- Abstract
We investigated the oxidation of oxygen vacancies at the surface of anatase TiO2(001) using a supersonic seeded molecular beam (SSMB) of oxygen. The oxygen vacancies at the top surface and subsurface could be eliminated by the supply of oxygen using an SSMB. Oxygen vacancies are present on the surface of anatase TiO2(001) when it is untreated before transfer to a vacuum chamber. These vacancies, which are stable in the as-grown condition, could also be effectively eliminated by using the oxygen SSMB.

- Abstract
Objective: The study examined diurnal regulation of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) in association with daily stressors, adult day services (ADS) use, and other caregiving characteristics. Method: A sample of 165 family caregivers of individuals with dementia (IWD) completed an 8-day diary study. Caregivers provided 5 saliva samples across the 8 days. On some days, caregivers provided all or most of the care. On other days, their relative attended ADS for part of the day. A 3-level unconditional linear spline model was fit to describe the typical sAA diurnal rhythms. Predictors were then added to the unconditional model to test the hypotheses on ADS use and daily stressors. Results: Daily ADS use did not have an effect on diurnal sAA regulation. However, controlling for daily ADS use, greater ADS use over the 8 days was associated with a more prominent rise between 30 min after wake-up and before lunch, and a more prominent decline between before lunch and late afternoon. Fewer ADS days were associated with a more flattened sAA diurnal rhythm. Additionally, greater daily care-related stressor exposures had a within-person association with lower sAA levels in the late afternoon. Care-related stressor exposures had significant within- and between-person associations with sAA diurnal slopes. Furthermore, daily positive experiences had a significant between-person association with sAA diurnal slopes. Conclusions: Caring for a disabled family member may heighten the vulnerability to potential physiological conditions. Respite from care stressors from ADS use may have some biobehavioral benefits on sAA regulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors conducted a survey of 169 South Korean early childhood education teachers regarding the importance and implementation of strategies associated with the Program-Wide Positive Behavior Support (PWPBS) framework (L. Fox & M. L. Hemmeter, 2009) to support social competence and prevent young children's challenging behavior. Analyses revealed that South Korean early childhood teachers considered the strategies associated with PWPBS to be important; however, they implemented few universal tier practices in their classrooms and reported the presence of few program-wide supports in their early childhood programs. Based on these results, suggestions for the adoption of PWPBS in South Korea and other countries outside of the United States are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: The study examined associations of intrinsic fluctuation in daily negative affect (i.e., depression and anger) with adult day service (ADS) use, daily experiences, and other caregiving characteristics. Methods: This was an 8-day diary of 173 family caregivers of individuals with dementia. Multilevel models with common within-person variance were fit first to show average associations between daily stressors and mean level of daily affect. Then multilevel models with heterogeneous within-person variance were fit to test the hypotheses on associations between ADS use, daily experiences, and intrinsic fluctuation in daily affect. Results: The study showed that, when the sum of ADS days was greater than average, there was a stabilizing effect of ADS use on caregivers' within-person fluctuation in negative affect. Moreover, fewer daily stressors and greater-than-average daily care-related stressors, more positive events, not being a spouse, greater-than-average duration of caregiving, and less-than-average dependency of individuals with dementia on activities of daily living were associated with less fluctuation. Better sleep quality was associated with less intrinsic fluctuation in anger; and younger age and more years of education were associated with less intrinsic fluctuation in daily depression. Conclusions: Because emotional stability has been argued as an aspect of emotional well-being in the general populations, intrinsic fluctuation of emotional experience was suggested as an outcome of evidence-based interventions for family caregivers. - Abstract
Landscape change has been largely influenced by human activities, especially in recent days. Population growth and various development activities caused significant change in landcover. Furthermore, industrialization and urbanization have created man-made barriers such as roads and railroads, which fragment ecosystems, thereby threatening biological richness and diversity. Fragmentation is recognized as one of the major anthropogenic changes of landscape. Fragmentation is defined as progressive division of large, comparatively homogeneous tracts of forest into a heterogeneous mixture of much smaller patches (Reed et al. 1996a, b). Consequences of fragmentation include habitat loss for some plant and animal species, habitat creation for others, decreased connectivity of the remaining vegetation, decreased patch size, increased distance between patches, and an increase in edge at the expense of interior habitat (Reed et al. 1996a). Change of landscape structure including fragmentation began to draw attention in ecosystem management because it is recognized that the spatial arrangement of elements in a landcover mosaic controls the ecological process which operate within it (Haines-Young et al. 1996, Ruzicka et al. 1990, Forman 1990, Forman 1995). To achieve the management goals such as conservation of species or natural resources, accurate information characterizing landscape structure and its change is critical prerequisite. However, at the level of landscape, it is very time-consuming and labor-intensive survey that spatially explicit and temporal databases are developed and managed on the basis of traditional technology. The dramatic expansion of spatial and temporal scales at which many environmental problems must be considered has presented another difficult quantitative challenge (Turner et al. 1991). Fortunately, some recent achievements in the field of landscape ecology offer an opportunity on this problem. As one of these achievements, many investigators have been trying to quantify and evaluate the landscape using landscape indices with RS (Remote Sensing) and GIS (Geographic Information System) technology (Haines-Young and Chopping 1996). The major objectives of this study were to quantify forest fragmentation in the Han River Basin, which has been subject to urbanization and road construction during the past years, from 1983 to 1996. - Abstract
Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are monitoring the sky and collecting gravitational-wave strain data with sufficient sensitivity to detect signals routinely. In this paper we describe the data recorded by these instruments during their first and second observing runs. The main data products are gravitational-wave strain time series sampled at 16384 Hz. The datasets that include this strain measurement can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at http://gw-openscience.org, together with data-quality information essential for the analysis of LIGO and Virgo data, documentation, tutorials, and supporting software.
