In this article, the authors provide information on marine connectivity with focus on pelagic larval duration (PLD) and genetic metrics of dispersal. They believe that PLD influences the scale of connectivity for species with a larval phase. Then previously published and new datasets were reevaluated and revealed a consistent fit between genetic and PLD proxies of dispersal. According to the authors, PLD and genetic metrics reflect the scales of dispersal at least when sampling design is robust.

The article examines 14 nuclear microsatellite loci (nDNA) in the yellow tang fish or Zebrasoma flavescens to assess interactions between the remote reefs of the Hawaiian Archipelago and the species-rich communities of the Central and West Pacific Ocean. Population differentiation among three West Pacific sites and Hawaii were shown by concordant frequency shifts in both nDNA and mitochondrial cytochrome b (mDNA). The implications of fine scale differentiation within the Hawaiian Archipelago for management of the yellow tang are explored. Estimates of yellow tang historical demography indicate that Hawaii exports rather than imports yellow tang larvae.

The article presents a study which examines the null hypothesis that the geographic coral ranges from the North West Atlantic seamounts are limited or endemic to individual seamount peaks. It mentions that 50 Antipatharia and 188 Octocorallia colonies from 14 seamount peaks were examined. It states that the study approximated the genetic variation of the colonies with the use of the mitochondrial loci. It mentions that well-sampled haplotypes were not isolated geographically on seamounts. Results show that the restricted geographic distribution of the deep-sea octocorals and antipatharians is credited to undersampling and that there is no evidence of seamount-scale endemism in the study region. It stresses the development of more variable markers for future studies of the rare haplotypes.
