As the rapid increasing demand for electrical energy in the world, the research on electrical energy storage becomes urgent and crucial, especially for these ones with the features of cost-effectiveness, high safety and outstanding performance. Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) are regarded as environmentally friendly, safe, reliable, and promising devices for electrochemical energy storage systems. However, a variety of challenges such as zinc dendrite formation, corrosion and hydrogen evolution must be addressed for the practical, widespread application of AZIBs. Recently, there has been notable interest in utilizing renewable, biodegradable, and cost-effective lignocellulosic materials to address these challenges, as they have the potential to significantly improve the electrochemical performance of AZIBs. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and systematic summary, as well as a gap in theoretical analysis, on the role of lignocellulosic materials in improving AZIBs performance. The present review covers the development, concept, advantages, and challenges of AZIBs. The most recent advancements and progress on the lignocellulosic materials (including cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses) as electrodes, electrolytes and separators for AZIBs applications are summarized. A perspective on existing challenges, potential solutions, and promising prospects of lignocellulosic materials is outlined, aiming to provide the research community with essential technical insights that could drive the commercialization of green and sustainable lignocellulosic materials in high-performance AZIBs.

Eucalyptus residues from pulp mill were pretreated with aqueous ammonia soaking (AAS) method to improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. The optimized condition of AAS was obtained by response surface methodology. Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide was introduced into the AAS system to modify the AAS pretreatment (AASP). The results showed that a fermentable sugar yield of 64.96 % was obtained when the eucalypt fibers were pretreated at the optimal conditions, with 80 % of ammonia (w/w) for 11 h and keeping the temperature at 90 °C. In further research it was found that the addition of H2O2to the AAS could improve the pretreatment efficiency. The delignification rate and enzymatic digestibility were increased to 64.49 % and 73.85 %, respectively, with 5 % of hydrogen peroxide being used. FTIR analysis indicated that most syringyl and guaiacyl lignin and a trace amount of xylan were degraded and dissolved during the AAS and AASP pretreatments. The CrI of the raw material was increased after AAS and AASP pretreatments, which was attributed to the removal of amorphous portion. SEM images showed that microfibers were separated and explored from the initial fiber structure after AAS pretreatment, and the AASP method could improve the destructiveness of the fiber surface.

A headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) method is developed for determination of formic acid (FA) and acetic acid (AA) in biomass hydrolysate. The method is based on the “in-vial” derivatization reaction of alcohols and acids. NaHSO 4 /ethanol is selected as the preferred derivatization reagent. The method has a reproducibility of RSD <0.87% and recovery of 97.1%–103.1%. The limits of the quantification were 2.02 and 2.38 mg/L for FA and AA, respectively. The GC analysis time only required 12.4 min. The method is rapid, sensitive and suitable for measuring FA and AA in the multifarious biomass hydrolysates in pulping and biorefinery industries. Effects of four different kinds of industrial grade MgO as one alkali source in the alkaline peroxide bleaching of poplar chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) were investigated. The particle size and activity of the MgO played the most important role in the improvement of optical and strength properties of the bleached CTMP. At a 25% substitution percentage of MgO for NaOH, a 77.4% ISO brightness and the optimal tensile index of the bleached CTMP could be obtained. When industrial grade MgO was applied, appropriate increase in Na 2 SiO 3 dosage and pulp consistency could improve the brightness and strength properties of the bleached CTMP. Abstract: The surface infrared spectra of coated paper with different levels of calcium carbonate and SB-latex in the coating layer were measured using ATR-FTIR. The relations between different levels of CaCO3 and SB-latex and their respective characteristic peak areas were then established. The results show that the general regression neural network (GRNN) model can be used to estimate the CaCO3 and SB-latex contents in coatings of coated papers. The maximum errors for calcium carbonate and SB-latex were only 3.32% and 3.39%, respectively, and occurred under conditions that are at the extreme of what might be encountered in an actual production facility. Photocatalytic degrading pollutants driven by visible-light irradiation has attracted tremendous attention. One strategy of preparing carbonized cellulose nanofibrils/Ti3C2TxMXene/g-C3N4(CMCN) as a photocatalyst was developed. The as-prepared CMCN was comprehensively characterized in terms of the chemical composition, chemical and crystal structure, morphology, and photoelectrochemical properties. The CMCN was explored as a photocatalyst and exhibited good photocatalytic performance in degrading MB (96.5%), RhB (95.4%), and TC (86.5%) under visible-light conditions. In addition, the CMCN as a photocatalyst exhibited good reusability and stability. It is found that the incorporation of cellulose nanofibrils provided a high carbon content, a high porosity, and a large specific surface area, enhanced the electron transfer, improved the photocatalytic performance, and ensured a semiconductor with a high stability. It is believed that this study would provide an effective approach to preparing a photocatalyst and broaden the potential application of cellulose nanofibrils in photocatalysis.
