To reveal GSDME-executed pyroptosis in cancer cells induced by the Chinese traditional herbal medicine plant Lithospermum erythrorhizon(L. erythrorhizon, Zi Cao) and to investigate the potential mechanism.

Purpose: Our systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of [18F]FDG PET/MRI vs. [18F]FET PET/MRI for recurrent glioma. Methods: We searched for relevant articles in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science until February 2023. Studies regarding the diagnostic performance of [18F]FET PET/MRI or [18F]FDG PET/MRI in recurrent glioma were included. The quality of each study was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Performance Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) tool. Results: A total of nine studies with 310 patients were included in the analysis, the pooled sensitivity, specificity of [18F]FDG PET/MRI in detecting recurrent glioma after definitive treatment were 0.99 (95% CI 0.75–1.00) and 0.62 (95% CI 0.37–0.83), [18F]FET PET/MRI were 0.94 (95% CI 0.81–0.98) and 0.87 (95% CI 0.70–0.95), respectively. The area under curve (AUC) for [18F]FDG PET/MRI and [18F]FET PET/MRI were 0.92 (95% CI 0.89–0.94) and 0.96 (95% CI 0.94–0.97) and there is a statistical difference between the two imaging modalities (Z= 12.433, P< 0.001). Fagan nomogram indicated that when the pre-test probability was set at 50%, the post-test probability for [18F]FDG PET/MRI and [18F]FET PET/MRI could increase to 72 and 88%. Conclusions: [18F]FET PET/MRI has a higher AUC compared to [18F]FDG PET/MRI in the detection of tumor recurrence in glioma. However, the results of the meta-analysis were drawn from studies with small samples. Further larger prospective studies in this setting are warranted.

To investigate the potential anti-tumor mechanisms of naphthoquinone compound shikonin (SKN) extracted from the root of Chinese herbal medicine plant lithospermum (Lithospermum erythrorhizonSieb. & Zucc.).

Ubiquitin/ISG15-conjugating enzyme E2 L6 (UBE2L6/Ube2l6) catalyzes protein ISGylation and ubiquitylation, post-translational modifications which regulate protein stability. Ube2l6 plays a role in promoting in vitroadipogenesis; however, its mechanism(s) of action and in vivoeffects remain unknown. Here, we discovered that UBE2L6 levels were upregulated, and UBE2L6 and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL/Atgl) levels were negatively correlated, in white adipose tissue (WAT) from obese humans and obese mice. Therefore, we employed adipose-specific Ube2l6 knockout (Ube2l6AKO) mice and age-matched Ube2l6flox/floxcontrols to assess adipocyte Ube2l6's role in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and hepatic steatosis. HFD-fed Ube2l6AKOmice displayed lower subcutaneous and visceral WAT mass levels relative to controls. HFD-fed Ube2l6AKOmice also showed WAT adipocyte hypoplasia and hypotrophy as well as enhanced whole-body metabolic activity relative to controls. Furthermore, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, compensatory hyperinsulinemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hepatic steatosis were lower in HFD-fed Ube2l6AKOmice as compared to controls. Mechanistically, we found that Atgl protein expression and Atgl-mediated lipolysis were negatively regulated by Ube2l6's promotion of Atgl protein ubiquitylation. Collectively, adipocyte Ube2l6 functions as a negative regulator of Atgl protein stability and, consequently, promotes HFD-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and hepatic steatosis.

Here, an X-ray-excited super-long afterglow phosphor β-NaYF4:Tb3+has been discovered for the first time. After X-ray irradiation, the green emission can persist for more than 240 h. After 120 h, the power density of afterglow reached 3.76 × 10–6W·m–2, which can be clearly observed by the naked eye under dark vision. Also, combined with the results of thermoluminescence and photoluminescence, the super-long afterglow emission of β-NaYF4:Tb3+can be ascribed to the tunneling model associated with F centers. More importantly, the super-long green afterglow emission of β-NaYF4:Tb3+has been successfully used as an in vivolight source to activate g-C3N4for photodynamic therapy and bacteria destruction. Furthermore, super-long persistent luminescence of β-NaYF4:Tb3+could be repeatedly charged by X-rays for many cycles, which indicates that the phosphors have high photostability under repeated cycles of alternating X-ray irradiation.

The lack of a well-designed brain tumour registry with standardized pathological diagnoses in underdeveloped countries hinders the ability to compare epidemiologic data across the globe. The National Brain Tumour Registry of China (NBTRC), created in January 2018, is the first multi-hospital-based brain tumour registry in China. Patient data reported to the NBTRC in years 2019–2020 were assessed.

In the past 17 years, neurological disease associated with enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) has increased dramatically in the Asia-Pacific region with a high fatality rate in young infants, often due to pulmonary oedema, however the mechanism of this oedema remains obscure. We analysed the brainstem, heart and lungs of 15 fatal cases of confirmed EV-A71 infection in order to understand the pathophysiological mechanism of death and pulmonary oedema. In keeping with other case studies, the main cause of death was neurogenic pulmonary oedema. In the brainstem, 11 cases showed inflammation and all cases showed parenchymal inflammation with seven cases showing moderate or severe clasmatodendrosis. No viral antigen was detected in sections of the brainstem in any of the cases. All fatal cases showed evidence of pulmonary oedema; however, there was absence of direct pulmonary viral damage or myocarditis-induced damage and EV-A71 viral antigen staining was negative. Though there was no increase in staining for Na/K-ATPase, 11 of the 15 cases showed a marked reduction in aquaporin-4 staining in the lung, and this reduction may contribute to the development of fatal pulmonary oedema.

Supercapacitors are considered to be the most promising power source to meet the pressing requirements of energy storage. Supercapacitive electrode materials, which are closely related to the high-efficiency energy storage, have provoked more interest. Herein, we present a high-capacity supercapacitor material based on the nitrogen-doped micro-mesoporous carbon material, which is synthesized by employing urea-formaldehyde resin as carbon and nitrogen sources, zinc chloride as a porogen and SBA-15 as a hard template. With high surface area, abundant porosity and nitrogen-doped, the composite material exhibits a reversible specific capacitance of 226.3 F g[?]1 at the current density of 1.0 A g[?]1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte, and maintains a better high-class capacitance retention capability. These results show that nitrogen-doped micro-mesoporous carbon material represents a promising alternative to efficient electrode material for supercapacitors.
