Quantum Sensing is a rapidly expanding research field that finds one of its applications in fundamental physics, as the search for Dark Matter. Devices based on superconducting qubits have already been successfully applied in detecting few-GHz single photons via Quantum Non-Demolition measurement (QND). This technique allows us to perform repeatable measurements, bringing remarkable sensitivity improvements and dark count rate suppression in experiments based on high-precision microwave photon detection, such as for Axions and Dark Photons search. In this context, the INFN Qub-IT project goal is to realize an itinerant single-photon counter based on superconducting qubits that will exploit QND for enhancing Axion search experiments. In this study, we present Qub-IT's status towards the realization of its first superconducting qubit device, illustrating design and simulation procedures and the characterization of fabricated Coplanar Waveguide Resonators (CPWs) for readout. We match target qubit parameters and assess a few-percent level agreement between lumped and distributed element simulation models. We reach a maximum internal quality factor of 9.2 × 105 for −92 dBm on-chip readout power.

Background: Tumor recurrence is the most expected clinical event after the resection of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, depending on histological findings of the initial lesion. In patients with low and intermediate risk of disease, the intravesical instillation of chemotherapy agents is recommended as a standard treatment to reduce recurrences. Methods: A comprehensive review covering various aspects of different treatments with intravesical drugs is presented. Results: Drugs may be instilled into the bladder starting with a single, ‘early’ postoperative administration or, after tumor resection with adjuvant intent or, before tumor resection under a neo-adjuvant regimen. Both latter protocols would consist of weekly treatments followed by monthly maintenance treatments. Different methods of administering drugs intravesically have been proposed to enhance the depth of drug penetration and its absorption into the bladder wall thus increasing the rate of drug-DNA reaction. These device-assisted therapies therefore have set a goal to potentiate the drug’s effect and efficaciousness. The Radiofrequency-Induced Thermochemotherapeutic Effect (RITE) and the Electromotive-Drug Administration (EMDA) are the two most relevant modalities used to increase the activity of intravesical chemotherapy. Despite the widely adopted international guidelines’ recommendations, and recent clinical trials of device-assisted chemotherapy instillations showing markedly enhanced recurrence-free survival compared even to the standard of care, clinicians and pharmacologists are not familiar with the in-depth physical aspects, pharmacokinetics and systemic absorption of chemotherapeutic drugs following their intravesical administration. Conclusion: Knowledge of drug diffusion mechanisms into the tissue and cellular cytoplasm following bladder instillation is a key to understand the safety profile and clinical activity of chemotherapy.

Neuropsychological rehabilitation efficacy in multiple sclerosis (MS) is a currently investigated issue. We reported, in a single blind controlled study, that an intensive short duration cognitive training of attention and executive functions significantly improves the treated functions and reduces depression in MS. The persistence of these effects over time are unknown.

The implementation of single-photon detectors in waveguide photonic circuits will open the possibility of experiments in quantum regime that would otherwise be impossible to be implemented using bulk optics. Nanowire superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs) are good candidates for integration due to their relative ease of fabrication on top of GaAs heterostructures. In this paper we show the experimental demonstration of single-photon detectors, based on superconducting nanowires, fully integrated with GaAs/AlGaAs ridge waveguides. We will discuss all the major challenges surmounted and all the steps necessary to achieve these results.

The progress in nanofabrication has made possible the realization of optic nanodevices able to handle single photons and to exploit the quantum nature of single-photon states. In particular, quantum cryptography (or more precisely quantum key distribution, QKD) allows unconditionally secure exchange of cryptographic keys by the transmission of optical pulses each containing no more than one photon. Additionally, the coherent control of excitonic and photonic qubits is a major step forward in the field of solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics, with potential applications in quantum computing. Here, we describe devices for realization of single photon generation and detection based on high resolution technologies and their physical properties. Particular attention will be devoted to the description of single-quantum dot sources based on photonic crystal microcavites optically and electrically driven: the electrically driven devices is an important result towards the realization of single photon source “on demand”. A new class of single photon detectors, based on superconducting nanowires, the superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs) are also introduced: the fabrication techniques and the design proposed to obtain large area coverage and photon number-resolving capability are described.

Although in benign multiple sclerosis (BMS) locomotor disability is absent or only minimal, subclinical cognitive impairment seems to occur in many cases. Diffusion tensor (DT) MRI enables us to quantify the extent of “actual” tissue damage, which goes undetected when using conventional MRI. Against this background, we investigated the extent of structural brain damage underlying cognitive dysfunction in BMS, with the ultimate aim to move a first step toward a more reliable definition of this disease phenotype.

Purpose:To compare the corneal toxicity of xylazine (XYL)/ketamine (KET) with that of clonidine (CLO)/KET in the rat, in the presence or not of the α2-adrenergic antagonist yohimbine (YOH). Methods: XYL (10 mg/kg) and CLO (0.15 mg/kg) were administered subcutaneously in the rat in combination with KET (50 mg/kg), in the presence or not of YOH (2 mg/kg). Results:The corneas immediately lost transparency and luster, but recovered within 120 min. By both light and electron microscopy, a marked stromal edema and alterations of all layers were observed. In addition, XYL/KET altered the permeability of the cornea as indicated by the augmented levels of 14C-indomethacin, topically administered 30 min after the anesthetic combination. Conclusions: The mechanism of the corneal toxicity of XYL and CLO in the rat is unclear but we speculate that: (a) proptosis and inhibition of normal blinking did not play a major role because topical application of hyaluronic acid did not protect against it; corneal decompensation, edema and opacification could be due to (b) osmotic or (c) mechanical endothelial stress: the first resulting from the sudden increase of the glucose concentration in the aqueous humor due to the well-known inhibition of insulin release by α2-adrenergic agonists, and the second from the acute elevation of intraocular pressure caused by these α2-adrenergic mydriatics in the rat; (d) addition, XYL and CLO could act by directly interacting with local α2- or, possibly, α1-adrenergic receptors, whose function is still not clear but probably essential for corneal homeostasis.

Hydralazine (HDZ), a p.o. effective antihypertensive drug, was evaluated for its genotoxic effects in both rodent and human cultured cells and in the intact rat. Dose-dependent amounts of DNA fragmentation, as measured by the alkaline elution technique, and of DNA repair synthesis, as revealed by autoradiography, were produced in primary cultures of metabolically competent rat hepatocytes by subtoxic HDZ concentrations ranging from 0.32 to 1.0 mM. A similar potency in inducing DNA repair synthesis was displayed by HDZ in primary cultures of hepatocytes from four human donors. A modest reduction of both DNA fragmentation (-13%) and DNA repair (approximately -50%) was observed in hepatocytes obtained from rats pretreated with indomethacin in order to reduce prostaglandin synthetase activity. In contrast, neither in rat nor in human hepatocytes, differences in N-acetyltransferase activity resulted in meaningful changes of the same end points. V79 cells, which are essentially deficient of monooxygenases catalyzing the biotransformation of xenobiotics, were as sensitive as hepatocytes to the DNA-damaging activity of HDZ. Moreover, after exposure to 0.1 to 0.3 mM HDZ, a modest (2.1- to 2.8-fold), but significant, increase in the frequency of mutation to 6-thioguanine resistance was observed in V79 cells in the absence of a metabolic activation system. In rats, a single p.o. dose of 80 mg/kg produced a clastogenic effect in the liver, but not in the bone marrow, and the p.o. administration for 14 successive days of approximately 46 mg/kg/day increased the average diameter of liver basophilic foci initiated by diethylnitrosamine.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The experimental search for neutron-antineutron oscillations has been completed at the ILL high flux reactor at Grenoble. A neutron beam of intensity 1011n s-1 was propagated for a timet?0.1 s in vacuum in a region shielded against the external magnetic field. No antineutron was detected in 2.4·107 s running time. The lower limit \over{\smash{\scriptstyle=}\vphantom{_x}}$}} 0.86 \cdot 10^8 $$ " /> s for transitions was established at 90% C.L.

6 patients with severe chronic progressive multiple sclerosis were subjected to total lymphoid irradiation (TLI) to assess clinical efficacy and side effects. During a 4 year follow-up the disability progression was continuous. Side effects during TLI were well tolerated; side effects after TLI brought about a worsening of the quality of life. One patient died of pneumonia. In this preliminary study TLI did not reduce the worsening of disability in MS patients.

The response of a rectangular basin along a straight, perfectly reflecting coastline, subject to monochromatic waves coming either normally or obliquely from the sea, was investigated theoretically and experimentally.

Nineteen moderately impaired patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis and an initially relapsing-remitting course were included in a neuropsychological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up study. The average test/re-test interval was about 2 years. The neuropsychological findings were indicative of a very mild overall impairment; the patients, as a group, showed no evidence of cognitive deterioration in the follow-up period. A numerical estimation of the severity of cerebral demyelination shown by MRI did not indicate a significant change. No correlation between cognitive performance variations and MRI changes was found.

Among the neuropsychological disorders frequently associated with hemiplegia from stroke, neglect is considered to be responsible for the poor motor and functional recovery of left hemiplegics. Within the syndrome of Unilateral Spatial Neglect, we studied the role played by extrapersonal neglect, personal neglect, and anosognosia on recovery from left hemiplegia. Our follow-up study, conducted on left hemiplegic patients with or without neuropsychological disturbances, shows that the presence of anosognosia is the worst prognostic factor for the motor and functional recovery from left hemiplegia due to stroke and that patients with extrapersonal neglect only have the same prognosis as patients without neuropsychological disorders.

The interaction of levamisole and/or adenosine in vitro an E-rosette forming cells (RFC) of healthy subjects and on low RFC of patients affected with various diseases was investigated. Levamisole did not enhance normal RFC. The drug enhanced low RFC in some patients (responders) but not in others (non-responders). Adenosine inhibited normal and low RFC and this inhibition could be reversed by levamisole.Further, levamisole 150 mg 2 days a week was given to 12 Hodgkin's disease (HD) responders for 2 weeks, then 150 mg 1 day weekly for 2 1/2 months After one week of treatment RFC increased and the enhancement could be maintained during the whole treatment period.Lastly levamisole in vitro and in vivo diminished serum adenosine deaminase activity in normal subjects and HD patients.

Metoclopramide (MCA) and procainamide (PCA), two widely used benzamide drugs developed before the present regulatory climate but recently found to induce DNA breaks in human lymphocytes, were evaluated for their genotoxic effects in cultured rodent and human cells. In subtoxic concentrations neither MCA (from 0.10 to 0.32 mM) nor PCA (from 0.18 to 0.56 mM) induced DNA fragmentation and repair in primary cultures of metabolically competent rat and human hepatocytes. In the absence of metabolic activation a meaningful increase in the frequency of 6-thioguanine-resistant V79 cells was produced by the maximum tolerated concentration of MCA (3.2 mM), whereas PCA resulted nonmutagenic. Any clastogenic effect was absent in human lymphocytes exposed to MCA for 28 hr, but a statistically significant increase in the frequency of micronucleated cells was observed when the exposure was prolonged to 72 hr. In contrast, PCA was never clastogenic under the same experimental conditions. These results suggest that of the two benzamides tested only MCA should be considered potentially capable of producing mutagenic and clastogenic effects; it presumably behaves as an agent which is rapidly transformed by the liver into inactive metabolites, and the clinical relevance of its genotoxic activity remains to be ascertained.Copyright 1995, 1999 Academic Press, Inc.

Summary—The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of exogenous glutathione (GSH) and N‐acetylcysteine (NAC) on the formation of monoethylglycinexylidide (MEGX) from lidocaine in rats with and without the administration of cimetidine. GSH and NAC were administered intraperitoneally (ip) (1 mmol/kg) 1 hour before treatment with cimetidine (0.5 mmol/kg) or saline, and 1 hr later all rats were injected ip with lidocaine (1 mg/kg). Blood samples were drawn 30 min after the lidocaine injection. MEGX and lidocaine serum concentrations were determined by means of fluorescence polarization immuno‐assay using the TDX system. Cimetidine produced a decrease in MEGX levels (from 210 ± 18 to 164 ± 13 ng/mL) and a parallel increase in lidocaine levels (from 73 ± 22 to 172 ± 47 ng/mL), consistent with cytochrome P‐450 3A inhibition. Both GSH and NAC produced a significant decrease in MEGX levels (151 ± 16 and 139 ± 14 ng/mL, respectively), but no significant increase in lidocaine levels were found. As compared to the cimetidine group, pre‐treatment using either GSH or NAC with Cimetidine produced a marked decrease in lidocaine levels (37 ± 27 and 63 ± 28 ng/mL, respectively) and no modification of MEGX levels (155 ± 12 and 165 ± 22 ng/mL, respectively). These results suggest that GSH and NAC might accelerate the lidocaine metabolism while counteracting the inhibitory effect of Cimetidine.

The trigger and data acquisition system for the N-N experiment at the Institute Laue-Langevin at Grenoble is described along with CAMAC modules especially designed for this experiment. The trigger system is organized around three logical levels; it works in the presence of a high level of beam-induced noise, without beam pulse synchronization, looking for a very rare signal. The final trigger rate is 4 Hz, not very different from the beam off rate, while the trigger efficiency for the antineutron annihilation detection is >0.7. The data acquisition is based on a MicroVAX II computer, in a cluster with four VaxStations, interfaces to CAMAC, and uses a modified version of the DAQP software developed at CERN. The system, has been working for a year with high efficiency and reliability.<>

The response of rectangular large-mouthed harbours to exciting monochromatic plane waves, particularly to waves with rays not orthogonal to the straight coastline, has been numerically investigated. Some of the transversal modes are found to be strongly excited, though in narrow frequency bands. The first transversal mode is quite relevant, especially in harbours with transversal size greater than the length. It can be reasonably suspected that the mechanism of excitation may be rather different from that prescribed by the theory in the case of narrow mouth. Particularly, it has been found that the eigenmodes of the basin with zero elevation on the entrance line play a primary role in determining the harbour response, especially in the excitation of the pure transversal modes.

Surface waves propagating through a channel connecting two basins are both reflected and diffracted. A numerical method is presented to solve the problem for short waves in a rectangular channel of constant depth, based upon the solution of contour integral equations. The numerical effort required is dependent on the total length of the ends of the channel, but not on the channel length, as is the case, on the contrary, for other methods (finite differences and finite elements) that become prohibitive in the short-wave limit. The case of a rectangular channel with length and width in ratio 2∶1 and the internal end partially closed by a jetty is examined in some detail.

Cyproterone acetate (CPA), a synthetic progestin recently found to induce genotoxic effects in hepatocytes from female rats and from humans of both genders, and two structural analogues, chlormadinone acetate (CMA) and megestrol acetate (MGA), have been compared for their capacity to induce DNA repair synthesis as measured by quantitative autoradiography. Exposure of primary human hepatocytes for 20 h to concentrations of CPA, CMA and MGA ranging from 2 to 50 microM induced positive responses in cultures from donors of both genders and the amounts of DNA repair elicited by the three progestins were similar. Under the same experimental conditions substantial differences were observed in the amounts of DNA repair elicited by the three progestins in primary hepatocytes from female rats, their potency decreasing in the following order CPA > CMA > MGA, and the three compounds failed to induce DNA repair in hepatocytes from male rats. These results, which agree with previous findings, suggest that for these sex steroids extrapolation to humans of results obtained in rats might be questionable.

We report the case of a 74‐year‐old patient, whose spontaneous speech was characterized by the compulsive repetition of parts of words, words and sentences with increasing rate and decreasing loudness. On a standardized language examination, his performance was within normal limits, besides the presence of palilalia; neurological examination showed a slight limitation of vertical gaze and a reduction of blinking. A small right capsulo‐thalamic ischemic lesion was present on magnetic resonance imaging. This case provides further evidence that palilalia can be observed as an isolated impairment of speech production following subcortical lesions.

Ultrathin NbN nanowires is the material of choice for superconducting single photon detectors (SSPD) due to the good efficiency, dark count rate and timing jitter at 1550 nm wavelength obtained. These performance parameters are achieved using nanowires a few nanometers thick and 100 nm wide patterned into a meander shape in order to achieve area coverage. The meander shape effectively makes the SSPD of a single very long nanowire in turn giving it a significant inductance which limits the maximum count rate of the detector. Recently, we demonstrated how one can exploit a cascade switch to the normal state of nanowires connected in parallelto significantly reduce the SSPD inductance and increase the signal amplitude. Here we present how one can configure SSPDs that uses multiple cascade switches to the normal state. We show how this principle can be used to expand the SSPD coverage area with a very limited increase in detector inductance with area. Finally we discuss our first results obtained with SSPD based on the multiple cascade switch principle, showing correct operation, increased operational bias range and increased signal pulse amplitudes.
