Abstract

In this report, we carry out simulation and experimental investigations of directional coupler structures with different separations between the glycerin selectively infiltrated channel and silica core of a large mode area Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF). We assess their coupling characteristics and the corresponding temperature sensing capabilities. The temperature sensitivities of the glycerin selectively infiltrated channel adjacent to the silica core and two periods away from the silica core are −3.115 nm/°C and −2.332 nm/°C respectively. The glycerin selectively infiltrated channel three periods away from the silica core displays −107.8 pm/°C, an order of magnitude less temperature sensitive. The simulation results agree with the experimental results that there is a strong correlation between the coupling strength of the glycerin selectively infiltrated channel and the silica core, affecting its temperature response. 4. Temperature-insensitive and intensity-modulated embedded photonic-crystal-fiber modal-interferometer-based microdisplacement sensor

Abstract

We propose and demonstrate a temperature-insensitive and intensity-modulated embedded photonic-crystal-fiber (PCF) modal-interferometer-based microdisplacement sensor. The embedded PCF sensor has the structure of single-mode-fiber (SMF)–PCF–SMF, with a core offset at one splice joint. With the structure embedded in a cured carbon-fiber-composite-laminate-based simple-supported beam, the applied microdisplacement can be measured by monitoring its extinction ratio variation, while the extinction ratio variation is independent of the temperature variation and bending-induced strain. The sensitivity reaches 0.0024?dB/μm, the measurement resolution reaches 42?μm, and the dynamic measurement range is within the range of 0–200?Hz.

5. Core-offset hollow core photonic bandgap fiber-based intermodal interferometer for strain and temperature measurements

Abstract

A novel core-offset hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HCPBF) based intermodal interferometer is presented. It is fabricated by splicing a section of HCPBF between two single mode fibers with a slight core offset at one splice joint. The fabrication process only involves splicing and cleaving. Its applications for strain and temperature measurements are also demonstrated. Its strain and temperature sensitivities are −1.17?pm/με and 6.66?pm/°C, respectively.
