Abstract

Revisions to the TNM stage classifications for lung cancer, informed by the international database (N = 94,708) of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee, need external validation. The objective was to externally validate the revisions by using the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) of the American College of Surgeons.

Abstract

Stage classification provides a consistent language to describe the anatomic extent of disease and is therefore a critical tool in caring for patients. The Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer developed proposals for revision of the classification of lung cancer for the eighth edition of the tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) classification, which takes effect in 2017.

Abstract

Separate tumor nodules with the same histologic appearance occur in the lungs in a small proportion of patients with primary lung cancer. This article addresses how such tumors can be classified to inform the eighth edition of the anatomic classification of lung cancer. Separate tumor nodules should be distinguished from second primary lung cancer, multifocal ground glass/lepidic tumors, and pneumonic-type lung cancer, which are addressed in separate analyses.

Patients with lung cancer who harbor multiple pulmonary sites of disease have been challenging to classify; a subcommittee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee was charged with developing proposals for the eighth edition of the tumor, node, and metastasis (TNM) classification to address this issue.

Abstract

The IASLC Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee has collected a new database of 94,708 cases donated from 35 sources in 16 countries around the globe. This has now been analysed by our statistical partners at Cancer Research And Biostatistics and, in close collaboration with the members of the committee proposals have been developed for the T, N, and M categories of the 8th edition of the TNM Classification for lung cancer due to be published late 2016. In this publication we describe the methods used to evaluate the resultant Stage groupings and the proposals put forward for the 8th edition.

8. Catalytic pyrolysis of biomass for transportation fuels

Abstract

Application of heterogeneous catalysis in biomass pyrolysis seems to be one of the most promising methods to improve bio‐oil quality by minimizing its undesirable properties (high viscosity, corrosivity, instability, etc.) and producing renewable crude (bio‐crude). This bio‐crude could finally lead to transportation fuels using existing refinery processes (such as hydrotreating). A plethora of catalytic materials have been investigated in the literature as catalysts for the biomass catalytic pyrolysis process. Among them, microporous (zeolitic) or mesoporous (Al‐MCM‐41) acid materials have been tested, either promoted or not with several transition metals. Lately, basic materials are also suggested. For this process, a circulating fluid bed reactor seems to be the most effective technology, since it offers continuous catalyst regeneration. The research till today shows that catalysts based on ZSM‐ are the most promising. With these catalysts, bio‐oil yield up to about 30 wt% (on dry biomass) with about 21 wt% oxygen can be produced. However, tailoring of catalyst properties such as acidity/basicity and porosity characteristics is still needed to develop an optimized catalyst. Abstract

The use of homoionic organic clays and mixed‐ion organic/inorganic clays modified by di‐ or triamines (Jeffamines), which are being used as epoxy resin curing agents, in the synthesis of polymer nanocomposites has been studied in this work. Our aim is to enhance polymer crosslinking and interfacial adhesion in the nanocomposite structure by utilizing the functionality of the di/triamines on the surface of clay nanolayers and by reducing the organic modifier via formation of homostructured mixed‐ion organic/inorganic clays. The results show that the use of homoionic organic clays exchanged with relatively short chain di‐ or triamines and mixed‐ion organic/inorganic clays partially exchanged (ca. 35%) with long chain diamines resulted in intercalated structures with enhanced thermo‐mechanical properties (Young's Modulus, Storage Modulus). On the other hand, homoionic organic clays exchanged with long chain diamines and triamines resulted in exfoliated nanocomposites but with compromised mechanical properties due to the plasticizing effect of the long chain amine modifiers.

12. Caenorhabditis elegans twist plays an essential role in non-striated muscle development.

Abstract

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor Twist plays a role in mesodermal development in both invertebrates and vertebrates. In an effort to understand the role of the unique Caenorhabditis elegans Twist homolog, hlh-8, we analyzed mesodermal development in animals with a deletion in the hlh-8 locus. This deletion was predicted to represent a null allele because the HLH domain is missing and the reading frame for the protein is disrupted. Animals lacking CeTwist function were constipated and egg-laying defective. Both of these defects were rescued in transgenic mutant animals expressing wild-type hlh-8. Observing a series of mesoderm-specific markers allowed us to characterize the loss of hlh-8 function more thoroughly. Our results demonstrate that CeTwist performs an essential role in the proper development of a subset of mesodermal tissues in C. elegans. We found that CeTwist was required for the formation of three out of the four non-striated enteric muscles born in the embryo. In contrast, CeTwist was not required for the formation of the embryonically derived striated muscles. Most of the post-embryonic mesoderm develops from a single lineage. CeTwist was necessary for appropriate patterning in this lineage and was required for expression of two downstream target genes, but was not required for the expression of myosin, a marker of differentiation. Our results suggest that mesodermal patterning by Twist is an evolutionarily conserved function.

13. The RING finger/B-box factor TAM-1 and a retinoblastoma-like protein LIN-35 modulate context-dependent gene silencing in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Abstract

Context-dependent gene silencing is used by many organisms to stably modulate gene activity for large chromosomal regions. We have used tandem array transgenes as a model substrate in a screen for Caenorhabditis elegans mutants that affect context-dependent gene silencing in somatic tissues. This screen yielded multiple alleles of a previously uncharacterized gene, designated tam-1 (for tandem-array-modifier). Loss-of-function mutations in tam-1 led to a dramatic reduction in the activity of numerous highly repeated transgenes. These effects were apparently context dependent, as nonrepetitive transgenes retained activity in a tam-1 mutant background. In addition to the dramatic alterations in transgene activity, tam-1 mutants showed modest alterations in expression of a subset of endogenous cellular genes. These effects include genetic interactions that place tam-1 into a group called the class B synMuv genes (for a Synthetic Multivulva phenotype); this family plays a negative role in the regulation of RAS pathway activity in C. elegans. Loss-of-function mutants in other members of the class-B synMuv family, including lin-35, which encodes a protein similar to the tumor suppressor Rb, exhibit a hypersilencing in somatic transgenes similar to that of tam-1 mutants. Molecular analysis reveals that tam-1 encodes a broadly expressed nuclear protein with RING finger and B-box motifs.

15. Characterization of Electrodeposited Molybdenum Black Surface Coatings

Abstract

Molybdenum black has been produced in thin coating form (3 μm) on prepared aluminium surfaces by the method of electrodeposition. The microstructure of the coating has been identified as one of flat irregular platelets belonging to a material which can be described as quasi-amorphous. Its chemical composition is 90 wt% MoO2· 2 H2O and 10 wt% Ni(OH)2· Mo-black appears to be a good absorber of solar radiation. Absorbance values as high as 93% have been measured for the visible region of the solar energy spectrum. It has been identified that the coating is of semiconducting nature and that the dominant conduction mechanism is the Schottky emission mechanism. Photoelectrochemical measurements have finally provided evidence for photon-induced electrochemical processes at the Mo-black electrodes.

Abstract

The application of heterogeneous catalysis in biomass pyrolysis is considered as one of the most promising methods to improve bio‐oil quality by minimizing its undesirable properties (high viscosity, corrosivity, instability, etc.) and producing renewable fuels and high‐value chemicals. Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass refers both to the “in situ”and “ex situ or two‐stage” upgrading. A plethora of catalytic materials have been investigated in the literature for both approaches, including conventional microporous zeolites, ordered mesoporous aluminosilicates, promoted or not with several transition metals, as well as various metal (nano)oxide catalysts with Lewis acidity. Recently, hybrid micro/mesoporous and basic materials have been also suggested exhibiting most promising results due to combined micro/mesoporosity and adequate balance of acid and basic sites. Optimum catalysts are required to retain deoxygenation, enhance yields of aromatics, and other valuable compounds (such as phenolics), while limiting coke formation. Coke formation is one of the reasons of catalyst deactivation; a very challenging issue during biomass CFP, especially using zeolites. The deactivation process is affected by many factors, including the composition of the feedstock (inorganic minerals present in the feedstock may also deposit on the catalyst), reaction conditions, and the nature/properties of the catalysts used in CFP. Precoking on the surface of zeolites or MgO deposition are among the proposed effective ways to suppress coke formation and thus, catalyst deactivation. Abstract

It has been claimed [R. L. Kao, D. A. Edwards, D. T. Wasan, and E. Chen, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 148, 247 (1992)] that the surface dilatational viscosity at high rates of interface expansion can be measured using the maximum bubble pressure method. However, Kao et al. arbitrarily omitted the bulk viscous term from the equation governing bubble growth (their Eq. [15]) on the grounds that it is negligible compared to the capillary term only. It is shown here that such an omission is inadmissible since the bulk viscous term is large in comparison to the surface dilatational viscosity term which also appears in Eq. [15]. In addition, Eq. [17] in Kao et al. cannot be used in interpreting
