Using the ARGUS detector at the storage ring DORIS II we have measured t decays into three charged mesons containingK
* mesons. Exploiting the good particle identification capabilities of the detector we have determined the following branching ratios: ,Br (t- ?K*0 K- vt )= (0.20±0.05±0.04)%, andBr (t- ?K*- X0 vt ) =(1.15±0.15-0.18 +0.13 )%.- Published

*+ ?D0 p+ )=(68.8±2.4±1.3)%, BR(D*+ ?D+ p0 )=(31.2±1.1±0.8)%, BR(D*+ ?D+ ?)<5.2% (90%CL), BR(D*0 ?D0 p0 )=(59.6±3.5±2.8)%, and BR(D*0 ?D0 ?)=(40.4±3.5±2.8)%, and the mass difference ?m0 =m(D*0 )-m(D0 )=(142.2±0.3±0.2)MeV/c2 .- Published

- Abstract
The partial decay width into electrons, Γ
ee , of the ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) resonances have been measured with the detector ARGUS at thee+ e− storage ring DORISII of DESY. Applying the formula of Kuraev and Fadin for the radiative corrections we find: Γee (ϒ(1S))= (1.32±0.04±0.03) keV and Γee (ϒ(2S))=(0.52±0.03±0.01) keV. The total decay width of the ϒ(4S) resonance and its partial width into electrons have been determined as well. Fitting the data with a generalized Breit-Wigner function with an energy dependent decay width Γ(s) and a mass shift functionm(s), we obtain the following resonance parameters: Γ(M2 )=(10.0±2.8±2.7) MeV, Γee =(0.28±0.05±0.01)keV andBee =(2.77±0.50±0.49)·10−5 . We argue that the disagrecment of this result with the world average originates from our more adequate parametrization of the observed ϒ(4S) resonance cross section.- Published

Using the ARGUS detector at thee
+ e- storage ring DORIS II, we have studied Cabibbo-suppressedD0 decay modes resulting in theK+ K- p+ p- final state and two-bodyD0 decay modes with a ? meson in the final state. TheBR(D0 ?KS 0 KS 0 p+ p- was measured for the first time. We also present a measurement of theD+ ?KS 0 KS 0 K+ branching ratio. Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, we have studied t decays with one or three charged particles in the final state, obtaining the following values for the branching ratios: BR(t
- ?e- )=(17.3±0.4±0.5)% BR(t- ?µ- )=(17.2±0.4±0.5)%,BR(t- ?p- vp )+BR(t- ?K- vp )=(11.7±0.6±0.8)% and BR(p- ?3-prong)=(13.3±0.3±0.8)%. These measurements confirm the present world averages with a precision, in each case, comparable to the error on the combination of all previous results.- Published

+ e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decaysD+ →K− K0 π+ π+ andDs + →K− K0 π+ π+ . The branching ratios were determined to be BR(D+ →K− K0 π+ π+ )=(1.0±0.5±0.3)% and BR(Ds + →K− K0 π+ π+ )/BR(Ds + →φπ+ )=1.2±0.2±0.2. These decays are found to proceed mostly via the decay channel, with BR(D+ → )=2.6±0.8±0.7)% and BR(Ds + → )/BR(Ds + →φπ+ )=1.5±0.4±0.4.- Published

The reactionγγ→π
+ π− π+ π− has been studied with the ARGUS detector. The rate in the invariant mass region below 1.8 GeV/c2 is found to be largely due toρ0 ρ0 production. A spin-parity analysis shows a dominance of the partial wave (JP ,Jz )=(2+ , 2) with a small admixture fromJP =0+ . The contribution of negative parity states is consistent with zero. The large ratio of cross sectionsσ(γγ→ρ0 ρ0 )/σ(γγ→ρ+ ρ− )≃4, and the dominance of theJP =2+ wave in the reactionγγ→ρ0 ρ0 is a signature consistent with the production of an exotic (I=2) resonance.- Published

0 and η production in continuum events and in direct decays of the Γ(1S) and Γ(2S) resonances. The decay ofB mesons into the baryonsp, ? and?
- has been studied. The measured inclusive branching ratios for these decays are Br(B?p X) =(8.2±0.5-1.0 +1.3 )%, Br(B??X)=(4.2±0.5±0.6)% and Br(B??- X)<0.51% at the 90% confidence level. In addition investigations onp , and? and? correlations were performed, yielding an approximately equal rate of protons and neutrons. From this one can derive a total baryonic branching ratio Br(B?baryons) of (7.6±1.4)%.- Published

Two-photon production of the exclusive final statesp +nπ (n=0, 1, 2, and 3) has been investigated using the ARGUS detector at thee
+ e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY. The reactionsγγ→p π andγγ→p π+ π− π0 have been observed for the first time, as have theΔ++ and baryons in the final statep π+ π− . No evidence was found forΔ++ production. Topological cross sections for two-photon production ofp ,p π0 ,p π+ π− andp π+ π− π0 , as well as the crosssection forγγ→Δ++ π+ π− +c.c., have been measured. Upper limits are given for the cross section forγγ→Δ0 ,γγ→Δ++ andγγ→Λ .- Published

- Abstract
Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring we have searched for radiative decays Υ(1S)→γX, whereX decays into two oppositely charged pions, kaons, or protons. Upper limits on branching fractions are presented. In the π
+ π- invariant mass region 290–570 MeV/c2 the upper limit obtained varies from 3 to 4.5×10−5 . These values are lower than the theoretical prediction of about 5×10−5 for Higgs production, which includes perturbative QCD radiative corrections to the Wilczek formula and the estimate Br(H0 →π+ π- ), accounting for Higgs coupling to gluons via heavy quark loops. Previous experimental results do not exclude the existence of a standard minimal Higgs in this mass region.- Published

- Abstract
Using the ARGUS detector at the e e storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied lepton energy spectra in τ decays. We present a "pseudo-rest-frame" technique in which the second τ in the event, decaying into a heavy hadronic system, is used as reference. This method allows for the first measurement of the Michel Parameter η in τ decays. We also determine the Michel Parameter ρ in τ → ev¯v decays with a precision comparable to the present world average. The measured values of the parameters ρ=0.735±0.036±0.020 and η=0.03±0.18±0.12 are in good agreement with standard V-A coupling at the τ-ν-W vertex.

- Abstract
The production ofD
S + mesons inB meson decays, and inq continuum events, has been studied with the ARGUS detector at thee+ e− storage ring DORIS II. In addition to the measurement of inclusiveDS + production in γ(4S)→B decays, all eight two-body decay modesB→DS (*) D(*) have been measured with branching ratios between 1% and 3%. By comparing our inclusive and exclusive results to predictions of heavy quark effective theory, a value of (267±28) MeV × [2.7%/BR(Ds + →φπ+ )]1/2 is obtained for the weak decay constant fDS (*) , averaged overDS + andDS *+ mesons.- Published

We have measured theR value in non-resonante
+ e- annihilation using the ARGUS detector at the storage ring DORIS II. At a centre-of-mass energy GeV the ratio of the hadronic cross-section to the µ-pair cross section in lowest order QED has been determined to beR=3.46±0.03±0.13. In addition, we have measured the charged-particle multiplicities in non-resonant hadron production at GeV just below theB threshold and in ? (4S) resonance decays. For the average charged-particle multiplicities in continuum events and ?(4S)?B decays we obtaincont =8.35±0.02±0.20 and?(4s) =10.81±0.05±0.23.- Published

- Abstract
Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS IIe
+ e− storage ring we have studied the three-pion hadronic final state in the decay τ- → π- π- π+ vτ . From about 7500 events we conclude that the three-pion system is dominated by theJP =1+ resonancea1 (1260) decaying preferentially via ρ0 π- . Our data restrict a possible ρπ contribution of three-pion states without intermediate resonances to less than 6% at 95% CL. Fitting a model by Isgur et al. to the data yields and . The second errors reflect the model dependence of the result. This is the currently most significant determination of thea1 resonance parameters. The ratio ofS- andD-wave amplitudes for the ρ0 π- intermediate state of thea1 − decay at the nominala1 − mass was found to beD/S=−0.11±0.02. Using thisD/S ratio we update our former measurement of the parity violating asymmetry parameter to 1.25±0.23±0.08 0.15 . The branching ratio of the decay τ- → π- π- π+ vτ is determined to be Br(τ- → π- π- π+ vτ )=(6.8±0.1±0.5)%.- Published

Exclusive semileptonicB decays with aD
*+ meson in the final state have been studied using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. The branching ratio for the decay , where ℓ- is eithere− or μ- , has been measured to be (5.2±0.5±0.6)%. A significant rate for the decay has been observed. From an angular analysis of the cascade the forward-backward asymmetryAFB and theD*+ polarization parameter α have been determined to beAFB =0.20±0.08±0.06 and α=1.1±0.4±0.2.- Published

- Abstract
An analysis of the decay τ
- →π- π0 vτ has been performed using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. The branching ratio has been determined to be Br(τ- →π- π0 vτ =(22.6±0.4±0.9)%. The shape of the π- π0 invariant mass spectrum is found to be in good agreement with the predictions obtained using the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis, suggesting that the π- π0 system is produced in aJP =1− state. An analysis of the measured decay angular distribution of the pions with respect to the flight direction of the π- π0 system demonstrates the vector nature of the coupling at the τvτ vertex. With the assumption of zerovτ mass thevτ spin has been shown to be .- Published

Using the ARGUS detector at thee
+ e- storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive production of p± ,K± ,Ks 0 and in multihadron events at 9.98 GeV and in direct decays of the ?(1S) meson, i.e. from quark and gluon fragmentation. The most pronounced difference is the rate of baryon production. The Lund Monte Carlo program gives a reasonable qualitative description, although it cannot reproduce our data in detail.- Published

- Abstract
Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e−storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed-strange meson which decays into D*+K0. Its mass is observed to be 2535.9±0.6±2.0 MeV/c2and its width to be less than 4.6 MeV/c2at the 90% confidence level. No structure is observed at this mass in the D+K0invariant mass spectrum, which suggests that an unnatural spin-parity is preferred.

- Abstract
We report on the first observation of Δ(1232)++and Δ(1232)++¯baryons in e+e−annihilation at energies around 10 GeV, using the ARGUS detector at DORIS II. The sum of the rates of Δ++and Δ++¯per hadronic event in the continuum is measured to be 0.040±0.008±0.006, and the rate in direct ϒ(1S) decays is 0.124±0.016±0.015. The momentum spectrum of Δ++baryons in direct ϒ(1S) decays has been measured.

+ e- storage ring DORIS II, flavour-dependent kaon production inB meson decays has been studied. Using the leptons as flavour tags, it has been possible to separately measure the multiplicities ofK+ ,K- andKs 0 in inclusiveB decays and in semileptonicB decays. The kaon production in semileptonicB decays was further used to estimate the ratio of charmed decays over all decays, and thus also the fraction of charmlessB decays.- Published

The production ofK
*+ (892),K*0 (892),ρ0 (770) andω(783) vector mesons inρ0 (770) events as well as in the gluonic Υ(1S) decays andρ0 (770) decays has been studied using the ARGUS detector. Combining these results with data on pseudoscalar meson, ϕ meson and baryon production collected with the same detector allow comprehensive studies of quark and gluon fragmentation. Model independent information ons quark and vector meson suppression (s/u=0.37±0.04,V/(V+P)π =0.21±0.04 andV/(V+P)K =0.34±0.03)) are derived. The data are compared with predictions from the models Jetset 7.3 and UCLA 7.31.- Published

Using the ARGUS detector at thee
+ e- storage ring DORIS II, we have measuredB decays into exclusive final states containing aD orD* meson plus several pions, or containing aJ/? or ?' meson plus a strange particle. Some of these channels have not been seen before, while others represent updated measurements of previous results. The branching ratios are compared with the predictions of the model of Bauer, Stech and Wirbel. Using the cleanest decay channels, the mass of the charged and neutralB meson are found to bemB - =(5280.5±1.0±2.0) MeV/c2 andmB 0 =(5279.6±0.7±2.0) MeV/c2 respectively, yielding a mass differencemB 0 -mB - =(-0.9±1.2±0.5) MeV/c2 .- Published

The production of charged kaon pairs in two-photon interactions has been studied with the ARGUS detector and the topological cross section has been measured. The ??-widths and interference parameters have been determined for the tensor mesonsf
2 (1270),a2 (1318) andf'2 (1525). The helicity structure assumed for the continuum contribution has a significant effect on the result. Upper limits have been obtained for the ??-widths of the glueball candidate statesf2 (1720) andX (2230).- Published

- Abstract
Upper limits on branching ratios for six neutrinoless leptonic, 16 semileptonic, two radiative-leptonic, two radiative-hadronic and three purely hadronic t decays have been determined. The results improve over previously published ones by about a factor of two. For the first time the lepton and baryon number violating decays and have been investigated. The 90% confidence level (CL) limits for the corresponding branching ratios amount to 2.9×10
-4 , 6.6×10-4 and 1.3×10-3 respectively.- Published

+ e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, a study ofB0 oscillations has been performed using three different techniques. Besides the standard dilepton method, charge correlations betweenD* mesons and one or two leptons have also been investigated. The mixing parameterr is determined to be (20.6±7.0)%.- Published

A search has been performed for rareB meson decays intoD
s - mesons arising fromb?u transitions,W exchange modes,B+ annihilation processes, and decays where theDs + is not produced via aW?c quark pair coupling, using the ARGUS detector operating on the ?(4S) resonance at thee+ e- storage ring DORIS II. Upper limits for individual decay modes are obtained. In addition, from a study ofDs + l- correlations an upper limit of BR (B?Ds + l- X) (90% CL) is determined.- Published

Using the detector ARGUS at thee
+ e− storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, and protons from decays of the υ(4S) meson. The kaon spectra have been measured in two independent ways, by coherently exploiting the detector's particle identification capabilities, and by detecting decays in-flight. The extracted mean multiplicities for charged hadrons are 7.17±0.05±0.14 pions, 1.56±0.03±0.05 kaons and 0.110±0.010±0.007 protons per υ(4S) decay, where pions and protons fromKs o and Δ decays have been subtracted.- Published

The inclusive production cross sections of ?' (958) andf
o (975) mesons are measured ine+ e- annihilation in the nonresonant continuum around GeV and in decays of the ? resonances using the ARGUS detector. For ?' (958) mesons, a production ratio of ?' (958)/?dir =0.35±0.24, with ?dir =?-BR(?'??X)·?', is determined in direct ?(1S) decays, which can be partially explained by the pseudoscalar singlet/octet mixing. Forfo (975) production, we obtain a production ratio offo (975)/p(770)°=0.17±0.030 in direct ?(1S) decays. In its production features, thefo (975) behaves like an ordinary meson, though aK molecule nature cannot be excluded. The substantial production yield of thefo (975) meson demonstrates the important effect of feeddown from mesons beyond the basic multiples on pseudoscalar and vector meson production.- Published

The production of η-mesons in τ-decays has been studied with the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. τ
+ τ− events were selected by their characteristic 1-versus-3 charged particle topology. The π+ π− invariant mass distribution was used to search for evidence of η production in τ-decays. No signal was observed, leading to upper limits at 95% CL of Br(τ− →ηπ− π0 vτ )<1.1%, Br(τ− →ηηπ− vτ )<0.8%, Br(τ− →ηηπ− π0 vτ )<0.9% and Br(τ− →ηπ− π0 π0 vτ )<1.2%. A search for the decay τ− →ηπ− vτ , where the π0 from the decay η→π+ π− π0 is also reconstructed, yield an upper limit at 95% CL of Br(τ− →ηπ− vτ )<0.9%. In addition, the inclusive value (1.65±0.3±0.2)% for Br(τ− →ωX− vτ ) follows from this analysis.- Published

Using the ARGUS detector at thee
+ e- storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have measured the inclusive production ofD0 ,D+ andD* (2010)+ mesons inB decays and in nonresonante+ e- annihilation around 10.6 GeV. The inclusive branching ratios forB decays toD0 ,D+ andD*+ mesons are found to be (52.2±8.2±3.5)%, (27.2±6.3±3.5)% and (34.8±6.0±3.5)% respectively. Thus,D0 andD+ production account for about 70% of the charm produced inB decays, neglectingb?u contributions to the total width. The production cross sections and momentum spectra for continuume+ e- annihilation are also presented.- Published

The production ofD
* (2010)+ andJ/ψ mesons and prompt leptons has been investigated ine+ e− interactions at the Ψ(1S) resonance energy. The data were collected at the storage ring DORIS II at DESY with the ARGUS detector. We obtain upper limits of BRdir (ϒ (1S)→D* (2010)± +X)<0.019 (forxp >0.2) and BRdir (ϒ(1S)→J/ψ+X)<0.68×10−3 , both at the 90% confidence level. From the prompt lepton analysis, a model dependent limit of BRdir (ϒ(1S)→Yc +X)<0.034 (Yc denoting a charm-containing particle) is derived.- Published

- Abstract
Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e−storage ring DORIS II at DESY we have measured the parameters of a charmed strange meson D*s2+(2573) decaying into D0K+. The mass of this state was found to be (2574.5±3.3±1.6) MeV/c2. The measured value of its width is (10.4±8.3±3.0) MeV and the product of the production cross section and branching ratio for this channel was determined to be (10.6±4.2−1.2+2.3) pb.

The correlations betweenp,,andbaryons have been measured ine+e−continuum events and in direct Ψ decays. The observed correlations exclude the production of point-like diquark-antidiquark pairs as the dominant source of baryons. Information concerning angular momentum compensation follows from the observedcorrelation.
