Abstract

The article presents an examination into the racial political conditions of the U.S through the example of Maryland in its statewide office elections of 2002 and 2006. Details are given outlining the circumstances in both elections where an African American lieutenant governor was appointed and commentary is offered regarding its social-political significance. Specific details of the victories of Anthony G. Brown and Michael S. Steele are provided. The author hypothesizes that the presence of an African American politician on the statewide ticket promoted action within the swing-voter segment rather than the African American voter block.
