Gender issues have become increasingly compelling for both scholars and the general public in Estonia in the past twenty years. This can, for example, be seen in the March 2022 issue of the Estonian cultural magazine Vikerkaar which published a lengthy overview of the history of Estonian feminism (Karro 2022). The overview attempts to show the length of this history and its continuity under different political regimes, refreshing older surveys published by Vera Poska-Grünthal (1936) and Helmi Mäelo (1957 in Sweden, reprinted in Estonia in 1999). Such surveys list notable women and significant milestones, but do not usually delve into the nuances of gender history or feminist thought like in-depth case studies. This more nuanced work has been done in the past seven years by the gender studies research group within the Centre of Excellence in Estonian Studies. History is a projection of realities from the historian's lens and parameters. The popularity and acceptance of historical accounts depend much on hegemonic structures and knowledge. The Dalit community was marginalized within the Indian economic, social, and political historiography. Gradually, with the rise of Dalit consciousness, men--the better-positioned gender of the community--tried to express their vulnerabilities from a masculinist perspective. The literature written also projected women only as extensions of male protagonists. Though the traumas Dalit women have faced due to intersectional realities are separate from that of men, they could not find a place in early literature as complete entities, entitled to be acknowledged as such. The trade union movements also sidelined the issues of Dalit women laborers. To date, issues of Dalit women's property rights, longevity, education, and empowerment are largely androcentric, as the state's schemes and policies are majorly heteronormative and male centric. The reason why we need to keep invoking the past and history is to assert that the present condition of Dalit women has its roots in the past and their issues and voices continue to remain on the margins despite the rich social experiences they carry and represent. The Weimar Republic has an important place in the history of Germany democracy, but a recognition of the strength of German women's political cultures and their role in shaping the post-war political landscape has been elusive. Women's experiences in the First World War and Weimar Republic have been extensively discussed, but often in ways that threaten to erase women's political agency. Moreover, the seismic shift signalled by women's suffrage has not been foregrounded in accounts of democratic history, and women's roles in the revolution of 1918 have been largely overlooked. Taking a gender historical approach, this article makes women's political cultures visible in two arenas important for an understanding of the post-war era: women's suffrage and women's revolutionary activism. While the focus is on the German national context, it is important to note that German women's organisations were embedded in international and transnational network organisations campaigning for women's social, professional and civic rights, and that their political cultures developed in dialogue with and awareness of what was happening elsewhere in the world. The article describes a lesson plan for analyzing peritext in feminist young adult literature to empower students to critique the messages that are deemed important for them by the publishers.

Men and feminism is a contentious topic. In theoretical discussions as well as in previous studies, men and feminism have been described as an oxymoron, that being a man and a feminist is a border land position and that it entails experiences of so-called gender vertigo or gender limbo. Still, there are men who identify themselves as feminists and engage in feminist settings, parties and organizations. In this article, I aim to explore how masculinity is constructed and shaped within feminism. The article is based on qualitative interviews with nine young feminist men in Sweden. Using Sara Ahmed's queer phenomenology and the concepts of disorientation and reorientation, I analyse how the interviewees experience themselves as men and feminists and how they navigate within their feminist settings. The analysis illustrates that in contrast to previous research, the interviewees articulate an assuredness in their position as men and feminists. However, being a man and a feminist is still a somewhat disorienting position that promotes reflexive journeys through which the interviewees seek to elaborate a sensitive, perceptive and "softer" masculinity. Feminism can be seen as a way of doing masculinity, and the ways in which the interviewees (re)orient themselves in their feminist settings can be understood as processes of masculinity construction. These reorientations position the interviewees in the background of their feminist settings, where they carry out what I call political housekeeping and men-feminism. From this position, they also adopt a perspective of a theoretical as well as temporal distance and articulate themselves as actors in the history of feminism. Thus, the article highlights that feminist men can seek out a masculinity that is positioned in the background yet still experience themselves as subjects in the feminist struggle. This article compares Traversay's Les amours de Zémédare et Carina (1806) and Bergeaud's Stella (1859), which portray Caribbean landscapes altered by plantation economy. Examining these understudied novels through the lens of ecofeminism and eco-postcolonialism allows us to understand how Francophone colonial authors perceived the history of the land to be inseparable from socio-political history on both a regional and an international level, and also how the authors portray new Caribbean identities as dependent on landscape and the role of women. The article commemorates the centenary of the October 29, 1919 passing of the Women's Parliamentary Rights Act in New Zealand which gave women the right to stand for Parliament. Topics covered include pre-World War I attempts to remove barriers to women standing for Parliament, the context of the war, along with renewed feminist activism that made the 1919 Act a foregone conclusion and how the war enabled the rapid improvement in women's status and how the push for equality was halted post-war.

The author discusses the philosophy of Marxist Feminism in response to the views given by professors Jessica Lussier and David I. Backer about Marxist Feminist perspectives and educational research. Topics explored include the response of contemporary scholars to the research contributions of feminist scholars such as Madeleine Arnot and Rosemary Deem, the significant changes in the cultural attitudes toward gender, and the acknowledgment of sexual empowerment by feminist educational scholars.

Book Review Feminist Perspectives on Social Work Practice: The Intersecting Lives of Women in the 21st Century Edited by Shannon Butler- Mokoro & Laurie Grant Oxford University Press, New York, NY. 2018. The first two chapters are especially helpful to social work students who may be lacking knowledge of the feminist movement and want to deepen their understanding of most pertinent feminist theories to influence their social work practice. The 1915 women's suffrage issues of two periodicals, the Crisis, the NAACP magazine, and the Masses, an irreverent outlet for left-wing political eclecticism, compel a reassessment of what constitutes feminist radicalism. Given that a bedrock principle of 1910s US feminism was the valuing of all women and girls as human beings—then a radical claim—both periodicals circulated differently radical feminist messages in their suffrage issues. The Crisis insisted that black and white women were equally entitled to voting rights. The Masses promoted white women's emancipation and regarded women's suffrage as part of that crusade. Comparing the contents of both issues makes clear that considering race in gendered radicalism and gender in race radicalism are essential when examining suffrage media rhetoric. The 2016 American presidential election proved to be monumental for feminism, for it not only stood as an historic moment for women in politics but it also displayed how gaps within feminist approaches can be leveraged to advance the presidential candidate's agendas. This article analyzes how the three leading presidential candidates provided the nation with political platforms from which themes from varying waves of feminism emerged and prospered. While Sanders embraced third-wave feminism, Clinton's campaign exemplified a second and third-wave feminist hybrid approach and Trump's campaign incorporated some second-wave feminist perspectives. These arguments are supported by drawing parallels between each candidate's platforms, newspaper articles about the candidates, and feminist wave(s) they exemplified. This article reads two feminist literary works on gender violence, Maraini’sDonna in guerra(1975) and Schiavo’sMacellum(1979), through the lens of the political discourse that the Italian feminist movement developed in relation to the issue of rape in the late 1970s. Adopting the classification offered by Johan Galtung’s theory on direct, structural and cultural violence, as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s theorization on symbolic violence, this essay aims at pinpointing ideological differences between Maraini’s and Schiavo’s narratives. In particular, it argues that, ifDonna in guerradenounces direct and structural abuses on women, thus calling for institutional change,Macellumis an accusation against a cultural violence that cannot be fought with the tool of law. Maraini’s and Schiavo’s approaches, which mirror the standpoints of different factions of the movement of the time, are then considered in relation to Teresa de Lauretis’ ideas on the structure of feminist thought and politics, in order to illustrate that both approaches are in fact essential for the subversion of violent sexist dynamics. The paper investigates the literary treatment of historical women figures from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century as vehicles for the discussion of feminist issues in the East German literature of the 1970s and 1980s. In contrast to the SED's allegiance to a socialist feminist tradition derived from August Bebel and Clara Zetkin, focussing on social policy to promote women's emancipation, Christa Wolf's work on the women Romantics turns to the critique of patriarchal structures and the strengthening of female subjectivity through group solidarity. The closeness of this position to Western feminism, together with increasing interest within the West German academy in women writers hitherto sidelined within the classical literary canon, ensures Wolf's ascendancy as a feminist figurehead at this time. Other GDR writers, Sigrid Damm, Renate Feyl, and Brigitte Struzyk, also establish themselves in the West German book market by writing on women from the age of Goethe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When, in the second half of the nineteenth-century, the German women's movement took off, female activists/writers expressed a desire for their political work to initiate a generational project. The achievement of equal democratic rights for men and women was perceived to be a process in which the ‘democratic spirit’ was instilled in future generations through education and the provision of exceptional role models. The First Wave of the women's movement laid the ground, through their writing, campaigning, and petitioning, for the eventual success of obtaining women's suffrage and sending female, elected representatives to the Reichstag in 1919. My part of this article, drawing on the essays by Hedwig Dohm (1831–1919) analyses how the idea of women's political and social emancipation is phrased in the rhetoric of a generational project which will, in the short term, bring only slow changes to the status quo but which will enable future generations to build on the foundations of the (heterogeneous, but mostly bourgeoisie-based) first organised German women's movement, and which was intended to function as a generational repository of women's intellectual history. When, in the mid-2000s, a number of pop-feminist essayistic volumes appeared in Germany, their authors expressed the desire to reinvigorate feminism for a new generation of young women. Their texts focus in part on the continuing need to ensure equal democratic rights for young women in terms of equal pay, reproductive capacities and child care. Yet they simultaneously register their dissatisfaction with the legacy of the New Feminism and, more specifically, with the role models it produced. Although in their written interventions these new German pop-feminists often draw on the generic and rhetorical strategies of their feminist forebears, they employ the generational metaphor as a means of producing a narrative of ‘progress’ (Hemmings, 2011) which signifies a departure from previous feminist discourses and firmly ‘others’ their exponents. This type of narrative resonates troublingly with wider social and political narratives which situate feminism firmly in the past. Strikingly, German pop-feminist volumes share the deployment of this progress narrative with similar publications in Britain and the US. Yet the German volumes generally — and uniquely in relation to those three contexts — avoid textual engagement with the writing and protagonists of the first women's movement in Germany. This section of the article examines the feminist historiographical narratives told in pop-feminist volumes across all three contexts, enquiring after the local specificities of generational thinking, its caesurae, emphases and omissions, and revealing the broader transnational commonalities — and political implications — of feminist stories. This article takes up three overlapping sets of issues. The first set brings into sharper relief current debates about work-family balance and persistent gender inequality. The second set traces the emergence of women's studies as a scholarly discipline, examines a shift from women's studies to gender studies, and considers the reception of Western feminist discourse in Poland. The final set builds on the first two by addressing assumptions about the history of Polish women and their supposedly benighted sisters in the West, by questioning the presupposition that archives are passive depositories, and by exploring prospects for future work. This paper tries to tackle the problem of Henry Fielding's female characters by analyzing Lady Bellaston, one of the most interesting characters in Tom Jones, through a feminist grid. The second problem this paper deals with is Fielding's own relation to feminist claims and the extent to which he presaged feminism, in general, and the feminism of his century, in particular, taking into account that Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) was published almost half a century after Fielding's death ( 1754). The article examines the history of women's rights and women's emancipation as a part of the Socialist goal to create a classless society in East Germany during the Cold War. After briefly outlining theoretical feminist perspectives on the history of patriarchy, the author outlines differences and commonalities in the social and economic status of women between East and West Germany. She then discusses such aspects of the subject as distinctions between the public and private spheres and their effect on gender relations, competing understandings of gender equity and equality, and abortion rights.

This article examines the growth of gendered critical readings of medieval drama and looks at the changes that have occurred during the last decades. The journey moves from the placement of women in a position of obscurity towards the acceptance of the distinctive contribution made through their roles as audience members, back-stage helpers, and their representation on stage, albeit played by men. Given that women characters in medieval drama have often been interpreted as unruly, or shrewish, this article examines how the lens of feminism brought the role of women in medieval drama increased exposure: the shrews were placed in the limelight. Using the five phases of revisioning a feminist education developed in the 1980s by American educationalist, Peggy Mcintosh, the article analyses how each stage of feminist scholarship is linked to a particular set of ideological blueprints and demonstrates how the feminist scholarship of medieval drama replicates Mcintosh's five phases of revisioning. The article concludes by investigating why feminist revisionist studies of medieval drama occurred so late in the day, in comparison to contemporary scholarship being undertaken in other areas of performance studies [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent scholarship in the historiography of feminism has sought to challenge certain received histories of the movement which seem likely to obscure the social, intellectual and political complexity of the past, and indeed of the present. With good reason, such research has often preferred to focus on general intellectual currents rather than individual cases. This paper, however, focuses on some common constructions of one feminist in particular: philosopher and theologian Mary Daly (1928-2010). I hope to demonstrate that an analysis of one individual's positioning within feminism's history, as well as in relation to a conception of correct intellectual practice for women's studies, can prove useful for broader attempts to make more complex our conceptions of feminist chronology, as well as for scholarship seeking to interrogate the institutional factors feeding into such stories. Through readings of both Daly's own texts and those of her critics, this paper seeks to understand Daly's positioning both in a common history of feminist progression, and in a concomitant story about the type of intellectual work appropriate to women's studies. The central claim is that, in the constructions of Daly I examine, she is positioned as spatially external to the community and conversation of women's studies as academic discipline, as well as temporally behind that conversation. This positioning is not unilateral, but itself feeds off as well as into Daly's own self-positioning in relation to women's studies. The constructions of Daly I am figuring are therefore not impositions but rather works of communal construction to some extent, since both Daly and her critics are intellectual agents who produce, maintain and modify stories about feminist history as well as women's studies as discipline. An essay is presented on Japanese women's activism in the Pan-Pacific Women's Conference (PPWC) of August 1928, held in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Particular focus is given to Japanese women's strategies in linking their national feminist issues with the concerns of international women activists. According to the author, the PPWC provided Japanese women with an opportunity to explain conditions in Japan to Western women and to take on public roles that transcended gender boundaries in Japanese society.

The publication of Charlotte Roche's controversial novel Peuchigebiete, along with a wave of nonfiction popfemi- fist writings, prompted heated debates in 2008 among different generations of German feminists. Despite their attempts to call attention to historically persistent forms of sexism, popferninists quite emphatically distanced themselves from Alice Schwarzer, the face of German feminism for over thirty-five years. Yet casting themselves as rebels who break away from Schwarzer's second-wave feminism has necessitated that they suppress affinities and shared blind spots in order to underscore their os- tensibly less dogmatic, more fun approach. Fcuchtgebiete, Alexa Hennig von Lange's Relax and Elke Naters's Lügen depict generational conflicts in terms of fraught bonds between mothers and daughters, a dynamic which sheds light on these tensions among feminists. This essay high- lights the coexistence in each novel of a pop sensibility with aspects of contemporary and historical feminism. If the former feeds highly individual choices and signifying acts, the latter points to a collective identity and social movement. As much as the protagonists experience the chasm between these two polesthey also point to for- ward-thinking ways of re-conceptualizing feminism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
