A new kind of adsorbent graphene oxide nanocomposite (GO–Fe 3 O 4) for removal of Chrysoidine Y was synthesized using the modified Hummers method and co-precipitation. The synthesized GO–Fe 3 O 4 was used as an adsorbent for the removal of Chrysoidine Y from aqueous solution. The effect of initial pH on the adsorption of Chrysoidine Y onto GO–Fe 3 O 4 has been investigated. The adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics also have been evaluated. The adsorption was strongly dependent on the pH of medium. The studies on the adsorption revealed that the adsorption process obeyed the Pseudo-second order kinetics model, and the rate-limiting step might be chemical sorption. And the Langmuir isotherm was applicable to describe the adsorption process. This hybrid showed a good performance for the removal of Chrysoidine Y from aqueous solution with an adsorption capacity of 344.83 mg g−1 at room temperature, and could be easily removed from solution using a hand-held magnet in 10 min. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was discussed and thermodynamic parameters were determined. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. Above all, the removal efficiency of GO–Fe 3 O 4 was still kept at 96.0% when the concentration of dye was 100 mg L−1 in polluted river. Addressing the secondary contamination associated with advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals (SR-AOPs) is the primary challenge in developing efficient cobalt-based catalysts. In this study, a simple two-step hydrothermal procedure was used to successfully prepare hollow sea urchin-like Co 3 O 4 @CuO/CuMoO 4 (CCM) polymetallic composite catalysts to rapid activate peroxymonosufalte (PMS) for phenanthrene (PHE) degradation with less amount of catalyst and PMS. Mo doping effectively enhanced the redox cycle between Co-Cu bimetals and could achieve 100% degradation of PHE within 10 min with a higher kinetic-rate constant (k = 0.402 min−1), it was 3.2 times higher than that of Co 3 O 4 @CuO (CoCu). Quenching experiments, XPS, and EPR confirmed that the incorporation of Mo facilitated CoOH+ formation and altered the production of reactive oxygen species, the oxidative degradation of PHE changed from a non-radical (1O 2) dominated to a combination of multiple reactive oxygen species (SO 4 •−, •OH, and 1O 2). The toxicity of the intermediates was evaluated using T.E.S.T. and lettuce germination experiments to verify the superior mineralization capacity of the CCM/PMS system for PHE degradation. Also, the efficiency and stability of the catalysts in actual wastewater treatment provided significant value for the practical application of SR-AOPs. Highlights • Triethanolamine modified CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were first synthesized by a facile one-step method. • This adsorbent can remove Cu (Ⅱ) and MB from solution quickly and efficiently. • It could remove about 85% of Cu (Ⅱ) from industrial wastewater and tap water. • The adsorbent can be reused at least 10 times without any significant variation. Abstract The novel triethanolamine modified magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (CFO@TEOA) as a magnetic nano-adsorbent have been first synthesized by a facile one-step method for the remove of Cu (II) and methylene blue. Owing to its high saturation magnetization (41.76 emu g−1), CFO@TEOA can be removed from aqueous solution in 1 min by permanent magnet. It exhibits effective adsorption to Cu (II) and methylene blue based on coordination and electrostatic attraction. Adsorption equilibrium can be achieved in 25 min for Cu (II) and 5 min for methylene blue, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from Langmuir isotherm are 396.0 mg g−1 for Cu (II) and 301.2 mg g−1 for methylene blue. Additionally, CFO@TEOA keeps its adsorption and desorption efficiencies constant over 10 cycles. More importantly, this nanoadsorbent could removal about 85% of Cu2+and over 98% of methylene blue from real wastewater. Abstract The hierarchically porous carbons were prepared from cellulose by a one-step method and studied as dye-adsorbents using chrysoidine as a model. With the increase of holding temperature, the prepared porous carbons had larger specific surface area and became more effective. Kinetic analysis revealed that adsorption kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and adsorption equilibrium could reach within 1 h. The studies on isotherm indicated that the adsorption process could be best described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacities was 598.8 mg g−1. Thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. Moreover, the porous carbon could effectively remove some other common dyes. Importantly, the prepared porous carbon was able to remove 98% of chrysoidine from polluted river water and its adsorption efficiency was inappreciably influenced by the water matrix. These results shown that the hierarchically porous carbons synthesized from biomass in this study had a wide application in water treatment. Mesangial cell (MC) proliferation is an important event in LN. Our previous studies have shown that extracellular High Mobility Group Box-1 protein (HMGB1) plays a critical role in pathophysiological mechanism of lupus nephritis (LN) and HMGB1 could induce MC proliferation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signal pathway activation on mesangial cell proliferation induced by HMGB1 and whether Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) plays an important role in this progress. The results showed that HMGB1 induced overexpression of p85, p110 and p-Akt in mouse mesangial cell (MMC) and increased the proliferative level of MMC cells. In addition, HMGB1 induced a physical interaction between TLR2 and p85. The TLR2 neutralization antibody and LY294002 both reduced the MMC proliferation levels induced by HMGB1 and also blocked the HMGB1-dependent phosphorylation of the Akt. Thus, HMGB1 increases interaction between TLR2 with p85 and in sequence phosphorylates Akt at ser473, thereafter mediates MMC proliferation, which contributed significantly to the pathophysiology of MMCs dysfunction. Mass concentrations of PM2.5 and 20 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 15 non-smoking residences in three residential buildings located in urban area of Guangzhou, China during the 15 continued clear days from November 1 to 15 in 2002. The indoor and outdoor concentrations of PM2.5 significantly exceeded the daily average concentration of proposed by USEPA, with ranges of 82.12– and 83.33–, respectively. The concentrations ranged from 14.18 to and 15.83 to in the indoor and outdoor samples, respectively, with 5–7-ring PAHs (from benzo[b]fluoranthene to coronene, –300) as the predominant contributors (79–90%). High positive correlations between indoor and outdoor concentrations of PM2.5 and PAHs, which were due to the high efficiency of indoor ventilation, indicated that concentrations of these indoor air pollutants were dominated by outdoor sources. The results of source identification indicated that vehicular emission was the major source of these pollutants with minor contributions from some non-traffic sources. The better linear regressions of BghiP than BaP to the total amount of the other 18 PAHs, as well as the more stable profiles of 11 carcinogenic PAHs with molecular weight from 228 to 300 relative to BghiP than to BbF, BkF, BeP, BaP, and IcdP indicated that BghiP might be used as a more valid indicator of PAHs in such heavily vehicle-polluted urban air as in Guangzhou. Site specifically, the highest concentration of PAHs was found in Building 1, next to the road with heavy traffic. Vertical distributions of outdoor and indoor PM2.5 and PAHs at Building 1 indicated that people breathing at different height were exposed to different concentrations of these health threatening air pollutants.
