In its first 2 years of operation, the ground‐based Terrestrial gamma ray flash and Energetic Thunderstorm Rooftop Array (TETRA)‐II array of gamma ray detectors has recorded 22 bursts of gamma rays of millisecond‐scale duration associated with lightning. In this study, we present the TETRA‐II observations detected at the three TETRA‐II ground‐level sites in Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Panama together with the simultaneous radio frequency signals from the lightning data sets VAISALA Global Lightning Dataset, VAISALA National Lightning Detection Network, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network, and World Wide Lightning Location Network. The relative timing between the gamma ray events and the lightning activity is a key parameter for understanding the production mechanism(s) of the bursts. The gamma ray time profiles and their correlation with radio sferics suggest that the gamma ray events are initiated by lightning leader activity and are produced near the last stage of lightning leader channel development prior to the lightning return stroke. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of escitalopram (10-20 mg/day) in adult outpatients suffering from major depressive disorder in naturalistic settings. Methods: An open-label, 3-month, surveillance study was conducted in 434 investigative sites in Greece enrolling 5175 patients. Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) scale and patient-rated Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) were used as efficacy measurements and treatment discontinuation rates due to adverse events was used to assess tolerability. Results: Clinically significant improvement in CGI-S scores was recorded after 3 months. At baseline, patients reported marked or extreme disability for work (38%), social life (41%) and family life (37%), whereas after 3 months of treatment, 80.6%, 79.5% and 83.5% of patients indicated either no or mild disability, respectively. Escitalopram had good tolerability, demonstrated by a very low rate of discontinuations due to adverse events. Conclusion: In this large naturalistic study, escitalopram was well tolerated and improved both depressive symptoms and function.

The results of density functional theory energy calculations of bisulfate adsorbed to gold atom clusters are presented and discussed. The gold atom clusters are used to model a gold(111) surface. These calculations involve the Becke three-parameter functional to approximate the exchange energy and the Lee, Yang, and Parr approximation to include the electronic correlation contribution. The structure and stability of the bisulfate ion at different adsorption sites on the gold surface are examined. The bisulfate in its tripod orientation is found to be the most stable configuration due to the direct interaction of each oxygen of the tripod with a gold atom of the surface. The binding of the bisulfate is predominantly electrostatic and is strongly dependent on the local charge of the gold up to second-nearest neighbors from the adsorption site. Additionally, the bisulfate prefers the face-centered cubic 3-fold hollow adsorption site directly above a hollow in the second layer and a gold atom in the third layer.

Electrospray ionization combined with tandem mass spectrometry has been applied to a study of dopamine and 6‐hydroxydopamine, an important neurotransmitter and a well‐known neurotoxin, respectively. Both protonated and deprotonated molecules were observed for the two compounds. Upon collision‐induced dissociation of protonated and deprotonated 6‐hydroxydopamine molecules, the number of fragmentation pathways observed was greater than that observed with protonated and deprotonated dopamine molecules; the greater proclivity to fragment of the former is due to the 6‐substituted hydroxyl group, which is parato the 3‐OH group and orthoto the CH2CH2NH2group. Furthermore, 6‐hydroxydopamine showed a greater propensity to oxidize than did dopamine when sample solutions were kept uncovered in the air for 24 h prior to mass spectrometric examination. Radical structures of the four main oxidation products of 6‐hydroxydopamine have been suggested on the basis of their product ion mass spectra; one or more of these oxidation products may be responsible for the cytotoxic property of 6‐hydroxydopamine.
