There is limited information on carbon sequestration efficiency (CSE) of soil aggregates in upland and paddy soils under long-term fertilization regimes. In a red soil region of southern China, an upland soil experiment started in 1986 and a paddy soil experiment commenced in 1981. These experiments were conducted using different fertilization treatments. After 30 years, soil organic carbon (SOC) content and stock of different aggregate components were analyzed. The results showed that the SOC contents and stocks in upland soil were lower than in paddy soil. In both upland and paddy soils, the SOC contents and stocks of all aggregate components in NPKM (combined treatment with chemical nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) fertilizers and manure) were the highest among all treatments. Compared with CK (no fertilizer), SOC content of all aggregate components in NPKM was increased by 13.21−63.11% and 19.13−73.33% in upland and paddy soils, respectively. Meanwhile, the change rates in SOC stock of all aggregate components in upland soil were lower than in paddy soil, although the change rate of SOC stock of all aggregate components in NPKM was higher than in other treatments. Furthermore, a linear equation could fit the relationships between carbon (C) input and change rate of SOC stock (P<0.05). Results indicated that the sum of CSE from all aggregate components in upland soil (16.02%) was higher than that of paddy soil (15.12%) in the same climatic condition and from the same parent material. However, the CSEs from all aggregates were higher than that of bulk soil, although the result from bulk soil also showed that the CSE of upland soil was higher than that of paddy soil.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is one of the main carbon reservoirs in the terrestrial ecosystem. It is important to study SOC dynamics and effects of organic carbon amendments in paddy fields because of their vest expansion in south China. A study was carried out to evaluate the relationship between the SOC content and organic carbon input under various organic amendments at a long-term fertilization experiment that was established on a red soil under a double rice cropping system in 1981. The treatments included non-fertilization (CK), nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilization in early rice only (NPK), green manure (Astragalus sinicusL.) in early rice only (OM1), high rate of green manure in early rice only (OM2), combined green manure in early rice and farmyard manure in late rice (OM3), combined green manure in early rice, farmyard manure in late rice and rice straw mulching in winter (OM4), combined green manure in early rice and rice straw mulching in winter (OM5). Our data showed that the SOC content was the highest under OM3 and OM4, followed by OM1, OM2 and OM5, then NPK fertilization, and the lowest under non-fertilization. However, our analyses in SOC stock indicated a significant difference between OM3 (33.9 t ha−1) and OM4 (31.8 t ha−1), but no difference between NPK fertilization (27 t ha−1) and non-fertilization (28.1 t ha−1). There was a significant linear increase in SOC over time for all treatments, and the slop of linear equation was greater in organic manure treatments (0.276–0.344 g kg−1yr−1) than in chemical fertilizer (0.216 g kg−1yr−1) and no fertilizer (0.127 g kg−1yr−1).

To improve the application of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, a new Visual Basic-Fortran (VBF) SPH model with the improvements on efficiency and visualizable interface is presented. The VBF SPH model is based on mixed language programming (MLP) method that not only improved SPH model’s efficiency, but also created the interface functions to control and observe the whole simulation. İts general structrue is to compiling the Fortran computing subroutines into Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files and these files will be called by Visual Basic (VB) programs during the calculation. Besides that an improved link-list algorithm, is described detailedly. This algorithm improves the model’s searching efficiency by reducing the number of searching cells. Two classical problems, Flood flow over Dam and Droplet-Impact, are chosen to analyze the VBF SPH model efficiency and distinguish the improvements’ effect. Both of problems are simulated respectively by VBF SPH model and VB model. According to first simulation VBF SPH model is more than 8 times faster than the VB model. And the second simulation refers that the MLP method increased about 7 times efficiency while the improved link-list algorithm increased more than 1 time.

Automatic fare collection system (AFCS) has been widely used for public transport all over the world. However, the Origin-Destination (OD) matrix of each passenger, the most important information, cannot be collected from AFCS since only boarding information is recorded at each bus stop and alighting one is lost. This study develops passenger trajectories estimation to calculate OD matrix by using pre-processed smart card data from AFCS in one city. The results of a rigorous validation with on/off data from a real-world bus route reveal that the proposed model is quite effective and reliable on estimating the OD matrix for identification of the underlying demand pattern of a transit route. The results have shown that the OD estimation from the proposed algorithm match more than 75% with the actual OD pairs. During the peak hours, the matching rate can go up to 85%.

With some popular tracking methods for free surface, simulations of several typical examples are carried out under various flow field conditions. The results show that the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is very suitable in simulating the flow problems with a free surface. A viscous liquid droplet with an initial velocity impacting on a solid surface is simulated based on the SPH method, and the surface tension is considered by searching the free surface particles, the initial impact effect is considered by using the artificial viscosity method, boundary virtual particles and image virtual particles are introduced to deal with the boundary problem, and the boundary defect can be identified quite well. The comparisons of simulated results and experimental photographs show that the SPH method can not only exactly simulate the spreading process and the rebound process of a liquid droplet impacting on a solid surface but also accurately track the free surface particles, simulate the free-surface flow and determine the shape of the free surface due to its particle nature.

Through the study of the theory of oil spill model, a mathematical modeling of oil spill on the sea is developed which with the consideration of spread, diffusion, drifting and attenuation of oil slick is influenced by evaporation and emulsification factors. A model that under the effect of ocean dynamic condition of tide, wind and wave, using Monte Carlo method to simulate the movement of oil slick is established. The modeling is applied to calculate and predict pollution range of oil spill at oil quay and oil ship in Daya Bay. The prediction results have basically shown the pollution situation by emergency of oil spill on the sea.

The risk analysis of urban rainstorm water logging facing Tianjin city by using methods of probability, investigation and numerical simulation was carried out in this article. Firstly, a mathematical model for the urban rainstorm water logging was established on the basis of one- and two-dimensional unsteady flow theory and the technique of non-structural irregular grid division, Secondly, the precipitation over heavy rain was divided into seven grades, the experiential expression of frequency and rain grades was got according to the observed rainfall from May 1918 to October 1998. Thirdly, the mathematical model was used to simulate various rain process according to the features of the rainstorm and the draining rule, based on the simulated maximum water depths, 3 class of disaster extents were established, the disaster risks were mainly in Class I and Class II, The risk analysis of water logging on traffic were primarily evaluated, and finally, some management and mitigation measures of the urban rainstorm water logging disaster were discussed.

Mutations in the tumor suppressor gene PTEN (MMAC1/TEP1) are associated with a large number of human cancers and several autosomal-dominant disorders. Mice mutant for PTEN die at early embryonic stages and the mutant embryonic fibroblasts display decreased sensitivity to cell death. Overexpression of PTEN in different mammalian tissue culture cells affects various processes including cell proliferation, cell death and cell migration. We have characterized the Drosophila PTEN gene and present evidence that both inactivation and overexpression of PTEN affect cell size, while overexpression of PTEN also inhibits cell cycle progression at early mitosis and promotes cell death during eye development in a context-dependent manner. Furthermore, we have shown that PTEN acts in the insulin signaling pathway and all signals from the insulin receptor can be antagonized by either Drosophila or human PTEN, suggesting a potential means for alleviating symptoms associated with altered insulin signaling.

Protein tyrosine phosphatases are involved in the regulation of important cellular processes such as signal transduction, cell cycle progression, and tumor suppression. Here we report the cloning and characterization of PIR1, a novel member in the dual-specificity phosphatase subfamily of the protein tyrosine phosphatases. PIR1 also contains two stretches of arginine-rich sequences. We have shown that the recombinant PIR1 protein possessed an intrinsic phosphatase activity on phosphotyrosine-containing substrate. A unique feature of this phosphatase is that it binds directly to RNAin vitrowith high affinity. In addition, we have found that PIR1 interacted with splicing factors 9G8 and SRp30C, possibly through an RNA intermediate during a yeast two-hybrid screen. PIR1 exhibited a nuclear-staining pattern that was sensitive to RNase A, but not to DNase I, suggesting that PIR1 in the cells are associated with RNA and/or ribonucleoprotein particles. Furthermore, a fraction of PIR1 showed a speckle-staining pattern that superimposed with that of the splicing factor, SC35. Taken together, our data suggest that PIR1 is a novel phosphatase that may participate in nuclear mRNA metabolism.
