Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) is a major complication of sepsis. SET and MYND domain containing 1 (SMYD1) has central importance in heart development, and its role in SIC has not been identified. Herein, we found that the expression of SMYD1 was downregulated in myocardial tissues of SIC patients (from GEO database: GSE79962) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced SIC rats, and LPS-induced H9c2 cardiomyocytes. We used LPS-stimulated H9c2 cells that mimic sepsis in vitro to explore the function of SMYD1 in SIC. MTT assay, LDH and CK-MB release assay, flow cytometry, and ELISA assay showed that SMYD1 overexpression enhanced cell viability, alleviated cell injury, impeded apoptosis, and reduced the level of proinflammatory factors and NF-κB activation under the condition of LPS stimulation. Moreover, SMYD1 exerted protective effect on H9c2 cells stimulated with LPS through relieving endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. This article presents the development of a knitted flexible sensor, which is embedded into a seamless garment, for monitoring health condition. The sensor is designed as an elastic weft-knitted plain structure, where the conductive silver-plating filament yarn is used for breathing signal collection and the spandex core-spun yarn is used to ensure good attachment of the garment to human body. The breathing amplitude and breathing frequency are obtained from the variations in sensor resistance. The sensor can measure various kinds of breathing conditions, such as normal breathing, slow breathing, fast breathing, and shallow breathing. The results are in reasonable agreement with the actual condition. Such kind of flexible sensors have the advantages of wearable and comfort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CuS nanoplate films were synthesized on FTO conducting glass substrates via a facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MHT) route and applied directly as a low-cost and high-efficiency counter electrode (CE) for liquid-junction quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSC). The two-dimensional structure of nanoplate provide high surface area for more active catalytic sites and easy accessibility for polysulfide electrolyte, which leads to the remarkable decrease in charge transfer resistance and the enhancement of catalytic activity of CE. As a result, the liquid-junction QDSSC assembled with the prepared CuS-2 CE achieves maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.97%, which is superior than that of CuS fabricated by conventional chemical bath deposition method based cell (PCE 4.06%) and the 100 nm thin sputtered Pt/FTO CE based cell (PCE 3.08%). Furthermore, the prepared CuS exhibits highly chemical stability in polysulfide electrolyte, resulting in reproducible performance. These results show the potential application of MHT synthetic method in preparing metal chalcogenide CE for high-performance liquid-junction QDSSC in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In current accelerated bridge construction, grouted sleeve connections are widely used to connect bridge substructures, such as prefabricated piers and abutments. Grouting material age is the main factor affecting the mechanical properties of the sleeve connections, which in turn affects the efficiency of the accelerated bridge construction. On the basis of varyingly aged grout specimens, this article presented an experimental test regarding the influence of grout age on the mechanical properties of grouted sleeve connections. The specimens were loaded on the universal testing machine, and their interior failure mode was analyzed using industrial Computed Tomography (CT) detecting technology, which is a method of examing structures by scanning X rays. The results revealed that the bearing capacity of the 1-day-old grouted sleeve connection can reach the yield strength of the connection bar. After 14 days, the sleeve's connection strength remained basically stabilized. Moreover, the failure of bonding interface between the bar and the grouting material mainly occurred in grouted sleeve connections. Based on the measured load-displacement data before the bar yield, model parameters related to grout age and the stress-slip model of the bonding interface between bar and the grouting material are presented, which can guide the mechanical analysis and the design of grouted sleeve connections.
