In the past decades, municipal solid waste (MSW) has generally been recognized as a substance that poses risks to human health and the ecosystem. With the emergence of the sustainable idea, MSW began to be recognized as a renewable resource and technological methods were used to make MSW as a resource utilization potential (RUP) source. SDGs realization relies on MSW's sustainable management. However, how the MSW's RUP affects to SDGs and how the two are coupled still needs to be explored. In this study, we took China, the largest MSW producer in developing countries, as an example. First, we selected 17 SDG indicators (including 83 nested indicators) and assessed China's SDG progress from 2005 to 2021 based on the SDG weighting calculation method. Regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were then used to explore the direct and indirect impacts of MSW's RUP on the SDGs. Finally, a counterfactual analysis was used to determine the regional heterogeneity of the impact of MSW's RUP on SDGs. The results show that China made greater progress in its SDG scores overall between 2005 and 2021, with particularly strong progress in SDG1 (poverty eradication) and SDG3 (healthy living). The MSW's RUP contributes positively to SDGs 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 17 (economy, health, water, industry, community, and global partnerships). The response of SDGs 2, 7, and 16 (zero hunger, energy, and justice) to MSW's RUP showed a threshold when the MSW's RUP value was 0.3 GJ. The MSW's RUP has a negative impact on SDG13 and SDG15 (climate change and ecosystems). Regional heterogeneity exists in the relationship between MSW's RUPs and the SDGs, therefore the promotion of MSW's RUPs is targeted to different provinces. The MSW's RUP provides significant potential for improvement in energy production and material production, and adherence to managing MSW using a sustainable mindset will contribute to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. Waste-to-energy (WtE) technology is at the forefront of low-carbon municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment. MSW has been favoured by researchers in recent years due to its high potential to dispose of resources with WtE technology, which contributes to the carbon neutrality goal. However, there is a lack of research that integrates MSW WtE treatment from a global perspective and explores its future direction. Bibliometric methods are widely used because of their advantages in qualitative and quantitative literature information analysis. A comprehensive search was conducted in the Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection database, covering the period from 1990–2022, resulting in the collection of 702 articles. Subsequently, bibliometric software such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix, were jointly employed for co-occurrence, co-citation, and cluster analyses, providing an in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the research hotspots and development trends of WtE technology for MSW treatment. The research findings indicate a rapid growth in studies on carbon emission reduction through WtE technology for MSW treatment since 2015, with these related articles accounting for 50% of articles. Globally, China, the United States, Italy, and other countries were active research regions, with Chinese research institutions making the largest contributions. However, contributions from developing countries are limited. Furthermore, this study systematically elaborates on the research hotspots in this field. Finally, this study identified some frontier research hotspots and directions. Research on WtE technology primarily focuses on technological methods and policy management, particularly from the carbon neutrality perspective, emphasis WtE technology sustainability in reducing carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality goals. Promoting the use of assisted decision-making models in the MSW management process, and focusing on the conversion of food waste into valuable energy. It is hoped that these research directions will provide new ideas for the balanced and rapid development of WtE technology. • First bibliometric of current research on MSW WtE technologies from carbon neutral perspective. • Summarizes the five categories of research hotspots that currently exist in MSW WtE technologies. • Presents future research directions and themes for WtE technologies in MSW. Inspired by the mussel adhesion protein, dopamine was used to prepare polydopamine (PDA)-coated polyurethane sponge (PDA-PUS) via self-polymerization reaction. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were grafted with γ -aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The new organic-inorganic hybrid adsorption material (HNTs@PUS) was fabricated by covalent link of APTES-grafted HNTs and PDA-PUS through Schiff base reaction/Michael addition. The as-prepared HNTs@PUS showed much higher mechanical stability and compressive property than polyurethane sponge (PUS). HNTs@PUS had 7.7, 7.1, 1.7 and 8.5 times adsorption capacity of PUS for Congo red (CR), Methyl orange (MO), Rhodamine 6 G (R6G) and heavy metal ion Cr(VI), respectively. HNTs@PUS had a fast adsorption rate and most of CR, MO, R6G and Cr(VI) were adsorbed by HNTs@PUS within 20 min. In addition, HNTs@PUS maintained 70.3%, 66.5%, 67.3% and 77.4% of its adsorption capacity for CR, MO, R6G and Cr(VI), respectively, after 5 cycles of regeneration. HNTs@PUS could be easily recovered to avoid secondary contamination. Besides, using HNTs@PUS as adsorbents, a continuous flow adsorption device was developed, through which anionic and cationic dyes and heavy metal ion could be continuously and effectively removed from the flowing solution. These results demonstrated that HNTs@PUS had potentially ideal attributes for use as adsorbents in the ultrafast, high efficiency and large-scale removal of anionic and cationic dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewaters. The fabrication strategy not only solved the problem of the poor recyclability and low permeability of HNTs, but also greatly improved the adsorption capacity of PUS, which might accelerate the application of natural "green" HNTs in wastewater treatment. A new sediment P release risk index (SPRRI) for "in-situ" phosphorus (P) release risk in lake sediment, is developed based on diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique, DGT induced flux in sediments (DIFS) model and sediment properties. SPRRI includes three sub-indexes, which contain (1) the labile P pool size, (2) resupply constant (r) and desorption rate (Dspt rate) for P transfer and (3) the molar ratio between iron (Fe) in sequential extraction for sediment P by bicarbonate-dithionite (BD) and aluminum (Al) by NaOH (at 25 °C), i.e. BD(Fe)/Al[NaOH25] in sediment solid. The first sub-index considers P release from (i) sediment with NH 4 Cl-P+BD-P pool, i.e. the loosely sorbed P (NH 4 Cl-P) plus iron associated P (BD-P), or (ii) sediment with NH 4 Cl-P pool, respectively. The second and third sub-indexes reflect kinetic P desorption and resupply ability of solid phase, and the effect of P sequestration by Al hydroxide on P release, in turn. The inner relationship between SPRRI and sub-indexes, and their effects on P release risk are elucidated. SPRRI can be used to evaluate sediment P reactivity by five release risk ranks. For Lake Dianchi (China), P transfer dynamics, labile P pool, resupply ability and Al-P in sediment, and "external P-loading" control and affect P release risk in different regions, which is reflected by the spatial distribution map for SPRRI. The present SPRRI can be applied for lakes with (1) pH range varying from moderate acidity to weak alkalinity in waterbody and (2) NH 4 Cl-P or NH 4 Cl-P+BD-P pool in sediment solid.
