4. Editorial Commentary: Meniscal Cartilage Suture in the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructed Knee; To Absorb or Not to Absorb: That Is the Question.

Abstract

When considering repair of the meniscal cartilages of the knee, the indications for repair must be carefully considered. The morphology of the tear, the zone of injury, and likely vascularity have an impact on patient selection. Patient factors, chronicity of tear, medial or lateral tear, and tear complexity all have a bearing on whether to repair or resect and how best to achieve stable repair. The consequences of meniscectomy are well established, and meniscal tissue resection comes at a cost. The success rates of meniscal cartilage repair are greater when performed in conjunction with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Patient outcomes are better for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction when performed with meniscal repair than when partial meniscectomy is performed. The optimal configuration of sutures, the suture material used, and the type of suture technique are all important considerations. 5. Unearthing Paul's Ethics: Douglas Campbell on Creation, Redemption, and the Christian Moral Life.

Abstract

This article will examine and critique Douglas Campbell's account of the proper grounds for Christian ethics in light of his exegesis and interpretation of Gal 3:28. It will do so by raising three difficulties for his proposal. First, a close reading of his argument will show that as it stands it suffers from a lack of internal coherence. Second, it will show that Campbell's project is best understood as a restriction of the sources for ethical belief formation and then argue that this restriction leaves the ethicist with insufficient resources for constructive ethical reflection. Finally, it will show that his reading of Gal 3:28 shows considerable tension with the development of his thought in his recent essay, "Apocalyptic Epistemology" and also appears to be incompatible with traditional accounts of the incarnation. Inasmuch as Campbell's proposal reflects a number of common trajectories in contemporary studies of Pauline ethics--a turn toward eschatology, a suspicion of "natural theology," and an emphasis on the liberational elements of Paul's gospel--the conclusions of this article have salient implications for future studies in Pauline ethics, particularly on the continuities and discontinuities between the categories of our lived existence and their relation to our identity in Christ. 6. On the alleged connection between Moral Evil and human freedom: Response to Nagasawa and Trakakis

Abstract

In this essay, I respond to two criticisms of my essay, ‘On the Alleged Connection between Moral Evil and Human Freedom’. According to Yujin Nagasawa, I equivocate on the meaning of ‘moral evil.’ I respond by offering what I believe to be an unobjectionable stipulative under-standing of what counts as moral evil which is sufficient for my argument. According to Nick Trakakis, I seriously misunderstand the conception of freedom characteristic of free will theodicists. He suggests that my argument presupposes compatibilism. I respond by showing that my argument does not presuppose the denial of the capacity to have done otherwise.

7. On the alleged connection between moral evil and human freedom

Abstract

Those who advance the traditional argument from human freedom presume that human freedom provides an adequate explanation of moral evil. I argue that this presumption is erroneous. An adequate explanation of our capacity to make choices that produce moral evil must be distinguished from an adequate explanation of the actuality of such choices. Human freedom may account for our ability to make choices that issue in moral evil. It cannot, by itself, account for our actually making such choices. Something more than our potential for choices that produce moral evil is required to adequately explain the profusion of moral evil that we actually find in the world.
