Concentrating on a series of mutinies that were planned during the summer of 1798 to take a number of British warships of the Channel Fleet into the enemy port of Brest, this article is a micro study of one of those ships, the 74-gun Defiance in the three-week period, 7–28 July 1798, during which the plot was hatched. The intention is to throw light on a number of key questions that relate to the organization and character of these planned mutinies, with consideration given to the motivating factors, the extent to which an organizational structure existed and identification of the key activists. Effectively a cross-sectional micro analysis of one ship's crew at a single point in time, it will allow for a better understanding of the vast range of factors that coalesced in the development of a plot to seize not just this warship, but at least seven other ships of the Channel Fleet while cruising off the port of Brest. A study of the events at both Ambala and Meerut indicates that the sepoys' plan was to rise in revolt while the Europeans were attending the Sunday church services. They wanted to catch them, unaware and unguarded. The uprising of the sepoys at Ambala in the morning and at Meerut in the evening is explained by this fact. The rest of the details of the uprising were to be worked out locally by the leaders in the two cantonments. The existence of a premeditated plan of rising at Meerut—the 20th N.I. and 11th N.I. would rise and the 3rd Light Cavalry would follow them after releasing their fellows from the jail, was confessed by a native officer of the 3rd L.C. to Lt. Gough. The final part of the plan involved going to Delhi after completely destroying the Europeans at the two stations. The British were, however, too alert to be caught napping at Ambala, and the sepoys failed to translate their plans into action. But they succeeded at Meerut. Studies on indiscipline and unrest aboard ship during the Age of Sail so far have mostly focused on the norm-violating behaviours of common seamen. This article, by contrast, investigates acts of insubordination committed by warrant and commissioned officers in the Royal Navy, using courts martial records as sources. It traces the contours of that historical phenomenon, identifying common confrontations as well as less frequent ones that may prove to be particularly revealing about disobedience among naval officers and what this can tell us about governance afloat and its challenges. The United Provinces of the Río de la Plata used privateers during their war for independence against the Spanish crown. At first, this activity was limited to the River Plate, but in 1815 privateering became maritime, taking the offensive to the Spanish trade routes in the Atlantic and the Pacific. This way of waging war lasted until 1821 when it was finally suspended. This article studies some mutinies on the privateer ships of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, between 1815 and 1821, trying to explore and analyse their causes, using both primary and secondary sources. This is a micro-study of the most radical ship in the Spithead mutiny of 1797, the Pompée, which experienced another mutiny soon after the Spithead confrontation was settled. The court martial papers of this singular event reveal a politically divided crew, which leads one to reconsider the dynamics of mutiny in this tumultuous year. I argue against the conventional interpretation of inside-outside influences, of pre-political seamen infiltrated by radical forces and also against reductive binaries such as mutiny versus subversion. While stressing the seamen's own capacity for collective action and their exposure to the political currents of the 1790s, I suggest the Pompée 's experience illustrates the volatility of maritime protest in a rapidly changing environment in which Britain dug deep into its population, maritime and non-maritime, national and international, to man its fleets. By exploring forms of maritime resistance spanning the age of sail and steam, this article interrogates certain preponderant assumptions within the historiography of subaltern agency. Within this historiography, "modernity" has generally come to be signalled by trade union organisation and a concomitant regard for legality, while violent resistance is implicitly or explicitly taken to signify the Other of modernity: traditional, primitive, incomplete. Arguing that this tradition/modernity divide has mapped onto the sail/steam divide in the historiography of maritime resistance, this article complicates the association of violent mutiny with the age of sail and litigiousness with the age of steam. It does this by bringing both epochs into single focus, thereby finding important continuities in forms of everyday resistance on board ship across the sail-steam divide. Using existing scholarship to look at resistance in the age of sail and archival material like ships' logbooks, newspapers and "Lascari"-English dictionaries for the age of the steam, it argues that rather than trade unions fundamentally reshaping the forms of everyday resistance into legal channels, it was in fact these longer traditions of quotidian contestation that fed into the formation of unions at the end of World War I, and continued through the 1920s and 1930s. How did Fletcher Christian, leader of the mutiny on the Bounty, find Pitcairn Island when the supposed location was 342 km west of its actual location? This study in applied historical geography explores whether seabirds were the potential navigational beacons pointing to the whereabouts of Pitcairn. Flight distances are drawn from seabird foraging range studies that employed Global Positioning System (GPS) with tracking devices. These data are used to construct foraging range buffers around Pitcairn and the other three islands of the Pitcairn Islands (Oneo, Henderson, and Ducie). The results indicate that seabirds effectively extend island sighting distance and perhaps guided Christian to Pitcairn Island. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article uses evidence from the English High Court of Admiralty to examine the problem of mutiny and indiscipline among seafarers in the transatlantic trades during the 1680s and 1690s. It focuses on a venture of 1688, which is of particular interest not only for the light it sheds on maritime conditions, but also because it involved Daniel Defoe, a young and ambitious trader who was trying to establish a commercial opening in Chesapeake Bay. The article contextualizes this previously unknown venture, relating it to the development of the tobacco trade and its dependence on an expanding market and widening patterns of consumption. The failure of the voyage, in association with other business problems, had serious consequences for Defoe, leading to bankruptcy in 1692 and his withdrawal from direct involvement in overseas trade. Against a broader background of other voyages, the legal testimony heard by the court draws attention to the wider problem of mutinous conduct at sea. These cases were provoked by a range of grievances including pay, labour conditions and discipline. Repeatedly they raise questions about the conduct of masters at sea, including their rights and responsibilities. At the same time, the article argues that the upsurge in mutiny and indiscipline at sea, while revealing the inexorable tension between pay and productivity, also exposed deeper issues regarding seafaring custom and contract. Recent scholarship has re-focused attention on British economic strategy in the Great War, and the role of armed merchant cruisers in blockading Germany’s maritime trade, mainly through the ‘Northern Patrol’. Armed merchant cruisers were crewed by regular Royal Navy sailors and by volunteers from the Royal Navy Reserve or Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, but also by ordinary merchant seamen who were not necessarily volunteers and who were transferred over with their ships as Royal Navy auxiliaries through T124 agreements. Their particular status as neither regular Royal Navy ratings nor civilian merchant seamen gave rise to problems which occasionally spilled over into industrial action, interpreted as mutiny. This article identifies the main causes of these problems and analyses the relationship between Royal Navy officers and these merchant seamen, who served together in these hybrid warships. The TV station located within the premises of the Ministry of Information in Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, went out off air on the 21st of January 2013 for the entire day. There were reports that 200 mutinied soldiers seized the station with the help of two tankers compelling the station director to announce the release of political detainees and journalists, who were held since independence, and demanded the implementation of ratified constitution. It was indeed a demand in pending for the past two decades, ever since Eritrea turned into a free nation. The mutiny came to an end with the soldiers surrendering their arms. In February 2009, the government of Eritrea raided a tiny radio station located in the downtown Asmara, adjacent to the Ministry of Education, detaining the entire staff and crew of Radio Bana that broadcasts programmes for adults and neo-literates. They were arrested without any charges and were never produced in the court. Six journalists of Radio Bana were released by January 2015 after prolonged imprisonment. These two incidents provide only a glimpse of the ongoing, never-ending, government-sponsored terror on the journalists of Eritrea. In a country where free political debate, freedom of expression, freedom of movement, right to academics, and freedom of religion are denied and suppressed, it is absolutely not possible to study journalist’s safety. Based on fieldwork and personal interviews with journalists, students and citizens serving indefinite national service, the study aims to illustrate the government-sponsored terror on the people of Eritrea in general and journalists in particular. This paper seeks to explain the underlying causes of a mutiny that the Canadian artist A.Y. Jackson took part in while stationed in the English village of Shoreham-by-Sea and serving with the 23rd Reserve Battalion. The battalion was filled with convalescents who, having been wounded at the front, were on their way back to France after a stay in ‘blighty.’ The men of the battalion lived in a world of harsh discipline, rigorous physical training and poor-quality rations. Moreover, those who commanded them tended to be ‘shirkers’ –– at least in the eyes of the men of the battalion –– who had avoided going to France, choosing instead to remain in England. A sense of the unfairness of it all pervades the reminiscences of Jackson and other members of the battalion. Officially, the ‘mutiny’ never took place, and the whole incident was swept under the rug after a few high ranking Generals and dignitaries were called in to tour the mess facilities. In this paper, the focus will be on Mahasweta Devi's piece of art Draupadi and its comparison with its compatriot "Draupadi" of the epic Mahabharat. Mahasweta Devi pinpoints a perceived necessity of sounding a strong protest by creating a defensive resistance against echelon hegemony of upper caste and caste-bound discrimination. She brings to light the pain, suffering and silence forcefully hurled on marginalized, victimized lower class or Dalits. She discusses the experiences that thrive on presumed mainstream-marginal or core-periphery relationships. The main attraction lies in the composure and tolerance of Draupadi who wades through the ordeal of barbaric acts perpetrated on her and sheds no tears, nor sighs, and her hysteric laughter unnerves the tyrants. She, single handedly, unarmed, as a solider of her caste, challenges the entire authority and defeats them by her confidence and shames them into making amends for the shame they hurled on her by stripping her off. The brig Arabella was seized by South-East Asian sailors off the western coast of Sumatra in September 1813. A wage dispute motivated one section of the crew to kill the captain, scuttle the vessel and then row for the shore. Subsequent attempts by British officials to apprehend them were frustrated by local politics. The Arabella was a ‘country ship’, or privately owned merchant vessel that traded between Asian ports. Such vessels occupy an important place in the history of Indian Ocean maritime labour yet the experiences of their lascar crews have received very little scholarly attention. This article provides the first in-depth study of a lascar mutiny aboard a British sailing ship. It traces the mutineers from their quarrel with the captain to their deaths in the custody of the East India Company. The incident followed an almost identical pattern to many other uprisings involving lascars that occurred during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It also presents some highly distinctive features, making it a useful subject for a case study. The mutinous lascars formed relationships with the enslaved members of the ship's company, including a ‘slave sailor’ and the captain's concubine. They also engineered a second shipboard uprising while being transported to Calcutta for trial. The official investigation provides a rare portrait of the social relations aboard a British country ship trading to South-East Asia in the early nineteenth century. It reveals the deep divisions that could exist between members of a mixed Indian Ocean crew, highlighting the problems inherent in dealing with the applied category of ‘lascar’. The investigation also generated over a hundred pages of depositions in which lascars demonstrated their understanding of local politics, described their working lives aboard a sailing vessel, complained about abusive treatment and repeated jokes their shipmates had told about the dead captain. A critical reading of these documents thus offers one of the very few means of recovering lascar voices from the archives. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article presents a narrative analysis of the wreck of theWager, a small sixth rate converted Indiaman of 28 guns that functioned as a supply ship on the Anson expedition (1740–4). In 1741, despite the efforts of the crew to bring her about, she wedged between two rocky islets off the inhospitable Patagonian coast of Chile. Despite the carnivalesque insubordination of a section of the crew, about 140 men made shore and those who remained on board, to pillage the grog and coin, followed a few days later. They found themselves hiding from the harsh weather and foraging along a generally barren coastline. Increasing factionalism ensued as the commander, Captain Cheap, began to lose control of the men. The explanations for the growing dissent vary depending on whose narrative we read. This analysis contrasts various accounts, some of which vilify the ‘mutineers’ while others explain the ascendance of the gunner, John Bulkeley, and the carpenter, John Cummins, as an inevitable consequence of the multiple failures of the selfish, capricious and incompetent Cheap. These discrepancies are interpreted by reading the narratives alongside studies of the Georgian navy, the genre of shipwreck narrative and the dynamics of discontent and insubordination in the eighteenth century. The second part of the article turns to a contemporary representation of the wreck of the Wager– Patrick O'Brian's The unknown shore(1959) – and argues that the novelist's inability or refusal to engage the complexities of the politics of the castaways articulates with the generally conservative agenda of contemporary popular maritime fiction. Textbook accounts of the 1872 revolt in Cavite generally see it as a mutiny of Filipino soldiers and arsenal workers over local grievances, often portraying it as instigated by the friars with the intention of eliminating the priests and lawyers agitating for reforms. This article, basing itself principally on the extensive account sent by Governor Izquierdo to the Overseas Minister, accepts his characterization of the revolt as a frustrated separatist revolution, while rejecting his conclusions as to the instigators of the revolt. A biography of Russian naval officer and revolutionary Peter Petrovich Schmidt is presented, with emphasis given to his role in a large 1905 naval insurrection in Sevastopol, Ukraine. Despite his involvement in the mutiny, the author also explains Schmidt's hope for a peaceful transition to democracy in Russia. He held a childhood love of Russian literature and studied political economy. His experiences during the Russo-Japanese War are also explained.

This article examines the forms of injustices the junior officers experienced in the Armed Forces the Philippines the led them to launch a mutiny in July 2003. Findings from fourteen face-to-face interviews with the mutineers suggest that the Oakwood Mutiny is not just prompted by discontent about poor material provision in the AFP as depicted in popular discourse but is the culmination of the junior officers' attempts at challenging the 'norms of recognition' in the military. This article foregrounds the cultural patterns of disesteem in the armed forces that deter officers from realising their identities as honourable protectors of the state as well as the efforts made in overcoming such form of injustice.
