Glass fragments found in crime scenes may constitute important forensic evidence when properly analyzed, for example, to determine their origin. This analysis could be greatly helped by having a large and diverse database of glass fragments and by using it for constructing reliable machine learning (ML)-based glass classification models. Ideally, the samples that make up this database should be analyzed by a single accurate and standardized analytical technique. However, due to differences in equipment across laboratories, this is not feasible. With this in mind, in this work, we investigated if and how measurement performed at different laboratories on the same set of glass fragments could be combined in the context of ML. First, we demonstrated that elemental analysis methods such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS), particle-induced Gamma-ray emission (PIGE), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and prompt Gamma-ray neutron activation analysis (PGAA) could each produce lab-specific ML-based classification models. Next, we determined rules for the successful combinations of data from different laboratories and techniques and demonstrated that when followed, they give rise to improved models, and conversely, poor combinations will lead to poor-performing models. Thus, the combination of PIXE and LA-ICP-MS improves the performances by ∼10–15%, while combining PGAA with other techniques provides poorer performances in comparison with the lab-specific models. Finally, we demonstrated that the poor performances of the SEM-EDS technique, still in use by law enforcement agencies, could be greatly improved by replacing SEM-EDS measurements for Fe and Ca by PIXE measurements for these elements. These findings suggest a process whereby forensic laboratories using different elemental analysis techniques could upload their data into a unified database and get reliable classification based on lab-agnostic models. This in turn brings us closer to a more exhaustive extraction of information from glass fragment evidence and furthermore may form the basis for international-wide collaboration between law enforcement agencies.

This work reports on the first systematic study using secondary ion mass spectrometry with MeV ions (MeV-SIMS) for analysis of synthetic organic pigments (SOPs) that can be usually found in modern and contemporary art paints. In order to prove the applicability of the method to different chemical classes of SOPs, 17 pigments were selected for the analyses. The focus was on blue and green phthalocyanines, yellow and red (naphthol AS) azo pigments, red quinacridone, anthraquinone, and diketopyrrolo-pyrrole pigments. Since there are no reference spectra available for this technique, pure pigment powders were measured first to create a database. Simple two-component paint systems were also prepared for testing purposes by mixing synthetic organic pigments with alkyd and acrylic binders. Commercial paints that contain the SOPs with identical C.I. numbers as in the prepared two-component samples were analyzed. All pigments were successfully identified in commercial products in the MeV-SIMS mass spectra through molecular and larger specific fragment ion peaks in the positive-ion mode. The main advantages of MeV-SIMS over other techniques used in SOPs identification, like pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), direct-temperature resolved mass spectrometry (DTMS), and laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDIMS), can be summarized as follows: (i) pigments and binders can be detected simultaneously in the same mass spectrum acquired over a short measurement time (up to 500 s), (ii) only small sample flakes are required for the measurements, which are analyzed without any chemical treatment prior to the analyses, (iii) samples are not consumed during the analyses and can be reused for other measurements, e.g., multielemental analysis by other ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques, such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Compared to, e.g., Raman spectroscopy, the significant benefit of MeV-SIMS is the exact identification of the SOPs in the paints even if pigments of similar structures are measured.

CMVs efficiently target MHC I molecules to avoid recognition by cytotoxic T cells. However, the lack of MHC I on the cell surface renders the infected cell susceptible to NK cell killing upon missing self recognition. To counter this, mouse CMV (MCMV) rescues some MHC I molecules to engage inhibitory Ly49 receptors. Here we identify a new viral protein, MATp1, that is essential for MHC I surface rescue. Rescued altered-self MHC I molecules show increased affinity to inhibitory Ly49 receptors, resulting in inhibition of NK cells despite substantially reduced MHC I surface levels. This enables the virus to evade recognition by licensed NK cells. During evolution, this novel viral immune evasion mechanism could have prompted the development of activating NK cell receptors that are specific for MATp1-modified altered-self MHC I molecules. Our study solves a long-standing conundrum of how MCMV avoids recognition by NK cells, unravels a fundamental new viral immune evasion mechanism, and demonstrates how this forced the evolution of virus-specific activating MHC I–restricted Ly49 receptors.

Abstract: In our large collection of macerated human adult skulls and disarticulated skulls of young individuals we found cases with an extremely large lateral lamina of the pterygoid process. The medial wall of the infratemporal fossa was defined as its formation by the lateral lamina of the pterygoid process and the medial pterygoid muscle. The muscular part formed two-thirds and the lateral lamina one-third of this wall. In cases of a very large lateral lamina in our specimens nearly the whole medial wall was osseous. The third portion of the trigeminal nerve gives off the lingual nerve and alveolar mandibular nerve in the region of the infratemporal fossa. These two nerves generally passed between the lateral and medial pterygoid muscles to their terminal sites. In cases of extremely large lateral laminae the nerves had to make a curve in their course, following the shape of the enlarged lamina. During contraction of the pterygoid muscles both nerves can be compressed. Since the lingual nerve runs between muscular elements, tension and compression is probably avoided. In contrast, the mandibular nerve fixed between the oval and mandibular foramina cannot avoid tension and compression. The result is possible pain, especially during chewing, and may finally create a trigeminal neuralgia. Similar symptoms could be provoked by a foramen pterygospinale or ovalis canal replacing the foramen ovale.

Summary:  The objective of the study is to establish recovery results of tibial nerve defects reconstructed using allogeneic and xenogeneic graft, in host immunosuppressed with Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and Lymphocyte Function Antigen-1 (LFA-1) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). A pilot study was conducted in fifteen Fischer rats by forming a 1 cm right tibial nerve gap, then reconstructing it with 1.2 cm long grafts, namely, Wistar allogeneic, Black mouse xenogeneic, and syngeneic (n=5/group). The main study included forty-eight rats allocated to the following groups (n=12/group): 1) Allograft without treatment as control group. 2) Allograft with intraperitoneal ICAM-1 and LFA-1 mAbs treatment. 3) Allograft preserved in Belzers' solution including ICAM-1 mAbs plus standard intraperitoneal treatment. 4) Syngraft as benchmark. At 3, 6 and 9 weeks postengraftment walking track analysis was performed and expressed as Tibial Functional Index (TFI). Motor and compound nerve action potential across the graft conduction velocities were measured at week 10. Xenograft did not show any functional recovery and was therefore excluded from main study. However, pilot and main study results showed recovery results in both treated allogeneic groups and were comparable to benchmark syngraft. Therefore, allogeneic nerve graft could be an alternative in peripheral nerve reconstruction and spinal cord grafting.

Experimental data are presented on charged particle multiplicities production in interactions of 300 GeV/c negative poins with emulsion nuclei. Correlations were established and the obtained parameters of multiplicity distributions compared with those obtained from proton-nucleus interaction data at 300 GeV/c.

The development of the cribriform plate and lamina mediana was studied in macerated isolated ethmoid bones in specimens from late fetal life to the stage of its final shape (60 specimens). From fetal life to the first year of age, the ethmoid bone consisted of two separate symmetrical halves which had joined together by the end of the first year. Each half of the future ethmoid bone incorporated the superior, middle and occasionally also the supreme nasal concha. The ossification of the cribriform plate started in the new-born where it initially displayed a vertical position but became horizontal in the course of the first year. At the end of the first year both halves of the ethmoid bone had been united by the formation of the crista galli, lamina mediana and complete ossification of the cribriform plate. The lamina mediana reached its final shape by ten years of age. Each half of the ethmoid bone displayed furrows for the fila olfactoria in the region of the superior and occasionally also of the anterior part of the middle nasal concha. The furrows run in a postero-anterior direction. In the course of our investigations we found three cases where all three nasal conchae formed a unique block thus proving the common origin of these structures from the cartilaginous nasal capsule.

The densitometric studies of the bone sections through the osseous separating wall between the basal coil of the cochlea and the internal auditory meatus show that independently of the thickness of this wall the calciumcontent diminishes significantly with age.

After a short review of developmental data concerning the head and neck arteries, the normal conditions, variations and malformations of single arteries are described. Special attention is paied to the skeletotopic and topographic relations of the arteries. In every bigger vessel its lenght, position, origin and branches are described, and in most cases are also demonstrated by diagrams and tables. As the aortic arch may also reach the neck region, its variation and malformations as well as the variations of its branches are mentioned. The variations and the malformations of the inominate artery, of the common carotid artery, as well as of the external and internal carotid arteries are described. The practical importance of these variations is stressed. Upon description of variations and malformations anatomical, surgical und roentgenological findings described in literature, as well as personal experiences are considered. Special attention has been paied to the variations of the circulus arteriosus Willisi, to the persistence of the presegmental arteries and to the possibility of formation of a by-pass in occlusion or aplasia of cerebral arteries. The position of the subclavian artery, its variations and the variations of its branches are described. After a short embryological introduction, the variations of the venous system and its anastomoses are described. At the end, the main variations of the big lymphatic vessels in the neck are mentioned.

The variations of the nose and paranasal sinuses and variations of arterial system can make difficult and even dangerous the transmaxillar, endonasal, transpalatinal and transsphenoidal access to the ganglion pterygopalatinum and N. vidianus. From anatomical and functional point of view is the transtemporal extradural resection of the N. petrous superficialis major because of rare and easily visible variations the most advantageous intervention. Die Variationen der Nase und der Nasennebenhöhlen und die Variationen des Arteriensystems erschweren und komplizieren beim transmaxillären, endonasalen, transpalatinalen und transsphenoidalen Zugang die Operation am Ganglion pterygopalatinum und N. vidianus. Die funktionell am günstigsten und wegen wenigen Variationen am vorteilhaftesten ist die transtemporale extradurale Durchtrennung des N. petrosus superficialis major.

Three hundred macerated and partly isolated postmortem mid-facial bones were studied for the development, variations and dimensions of the structures of the nasal cavity. On 184 axial CT scans of bones (102 male, 82 female) from patients ranging in age from 1 to 90 years old, the dimensions of the ethmoid labyrinth and sphenoid sinus were studied in detail in order to determine which anatomic situation might be unsafe during clinical endoscopic interventions. Six anatomic variations were identified. Most unsafe for surgery seemed to be the following types: type 111, in which the anterior diameter of the ethmoid labyrinth was large and the posterior ethmoid and sphenoid diameters were relatively narrow; type V, in which both ethmoid dimensions were large and the sphenoid diameter was narrow: type VI, in which the ethmoid labyrinth had an “hour-glass” shape. Present findings indicate that CT orientation before any endoscopic intervention might help to avoid serious complications.

Measurements of trace element concentrations within bones in nasal cavity and labyrinth have shown large variations, both with a single bone and between different bones of a same individual. Factors that influence trace element levels include: metabolic activity, environmental effects, sex, and age. Detection of characteristic X-rays has been shown to be a convenient method for the measurement of concentration profiles, micropixe for micrometer variations, and X-ray centration profiles, micropixe for micrometer variations, and X-ray fluorescence for millimeter variations.

The induced pseudotensor contribution to 0− → 0+ and uniqueβ transitions has been analyzed starting from two possible forms of the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian. The role of mesonic corrections and mesonic second-class currents has been discussed

Reactivation from latent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is often associated with conditions of immunosuppression and can result in fatal disease. Whether the maintenance of systemic CMV latency is mainly governed by factors of the infected cell or by immune control functions is unknown. Likewise, the putative immune control mechanisms which could prevent the induction and spread of recurrent CMV infection are not clearly identified. We took advantage of latently infected B cell–deficient mice and a sensitive method for virus detection to study CMV reactivation after ablation of lymphocyte subsets. A crucial role of both T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells was demonstrated. Within 5 d after depletion of lymphocytes, productive infection occurred in 50% of mice, and 14 d later 100% of mice exhibited recurrent infection. A hierarchy of immune control functions of CD8+, NK, and CD4+ cells was established. Reactivation was rare if only one of the lymphocyte subsets was depleted, but was evident after removal of a further subset, indicating a functional redundancy of control mechanisms. The salivary glands were identified as the site of most rapid virus shedding, followed by the detection of recurrent virus in the lungs, and eventually in the spleen. Our findings document a previously unknown propensity of latent CMV genomes to enter productive infection immediately and with a high frequency after immune cell depletion. The data indicate that only the sustained cellular immune control prevents CMV replication and restricts the viral genome to a systemic state of latency.

The experimental information on the84Kr nuclei is compared with the model calculation in which two neutron holes are coupled to the vibrational field. Based on the lower-order terms of a perturbative expansion of theE2 andM1 transition matrix elements, a simple rule is obtained for the sign and the magnitude of thed (E2/M1) ratios for the transitions between the second and first 2+ states in some vibrational nuclei.

A procedure has been developed for the determination of elemental concentrations in biological samples (bone material) of various shapes and thicknesses. The best irradiation conditions for the used energy dispersive X-ray system were determined. A routine is presented for the quantitative analysis of different biological samples. The application of the procedure to the trace element analysis of auditory ossicles samples is described.

The structure of the odd-mass technetium isotopes is analyzed with the Alaga model which involves the coupling of a three-particle valence-shell cluster to the quadrupole vibrational field. The calculated energy-level sequence and decay properties are consistent with the general trend of the available experimental information although no attempt of the best fit to individual properties was pursued.

Experimental data on interactions of relativistic p, d, He and C nuclei with carbon and tantalum nuclei are presented. The data come from the 2-m propane bubble chamber with an internal tantalum target. It is found that interaction cross sections for carbon projectile fragments with chargesZ=5,6 are 10% greater than expected. In central C+C collisions and in multinucleon interactions of d, He and C with tantalum a contribution is observed from cumulative interactions irreducible to the superposition of NN-collisions taking into account final state interactions, rescattering effects, etc.

Unter 153 untersuchten menschlichen Wirbelsäulen wurde in etwa 80% der Fälle am Körper des II. Brustwirbels ein Höckerchen festgestellt, das daher als Erkennungszeichen dieses Wirbels dienen kann. Es wurde nachgewiesen, daß es durch die untere, regelmäßig sehnige Insertion der medialen Partie des M. longus colli erzeugt wird, und daher wird für dasselbe die Bezeichnung Tuberculum m. longi colli vorgeschlagen.

Bei der Flexion der dreigliedrigen Finger in den Grundgelenken kommt es zu einem gegenseitigen Längsgleiten derselben und zu einer wesentlichen Veränderung ihrer Längenverhältnisse. Es wird der Versuch gemacht, diesen Mechanismus zu erklären.

Es wird gezeigt, daß die charakteristische Form der Kleinhirnoberfläche mit ihren lange, schmalen, überall ziemlich gleichbreiten Windungen sich als Folge der charakteristischen Stellung der Purkinje-Zellen als des wesentlichen Bestandteils der Kleinhirnrinde zwangslos erklären läßt. Die äußere Gestalt ist also durch die innere Struktur bedingt und deswegen wird für diese Erscheinung die Bezeichnung “die Endoplastik des Kleinhirns” vorgeschlagen.

The problem of coexisting deformed and spherical states in Odd-Mass Nuclei is discussed within the framework of the Unified Model. The emphasis is made on the coupling between such states. Numerical calculations were performed for115In. The basic spherical states are either116Sn plus a (proton) hole or114Cd plus a (proton) particle. The agreement between calculated and experimental quantities is rather good.

A low level counting facility equipped with two large Na I(Tl) detectors was used to search for previously reported transitions of 470 and 640 keV in the decay of51Cr. Our results yield upper limits of 1.4× 10−6and 0.95× 10−6transitions/decay for these two transitions, respectively. These limits are now so low as to indicate these levels do not exist in51V.

A method is discussed for solving the RPA equations without discarding any term in the case of separable interactions. It is specialized to the SDI for both spherical and deformed nuclei and applied in two simple examples.
