paramagnetic centres, measurement conditions, and possible pretreatment of the sample. The consequence of these interferences are discussed.

The classical region of the Holsteinian interglacial is in the vicinity of Hamburg and the Lower Elbe. It is defined on the basis of pollen and is clearly distinguishable from the Eemian interglacial (Hallik, 1960; Müller, 1974). The Holsteinian interglacial is represented by a sequence of sediments up to 100 m in thickness. These consist of limnic, fluvial, and marine beds and show a transgression up to the height of present sea-level.

Age data for about 660 speleothems and about 140 spring-deposited travertines were collected, including many unpublished results. These data were plotted as histograms and also as error-weighted frequency curves on a 350,000-yr scale. These plots clearly show periods of increased speleothem/travertine growth as well as times of cessation. The periods of most frequent speleothem growth were between approximately 130,000 and 90,000 yr ago and since about 15,000 yr ago. Such periods before 150,000 yr ago, however, cannot be yet recognized because of a lack of sufficient data and the associated uncertainties of dates in this age range. A comparison with the oxygen-isotope record of deep-sea core V28–:238 shows a clear relationship, indicating that terrestrial calcite formation is controlled by paleoclimatic fluctuations. The evident climatic stimulation of Quaternary calcite formation is readily explained geochemically and is substantiated by the obvious difference in speleothem/travertine growth as a function of geographic position.

Tham Khuyen Cave (Lang Son Province, northern Vietnam) is one of the more significant sites to yield fossil vertebrates in east Asia. During the mid-1960s, excavation in a suite of deposits produced important hominoid dental remains of middle Pleistocene age. We undertake more rigorous analyses of these sediments to understand the fluvial dynamics of Pleistocene cave infilling as they determine how skeletal elements accumulate within Tham Khuyen and other east Asian sites. Uranium/thorium series analysis of speleothems brackets the Pleistocene chronology for breaching, infilling, and exhuming the regional paleokarst. Clast analysis indicates sedimentary constituents, including hominoid teeth and cranial fragments accumulated from very short distances and under low fluvial energy. Electron spin resonance analysis of vertebrate tooth enamel and sediments shows that the main fossil-bearing suite (S1-S3) was deposited about 475 thousand years ago. Among the hominoid teeth excavated from S1-S3, some represent Homo erectus and Gigantopithecus blacki. Criteria are defined to differentiate these teeth from more numerous Pongo pygmaeus elements. The dated co-occurrence of Homo erectus and Gigantopithecus blacki at Tham Khuyen helps to establish the long co-existence of these two species throughout east Asia during the Early and Middle Pleistocene.

Summary The hormonal status of men with cirrhosis of the liver has been investigated in numerous studies. Little, however, is known about changes of sexual hormones in women afflicted by this disorder. In a study of 31 postmenopausal women (mean age 63±8 years) suffering from cirrhosis of various etiology (alcoholic,n=8; posthepatitic B,n=1; PBC,n=5; cryptogenetic,n=17) the blood levels of estradiol (E2), estrone (E1), androstenedione (A), testosterone (T) and basal and stimulated values of gonadotropins are reported and compared with the data obtained in an agematched control group (n=9). In cirrhosis a significant increase of the median E2 (28 vs 12 pg/ml,P<0.01) was found, whereas the changes of the blood levels of E1 (88 vs 76 pg/ml), A (63 vs 111 ng/dl), and T (0.30 vs 0.15 ng/ml) did not attain statistical significance in comparison to controls. Within the study group, however, a significant positive correlation with the degree of decompensation of cirrhosis (Childscore A–C) was observed for the steroid hormones measured. Thus, in subgroup C the hormone levels are higher than physiologically expected for postmenopausal women. On the other hand the median FSH (32 vs 48 mU/ml,P<0.05) is significantly lower in cirrhosis compared to controls with a trend to decreased values of LH. Very low levels of LH and FSH are found in decompensated cirrhosis. The decrease of LH and FSH can partly be explained by the rise of peripheral hormones (i.e. E2, E1, and in some cases T and A). The response of the gonadotropins to stimulation by 100 µg GnRh generally remains unimpaired. Only a few women with decompensated cirrhosis show a hormonal profile (low gonadotropins in spite of low sexual hormones, reduced stimulation after GnRh) that indicates a disturbance of hypophyseal regulation as a result of a central defect of possible hypothalamic origin.

We have obtained ESR ages on 18 teeth from archaeological levels AH16-AH27 exposed at the east profile in compartment E at Karaïn Cave. This sequence exhibits a transition in lithic assemblage from a Classic Charentian to a Karaïn (Zagros-type) Mousterian between levels AH27 and AH25, and two calcite-cemented soils at levels AH22 and AH16 which have been interpreted as climatic warm phases. Since we found no systematic increase in tooth ages with depth, we assigned this sequence a mean early uptake (EU) age of 108 ± 23 ka and mean linear uptake (LU) age of 121 ± 27 ka, on the basis of 37 subsamples from 16 teeth. In this site, the precision of individual tooth ages suffered little from the problems associated with uranium uptake. However, this advantage was offset due to uncertainties arising from the rather inhomogeneous nature of the enclosing strata which contained various sizes of limestone blocks with intervening sediment. This led to difficulties in ascribing a precise annual gamma radiation dose to individual teeth in such a "lumpy" gamma radiation field. Considerable scattering of the individual tooth ages occurred mainly because the annual gamma dose comprised greater than 50% of the total annual dose to the individual teeth. On the basis of the ESR dating results, we infer that deposition of the two different lithic assemblages and both the penultimate and the final climatic warm phases at Karaïn probably occurred during oxygen isotope stage 5. We also conclude that these lithic assemblages are significantly different than contemporaneous Levantine Mousterian industries which occur about 700 km to the southeast. Diese Senkung ist aber nicht so stark, daß man die Schwere des Shocks darauf zurückführen könnte.2.Die Art der Blutzuckersenkung nach Eiweißinjektion ist von der Blutzuckersenkung, die man nach Injektion von Guanidinderivaten und den sogenannten Glykokininen beobachtet, deutlich verschieden.3.Die Stärke der Blutzuckersenkung scheint bis zu einem gewissen Grade von der shockauslösenden Substanz abhängig zu sein und ist für die Schwere des Zustandes verwertbar.
