ABSTRACTThe study investigated how social environmental factors (i.e., supportive behaviors of coaches and parents) are associated with thriving in sport amongst a youth population, influencing important outcomes of sport participation (i.e., intention to continue sport and subjective well-being in sport). Two-wave data was collected within a three-month time span to help determine the relationship of social environmental factors with intention to continue and subjective well-being. One hundred fifty-nine Japanese youth sport participants (Mage = 15.81) completed the questionnaires twice. Autonomy supportiveness of coaches and parents was positively related to thriving three months later. In contrast, only the relationship between autonomy support from coaches and thriving was mediated by the change in basic psychological need satisfaction. Moreover, autonomy support from coaches was related to intention to continue sport and subjective well-being in sport through the changes in basic psychological needs satisfaction and thriving individually and in sequence. The results indicate the importance of both the parent and coach in the role of nurturing the young athletes, while the influence was more robust for coaches. The findings indicate a need for stakeholders to focus on educating and promoting their role in creating supportive environments aimed at increasing retention and well-being.

When a multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) is soldered on a printed circuit board (PCB), the capacitor deformation generates a force on the PCB, which serves as a source to excite PCB vibration and generate unwanted acoustic noise. A MLCC can be used under any loading conditions as long as the power supply voltage remains below its rated voltage; thus, the MLCC source mode can be extremely complicated because of different combinations including direct current voltage levels, alternating current noise amplitudes, and related frequencies. When the power rail is under different loading conditions, the PCB vibration amplitude can differ; however, the MLCC vibration source model should remain the same under a given condition. In this article, the MLCC equivalent source models are developed with a simplified method, and a source model library for the six MLCCs is constructed. A method for simplifying the MLCC equivalent source model is addressed from three aspects: frequency, power supply dc voltage, and ac noise amplitude. The developed source model library is validated by comparing the simulated and measured system vibration velocity. The proposed simplification method can significantly reduce model development efforts and enable the creation of a comprehensive source model library for MLCCs.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are commonly used on printed circuit board (PCB) power distribution networks (PDN) for decoupling purposes. However, an MLCC can act as a source to excite PCB vibrations due to noise ripples on the power rail. In this letter, four types of equivalent source configurations are studied and compared to represent the excitation of an MLCC on a PCB driven by power rail noise. The corresponding source values are extracted at test-vehicle PCB resonance frequencies. The investigation of the four equivalent source types involves a comparison between simulated and measured PCB vibration velocity responses triggered by MLCC deformation across an audible frequency band. The advantages of each equivalent source are discussed for specific application scenarios.

On-board electrical components can cause printed circuit board (PCB) vibration, thus generating audio noise if the electrical noise is in the audible frequency range. The electrical component-induced vibration can be equated to an external force applied to the PCB. This article presents a novel methodology to extract the equivalent force of electrical components on a PCB to study board vibration and potential acoustic noise problems. The method is based on a combination of measurement and simulation, wherein PCB vibration is used as the medium in the extraction process. The methodology is validated by the correlation of PCB vibration pattern, frequency, and amplitude with a known electromagnetic force applied to the PCB.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) connected to a power distribution network (PDN) can create acoustic noise through a combination of the power rail noise at the MLCCs and the piezoelectric effect of the capacitor's ceramic material. The deformation of the MLCCs brought on by power supply noise creates vibrations which cause the printed circuit board (PCB) to vibrate and generate the audible acoustic noise. In the following paper, a simulation methodology is presented to analyze the acoustic noise created by MLCCs on a PCB. A simulation model for the PCB vibration modal response is built and the modal superposition method is used to analyze the harmonic response of the PCB excited by the capacitor. By multiplying the measured power noise spectrum on the MLCC with the simulated deformation of the PCB found from the harmonic response analysis, the total response is obtained. Simulated results show a good correlation with the measured acoustic noise. The proposed method shows promise for analyzing and predicting the acoustic noise from singing capacitors.

ABSTRACTThriving, “a psychological state composed of the joint experience of vitality and learning (Spreitzer, Sutcliffe, Dutton, Sonenshein, & Grant [2005]. A socially embedded model of thriving at work. Organization Science, 16(5), 537–549.)” might offer further insight into the problem of youth sport development research. The purpose of the study was to investigate the mechanisms underlying thriving within a youth sport context. More specifically, the present study considered the perspective of Self-Determination Theory and in particular, how hedonic and eudaimonic motives, as antecedents of thriving, influenced youth athletes’ outcomes (i.e., intention to continue sport, subjective well-being in sport, and goal progress), consequences of thriving. 196 youth sport participants answered an online survey. Path analysis was conducted to test our hypotheses. We used the bias-corrected bootstrap procedure to examine the hypothesised indirect effects. Our results showed that both hedonic and eudaimonic motives were positively related to all outcome variables (intention to continue sport, subjective well-being in sport, and goal progress) through both the basic psychological need satisfaction and thriving. Thriving is an important psychological concept that can facilitate youth athletes to acquire important outcomes for youth sport participation.

AbstractThis paper examines young athletes’ experiences, perceptions, and learning derived from participating in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG). We draw from Lillehammer 2016 YOG Games-time field notes, observations, and interviews with 36 young athletes to demonstrate young athletes learning about important aspects of the Olympic Movement through first-hand experience. Young athletes focused on their competition and performance, while benefitting from their interactions with other athletes and with the context, as they engaged in formal and informal learning activities. Findings demonstrate progressive degrees of young athlete learning particularly from a development of sport, but also a development through sport perspective. Our study contributes to the examination of Games-time activities, logistics, and processes experienced by the athlete who benefits from a sport (athletic) and social (lifelong) development perspective.

Abstract:This study explored stakeholders’ perspectives in building a professional sport franchise brand that is reentering the same marketplace for a third time following the folding of two previous franchises within the same sport league. To accomplish the study’s purpose, a qualitative method was employed where semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 stakeholders of the reentering franchise. The findings uncovered five antecedents: game-extensions, owners’ credibility, community outreach, cross-promotions, and aligning with established brand. Theoretical contributions, practical recommendations, and directions for future research are provided.

The current study was conducted to examine the interactive effects of basic psychological needs satisfaction (BPNS), hedonic and eudaimonic motives on intrinsic regulation. To assess the causal relationship, two-wave time-lagged data collection was employed. A total of 159 youth athletes in Japan participated in online surveys twice (three-month time lag between two data points). The results indicated that the effect of BPNS on intrinsic regulation was moderated by hedonic and eudaimonic motives. Interestingly, BPNS negatively affected intrinsic regulation among youth athletes with low hedonic motives. This negative impact was further augmented when the level of eudaimonic motives was higher. Conversely, BPNS positively influenced intrinsic regulation among youth athletes with high hedonic motives. This positive impact of BPNS was more prominent when eudaimonic motives were lower. Overall, the findings suggest that when intrinsic regulation is the central concern, youth athletes should focus more on seeking enjoyment while putting self-development aside to maximize the positive impact of BPNS.

Purpose: In a major multi-sport event, the athlete is both a benefactor and producer of organizational activities. Athletes’ centrality makes understanding their satisfaction with the event an important management activity. The purpose of this paper is to examine the lived athletes experience (during the event), so as to provide insight into the important Games facets contributing to their satisfaction and to explore the controllable aspects of the event from an organizer’s perspective that athletes felt made the Games special and memorable. Design/methodology/approach: A multi-dimensional instrument (i.e. Athlete Experience Questionnaire) was designed and tested at previous iterations of a major multi-sport event and was employed during Games-time. In total, 813 athletes completed the questionnaire during the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Findings: The findings demonstrated an overall high level of satisfaction with the event. Several important facets contributed to athlete satisfaction including social-, service- and communication-related aspects. Further, athletes reported on the importance of cultural opportunities within their Games experience. Research limitations/implications: The paper denotes the importance of the social and cultural interactions and opportunities which lie outside the athletes’ actual competition experience and increase their specialness of the event. Theoretical and practical implications are drawn from the findings relative to the service-dominant logic and service-quality literature within a major multi-sport event Games for the athlete stakeholder. Originality/value: This paper explores how athletes experience the major international multi-sport event environment. Moreover, this paper offers a significant contribution from a hard-to-reach population (i.e. elite-level international athletes), adopts their perspective of the Games environment and determines what contributes to their satisfaction. As the authors highlight, the paper denotes the importance of the planned social and cultural interactions and opportunities, which lie outside the athlete’s actual competition event experience, to increase athlete satisfaction; in contrast, basic sport competition needs seem to be a “basic” expectation.

This research explores what happens when a new sport franchise is granted in a city that has experienced previous franchise failure within the same professional sport league and, in particular, the impact on building the new brand. Through qualitative research with the main stakeholders of the new franchise, this research determines that, while history is an important component to embrace, a new, revised approach that balances both history and a more contemporary sport platform are thought to be significant ingredients towards establishing consumer interest and loyalty within the local marketplace. The findings point to the importance of maintaining semblance to that of colour and star athletes, while demonstrating the impact that a new stadium can have on fan interest.
