Fusarium head blight continues to be a threat to spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) production in the north‐central region of the United States. ‘Lang‐MN’ (Reg. no. CV‐1182, PI 687038) hard red spring wheat was released by the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2017 because it combines the best available Fusarium head blight resistance with high grain yield, grain protein concentration, and good end‐use quality characteristics. Lang‐MN is a mid‐late maturity cultivar that also has acceptable lodging resistance despite its above average plant height owing to its lack of the semi‐dwarfing genes Rht‐B1or Rht‐D1but presence of Rht24. ‘Flathead’ (Reg. no. CV‐1164, PI 693237) hard red winter (HRW) wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) was developed and released by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station in 2019. Flathead was derived from a composite of two very closely related single crosses of the predominant cultivar ‘Yellowstone’ to stripe rust resistant source PI 640431, a hard white spring wheat backcross derivative of WA007900 that carries stripe rust all‐stage resistance genes Yr5and Yr15. Flathead was developed using a modified bulk breeding method and selected as an F5:6head row after phenotypic selection for stripe rust resistance at Kalispell, MT. Flathead was tested under the experimental number MT1564 in Montana yield trials from 2015 to 2019. Flathead is a high‐yielding HRW wheat cultivar with early maturity, short stature, medium grain protein concentration, excellent milling and baking quality, and a high level of all‐stage resistance to predominant races of stripe rust. Leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina, is a common and important disease of hard red winter wheat (Triticum aeistivumL.) in the Great Plains of the United States. The hard red winter wheat cultivars ‘Santa Fe’ and ‘Duster’ have had effective leaf rust resistance since their release in 2003 and 2006, respectively. The objective of this research was to determine the identity of the leaf rust resistance genes in these cultivars. Both cultivars were vernalized and crossed with the susceptible spring wheat ‘Thatcher’, F1plants were backcrossed to Thatcher, and 90 backcross (BC) F1plants from each cross were grown out to develop BC1F2families. Seedlings of the Thatcher*2/Santa Fe BC1F2families segregated for two genes. The seedling resistance was correlated with the presence of the 2AS/2NS translocation from Aegilops ventricosaTausch, which indicated one of the genes was Lr37. In field plots, the families segregated for a single gene that was independent of the seedling resistance and the 2NS translocation. Santa Fe has Lr37on the 2NS translocation, an additional adult plant resistance gene, and was postulated to have Lr3a. A previous postulation of Lr17ain Santa Fe was determined to be incorrect. Duster was postulated to have Lr3aand Lr11for seedling resistance and, based on a molecular marker, Lr34plus another adult plant resistance gene for field resistance. Lines with the additional adult plant resistance gene in both crosses had leaf rust severity of 10 to 30% with a resistance response of small to large uredinia with chlorosis and necrosis.
