Despite more than half a century of hominin fossil discoveries in eastern Africa, the regional environmental context of hominin evolution and dispersal is not well established due to the lack of continuous palaeoenvironmental records from one of the proven habitats of early human populations, particularly for the Pleistocene epoch. Here we present a 620,000-year environmental record from Chew Bahir, southern Ethiopia, which is proximal to key fossil sites. Our record documents the potential influence of different episodes of climatic variability on hominin biological and cultural transformation. The appearance of high anatomical diversity in hominin groups coincides with long-lasting and relatively stable humid conditions from ~620,000 to 275,000 years bp(episodes 1–6), interrupted by several abrupt and extreme hydroclimate perturbations. A pattern of pronounced climatic cyclicity transformed habitats during episodes 7–9 (~275,000–60,000 years bp), a crucial phase encompassing the gradual transition from Acheulean to Middle Stone Age technologies, the emergence of Homo sapiensin eastern Africa and key human social and cultural innovations. Those accumulative innovations plus the alignment of humid pulses between northeastern Africa and the eastern Mediterranean during high-frequency climate oscillations of episodes 10–12 (~60,000–10,000 years bp) could have facilitated the global dispersal of H. sapiens.

The directly dated RRMarch2021age model (Roberts et al., 2021) for the ∼293 m long composite core from Chew Bahir, southern Ethiopia, has provided a valuable chronology for long-term climate changes in northeastern Africa. However, the age model has limitations on shorter time scales (less than 1–2 precession cycles), especially in the time range <20 kyr BP (kiloyears before present or thousand years before 1950) and between ∼155 and 428 kyr BP. To address those constraints we developed a partially orbitally tuned age model. A comparison with the ODP Site 967 record of the wetness index from the eastern Mediterranean, 3300 km away but connected to the Ethiopian plateau via the River Nile, suggests that the partially orbitally tuned age model offers some advantages compared to the exclusively directly dated age model, with the limitation of the reduced significance of (cross) spectral analysis results of tuned age models in cause-effect studies. The availability of this more detailed age model is a prerequisite for further detailed spatiotemporal correlations of climate variability and its potential impact on the exchange of different populations of Homo sapiensin the region.

ABSTRACTTerrestrial plant macrofossils from the sedimentary record of Lake Suigetsu, Japan, provide the only quasi-continuous direct atmospheric record of radiocarbon (14C) covering the last 50 ka cal BP (Bronk Ramsey et al. 2012). Since then, new high precision data have become available on U-Th dated speleothems from Hulu Cave China, covering the same time range (Cheng et al. 2018). In addition, an updated varve-based chronology has also been published for the 2006 core from Lake Suigetsu (SG06) based on extended microscopic analysis of the sediments and improved algorithms for interpolation (Schlolaut et al. 2018). Here we reanalyze the radiocarbon dataset from Suigetsu based on the new varve counting information and the constraints imposed by the speleothem data. This enables the new information on the calendar age scale of the Suigetsu dataset to be used in the construction of the consensus IntCal calibration curve. Comparison of the speleothem and plant macrofossil records provides insight into the mechanisms underlying the incorporation of carbon into different types of record and the relative strengths of different types of archive for calibration purposes.

High‐resolution single‐channel seismic reflection data and sediment core samples from Lake Tana, Ethiopia, reveal a dynamic Holocene and late Pleistocene history of the lake. The seismic data show a sequence of sediments in excess of 45 m thick with four strong reflection horizons. The horizons are interpreted to be a consequence of climate conditions resulting in complete lake desiccation. The youngest of these surfaces, at a depth of 8–12 m beneath the present lake floor, is dated at about 17 k cal BP and is correlated with desiccation of Lake Victoria during Heinrich event 1. Similar surfaces were mapped at depths of approximately 25, 30 and 45 m below the lake floor, suggesting numerous late‐Pleistocene lowstands. No features within the seismic sections suggest deep‐water depositional environments. Deeply incised channel sequences cut through the near‐surface sediments above the strong lake‐wide reflection horizons and represent periods of significant erosion during the early Holocene. These events are tied to core intervals dated to 8.4 and 12.1 k cal BP, which also correspond to climate change during regional arid periods. On the northern lake margin, the geometry of sediment accumulation suggests recent faulting with associated continuing basin subsidence in this active tectonic region. The seismic and core data from Lake Tana can be summarized as showing a sedimentation history through the Holocene and late‐Pleistocene that reflects the interplay between rapid climate change and long‐term basin subsidence.

The diatom stratigraphy of a 23-m sediment core from Lake Tilo, a maar lake in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, provides a 10,000-yr record of lake salinity and trophic status. Until 5500 14C yr B.P., the phytoplankton was dominated by Aulacoseira granulata,with only minor changes in the abundance of other diatoms; the lake was over 50 m deep, eutrophic, and oligosaline. At 5500 yr B.P., geothermal groundwater inflow, inferred from calcite and silica deposition rates, declined abruptly, and the lake became more oligotrophic, as indicated by a rapid rise in Cyclotella stelligera.About 4500 yr B.P., lake salinity began to increase, reaching approximately its present state ca. 2500 yr B.P., but with a temporary reversal to lower salinity at 4000–3500 yr B.P. The record shows no evidence of salinity increases equivalent to early Holocene low stands of the larger river-fed Rift Valley lakes, probably because of high rates of geothermal groundwater influx. It responded to reduced rainfall at 4500 yr B.P., when levels of the larger lakes also fell, because geothermal groundwater flux had diminished 1000 years earlier, independently of climate. Because geothermal groundwaters can form a significant proportion of a crater lake's hydrological budget and dominate its salinity budget, these results show that variable geothermal groundwater flux can override lake hydrochemical response to climate change. Palaeoclimatic interpretation of palaeosalinity proxies from the sediments of volcanic crater lakes should be approached with caution.

Pollen data from a radiocarbon-dated lake-sediment core from the Middle Atlas of Morocco show that forests of evergreen and winter-deciduous oaks (Quercus rotundifolia, Q. canariensis),present from the start of the Holocene, were invaded at 6200 BP by Cedrus atlantica in low numbers. Two thousand years later, after a short period characterized by higher deciduous oak frequency, Cedrusincreased to its present abundance. These changes may have been in response to increasing effective moisture as summer temperatures decreased with declining northern-hemisphere seasonality, under the influence of precessional forcing. Palaeolimnological data from the same core show that the lake level fell sharply in five 200-400 yr-long arid intervals, but the pollen data show little or no evidence of a vegetational response. This suggests that summer (growing-season) rainfall remained adequate during the dry intervals, whereas depletion of the groundwater aquifer was the result of reduced winter precipitation. Anthropogenic exploitation since c. 1300 BP has had a greater effect on the forest ecosystem than any of the Holocene arid intervals.
