AbstractEarly Palaeozoic basement rocks in South Westland consist of regionally metamorphosed Greenland Group of probable Ordovician depositional age. Correlative and formerly contiguous Gondwana margin rocks are also found in Antarctica and eastern Australia. Major protoliths are variably foliated sandstone and mudstone, with rare scattered calcareous lenses. Field, petrographic and electron microprobe data reveal a progressive, regional, southeast-wards increase in metamorphic grade in a 2600 km2area between Martins Bay and Fox Glacier. We define new chlorite, biotite–albite, biotite–calcic plagioclase and sillimanite–microcline zones. Minerals such as cordierite and andalusite, along with semi-schistose textures, indicate a low P/T (pressure/temperature) Buchan style of regional metamorphism spanning the lower greenschist to upper amphibolite facies. This contrasts with medium to high P/T metamorphism in the Haast Schist east of the Alpine Fault. In South Westland, peak metamorphism is loosely constrained as Devonian to Carboniferous (330–375 Ma) in age; the present-day isograd pattern was mostly established by the Late Cretaceous and has not been strongly influenced by Alpine Fault deformation.

AbstractA gonnardite-thomsonite-chabazite-calcite assemblage forms a cement in the Foveaux Formation, a fossiliferous gabbroic boulder bed that accumulated at the base of a sea cliff cut in a Permian igneous complex during late Oligocene±early Miocene time. Gonnardite was the earliest zeolite to form, locally following minor calcite. It was followed epitaxially by thomsonite, co-precipitating with chabazite. Crystal habits indicate a low-temperature origin. The maximum temperature to which the deposit may have been subjected is estimated as not more than ?30°C. The chabazites are Ca-poor chabazite-K and chabazite-Na. Representative electron microprobe analyses are as follows, all + nH2O:thomsonite: Na3.77Ca7.73(Al19.39Si20.65)O80and Na3.78K0.04Ca7.25Mg0.05(Al19.13Si21.05)O80;gonnardite: Na6.95K0.03Ca4.73(Al16.99Si23.15)O80and Na8.56K0.03Ca4.05(Al17.32Si22.84)O80;chabazite-K: Na1.18K1.72Ca0.08Mg0.23(Al3.51Si8.49)O24and Na1.67K1.92Ca0.18Mg0.17(Al4.11Si7.85)O24;chabazite-Na: Na2.51K1.13Ca0.17Mg0.02(Al4.08Si7.93)O24.Such a Si-poor zeolite assemblage is unusual for marine sediments and is attributed to precipitation from marine water impoverished in silica in the gabbroic boulder bed and interacting with shell material and calcic plagioclase. In contrast, a dioritic clast in the boulder bed provides an example of less silica-poor zeolites originally formed in the parent igneous complex. Veinlets in the clast contain scolecite averaging Na1.19Ca7.36(Al15.84Si24.14)O80.nH2O, and mesolite averaging Na5.13K0.03Ca5.24(Al15.93Si24.13)O80.nH2O, in part as sub-microscopic intergrowths. The composition of scolecite closely corresponds to the most Na-rich scolecite reported hitherto.

AbstractContinuous fiber reinforced titanium matrix composites (TMC) are attractive as one of the potential structural materials for aerospace applications, because of their high specific strength and stiffness. However, TMC parts are not yet put into practical use due to their limited damage tolerance and an enormous production cost resulting from process limitation requiring preliminary forming and elaborate tooling for consolidation. In order to reduce the production cost, superplastic TMC sheets (SiC/Ti-4.5Al-3V-2Mo-2Fe) were developed, and deformation properties, and cavitation behavior were investigated. The blade-shaped model was formed successfully out of the newly developed TMC sheet by means of Argon-gas-pressure forming technique. However, in order to reduce the defects that were observed in fiber/matrix interface of the deformed TMC, the tensile flow stresses in TMC sheet during deformation should be minimized. In this study a diaphragm forming method, whereby a TMC sheet is forced against the form tool surface by pressure acting on a driving sheet, was adopted to reduce the tensile stress generated in TMC sheet during superplastic forming of blade-shaped models. As a result, no defects were observed by an optical microscope in the TMC deformed by diaphragm forming method. Diffusion bonding techniques to attach the root blocks to the deformed TMC sheet and the reduction of the blade-fabrication cost are also discussed.

Background: Nitric oxide has cardioprotective effects through several mechanisms. However, nitric oxide may have deleterious effects in the presence of superoxide because it is converted to peroxynitrite, which then initiates lipid peroxidation. Using a canine model of orthotopic heart transplantation, we examined whether adding an organic nitric oxide donor, nitroglycerin, to preservation solution elicits lipid peroxidation after reperfusion and causes deleterious effects on coronary endothelial function and left ventricular function. Methods and results: The donor heart was preserved for 24 hours in cold University of Wisconsin solution with nitroglycerin (0.1 mg/mL) supplementation (group NTG, n = 8) or in standard University of Wisconsin solution (group C, n = 8). After reperfusion, changes of coronary resistance were measured during the infusion of acetylcholine (0.1 mg/min) and of sodium nitroprusside (1 mg/min), and percent coronary relaxation was calculated. Left ventricular function was evaluated by pressure-volume relations with the use of a conductance catheter, thereby deriving the slopes of end-systolic pressure-volume relation, stroke work-end-diastolic volume relation, and maximum rate of change of left ventricular pressure-end-diastolic volume relation. Serum lipid peroxide level was measured. Percent coronary relaxation was similar for the 2 groups. The slopes of end-systolic pressure-volume relation, stroke work-end-diastolic volume relation, and maximum rate of change of left ventricular pressure-end-diastolic volume relation in group NTG were significantly higher than those in group C. On the other side, serum lipid peroxide level in group NTG was significantly higher than that in group C. Conclusions: Nitroglycerin may have detrimental effects evidenced by the increase in lipid peroxidation, which implied peroxynitrite formation. However, the overall effect of nitroglycerin was cardioprotective. Although the exact mechanism is yet to be clarified, the superb cardioprotective effect of nitroglycerin overwhelms the exaggeration of lipid peroxidation. (J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 1999;118:547-56)

An arterial switch operation is considered a good alternative for the repair of double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) with atrioventricular concordance connection and subpulmonary ventricular septal defect (VSD) when intraventricular rerouting is not feasible. The clinical results of an arterial switch operation with ventricular septal defect closure for this anomaly were studied.

The effects of arresting donor hearts with University of Wisconsin solution was investigated. Donor dogs were divided into two groups according to the technique used for arresting the heart. In group I (n= 6) the heart was arrested with University of Wisconsin solution, whereas in group II (n= 6) extracellular-type cardioplegia (K+= 20 mmol/liter) was used to induce cardioplegic arrest. Aortic root pressure was measured during the infusion of solution at constant flow. In both groups, the hearts were then flushed and stored in cold University of Wisconsin solution for 6 h. The hearts were transplanted orthotopically and disconnected from cardiopulmonary bypass. Left ventricular function was evaluated by pressure—volume relations using a conductance catheter. Peak aortic root pressure during the infusion was significantly higher in group I than in group II, although post-transplant left ventricular function was similar in both groups. Although there was no difference in cardiac function after implantation, donor hearts should be arrested by extracellular-type cardioplegia to prevent coronary vasoconstriction associated with preservation in University of Wisconsin solution.

Abstract: Almost pure andradite and intermediate members of the andradite-grossular series (gros40–49, and 47–54, py0–3, alm0–3, spess0–2, hydrogarnet0–3), often framboidal in habit, are widespread in metabasites including lavas, minor intrusions, and volcanic sandstones and breccias metamorphosed under prehnite-pumpellyite and pumpellyite-actinolite facies conditions, possibly extending into the zeolite facies. Coexisting phases include iron-rich epidotes (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=22–34), pumpellyite, prehnite, actinolite, and chlorite, electron microprobe analyses of which are given, as well as quartz, albite, and calcite. Zoisite (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=1–5) and iron-poor epidote (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=11–18) occur in 2 rocks in pseudomorphs after plagioclase together with more iron-rich epidote, but not in close association with the garnets. Coexisting pumpellyite is iron-rich (FeO* 9–14%) in the prehnite-pumpellyite facies and iron-poor (FeO* 5%) in the pumpellyiteactinolite facies. Chlorites and actinolites vary widely and sympathetically in FeO/MgO+FeO ratio. Andradite is also described from a stilpnomelane-actinolite-hematite-bearing andradite quartzite of the pumpellyite-actinolite facies. Conditions of formation involved temperatures of 300 to 400 or less, at pressures up to a few kilobars. A wide range of oxygen fugacities is possible, but $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ in the fluid phase was low. Grandite and chlorite are incompatible in the pumpellyite-actinolite and greenschist facies in the presence of quartz but the 2 minerals occur together in some pumpellyite-actinolite facies assemblages as a result of incomplete reaction and/or local deficiency in silica. In the greenschist facies the association is replaced by epidote-actinolitehematite and sodic amphibole. Whereas at medium to high grades of metamorphism andradite and grandite are characteristic of skarns irrespective of $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ , at very low grades they are found in mafic volcanic rocks and volcanogenic sediments as well as in certain cherty rocks of unusual composition, rodingites, and serpentinites, where $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ was very low.

Background: The lazaroid U74500A is a 21-aminosteroid that inhibits lipid peroxidation and attenuates ischemia-reperfusion injury. We examined the effect of U74500A on heart preservation with the use of a clinically relevant canine orthotopic heart transplantation model. Methods and results: Six donor dogs (group L) were pretreated intravenously with U74500A (10 mg/kg), and the dogs without pretreatment served as a control (group C, n = 6). The donor heart was preserved in cold University of Wisconsin solution for 24 hours. The heart was then transplanted orthotopically. Myocardial biopsy was performed to measure the adenosine triphosphate level at the end of ischemia. Before reperfusion, recipients in group L received another dose of U74500A (10 mg/kg) intravenously. After 3 hours of reperfusion, left ventricular function was evaluated by left ventricular pressure-volume relations with the use of a Millar catheter and conductance catheter, thereby deriving the slope of the end-systolic pressure-volume relation, the slope of the stroke work-end-diastolic volume relation, and the slope of the maximum dP/dt-end-diastolic volume relation. At the same time, serum creatine kinase MB isoenzyme and lipid peroxide levels were measured. The slopes of the end-systolic pressure-volume relation, the stroke work-end-diastolic volume relation, and the maximum dP/dt-end-diastolic volume relation for group L were significantly higher than those for group C. The adenosine triphosphate levels for group L were significantly higher than those for group C. Serum creatine kinase MB isoenzyme and lipid peroxide levels for group L were significantly lower than those for group C. Conclusions: Inhibition of lipid peroxidation by the administration of U74500A was effective for 24-hour canine cardiac preservation. These results indicate that U74500A is a promising agent for heart allograft preservation. (J THORAC CARDIOVASC SURG 1996;112:1017-26)

Abstract:  We identified a regulatory region of the mouse CD8 beta chain-encoding gene (CD8b) promoter. The CD8b 5′ upstream sequence could not drive the expression of the bacterial chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene without T-cell receptor or SV40 enhancer elements. The results of transient transfection assays indicated that the dominant transcription-activating element within the CD8b-promoter is located at –45 to –40 base pairs (CCGCCC) from the transcriptional initiation site. Elimination of this element, by deletion or specific point mutation, significantly reduced transcriptional activity from this promoter. The sequence of this core region corresponds to a GC box motif known to act as a binding site for a ubiquitously expressed transcriptional activator, Sp1. However, the promoter activity appeared to be T-cell-specific, and the gel retardation assay using the core sequence as a probe revealed formation of complexes with multiple nuclear factors, one of them being specific to T lineage cells. These data suggest that the CD8b promoter requires a cis-acting element as well as several nuclear factors for full-range, tissue-specific transcription.

It is still controversial whether to pulse or not to pulse for the establishment of ideal extracorporeal circulation. We directly measured the renal sympathetic nerve activity in mongrel dogs (n = 10, weighing from 13 to 21 kg) to determine the effects of pulsatile and nonpulsatile systemic perfusion on the control of the sympathetic nerve activity during left ventricular assistance. Pulsatile perfusion was generated with an air-driven, diaphragm-type blood pump, and nonpulsatile perfusion was generated with a centrifugal pump. Renal sympathetic nerve activity and the blood flow of the descending aorta were then recorded during pulsatile and nonpulsatile systemic perfusion. Other variables, such as mean arterial pressure, central venous pressure, left atrial pressure, and blood gas levels, were kept constant. At the same mean arterial pressure, renal sympathetic nerve activity during pulsatile perfusion decreased significantly to 80% of renal sympathetic nerve activity during nonpulsatile perfusion (26.8 +/- 2.4 vs 33.4 +/- 2.9 spikes/sec, p < 0.01). Total systemic vascular resistance during pulsatile perfusion decreased significantly to 85% of that during nonpulsatile perfusion (5700 +/- 580 vs 6667 +/- 709 dynes . sec . cm^-^5, p < 0.05). These results suggest that pulsatile systemic perfusion, compared with nonpulsatile systemic perfusion, reduces sympathetic nerve activity and peripheral vascular resistance and thus may improve both microcirculation and organ function. The Late Triassic to Early Jurassic Park Volcanics Group comprises minor shallow intrusive and extrusive bodies emplaced during mainly marine sedimentation of the Murihiku Terrane, southern New Zealand. Gowan Andesite in western Southland and Glenham Porphyry andesites in eastern Southland are high-K andesites. Glassy examples have commonly lost K during alteration. Orthoclase contents of Or3.6-3.7 in plagioclase phenocrysts at An50 confirm the high-K nature of the melts at the time of phenocryst crystallisation. The Gowan andesites have higher Fe/Mg than the Glenham and related differences in minor element chemistry suggesting lower fO2during fractionation of the parent magma. Pinney Volcanics in western Southland are mostly high-K trachydacites but, like Glenham Porphyry, include minor rhyolite. Barnicoat Andesite in the Nelson area is medium-K olivine andesite, marginally tholeiitic in terms of its FeO*/MgO versus SiO2behaviour, but otherwise is typically calc-alkaline, as are the Gowan, Glenham, and Pinney. Analyses of pyroxenes (augites, orthopyroxenes, reaction rim and groundmass pigeonites) reveal xenocrysts recording an early stage of magma fractionation, slight iron enrichment in the andesite stage, and lowered Fe/Mg and increased Ca contents in augites of the most felsic rocks. Titanian tschermakite and litanian magnesio-tschermakite of deep-seated origin participated in fractionation leading to the Pinney Volcanics, and magnesio-hornblende, edenite, and biotite crystallised as minor late stage minerals following high-level emplacement of Gowan Andesite and siliceous Glenham Porphyry members. Low 87Sr/86Sr ratios (c. 0.7034-0.7037), REE and multi-element distribution patterns, and the mineralogical features collectively suggest fractionation of the andesites from parental basalt originating in an enriched mantle wedge above a subduction zone, with minimal contamination by continental crust.High-K andesites appear to be unknown in clearly established forearc basins whereas they are characteristic of back-arc sites. At the time of emplacement of the Park Volcanics, the southern Murihiku sedimentary basin is therefore unlikely to have occupied a forearc setting. The volcanic arc that provided detritus and ash deposits to the basin at that time was probably sited on a strip of largely Proterozoic continental crust detached from the Gondwana mainland by a marginal sea with a subduction zone dipping away from that marginal sea under the volcanic arc, with the Murihiku sedimentary basin towards the rear on the proto-Pacific side. Drumduan Group, with a low-temperature, high-pressure metamorphic overprint, and other largely volcaniclastic terrane fragments in the Median Tectonic Zone of southern New Zealand, may be arc-front remnants of the same arc system.

AbstractNoélbensonite, a new mineral, is the barium manganese analogue of lawsonite. It is described from the Woods ornamental rhodonite mine, 30 km NNE of Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia, where it occurs as aggregates of blocky to sometimes lamellar crystals ranging from a few micrometres to (rarely) 100 µm in length. It replaces NaMn amphibole, namansilite, and pectolite, and also occurs as tiny monomineralic veinlets 0.05–0.25 mm thick. Rare euhedral crystals are dominated by {100} and {011}, with (011) ^ = 68°. The mineral is orthorhombic, space group apparently Cmcm; a= 6.325(1), b= 9.120(1), c= 13.618(1) Å, V= 785.6(1) Å3, with a : b : c= 0.694 : 1 : 1.493. Noélbensonite is brittle, fracture irregular, Mohs hardness about 4, cleavage and twinning not observed, colour dark brown, streak paler yellow-brown, lustre earthy on some veinlet surfaces to brilliantly vitreous, calculated density 3.87 g/cm3, refractive indices a = 1.82(1),ß (calculated from 2V) = 1.835(10), ? = 1.85(1), biaxial negative 2Va= 46°(3°), strong dispersion r> v, straight extinction to plane of flattening, {100}, a ? c, ß ? b, ? ? awith pleochroism in very thin sections: a = orange yellow, ß = orange, ? = brownish orange, absorption ? > ß ?p; a. The average of 23 electron microprobe analyses (wt.%) is SiO226.02, Al2O30.17, TiO20.01, Fe2O30.19, Mn2O334.76, CaO 0.31, Na2O 0.14, BaO 29.08, SrO 1.51, H2Ocalc7.87, total 100.06, leading to the simplified formula . Up to 15% Sr and 9% Ca substitute for Ba in the large-cation sites. The strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [(Iobs) dobs/Å hkl] (100) 4.85 111; (50) 4.557 020; (59) 4.322 021; (77) 3.416 113,004; (80) 2.869 202; (47) 2.849 114; (82) 2.729 024; (45) 2.543 132; (48) 2.428 222; (38) 2.255 223,041. The name is for William Noél Benson (1885–1957), in honour of his classic researches in the New England Fold Belt and of his tenure of the Chair of Geology at the University of Otago.

AbstractSugilite relatively rich in manganese has been found at two new localities, the Hoskins and Woods mines in New South Wales, Australia. The occurrences are in manganese-rich silicate rocks of middle to upper greenschist facies (Hoskins mine) and hornblende hornfels facies (Woods mine). Coexisting minerals are members of the namansilite-aegirine and pectolite-serandite series, Mn-rich alkali amphiboles, alkali feldspar, braunite, rhodonite, tephroite, albite, microcline, norrishite, witherite, manganoan calcite, quartz, and several unidentified minerals. Woods mine sugilite is colour-zoned with pale mauve cores and colourless rims, whereas Hoskins mine sugilite is only weakly colour-zoned and pink to mauve. Within single samples, the chemical compositions of sugilite from both localities show wide ranges in Al contents and less variable ranges of Fe and Mn, similar to trends in sugilite from other localities. The refractive indices and cell dimensions tend to show systematic increases progressing from Al-rich to Fe-Mn-rich. The formation of the sugilite is controlled by the high alkali (especially Li) and manganese contents of the country rock, reflected in the occurrences of coexisting high alkali- and manganese-bearing minerals, and by high fo2conditions.

AbstractGreen biotite-like material occurring in Haast Schist at Brighton, eastern Otago, consists of biotite and a kaolin-group mineral interlayered on a 1 µm scale. Electron probe analyses of composite grains show K2O contents of 4.4 to 8.5 wt.%, in part reflecting the kaolin content, and in part, leaching of K+ions. Phengitic muscovite shows similar but less extreme effects. Kaolin, siderite, calcite, and titanium oxides have formed in the rock during hydrothermal alteration of epidote, sphene, and biotite by carbonated waters. Potassium leaching due to surficial weathering processes appears to be widespread in biotites from the schists of eastern Otago, and biotites (hydrobiotites?) with K2O as low as 4 wt. % are reported. Similar material with 0.8 to 2.4% K2O and with Na2O about 1% is thought to be more highly degraded biotite. Microprobe analyses of kaolin and chlorites from associated rocks are given in addition to those of ‘biotite’ and phengitic muscovite. Analyses of sheet biotite and sheet muscovite from the Mataketake Range pegmatites in the highest grade parts of the Haast Schist terrane are presented for comparison. The study shows that biotite is more widespread in eastern Otago than was previously thought, and that almandine-rich garnet is not confirmed down-grade of the first appearance of biotite in eastern Otago.

Summary Ardennite of complex composition: (Mn2+3.488Ca0.509Ba0.002)S=4(Mg0.916916 Fe3+0.165 Mn3+0.099Cu0.033Ni0.009Zn0.006 Ti0.008Al4.764)S=6(As5+0.823V5+0.022P0.005B0.069Al0.042Si5.039)S=6O21.81(OH)6.17 occurs in crack-seal quartz veins in quartz-albite-piemontite-spessartine-phengitehematite-chlorite-rutile-tourmaline ± calcite schist of the Haast Schist Group near Arrow Junction, western Otago, New Zealand. The Mn2+/Mn3+-ratio is sensitive to calculations and to accuracy of analyses. Boron is detected in ardennite for the first time. Other properties includea = 1.734(3),ß = 1.735(3),? = 1.751(3), 2VZ = 30(2)°;a = 8.721(1),b = 5.816(1),c = 18.545(3) Å,V = 940.7(2) Å3. Associated mineral phases are spessartine, hematite, piemontite containing ˜0.7% SrO and ˜0.06% PbO, and phengite. Later-stage vein minerals comprise chlorite, albite, and manganoan calcite which were deposited under less highly oxidizing conditions. Digenite with minor intergrown covellite occurs in small amount with manganoan calcite and quartz in a cross-cutting late-stage veina chalcopyrite and native copper occur in other late-stage veins. Arsenic and other components of the ardennite and associated minerals are derived from highly oxidized ferromanganese oxide- and hydroxide-bearing siliceous pelagic sediments that formed the protolith for the piemontite schist. The veins formed at a relatively early stage after metamorphism peaked in the chlorite zone of the greenschist facies under conditions that have been estimated at about 4.5 kbar, 390 °C.
