- Abstract
Retracted publications are an often-overlooked issue affecting the scientific community, and recent data confirms the overall number of retracted publications is rising. While this has previously been looked at within orthopaedic surgery, a contemporary understanding of retractions is required due to the rapid expansion in publications. Our study aimed to assess the retracted publications within clinical orthopaedic research to evaluate for characteristics and trends. A systematic review was conducted on December 14, 2023, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. There were 4 databases that were queried to identify retracted publications in clinical orthopaedics that assessed operative and nonoperative orthopaedic interventions (excluding basic science). Articles were independently screened by 2 reviewers; those meeting the inclusion criteria were evaluated for various characteristics, including reasons for retraction based on Committee on Publication Ethics guidelines. There were 233 studies that met the inclusion criteria and were retracted between January 1, 1990, and December 14, 2023. Clinical orthopaedics represented 1.18% of all retracted publications identified through PubMed over this period. There were 87 articles that were retracted in 2023, up from 17 in 2022 (a 412% increase). Retracted studies were published in journals with 2022 impact factors up to 9.3, with an average of 3.1 (SD [standard deviation] 1.9). A total of 39.5% of the retracted studies were published in orthopaedic journals, and 60.9% of the retracted articles were published in exclusively open-access journals. The mean time from electronic publication to retraction was 2.1 years (SD 2.2). Retracted articles have been cited up to 180 times (mean 8.6; SD 20). Reasons for retraction included misconduct (45.9%), plagiarism (11.6%), redundant publication (11.6%), unethical research (10.3%), error (9.4%), and others (10.7%). The prevalence of retractions in the clinical orthopaedic literature is increasing. Clinical research is the basis for clinical practice guidelines, the gold standard for informing medical decision-making. Retractions may be one harbinger of lower-quality publications; researchers, institutions, and journals together play important roles in maintaining scientific integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The epigenetic cofactor ENL (eleven-nineteen-leukemia) and the acetyltransferase MOZ (monocytic leukemia zinc finger) have vital roles in transcriptional regulation and are implicated in aggressive forms of leukemia. Here, we describe the mechanistic basis for the intertwined association of ENL and MOZ. Genomic analysis shows that ENL and MOZ co-occupy active promoters and that MOZ recruits ENL to its gene targets. Structural studies reveal a multivalent assembly of ENL at the intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of MOZ. While the extraterminal (ET) domain of ENL recognizes the canonical ET-binding motif in IDR, the YEATS domains of ENL and homologous AF9 bind to a set of acetylation sites in the MOZ IDR that are generated by the acetyltransferase CBP (CREB-binding protein). Our findings suggest a multifaceted acetylation-dependent and independent coupling of ENL, MOZ and CBP/p300, which may contribute to leukemogenic activities of the ENL–MOZ assembly and chromosomal translocations of ENL, MOZ and CBP/p300.

- Abstract
This work describes a new hybrid colorimetric sensor instrument that combines a monochromator and a polychromator to achieve high spectral resolution in a reduced size, at low cost and ease of use. The system design uses an integrated subsystem approach with optical spectrometry, microfluidic micromixing, and microsampling components, emphasizing autonomous sample manipulation and analysis. A comprehensive description of the sensor’s design is presented, detailing the optical, microfluidic, electronic, and mechanical aspects. This compact and autonomous sensor heralds promising applications across chemistry, with a comparable accuracy to that of commercial instruments. The reported theoretical resolution of the polychromator is 0.24 nm while the measured resolving power is 100 for a bandwidth of 118 nm centered at 557.7 nm. The monochromator has a 16-bit resolution for a bandpass of 10 nm. The average difference between the measured absorbance curves by a Cary-7000 commercial spectrometer and our instrument is 14.55 (

- Abstract
Men of African descent have the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates, yet the genetic basis of prostate cancer in African men has been understudied. We used genomic data from 3,963 cases and 3,509 controls from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda to infer ancestry-specific genetic architectures and fine-map disease associations. Fifteen independent associations at 8q24.21, 6q22.1 and 11q13.3 reached genome-wide significance, including four new associations. Intriguingly, multiple lead associations are private alleles, a pattern arising from recent mutations and the out-of-Africa bottleneck. These African-specific alleles contribute to haplotypes with odds ratios above 2.4. We found that the genetic architecture of prostate cancer differs across Africa, with effect size differences contributing more to this heterogeneity than allele frequency differences. Population genetic analyses reveal that African prostate cancer associations are largely governed by neutral evolution. Collectively, our findings emphasize the utility of conducting genetic studies that use diverse populations.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore decision making in non-profit sport organization Boards. Data were gathered from 36 non-participant overt observations of nonprofit sport organization Board meetings, 18 semi-structured interviews, and over 6,000 document pages. Sixty-six decisions were identified from the observations, on which a hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted. Results indicated two clusters, Concise and Expanded decision making, whereby the former had a shorter duration and fewer information sources, interactions, and delays than the latter. A contemporary taxonomy is developed with characteristics to describe decision making related to decision length, delays, interactions, and information sources for Boards at different systemic levels. Knowing how they make decisions allows non-profit (sport) organization Boards to better navigate their decision-making endeavours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to compare short-term functional outcomes and conversion rates to reverse shoulder arthroplasty between patients who underwent total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) using a modular metal-backed glenoid component, a hybrid glenoid component, and an all-polyethylene component. A retrospective review of individuals undergoing TSA between October 2014 and December 2020 was performed. Inclusion criteria included patients undergoing primary TSA for osteoarthritis during this time frame by 1 surgeon. Preoperative and postoperative variables included demographic information, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score (ASES), and range of motion. Revision rates were also documented. Summary statistics were performed, using a 1-way analysis of variance with Tukey post hoc pairwise comparisons when the outcome reached significance. Fifty-two patients were included with age averaging 68 ± 8.1 years, with body mass index of 31 ± 5.8. 54% of patients were female with 12% having diabetes and only 2% were smokers. Follow-up averaged 42 months with patients undergoing metal-backed glenoid having longer follow-up at 56.5 months (P <.001). ASES, forward elevation, and external rotation (ER) for every implant type improved significantly postoperatively (P <.001) besides internal rotation and ER within the poly group (P =.072). No difference was found between the 3 groups for preoperative and postoperative ASES scores, forward elevation, internal rotation, and ER (P >.05). Two patients within the poly group required revision due to rotator cuff tear (P =.225). At 2 years, functional outcomes and patient-reported outcomes are similar in all 3 glenoid groups. There were slightly higher revision rates within the all-polyethylene group. If outcomes are similar among all groups, modular implant systems may be favorable to make conversion to revision TSA easier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Few studies have focused on identifying distinctive strategies implemented for overcoming return-to-work (RTW) barriers perceived by people with common mental disorders (CMDs), and their impact on RTW. The study aimed to document the strategies used by occupational therapists to overcome RTW obstacles identified by people with CMDs, and to explore the impact of these strategies on employees' self-efficacy. Method: Ten workers followed by three occupational therapists were recruited for this study. Based on the participants' ROSES scores, the occupational therapists identified in a logbook the dimensions to be worked on and the strategies they implemented for each dimension. Data was analyzed with the use of thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. Results: Three dimensions of the ROSES were most frequently targeted by the occupational therapists: job demands, fear of relapse and difficult relation with the immediate supervisor. The main strategies used to overcome these obstacles were work-oriented and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-based interventions. Most of the participants have increased their self-efficacy for RTW after using these strategies. Eighty percent of the participants returned to work at the end of the study. Conclusion: The use of work-oriented and CBT-based interventions by occupational therapists appears to be useful in improving participants' self-efficacy and promoting their return to work. - Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) recurs in 40% of patients. In addition to stage, factors known to affect recurrence risk include: sex, immunosuppression, unknown primary status, age, site of primary tumor, and time since diagnosis. Create a multivariable model and web-based calculator to predict MCC recurrence risk more accurately than stage alone. Data from 618 patients in a prospective cohort were used in a competing risk regression model to estimate recurrence risk using stage and other factors. In this multivariable model, the most impactful recurrence risk factors were: American Joint Committee on Cancer stage (P <.001), immunosuppression (hazard ratio 2.05; P <.001), male sex (1.59; P =.003) and unknown primary (0.65; P =.064). Compared to stage alone, the model improved prognostic accuracy (concordance index for 2-year risk, 0.66 vs 0.70; P <.001), and modified estimated recurrence risk by up to 4-fold (18% for low-risk stage IIIA vs 78% for high-risk IIIA over 5 years). Lack of an external data set for model validation. As demonstrated by this multivariable model, accurate recurrence risk prediction requires integration of factors beyond stage. An online calculator based on this model (at merkelcell.org/recur) integrates time since diagnosis and provides new data for optimizing surveillance for MCC patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. DECISION MAKING IN NON-PROFIT SPORT ORGANIZATION BOARDS: EXPLORING THE ROLE OF INTERNAL BOARD-LEVEL FACTORS.

- Abstract
This study explored the role of internal board-level factors in non-profit sport organization (NPSO) boards' decision making. Featuring six Canadian NPSO boards as cases, data were gathered from 36 observations of board meetings, 18 semi-structured interviews (Chief Executive Officers [CEO], Chairs, and individual board members), and over 900 documents, then thematically analyzed. Results identified five internal board-level factors important for NPSO board decision making: meeting practices, board size, Chair-CEO relationship, Chair collective leadership, and board competencies. These internal factors' role varied depending on the decision-making constructs, namely duration, flow, interaction, and scrutiny. Results suggest NPSO boards should recruit individuals with different competencies as these represented an important internal information source. NPSO boards should be cautious when implementing virtual meetings for their decision making because it can inhibit the involvement of individual members (i.e., interaction). Theoretically, results suggest sport governance researchers should consider a multi-perspective approach when examining internal board-level factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Nucleases present a formidable barrier to the application of nucleic acids in biology, significantly reducing the lifetime of nucleic acid-based drugs. Here, we develop a novel methodology to protect DNA and RNA from nucleases by reconfiguring their supramolecular structure through the addition of a nucleobase mimic, cyanuric acid. In the presence of cyanuric acid, polyadenine strands assemble into triple helical fibers known as the polyA/CA motif. We report that this motif is exceptionally resistant to nucleases, with the constituent strands surviving for up to 1 month in the presence of serum. The conferred stability extends to adjacent non-polyA sequences, albeit with diminishing returns relative to their polyA sections due to hypothesized steric clashes. We introduce a strategy to regenerate stability through the introduction of free polyA strands or positively charged amino side chains, enhancing the stability of sequences of varied lengths. The proposed protection mechanism involves enzyme failure to recognize the unnatural polyA/CA motif, coupled with the motif’s propensity to form long, bundling supramolecular fibers. The methodology provides a fundamentally new mechanism to protect nucleic acids from degradation using a supramolecular approach and increases lifetime in serum to days, weeks, or months.

The prevalence of open access varies according to many factors, including the types of documentary objects and the requirements set by funding agencies. The art world presents particular documentation challenges, including a complex ecosystem of knowledge producers that extends beyond the walls of the academic community. This article examines open access in the contemporary art world. Using two case studies of the dissemination of open-access textual materials in the thematic digital repository e-artexte, the authors demonstrate that open-access digital self-archiving practices, whereby authors, publishers, and artists may submit a digital version of a publication directly to a repository where it is made available to the public, can provide more equitable and inclusive accessibility to contemporary art information, and amplify the voices of underrepresented artists, curators, and authors in the field.

- Abstract
Background: Chronic pelvic pain is a complex condition. Few studies have focused on patient expectations of diagnosis and treatment in female chronic pelvic pain populations. Not knowing this information can lead to disparity and frustration between provider care and patient expectations resulting in poor patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore patient expectations and understanding of diagnosis prior to engaging in an interdisciplinary pelvic pain program. Methods: This is a cross sectional study of women enrolled in a tertiary Chronic Pain Center pelvic pain program in May 2019. Data were extracted from intake questionnaires to classify demographic variables and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Expectations and diagnoses were clustered in themes. Student’s t-test was used to compare biomedical focus and biopsychosocial focus groups to the Pain Disability Index (PDI) and the EQ-5D results, and to compare self-reported diagnoses with treatment expectations between groups. Results: When asked about perceived diagnosis, 74% reported a gynecologic cause for their pain, 25.7% reported musculoskeletal causes, and 21.9% reported other health conditions. For treatment expectations: 46.6% believed they required rehabilitation, 30.8% responded “I don’t know”, and 21.2% reported perceived need for medication. There was no difference in PDI or EQ-5D scores between patients who identified perceived treatment options and those who reported “I don’t know”.Conclusions: Most patients identified a perceived cause for their pain, but there was uncertainty and ambiguity about treatment options. Understanding and addressing the perception and expectations of individuals is imperative to patient-centered care and can lead to improved outcomes.

- Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is often treated with surgery and postoperative radiation therapy (PORT). The optimal time to initiate PORT (Time-to-PORT [ttPORT]) is unknown. We assessed if delays in ttPORT were associated with inferior outcomes. Competing risk regression was used to evaluate associations between ttPORT and locoregional recurrence (LRR) for patients with stage I/II MCC in a prospective registry and adjust for covariates. Distant metastasis and death were competing risks. The cohort included 124 patients with median ttPORT of 41 days (range: 8-125 days). Median follow-up was 55 months. 17 (14%) patients experienced a LRR, 14 (82%) of which arose outside the radiation field. LRR at 5 years was increased for ttPORT >8 weeks vs ≤ 8 weeks, 28.0% vs 9.2%, P =.006. There was an increase in the cumulative incidence of MCC-specific death with increasing ttPORT (HR = 1.14 per 1-week increase, P =.016). The relatively low number of LRRs limited the extent of our multivariable analyses. Delay of PORT was associated with increased LRR, usually beyond the radiation field. This is consistent with the tendency of MCC to spread quickly via lymphatics. Initiation of PORT within 8 weeks was associated with improved locoregional control and MCC-specific survival. - Abstract
The influence of habitat and environmental conditions on Great Lakes coregonine reproduction is not well described, in part, because we lack sampling gears for early life stages that are effective across habitats. We designed new egg and larval emergence traps to quantify coregonine reproductive success across variable depths and substrates and tested them in laboratory and field settings. In the laboratory, our new metal ring egg traps had greater egg retention (94–100%) and faster post-catch processing (5–7 min) relative to a commonly employed fiber mat trap (30–67% and 30–60 min). In Lake Ontario's Chaumont Bay, egg densities for lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis (0–5,832 eggs m
−2 ) and cisco Coregonus artedi (0–426,501 eggs m−2 ) measured with metal ring traps (n = 112) varied across habitats but were greatest between 2–5 m on rock and dreissenid mussel substrates. Emergence traps used an inverted cone, fine mesh, and a clear collection chamber to capture positively phototactic emerging larvae. In the laboratory, traps captured 69–80% of emerged larvae. In Chaumont Bay, emergence traps deployed for 21 days after ice out caught only cisco larvae. Emergence rates varied across habitats (0–118 larvae m−2 day−1 , n = 85) but were highest on dreissenid mussel reef substrate. Our samplers improved processing efficiency and facilitated large sample sizes to quantify variability in egg deposition densities and emergence rates across habitats. These methods can advance coregonine conservation by determining how anthropogenic changes to habitat and environmental conditions influence incubation success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The Lake Ontario cisco Coregonus artedi population declined in the 20th century, and restoration of this species is a management objective. Management tools to restore cisco are limited because little is known about cisco spawning behavior and habitat use. We tagged 76 cisco from a remnant population in Chaumont Bay, Lake Ontario with acoustic transmitters and characterized seasonal habitat use from 2016 to 2021. We also used fine-scale acoustic telemetry, coregonine egg collections, and trap net catches to better understand cisco spawning behaviors related to spawn timing and site selection. Network analysis and Bayesian standard ellipse area indicated that cisco utilization of lake regions and bathythermal niche space varied by season. During spawning season, male cisco concentrated in Chaumont Bay over shallow (∼3 m) rocky shoals where cisco egg deposition was the greatest. Spawning site fidelity to Chaumont Bay was observed for all male cisco surviving to successive years (n = 23). Acoustic-tagged females did not survive consecutive spawning seasons, but trap net catches indicated females were less abundant and occupied spawning areas for less time than males. Post spawn, some individual male cisco (n = 5/23) had differential, yet consistent, annual migrations to separate regions of Lake Ontario, suggesting fidelity to feeding sites. Our results reveal seasonal habitats used by male cisco and, importantly, caution that environmental changes to a single spawning site could negatively affect the remnant Chaumont Bay cisco population. Specialized conservation efforts may be necessary when cisco spawning aggregations have diverse post-spawn migratory behaviors but a central spawning ground. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
IMPORTANCE: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer. Of the patients who develop MCC annually, only 4% are younger than 50 years. OBJECTIVE: To identify genetic risk factors for early-onset MCC via genomic sequencing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The study represents a multicenter collaboration between the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and the University of Washington. Participants with early-onset and later-onset MCC were prospectively enrolled in an institutional review board–approved study at the University of Washington between January 2003 and May 2019. Unrelated controls were enrolled in the NIAID Centralized Sequencing Program (CSP) between September 2017 and September 2021. Analysis was performed from September 2021 and March 2023. Early-onset MCC was defined as disease occurrence in individuals younger than 50 years. Later-onset MCC was defined as disease occurrence at age 50 years or older. Unrelated controls were evaluated by the NIAID CSP for reasons other than familial cancer syndromes, including immunological, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: This case-control analysis included 1012 participants: 37 with early-onset MCC, 45 with later-onset MCC, and 930 unrelated controls. Among 37 patients with early-onset MCC, 7 (19%) had well-described variants in genes associated with cancer predisposition. Six patients had variants associated with hereditary cancer syndromes (ATM = 2, BRCA1 = 2, BRCA2 = 1, and TP53 = 1) and 1 patient had a variant associated with immunodeficiency and lymphoma (MAGT1). Compared with 930 unrelated controls, the early-onset MCC cohort was significantly enriched for cancer-predisposing pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in these 5 genes (odds ratio, 30.35; 95% CI, 8.89-106.30; P < .001). No germline disease variants in these genes were identified in 45 patients with later-onset MCC. Additional variants in DNA repair genes were also identified among patients with MCC. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Because variants in certain DNA repair and cancer predisposition genes are associated with early-onset MCC, genetic counseling and testing should be considered for patients presenting at younger than 50 years.

- Abstract
Recessive and de novo mutations in the TRIOgene are associated with intellectual deficiency (ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental epileptic encephalopathies (DEE). TRIO is a dual guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) that activates Rac1, Cdc42 and RhoA. Trio has been extensively studied in excitatory neurons, and has recently been found to regulate the switch from tangential to radial migration in GABAergic interneurons (INs) through GEFD1-Rac1-dependent SDF1α/CXCR4 signaling. Given the central role of Rho-GTPases during neuronal migration and the implication of IN pathologies in ASD and DEE, we investigated the relative roles of both Trio’s GEF domains in regulating the dynamics of INs tangential migration. In Trio–/–mice, we observed reduced numbers of tangentially migrating INs, with intact progenitor proliferation. Further, we noted increased growth cone collapse in developing INs, suggesting altered cytoskeleton dynamics. To bypass the embryonic mortality of Trio–/–mice, we generated Dlx5/6Cre;Trioc/cconditional mutant mice (TriocKO), which develop spontaneous seizures and behavioral deficits reminiscent of ASD and ID. These phenotypes are associated with reduced cortical IN density and functional cortical inhibition. Mechanistically, this reduction of cortical IN numbers reflects a premature switch to radial migration, with an aberrant early entry in the cortical plate, as well as major deficits in cytoskeletal dynamics, including enhanced leading neurite branching and slower nucleokinesis reflecting reduced actin filament condensation and turnover as well as a loss of response to the motogenic effect of EphA4/ephrin A2 reverse signaling. Further, we show that both Trio GEFD1 and GEFD2 domains are required for proper IN migration, with a dominant role of the RhoA-activating GEFD2 domain. Altogether, our data show a critical role of the DEE/ASD-associated Triogene in the establishment of cortical inhibition and the requirement of both GEF domains in regulating IN migration dynamics.

- Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were immobilized on single-layered α-zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanosheets as a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst. The nanoparticles were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS), UV–Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The characterizations showed that the Au NPs with a size distribution of 2.0 ± 1.0 nm were uniformly dispersed and immobilized on single-layer ZrP nanosheets. The supported AuNPs could serve as an effective catalyst for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Graphical abstract.

- Abstract
JADE is a core subunit of the HBO1 acetyltransferase complex that regulates developmental and epigenetic programs and promotes gene transcription. Here we describe the mechanism by which JADE facilitates recruitment of the HBO1 complex to chromatin and mediates its enzymatic activity. Structural, genomic and complex assembly in vivo studies show that the PZP (PHD1–zinc-knuckle–PHD2) domain of JADE engages the nucleosome through binding to histone H3 and DNA and is necessary for the association with chromatin targets. Recognition of unmethylated H3K4 by PZP directs enzymatic activity of the complex toward histone H4 acetylation, whereas H3K4 hypermethylation alters histone substrate selectivity. We demonstrate that PZP contributes to leukemogenesis, augmenting transforming activity of the NUP98–JADE2 fusion. Our findings highlight biological consequences and the impact of the intact JADE subunit on genomic recruitment, enzymatic function and pathological activity of the HBO1 complex.

- Abstract
The transferability and clinical value of genetic risk scores (GRSs) across populations remain limited due to an imbalance in genetic studies across ancestrally diverse populations. Here we conducted a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study of 156,319 prostate cancer cases and 788,443 controls of European, African, Asian and Hispanic men, reflecting a 57% increase in the number of non-European cases over previous prostate cancer genome-wide association studies. We identified 187 novel risk variants for prostate cancer, increasing the total number of risk variants to 451. An externally replicated multi-ancestry GRS was associated with risk that ranged from 1.8 (per standard deviation) in African ancestry men to 2.2 in European ancestry men. The GRS was associated with a greater risk of aggressive versus non-aggressive disease in men of African ancestry (P= 0.03). Our study presents novel prostate cancer susceptibility loci and a GRS with effective risk stratification across ancestry groups.

- Abstract
This paper demonstrates that overnight returns are subject to highly persistent biases and examines the profitability of overnight‐only investments in that context. Overnight returns tend to exceed their intraday counterparts, and the paper first reconciles these patterns by introducing a model that factors in systematic biases. This model identifies one‐fifth of stocks as having positive and statistically significant overnight biases. Investing overnight in these stocks in the next year yields twice the market's return for a third of the market beta. Results also have implications for daytime investors as these stocks underperform intraday. Implementation costs and issues are discussed.

- Abstract
The effect of biological sex on the outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains unclear. Accounting for biological sex in research is crucial for reproducibility and accuracy. Average combined data may mask sex-related variation and obscure clinically relevant differences in outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate hospital and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after THA by biological sex to elucidate differences and ultimately provide more equitable care. We performed a retrospective review of patients undergoing primary THA at a single large academic center between January 2013 and August 2020. Demographics, operative variables, hospital outcomes, and PROMs were compared between men and women patients. The PROMs included preoperative, 6-weeks, 6-months, and 1-year Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation, Visual Analog Scale, Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Joint Replacement, University of California, Los Angeles, and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System mental and physical scores, as well as satisfaction scores. A total of 6,418 patients were included (55% women). Women were older (P <.001), had a lower body mass index (P <.001), and were more likely to have public insurance (P <.001). Fewer women were discharged to home or self-care (P <.001). Women had higher rates of cementation (P <.001) and fracture within 90 days (P <.001), and these associations remained significant with adjusted multivariable analyses. Women had significantly higher pain and lower functional scores preoperatively; postoperatively, most PROMs were equivalent. Important differences were observed in several areas. Demographic parameters differed, and a variable effect of biological sex was observed on surgical and hospital outcomes. Women had an increased incidence of cemented femoral components (indicated for osteoporotic bone) and postoperative fractures. Women's PROMs demonstrated globally lower functional scores and higher pain preoperatively. Differences attributed to sex should continue to be investigated and accounted for in risk-stratification models. Future studies are needed to elucidate the underlying causes of observed biological sex differences and are essential for equitable arthroplasty care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In the immediate aftermath of Reconstruction, coverage of executions in the Atlanta Constitutionand the New Orleans (Times-)Picayuneoccasionally portrayed African Americans executed by the state as legally, politically, and spiritually similar to their white counterparts. But as radical white supremacy took hold across the South, the coverage changed. Through an analysis of 667 newspaper articles covering the executions of Black and white men in Georgia and Louisiana from 1877 to 1936, I found that as lynching became the principal form of lethal punishment in the South, accounts of Black men’s legal executions shrank in length and journalists increasingly portrayed them as ciphers, nonentities that the state was dispatching with little fanfare. In contrast, accounts of white men’s executions continued to showcase their individuality and their membership in social, political, and religious communities. A significant gap between the material reality and the cultural representation of capital punishment emerged. Legal executions in Georgia and Louisiana overwhelmingly targeted Black men. But on the pages of each state’s most prominent newspaper, the executions of white men received the most attention. As a result, capital punishment was increasingly represented as a high-status punishment that respected the “whiteness” of those who suffered it.

The purpose of this study was to examine changes in sport event volunteers' motivation, satisfaction, commitment, and sense of community from preevent to postevent. Data were collected using preevent and postevent online self-administered questionnaires sent to 256 volunteers at the 2019 Osprey Valley Open: a professional golf tournament. One hundred sixty-one volunteers (65% response rate) completed both questionnaires. Data were analyzed using paired sample t tests. All constructs demonstrated positive changes from preevent to postevent. Sense of community had the most significant positive change, followed by satisfaction, and then commitment. Motivation did not have a statistically significant change. Results show researchers should move beyond crosssectional research designs to better understand differences in these constructs across event modes. Practitioners should tailor their strategies toward volunteers' satisfaction, commitment, and sense of community to enhance their experiences at different time points throughout their involvement with a sport event. - Abstract
Objectives: Hyperthyroidism is a common endocrinopathy affecting middle-aged to elderly cats, with multisystemic repercussions. Hyperthyroid humans show decreased lung compliance and increased cardiac output with subsequent left heart failure leading to pulmonary capillary congestion. Prognosis worsens with the development of increased pulmonary vascular pressures (ie, pulmonary hypertension [PH]) in hyperthyroid humans. The effect of excess thyroid hormone concentration on pulmonary arterial hemodynamics is unknown in cats. Assessing pulmonary vascular pressures in veterinary medicine relies heavily on echocardiographic measurements performed at the level of the heart and pulmonary trunk. This study investigated right-sided cardiac and pulmonary arterial hemodynamics in hyperthyroid cats using echocardiography. Methods: Echocardiographic examinations of hyperthyroid cats identified through a bi-institutional database search were reviewed for the determination of systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and 20 other metrics. Values were compared with those of a healthy cat group using non-parametric statistical analyses. Results: Systolic PAP could not be determined in 23/26 hyperthyroid and 13/14 healthy cats owing to unmeasurable tricuspid regurgitation flow velocity. Hyperthyroid cats were roughly twice as old (P <0.001) and had 2–4-fold higher respiratory rates (P <0.001) than healthy cats. Hyperthyroid cats showed an increase in acceleration time-to-ejection time ratio of pulmonary flow (1.4-fold, P = 0.001), pulmonary artery velocity time integral (1.2–1.6-fold, P = 0.001), maximal pulmonary velocity (1.3–1.7-fold, P = 0.002), stroke volume (1.5-fold, P = 0.001) and cardiac output (1.6-fold, P <0.001) vs healthy cats. None of the other echocardiographic metrics reached statistical significance. Conclusions and relevance: Systolic PAP estimation proved unsuitable as a sole measurement for the assessment of PH in hyperthyroid cats owing to the frequent inability to interrogate tricuspid regurgitant flow velocity. Hyperthyroid cats have altered echocardiographic measures of pulmonary hemodynamics dissimilar to those reported in hyperthyroid humans. Differential effects of thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy on ventricular systolic function may underlie species differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This work presents the design and implementation of a portable optofluidic system for biodetection based on ultrastable gold nanoparticles functionalized with a dopamine-binding aptamer. The automatic sampling and mixing fluidic system integrated into a spectrometer is configured to measure the gold nanoparticles’ plasmon band position. The novel molecule detection method based on ultrastable gold nanoparticles has been previously tested using dopamine as the target molecule. The optofluidic system designed for automatic bathochromic shift detection has an optical resolution of 1 nm using a 50-
