An essay is presented which explores the history of communication programs in Latin America. It explores the formation of the Latin American community for communication study as well as the significant contributions of scholars such as Jesús Martín-Barbero and José Marques de Melo. It outlines the evolution of various communication institutions and suggests the importance of eliminating self-criticism in communication programs to strengthen its academic institutions.
