1. The Impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on Young Adults' Health.

Abstract

This study examines the health impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) dependent coverage provision for U.S. young adults ages 19-25. Using data from the Current Population Survey - March Supplement for the years 2007 to 2012 we conduct logistic regression analyses to assess the mediating effect of dependent coverage on the association between period (Pre-Great Recession; Great Recession/Pre-ACA; Post-ACA) and the odds of excellent health. Young adults were significantly more likely to have dependent coverage in the post-ACA period compared to previous years. Young adults reported significantly lower odds of excellent health during the Great Recession/pre-ACA period (2008-2009) compared to the years preceding (2006-2007) and following it (2010-2011). Dependent health coverage was positively associated with the odds of excellent health and accounted for a substantial portion of health differences between young adults in the pre- and post-ACA periods. No such mediating effect was found for the pre-Great Recession period (2006-2007) compared to the pre-ACA/Great Recession period. 2. Exploring the Effects of Spousal Race on the Self-rated Health of Intermarried Adults

Abstract

Marital health advantages and the increase of interracial marriage (intermarriage) are well documented, but few studies investigate the health of intermarried people. We address this issue using aggregated data from the 2000–2013 Current Population Survey (CPS) and find that people with racial/ethnic minority spouses report lower self-rated health than those married to whites. Spousal race significantly moderated the association between respondent’s race and self-rated health such that minorities in same-race marriages had lower odds of reporting better health than those intermarried to whites. However, we found no differences in self-rated health among minorities intermarried to other minorities. There was also limited evidence that gender and socioeconomic status (SES) moderated the interaction between respondent’s race and spousal race. Our findings highlight the effects of marriage on the self-rated health of respondents and their spouse as well as the importance of examining differences in couple’s racial composition when investigating racial disparities in spousal health.

Abstract

Social movement scholars suggest that coalitions comprise a significant and growing portion of all protest mobilizations. Such organizational collaboration is of great practical importance to the labor movement in particular, as unions struggle to succeed on their own in a difficult economic and political environment. Yet surprisingly little is known about the factors underlying the development and success of coalitions. In this article we advance literature on labor and social movement coalitions, bringing a comparative historical approach to bear on the problem and examining two influential and far-reaching labor campaigns that occurred in the U.S. South. Our argument and findings demonstrate the importance of the relative fit among coalition members, the vulnerabilities of collective action targets, and their interplay for coalition outcomes. We conclude by discussing the implications of the findings for labor and social movement challenges more generally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
