Building energy and occupant health concerns have increased the desire for variable, dynamic indoors and hence the interest in comfort of non-uniform and/or transient thermal conditions. An extended thermal comfort field study in the Hermitage Amsterdam museum afforded a unique opportunity to analyse evolving subjective perception of occupants, upon their moving indoors, over the time they spent in the museum. Visitors’ responses were grouped depending on how long they had been inside when they filled up the survey. The mean thermal sensation vote of each time group bore a strong correlation with their average time duration. For visitors who had been inside for 20 min or less, the thermal sensation vote had a significant relation with the outdoor temperature but not the indoor temperature. As visitors spent longer indoors, percentage of them feeling warm decreased and percentage of neutral or cool feeling increased. In tandem, the percentage of visitors preferring to be warmer also increased with time. Gender based differences in thermal sensation and preference also had a gradual and logical evolution with time. In an evidence of alliesthesial response, all the visitors inside for 20 min or less, accepted their thermal environment. The overall evidence suggests that visitor’s subjective perception of the thermal environment undergoes a distinct evolution during their first hour indoors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hermit posed a challenge to a medieval Church that emphasized rule, order, and discipline since oversight of their life could be virtually non-existent. The writings of Richard Rolle, hermit, negotiates the space between Foucauldian exomolgesis and exoagouresis as Rolle strove to articulate the identity of the hermit without any kind of church endorsement. As well, he forged his life out of a struggle with concepts of medieval sin, specifically Pride, which placed him in a queer position in terms of relationships with his surrounding community. His way of life was highly influential in his local community, however, and, through manuscript dissemination, beyond. Because he experienced mystical visions without church oversight, his eremitic life and example inspired a movement toward lay, affective piety in the later Middle Ages. The hermit, in his case, challenges the medieval Church's hierarchy in that hermits practice a form of living at a local level, placing them in dangerous, sometimes heretical, positions that force the Church to either absorb their practices or suppress them. Zhou Dunyi showed his dilemma in life in his poems. On the one hand, he was aggressive in this society and in settling people's lives. Although he made many stunning achievements, great limitations bumped him. He was deeply disappointed about people's pursuit of fame and fortune, revealing a Confucian scholar's sadness about life. On the other hand, he escaped from this society, put aside mundane trifles, and returned to nature. He made a sightseeing tour, watched the Taoism holy land. He repeatedly revealed the meaning of the Hermitage and was in pursuit of his liberation. The article discusses the hermitages belonged to Roman noble families in Italy for private retreats among their families in the 17th century. It states that hermitages normally takes the form of a folly, a small building standing in a secluded area of the park where they could take their tea or spend time alone in the book. It says that these buildings are considered to be the offspring of an increasing interest in the anchorite lifestyle from the Middle Ages onwards, which was then served a new function in the social life of aristocracy in the 18th century. It notes that the earliest commissioner of such hermitages was Cardinal Flavio I Chigi, which had constructed three romitorii across Rome.
