Cement sheath is an annular structure situated between casing and formation, which is designed to seal the formation and reinforce the borehole. However, owing to the surface irregularity and drilling mud residue, the interface between the cement sheath and the formation is one of the weakest parts for fluid leakage causing well integrity issues, which would also affect the reliability of the cement bond logs. To evaluate the cementation state and tensile properties of the cement-formation interface, rock-cement composite disc specimens are prepared, considering key factors such as lithology, interface irregularity, treatment of oil-based drilling mud contamination, and flushing fluid washing. Flushing efficiency of the drilling mud contaminated rock surface, interface cementation characteristic, referenced tensile strength, and tensile fracture morphology are acquired and analysed comparatively. Results show that (1) the flushing efficiencies of shale and sandstone are 74.1 ~ 61.9% and 52.4 ~ 28.4%, respectively, decreasing with the increase in surface irregularity. (2) The rock-cement interface gradually becomes poorly cemented as the surface cleanliness decreasing and the irregularity increasing. (3) Under the condition of drilling fluid contamination, there exists a transitional area at the cemented interface, where microcracks and pores are developed. (4) With the influence of drilling mud contamination, the referenced tensile strengths of shale-cement and sandstone-cement interfaces drop from 2.716 to 0.586 MPa and from 2.840 to 0.007 MPa, respectively. The effects of underground temperature and pressure environment are not particularly considered in this study and would be investigated systematically in future research.

Salt cavern oil storage (SCOS) is a mature underground energy storage method which is widely used in the EU and US. The construction of SCOS is a complex system that involves all kinds of engineering. In this paper, four typical problems of SCOS engineering are analyzed: economical evaluation, pipeline laying, stability analysis, and operation method. To solve these four typical problems, five mathematical optimization models (fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model, analytic hierarchy process model, grey prediction model, simulated annealing model, and systematic clustering model) are implemented. The key findings show that the investment weight of SCOS is 0.5834, which is the best investment storage method, an improved stability evaluation criterion of the SCOS is adopted based on evaluation score: 0.72–1.0 is stable; 0.54–0.72 is more stable; 0.23–0.54 is a little unstable; 0.01–0.23 is very unstable, and a new salt cavern sediment void oil storage (SVOS) operation method is proposed. The research has a significance for the implementation of large-scale SCOS in China.

It is well known that the complicated channeling of fluid flow and heat transfer is strongly related with the intricate natural fracture system. However, it is still challenging to set up the fracture network model which is strong heterogeneous. Compared with other methods (e.g. equivalent continuum model (ECM), discrete fracture model (DFM), and ECM-DFM), the fracture flow module in the COMSOL Multiphysics simulator is powerful in definition of fractures as the inner flow boundary existing in the porous media. Thus it is selected to simulate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the geothermal-developed fractured granite of Sanguliu area located at Liaodong Peninsula, Eastern China. The natural faults/fractures based on field investigation combined with the discrete fracture network (DFN) generated by the MATLAB are used to represent the two-dimensional geological model. Numerical results show that early thermal breakthrough occurs at the production well caused by quick flow of cold water along the highly connected fractures. Suitable hydraulic fracturing treatments with proper injection rates, locations, etc. can efficiently hinder the thermal breakthrough time in the natural fracture system. Large well spacing helps the long-term operation of geothermal production, but it is highly dependent on the geometrical morphology of the fracture network. The enhancement of reservoir properties at the near-well regions can also increase the geothermal production efficiency. The results in this study can provide references to achieve a sustainable geothermal exploitation in fractured granitic geothermal reservoirs or hot dry rocks at depth.

Energy is the basic condition for national industry. The European (EU) energy crisis has caused serious problems for the world economy, and it has great implications for China. In this paper, the causes, harm and solutions of the EU energy crisis are discussed; the main energy causes of the EU, the relationship between energy storage and energy crisis, and the relationship between natural gas price and strategic storage are analyzed by mathematical models, the strategic energy storage situations of China and the EU are analyzed; the necessities and advantages of China's strategic energy storage are analyzed; the measures of improving strategic energy storage are proposed. The results show that the essence of the EU crisis is the imbalance between the supply and demand of energy, the war and fragile energy supply aggravate the imbalance. The energy storage capacity has an obvious inhibiting effect on the occurrence of the energy crisis, which accounts for 70 %. Strategic energy storage has a flattening effect on the natural gas price when the gas supply is disrupted. China's strategic energy storage is dominated by natural gas and oil. China and EU have radical measures for energy transformation. Long-term stable and diversified energy supply, salt cavern energy storage system, and reasonable transition of energy can help China deal with the energy crisis. The research has certain reference values for the world's strategic energy storage.

In unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs, presence of numerous movable grains and a complex grain size composition necessitates a clear understanding of the physical clogging process for effective groundwater recharge in groundwater-source heat pump systems. To investigate this, a series of seepage experiments was conducted under in situ stress conditions using unconsolidated sandstone samples with varying grain compositions. The clogging phenomenon arises from the combined effects of grain migration and compaction, wherein the migration of both original and secondary crushed fine-grain particles blocks the seepage channels. Notably, grain composition influences the migration and transport properties of the grains. For samples composed of smaller grains, the apparent permeability demonstrates a transition from stability to decrease. In contrast, samples with larger grains experience a skip at the stability stage and directly enter the decrease stage, with a minor exception of a slight increase observed. Furthermore, a unique failure mode characterized by diameter shrinkage in the upper part of the sample is observed due to the combined effects of grain migration and in situ stress-induced compaction. These testing results contribute to a better understanding of the clogging mechanism caused by the coupled effects of grain migration and compaction during groundwater recharge in unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs used in groundwater-source heat pump systems.

The construction of salt caverns for energy storage is of strategic significance, but the operation of underground gas storages in salt formations will cause surface deformation. The research and analysis of surface deformation is an important part of the stability evaluation of salt caverns for gas storage. From the perspective of classical mechanics theory, the analytical solution of surface deformation above salt caverns for gas storage is deduced. The surface displacement caused by the contraction of a salt cavern is regarded as the boundary displacement caused by the surface force acting on a spherical cavern in a semi-infinite space. The equivalent conversion of load form is carried out based on the mirror principle. The vertical subsidence and horizontal displacement of the surface of the elastic semi-infinite space is obtained. According to the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle, the viscoelastic solution of the surface displacement of the semi-infinite body, regarded as Maxwell body, can be obtained. A numerical model of a salt cavern for gas storage is established based on the engineering practice. The results of the analytical solution and the numerical simulation are compared and analyzed to verify the accuracy of the analytical solution. The analytical solution was applied to predict the surface displacement above a group of caverns, and the influence of the layout of salt caverns and cavern center spacing on the surface displacement is analyzed. The research results show that the regular triangular layout is slightly better than the square layout. The larger the cavern center spacing, the smaller the maximum surface subsidence. The proposed theoretical prediction model can provide a theoretical basis for controlling surface deformation for the construction of gas storage caverns.

Understanding the anisotropic creep behaviors of shale under direct shearing is a challenging issue. In this context, we conducted shear-creep and steady-creep tests on shale with five bedding orientations (i.e. 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°), under multiple levels of direct shearing for the first time. The results show that the anisotropic creep of shale exhibits a significant stress-dependent behavior. Under a low shear stress, the creep compliance of shale increases linearly with the logarithm of time at all bedding orientations, and the increase depends on the bedding orientation and creep time. Under high shear stress conditions, the creep compliance of shale is minimal when the bedding orientation is 0°, and the steady-creep rate of shale increases significantly with increasing bedding orientations of 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°. The stress-strain values corresponding to the inception of the accelerated creep stage show an increasing and then decreasing trend with the bedding orientation. A semilogarithmic model that could reflect the stress dependence of the steady-creep rate while considering the hardening and damage process is proposed. The model minimizes the deviation of the calculated steady-state creep rate from the observed value and reveals the behavior of the bedding orientation's influence on the steady-creep rate. The applicability of the five classical empirical creep models is quantitatively evaluated. It shows that the logarithmic model can well explain the experimental creep strain and creep rate, and it can accurately predict long-term shear creep deformation. Based on an improved logarithmic model, the variations in creep parameters with shear stress and bedding orientations are discussed. With abovementioned findings, a mathematical method for constructing an anisotropic shear creep model of shale is proposed, which can characterize the nonlinear dependence of the anisotropic shear creep behavior of shale on the bedding orientation.

As one of the most important ways to reduce the greenhouse gas emission, carbon dioxide (CO2) enhanced gas recovery (CO2-EGR) is attractive since the gas recovery can be enhanced simultaneously with CO2sequestration. Based on the existing equation of state (EOS) module of TOUGH2MP, extEOS7C is developed to calculate the phase partition of H2O–CO2–CH4–NaCl mixtures accurately with consideration of dissolved NaCl and brine properties at high pressure and temperature conditions. Verifications show that it can be applied up to the pressure of 100 MPa and temperature of 150 °C. The module was implemented in the linked simulator TOUGH2MP-FLAC3D for the coupled hydro–mechanical simulations. A simplified three-dimensional (3D) 1/4 model (2.2 km × 1 km × 1 km) which consists of the whole reservoir, caprock and baserock was generated based on the geological conditions of a gas field in the North German Basin. The simulation results show that, under an injection rate of 200,000 t/yr and production rate of 200,000 sm3/d, CO2breakthrough occurred in the case with the initial reservoir pressure of 5 MPa but did not occur in the case of 42 MPa. Under low pressure conditions, the pressure driven horizontal transport is the dominant process; while under high pressure conditions, the density driven vertical flow is dominant. Under the considered conditions, the CO2-EGR caused only small pressure changes. The largest pore pressure increase (2 MPa) and uplift (7 mm) occurred at the caprock bottom induced by only CO2injection. The caprock had still the primary stress state and its integrity was not affected. The formation water salinity and temperature variations of ±20 °C had small influences on the CO2-EGR process. In order to slow down the breakthrough, it is suggested that CO2-EGR should be carried out before the reservoir pressure drops below the critical pressure of CO2.

The utilization of geothermal energy can reduce CO2emissions into the atmosphere. The reinjection of cooled return water from a geothermal field by a closed loop system is an important strategy for maintaining the reservoir pressure and prolonging the depletion of the geothermal reservoir by avoiding problems, e.g., water level drawdown, ground subsidence, and thermal pollution. However, the drawdown of water injectivity affected by physical and chemical clogging may occur in sandstone aquifers, and the reservoir temperature may be strongly affected by the reinjection of large amounts of cooled geothermal water, thus resulting in early thermal breakthrough at production wells and a decrease in production efficiency. In addition to the injection of cooled geothermal water, the injection of CO2can be used to maintain the reservoir pressure and increase the injectivity of the reservoir by enhancing water–rock interactions. However, the thermal breakthrough and cooling effect of the geothermal reservoir may become complex when both CO2and cooled geothermal water are injected into aquifers. In this paper, a simplified small-scale multilayered geological model is established based on a low-medium geothermal reservoir in Binhai district, Tianjin. The ECO2N module of the TOUGH2MP simulator is used to numerically simulate temperature and pressure responses in the geothermal reservoir while considering different treatment strategies (e.g., injection rates, temperatures, well locations, etc.). The simulation results show that a high injection pressure of CO2greatly shortens the CO2and thermal breakthrough at the production well. A much lower CO2injection pressure is helpful for prolonging hot water production by maintaining the reservoir pressure and eliminating the cooling effect surrounding the production wells. Both pilot-scale and commercial-scale cooled water reinjection rates are considered. When the water production rate is low (2 kg/s), the temperature decrease at the production well is negligible at a distance of 500 m between two wells. However, when both the production and reinjection rates of cooled return water are increased to 100 m3/h, the temperature decrease in the production well exceeds 10 °C after 50 years of operation.
