2. Rendez‐vous manqués: Feminisms and anti‐racisms in France

- Abstract
AbstractIn this article three contexts are explored in which the discourse of fraternity obscures the specific position of women for anti‐racists: in the 1960s around the development of anti‐racist education; the 1970s and 1980s ‘new wave’ of women's and anti‐racist movements, and most recently in terms of attitudes towards Muslim women, particularly the ‘headscarf affair’ and the reception of women fleeing fundamentalist violence in Algeria. Before looking at these cases, consideration is given to how the idea of ‘fraternity’ might reinforce the marginalisation of women in France and how this fits into feminist and anti‐racist theoretical concerns about the narrowness of the way in which supposedly universalist ideas like equality and liberty have been defined.

7. Concepts, models and anti-racist strategies in Britain and France
- Author
-
Lloyd, Cathie
- Abstract
European integration brings with it the aspiration that anti-racist strategies will be co-ordinated throughout the twelve member states. However, definitions of the problems to be addressed vary widely. This article compares the position in France and Britain, pointing out that for many French people the pursuit of equality is much more important than the recognition of minorities. This difference is rooted in historical experience. The article argues, however, that despite variations in concepts, models and definitions there is much to be learnt from developing a dialogue on ways to combat racism.
