Reducing multiple contaminations in reflection seismic data remains one of the primary challenges in marine seismic data processing. Besides geological settings, its effectiveness is also dependent on the multiple removal methods. In this study, we undertook two legacy 2D multi-channel seismic data crossing the accretionary wedge off SW Taiwan to test the efficiency of various multiple-attenuation scenarios. The tectonic domain has resulted from the incipient arc-continent collision between the northern rifted margin of the South China Sea and the Luzon volcanic arc. The wedge extends from shallow water to deep water bathymetries, hence promoting both short-period and long-period multiples within the seismic records. A cascade of de-multiple methods was tested to attenuate multiple energy under various seafloor bathymetry and tectonic areas. The first step relies on the periodicity nature of multiples. Spatial dependent predictive deconvolution in the x-tdomain was performed to attenuate reverberations and improve temporal resolution in the time domain. Wave-equation multiple attenuation (WEMA) was applied to suppress the water layer multiples based on a combination of numerical wave extrapolation in the shot domain through water layer and water bottom reflectivity. Surface-related multiple elimination (SRME) aimed to attenuate the residual water bottom multiple and peg-leg multiple by assuming surface-related multiples can be kinematically predicted via convolution of pre-stack seismic traces at possible surface multiple reflection locations. The second step exploits the spatial move-out difference behavior between primaries and multiples. Parabolic Radon transforms far-offset multiples by subtracting noise energy in the τ-pdomain, whereas the frequency-wave number (F-K) filter aimed to eliminate any residual multiples energy in the F-K domain. Predictive deconvolution improved seismic resolution and suppressed sea-bottom reverberation energy in the continental and lower wedge slopes, but not in the upper wedge slope. WEMA, Radon filter, and F-K filter reduced multiples energy both at the continental slope and wedge slope; whereas SRME made minimal impact on both areas. Since the reflection seismic datasets stretch diverse tectonic environments and water depth, there was no single multiple attenuation method capable to suppress multiples in all tectonic environments and bathymetry.

The Formosa Ridge cold seep is among the first documented active seeps on the northern South China Sea passive margin slope. Although this system has been the focus of scientific studies for decades, the geological factors controlling gas release are not well understood due to a lack of constraints of the subsurface structure and seepage history. Here, we use high‐resolution 3D seismic data to image stratigraphic and structural relationships associated with fluid expulsion, which provide spatio‐temporal constraints on the gas hydrate system at depth and methane seepage at modern and paleo seafloors. Gas has accumulated beneath the base of gas hydrate stability to a critical thickness, causing hydraulic fracturing, propagation of a vertical gas conduit, and morphological features (mounds) at paleo‐seafloor horizons. These mounds record multiple distinct gas migration episodes between 300,000 and 127,000 years ago, separated by periods of dormancy. Episodic seepage still seems to occur at the present day, as evidenced by two separate fronts of ascending gas imaged within the conduit. We propose that episodic seepage is associated with enhanced seafloor sedimentation. The increasing overburden leads to an increase in effective horizontal stress that exceeds the gas pressure at the top of the gas reservoir. As a result, the conduit closes off until the gas reservoir is replenished to a new (greater) critical thickness to reopen hydraulic fractures. Our results provide intricate detail of long‐term methane flux through sub‐seabed seep systems, which is important for assessing its impact on seafloor and ocean biogeochemistry. Gas hydrates are ice‐like compounds that form in marine sediments. They can reduce the permeability of the sediments by clogging up the pore spaces, and influence how methane gas flows through sediments and then seeps out of the seafloor. Seepage of methane into the water column plays an important role in seafloor biology and ocean chemistry. In this study, we use 3D seismic imaging to investigate the subseafloor sediments of a ridge in the South China Sea where gas is currently seeping into the ocean. Our data show, in high detail, how gas migrates upward through the sediments due to the buoyancy of gas. Our data also reveal mound structures at certain depths beneath the seafloor. We interpret that these mounds represent distinct phases in the geological past where gas was seeping out of the seafloor. This indicates that gas seepage at this ridge has switched on and off (episodically) throughout geological time. We speculate that the episodic seepage is associated with rapid seafloor sedimentation, which changes pressure conditions beneath the seafloor. Our work improves the understanding of how gas seepage processes can change on geological timescales. Abstract Swath bathymetry data and seismic reflection profiles have been used to investigate details of the deformation pattern in the area offshore southwestern Taiwan where the Luzon subduction complex encroaches on the passive Chinese continental margin. Distinctive fold-and-thrust structures of the convergent zone and horst-and-graben structures of the passive margin are separated by a deformation front that extends NNW-ward from the eastern edge of the Manila Trench to the foot of the continental slope. This deformation front gradually turns into a NNE–SSW trending direction across the continental slope and the Kaoping Shelf, and connects to the frontal thrusts of the mountain belt on land Taiwan. However, the complex Penghu submarine canyon system blurs the exact location of the deformation front and nature of many morphotectonic features offshore SW Taiwan. We suggest that the deformation front offshore SW Taiwan does not appear as a simple structural line, but is characterized by a series of N–S trending folds and thrusts that terminate sequentially in an en-echelon pattern across the passive Chinese continental slope. A number of NE–SW trending lineaments cut across the fold-and-thrust structures of the frontal accretionary wedge and exhibit prominent dextral displacement indicative of the lateral expulsion of SW Taiwan. One of the prominent lineaments, named the Yung-An lineament, forms the southeastern boundary of the upper part of the Penghu submarine canyon, and has conspicuous influence over the drainage pattern of the canyon

A wide-angle seismic survey, combining ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) and multi-channel seismic (MCS) profiling, was implemented in the southwestern Ryukyu subduction zone during August and September 1995. In this paper, we present the data analysis of eight OBSs and the corresponding MCS line along profile EW9509-1 from this experiment. Seismic data modeling includes identification of refracted and reflected arrivals, initial model building from velocity analysis of the MCS data, and simultaneous and layer-stripping inversions of the OBS and MCS arrivals. The velocity-interface structure constructed along profile EW9509-1 shows that the northward subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate has resulted in a northward thickening of the sediments of the Ryukyu Trench and the Yaeyama accretionary wedge north of the trench. The boundary between the subducting oceanic crust and the overriding continental crust (represented by a velocity contour of 6.75 km/s) and a sudden increase of the subducting angle (from 5 degrees to 25 degrees) are well imaged below the Nanao Basin. Furthermore, velocity undulation and interface variation are found within the upper crust of the Ryukyu Arc. Therefore, the strongest compression due to subduction and a break-off of the slab may have occurred and induced the high seismicity in the forearc region.

Slip partitioning along oblique subduction zones has conventionally been examined by slip vector residuals determined from interface earthquakes. It is measured through contrasting the slip vector with respect to the local plate convergence direction defined on the surface of the Earth by the Euler vector. Interpretation of regional plate kinematics based on slip vector residuals thus defined may be misleading. Besides the apparent discrepancy attributable to the surface projection of vectors on an obliquely plunging surface, a more fundamental problem is the construction of the reference subduction flow field for the subducted slab based upon the known plate convergence. It can be shown that for complicated slab geometry, the conventional practice of intuitively rotating the Euler kinematics onto the subducted slab leads to unrealistic intraplate deformation that invalidates the mechanical integrity of the oceanic lithosphere. Alternatively, we propose to calculate the velocity field for the specific slab geometry based on the rationale that the subduction flow field should be the one that endures the least amount of intraplate deformation. The calculated flow field for the westernmost Ryukyu slab, that is in transition to the Philippine Sea plate (PSP)–Eurasian Plate (EP) collision near Taiwan, reveals quite distinct subduction flow field. The particle paths associated with the calculated flow field are in better accordance with the observed slip vectors while the corresponding strain-rate field is consistent with the previously reported lateral compression seismogenic zone. Furthermore, it is speculated that the plate kinematics of the northwestern corner of PSP that is impinging the vicinity of the collision might have also undergone significant readjustment to accommodate the potential intraplate deformation. It is noted that the westernmost subducted Ryukyu slab and the northwestern corner of PSP belong to a mechanically coherent tectonic unit. The 3D geometric constraints set up by the subducted slab and the “unfriendly” kinematic constraints imposed by the collision boundary both play important roles in configuring the intraplate deformation within PSP. Manifestation in the local kinematics might indicate deviation from the general PSP–EP convergence, and is thus of crucial importance to tectonic interpretations of geophysical observations in this area.

Estimates of the sub‐seabed fluid flow rates are important for understanding hydrological budgets, biogeochemical cycles, and physical properties of the sediments. Fluid flow rates and directions, however, are difficult to measure, particularly beneath the seafloor. We developed a rapid method to estimate regional fluid migration rates using an extensive database of seismic reflection profiles taken offshore SW Taiwan. We observe bottom‐simulating reflector (BSR) that deflects toward the seafloor near thrust faults that indicate localized heat flow variations. At these sites, advecting warm pore fluids transport heat to shallower depths and force the BSR shallower. Our 2D steady‐state numerical method quantifies the fluid flow rates required to cause such thermal anomalies. We found that fluid flow rates near the trench of the accretionary wedge range between 0.1 and 16 m3yr−1m−1, with slower and faster rates generally associated with slope basin discontinuities and faults, respectively. To evaluate the fluid pattern evolution from subduction to collision, we studied three transects: one along the Manila subduction zone in the south and two in Taiwan's initial collision zone in the north. We quantified the fluid budget and partitioning of fluid flow between focused discharge through faults and diffusive flow through the wedge. Faults in Taiwan's accretionary wedge capture on average 25% of the total dewatering flux in the younger subduction zone and 38.5% in the tectonically mature collision zone. Our method provides estimates of fluid migration rates along convergent plate boundaries, and contributes to our understanding of focused fluid flow processes in many other regions. Fluids play a key role in many subduction zone processes. However, quantitative constraints on flow expulsion rates and directions are limited. Efficient upward fluid migration through subbottom conduits can be generated tectonically, such as faults. Faults are ubiquitous along convergent margins; yet, a quantitative understanding of their impact on regional fluid budgets, flow rates, and distribution at vent sites remains unclear. We developed a rapid numerical method to constrain 2D focused fluid flow rates using seismically derived thermal structure and applied it to the subduction‐collision zone system off SW Taiwan. To study the influence of long‐term tectonic processes on the fluid budget, we remotely mapped the distribution and amount of focused fluid flow across the convergent margin, using a widespread shallow subbottom temperature field derived from a spatially dense seismic data set covering an area of more than 25,000 km2. We combined the results with other previously published geophysical data sets to calculate the margin fluid budget. We found stronger fluid advection from depth along the collision zone, where thicker sediments are deformed more intensively. Our approach to quantify fluid fluxes is applicable to a range of tectonic regimes and can provide critical insight into local, regional, or even global fluid budget estimates. This study presents three multi-channel deep seismic reflection profiles located in the south Ryukyu margin between 122°30′E and 123°30′E, where a N-S-trending oceanic ridge, the Gagua Ridge, is entering the subduction zone, for the purpose of examining the effects of ridge subduction on structures of the forearc region. Structural features which correspond to different stages of the oblique ridge subduction are observed. East of 123°E, a short-lived sequence of indentation, tunneling, then resumption of frontal accretion occurred in the accretionary wedge (the Yaeyama Ridge) as the subducted portion of the Gagua Ridge swept the overriding Ryukyu margin from below along the northwesterly convergent direction. Under the forearc basin, the subducted portion of the Gagua Ridge is uplifting the arc basement to form the Nanao Basement Rise which separates the sedimentary strata of the Nanao and East Nanao forearc basins. Results from this study suggest that the oblique subduction of the Gagua Ridge has not only affected accretionary wedge structures but also the arc basement of the south Ryukyu margin.

Located between the Okinawa trough (OT) backarc basin and the collisional zone in Taiwan, the southernmost Ryukyu subduction zone is investigated. This area, including the southwestern portions of the OT and Ryukyu island arc (RA) and located west of 123.5° E, is named the “Taiwan-Ryukyu fault zone” (TRFZ). West of 123.5° E, the OT displays NNW-SSE structural trends which are different in direction from the ENE-WSW trending pattern of the rest of the OT. Using joint analysis of bathymetric, magnetic, gravity and earthquake data, three major discontinuities, that we interpret as right-lateral strike-slip faults (Faults A, B and C), have been identified. These faults could represent major decouplings in the southern portion of the Ryukyu subduction zone: each decoupling results in a decrease of the horizontal stress on the portion of the RA located on the eastern side of the corresponding fault, which allows the extension of the eastern side of OT to proceed more freely.

The Chimei Canyon is a large, uplifting wedge‐top submarine canyon offshore eastern Taiwan that has delivered sediment since ~1–2 Ma from the rapidly eroding Taiwan orogen to the Chimei Fan in the Huatung Basin, east of the colliding Luzon Arc. In this study, we document the depositional record of the Taiwan arc‐continent collision on the adjacent oceanic Philippine Sea Plate using multichannel seismic reflection data together with high‐resolution bathymetry data to study the morphology, seismic sequences, and structures of the Chimei Canyon‐Fan system. The sedimentary strata are separated into three seismic sequences. The lowest sequence overlies oceanic crust, showing Cenozoic‐Cretaceous pelagic seismic facies that we interpret as pre‐collisional, whereas the middle and upper sequences are syn‐collisional. We propose a model for the development of the Chimei Canyon‐Fan in which the middle sequence first developed ~1–2 Ma, while the main depocenter was to the west in the forearc basin, west of the Luzon Arc. The upper sequence records a shift of depocenter after ~1 Ma from the forearc basin to the Chimei Fan east of the Luzon Arc. At the same time, this antecedent paleochannel‐fan system was deformed rapidly (~60 mm/yr; 62 km minimum shortening) by a complex imbricate thrust belt with the emergence of the arc and forearc basin as the west‐vergent Coastal Range thrust belt and the Chimei Canyon incising the active east‐vergent Offshore East Taiwan thrust belt. The thrust belt underlying the wedge‐top Chimei Canyon‐Fan has undergone >19‐km shortening and ~2.6‐km structure uplift. Large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, are stored in hydrates beneath the seafloor. Sea level changes can trigger massive methane release into the ocean. It is not clear, however, whether surficial seafloor processes can cause comparable discharge. Previously, fluid migration was difficult to study due to a lack of spatially dense seismic and thermal observations. Here we examine a gas hydrate site at Four‐Way‐Closure Ridge off SW Taiwan using a high‐resolution 3‐D seismic cube, together with bottom‐simulating reflections (BSRs) mapped in the cube, a thermal probe data set, and 3‐D thermal modeling results. We document, on a scale of tens of meters, the interaction between surficial sedimentary processes, fluid flow, and a dynamic gas hydrate system. Fluid migrates upward through dipping permeable strata in the limb, the slope basin, and along thrust faults and ridge‐top normal faults. The seismic data also reveal several double BSRs that underlie seabed sedimentary sliding and depositional features. Abrupt changes in subsurface pressure and temperature due to the rapid seabed sedimentary processes can cause a rapid shift of the base of the gas hydrate stability zone. This shift may be either downward or upward and would result in the accumulation or dissociation of hydrate in sediments sandwiched by the double BSRs, respectively. We propose that dynamic surficial processes on the seafloor together with shallow focused fluid flow affect hydrate distribution and saturation at depth and may even result in methane expulsion into the ocean if such localized features are common along convergent plate boundaries. Gas hydrates are ice‐like compounds in marine sediments. Shallow surface dynamic processes may affect the hydrate saturation beneath the seabed. We combine 3‐D seismic and thermal probe data, with numerical geothermal modeling to investigate the geological processes controlling the distribution and formation of gas hydrates beneath thrust ridge anticlines. We also study fluid flow patterns under the seabed and found that localized fluid flow and rapid surficial erosional processes have significantly altered the temperature and pressure conditions of hydrate bearing sediment strata at depth, ultimately influencing gas hydrate formation and dissociation. We propose to conduct hydrate exploration close to thrust anticlines, where such active processes might enrich the saturation of gas hydrates or even influence fluid emission into the ocean if similar processes are widespread along continental margins.
