[Display omitted] • Intramolecular hydrogen bonding played an important role in the solvent resistance of polymeric membranes. • Intramolecular hydrogen bonds were constructed in polyurethane membranes by functionalizing with special amino alcohol compound. • Solvent has certain impact on type and proportion of hydrogen bonds in PVA membranes. • There are synergies or contradictions between the effects of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and other factors on solvent resistance. • The obtained PU membranes showed good impermeability to water vapor, oxygen and chloride ions, which could be used as impermeable membranes. Hydrogen bonds, which can be divided into many types along with the deepening of research, exist in many compounds and have certain impact on properties of substances. In this work, effect of intramolecular hydrogen bond on solvent resistance of polymeric membranes was studied from two aspects. On the one hand, the existence of intramolecular hydrogen bond on solvent resistance of polymeric membranes was studied by constructing and shielding special hydroxyl groups in typical polymer polyurethane. On the other hand, content of intramolecular hydrogen bond on solvent resistance was investigated by building different ratios of inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds in polyvinyl alcohols. The structures, solvent resistance and hydrogen bonding interactions were systematically investigated by FT-IR, XRD, Ds and performances before and after immersed in solvents. Permeabilities of the membranes for practical application were also characterized. The results showed that distinct type and ratio of hydrogen bonds played different role on solvent resistance. A good agreement between the swelling performances and content of intramolecular hydrogen bond proved the positive effect of intramolecular hydrogen bond on solvent durability of polymeric membranes. In addition, polyurethane membranes exhibited good impermeability to water vapor, oxygen and chloride ions which showed potential application in many fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
